All that and more as we talk to Becca Eckes and Stephanie Taglianetti, the treble clef of Smoke Ring. With a well earned meteoric rise in the barbershop community, we talk about what's behind the curtain. Quite literally!
Rain will pour down for days in parts of the southeastern United States into next week and that could go well beyond being beneficial for drought--flooding problems may ramp up; a mysterious, dark smoke ring was seen over Kansas on Monday, but scientists say smoke rings like this are usually man-made. A giant black smoke ring floating in the sky over your city never feels great. If you've seen movies like Independence Day or Nope, the sight could be downright terrifying. But a recent example of the phenomenon may come with a fairly run-of-the-mill explanation.WAVY TV 10 news in Virginia this week reported on a smoke ring hovering above the Hampton Roads area. The report features several user submitted photos of the floating object. It was a beautiful day when the smoke ring appeared so it really stands out against the clear blue sky.Download and listen to the audio version below and click here to subscribe to the Today in Manufacturing podcast.

When it comes to all the great bbq guests I've had on my show over the last 46 episodes they all had one thing in common. They were once a beginner. This week we hit pause on big bbq celebrity's and focus on where they started…. At the beginning. Having different social media groups of varied levels of skill I tend to have the conversation with beginners more often than you think. Which is fine with me because that means we are building new bbq lovers. My Ted Talk if you will is The Most. To get the most enjoyment out of bbq it doesn't take the most of anything. The core principles are simple the most of anything isn't good for getting the most out of your bbq journey. The most smoke; nope. The Most cook time; naw. The most seasonings; uh no. The most steps; what is “No”?!? In the second part of this episode I do a touch and go on your beginner smokers. The normal ones that I find to be most common, readily available, ease of use, fairly priced etc. Propane smokers, electric smokers, pellet smokers, charcoal smokers. We don't dive into the bigger commercial style cookers, the gravity fed large offsets, reverse flow etc. there's time to learn later. If you are a beginner and found value I'd appreciate a share, like or follow depending on which platform allows what. If you're a pro and think you know a new up and coming pitmaster needs to hear it from someone else send it! This also is a completely unsponsored list of cookers. But we are willing to take this BBQ Ted Talk to stadiums and large scale bbq events worldwide! Lol.

Night Editor ran from 1934 until 1948. Sponsored by Edwards Coffee, this featured Hal Burdick (1893–1978) as the "night editor". Burdick would receive readers' requests for stories, in a "letter to the editor" format, which he would relate to the listeners. Burdick played all characters in the program. The stories varied greatly including tales of war, adventure, crime, and an occasional ghost story. The radio series was adapted for Night Editor, a short-lived TV series on the DuMont Television Network in 1954, also hosted by Burdick. Cursed Child act IV! This act was a bit faster-paced than the rest, so we ended up covering it all in one long go. The boys are back in time and there seems to be no other special time turners... what could possibly get our heroes out of this jam?! The answer might surprise you. We've got Blanket Plans, Smoke Rings, Demiguise Lore (!), Voldemort Styles, and much, much, MUCH more in this extra long finale episode covering the 8th Harry Potter story! Will we end up liking the play as a whole, or has the final act of this gargantuan stage production turned us into haters? Next week we'll be doing a post mortem on the play itself, as well as some fun third segment stuff!

In this episode I am joined by the usual group of Jaime, Hector and Hiram. We open it up by talking about the last episodes debate of beans or no beans in a bowl of chili. We had some very interesting responses on social media and way more engagement than we anticipated. Hector and I talked about a pop up event that we catered with our friends at Snowbite. We get to take over a commercial kitchen and sell some brisket bowls with rice and our championship beans. Hector makes a live changing decision about wanting to open a restaurant. We were impressed as always with the Pitmaker Safe and how it knocked out 4 amazing briskets with very little wood. Hector talks about potentially getting cancelled. We bring back and oldie but goodie as Hiram and I bring back the What Are You Drinking podcast which is a spin off of our original podcast when the pandemic started. Hiram gives a review of seltzer drinks and plans to have a White Claw party in the near future. Hiram thinks that these drinks will help us maintain our bbq bodies. Hector shares the word on the street as he takes us back to an old story from 19 years ago that recently surfaced. Apparently this was the plane ride from Hell which was led by Rick Flair. Hear about the scandal he started back then that is haunting him today. He is pretty much cancelled. I ask the guys to share some avocado inspired dishes to try at our next cookoff. We talk some Chillin n Grillin and our plans to have then on the next podcast. A bunch of joes that cook like pros!!!Ready Set BBQ Shophttps://www.readysetbbq.com/shop Law Office of Hector Hernandezhttp://hhernandezlaw.com/?fbclid=IwAR3kaG_wQzrsUJ-cVxJLUyjvipMPM1R59xo9YMKFFsiGHaaUgdZ8hd8cB7Y
Season 2 we are back!!! In this episode I am joined by Hector, Jaime and Hiram from Los Angeles. The Ready Set BBQ podcast is back for Season 2 after a month hiatus. We catch up on what we've been doing during the break. Hector plans to go back on his diet after touring some of America's best eats. We talk about a Sunday cookoff earlier in the day. I hope this doesn't become a habit of holding cookoffs on Sundays. We talk about the rise in Covid cases and how it's going to affect everyone. Hiram and I talk about my visit to California. Started off on the wrong foot with flight cancellations but worked out great once I arrived in California. Hiram and and I share some of the good eats we had at Disneyland as well as some other eats in Los Angeles. Hiram breaks his diet to indulge in vacation foods. We think there should be an age minimum for babies as the park was crawling with newborns. We drive up the Pacific Coast Highway to visit Ventura Beach. Hector talks about some of the good eats he had over the break. He finds the best Indian Food restaurant in the world in San Antonio and he raves about Burnt Bean Barbecue in Seguin, TX. Johnny visits Pinkerton Barbecue in San Antonio and creates a video of his visit. We talk about the Olympics and how they are hard to watch. Jaime recommends we skip the Olympics and watch ESPN the Ocho. Fan favorite games as rock skipping, air guitar, corn hole and more. I ask the question of what if BBQ was an Olympic Sport. What would that look like, what kind of foods would they cook. I give a quick review of the Pitts and Spitts vs. the Pitmaker Safe. Each have their pros and cons. We end the show by pitching a contest for our fans. This quickly goes off the rails into a brainstorm for a dating show for Jaime. We’ve been hitting the BBQ trail hard in 2021, but no road trip was bigger than the one we had planned for May. With proper planning and a little help from friends we were able to cram in 20 BBQ meals over the course of five days. Traveling from Houston to Austin to Lubbock to Marfa to Fort Worth to Waco and back home, we were able to try some of the absolute best barbecue in Texas at the following places: Valentina’s BBQ, La Barbecue, Franklin Barbecue, LeRoy and Lewis BBQ, Interstellar BBQ, Evie Mae’s Pit Barbeque (twice), Pitforks and Smoke Rings, Rejino BBQ, Tom and Bingo’s BBQ, Hill Barbecue, Brick Vault Brewery and BBQ, Convenience West BBQ, Goldee’s BBQ, Dayne’s Texas Craft BBQ, Zavala’s Barbecue, Smokeaholics BBQ, Guess Family Barbecue, Helberg Barbecue and Cooper’s BBQ. We recap the trip in this episode, answer some listener questions, and at the end of the episode make a special announcement about some big plans we have for the summer. Steven and Ian kick off this week’s episode of Indiecast with a half-assed recap of last week’s Grammys. It doesn’t last long before the duo dive straight into a discussion of the aesthetic and influence of Kurt Vile in honor of the tenth anniversary of Smoke Ring. The main topic this week is Chemtrails Over The Country Club, the seventh studio album from Lana Del Rey. It’s the follow-up to Norman F*cking Rockwell, which was one of our favorite albums of 2019, and Lana seems to feel the pressure across her latest. Like her other work, Chemtrails is a cinematic affair ripe with what can only be described as “vibes.”In this week’s Recommendation Corner, Steven is bumping Ian's previous recommendation of the new self-titled album by Really From. Ian, on the other hand, has been digging into South Korean outfit Parannoul, whose releases are only available on Bandcamp.

Kurt Vile—that’s his real name—helped found the rock band the War on Drugs. But he left that band shortly after its début to make records of his own. His albums include “Childish Prodigy,” “Smoke Ring for My Halo,” and the recently released “Speed, Sound, Lonely KV (ep.)” Vile’s music has been characterized as “slacker rock,” but he takes songwriting seriously. He’s popular enough to have been honored with Kurt Vile Day in his home town of Philadelphia, but he tells the music critic Amanda Petrusich that he still can’t get a reaction from his hero, Neil Young. He joined Petrusich in the fall of 2018, at the New Yorker Festival, for a conversation and to perform a live version of “Pretty Pimpin.” This segment originally aired April 12, 2019.

Sponsored by Edwards Coffee, this featured Hal Burdick (1893–1978) as the "night editor". Burdick would receive readers' requests for stories, in a "letter to the editor" format, which would tell on the program. Burdick played all characters in the program. The stories varied greatly including tales of war, adventure, crime, and an occasional ghost story. The radio series was adapted for Night Editor, a short-lived TV series on the DuMont Television Network in 1954, also hosted by Burdick. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Sherlock Holmes Radio Station Live 24/7 Click Here to Listen https://live365.com/station/Sherlock-Holmes-Classic-Radio--a91441 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Transcript —– Smoke Rings – a 100 word story A man, or a mere impression of one. He rises from the chimney of some factory or another, taking shape from the smoke. He hovers above the city, carried by the wind, the result of a secret project. Eyes are cameras, ears are receivers, recording silently. No door can hold him. Built from the latest in nanotechnology, he just blows underneath like smoke. His brain has the computing power of a supercomputer. The results are being sent for processing at a secret facility. He is just the prototype. More are being created. Watch out from the fog, it’s coming alive. —– Hi there and thanks for stopping by. I’m Guy, and you’re listening to my surreal sketchbook of reality. —– Episode 25, Eyes are Cameras We know what a chicken is, or – do we? This episode Is a semi-philosophical look at the idea of chicken. I’m not a professional philosopher by any means and my approach can be quite absurd, illogical and not at all that serious, so – you’ve been warned. Do not take this podcast too seriously. If you tend to take things too seriously, this might not be the podcast for you. Seriously. I mean it. Find another podcast to listen to. You’re still here? Good. Let’s talk about chicken. What makes a chicken what it is? Is it the shape of the chicken? Is it what it sounds like? The way it walks? The way it talks? You might begin by saying a chicken is a flightless bird, that is a bird that can’t fly. There are other flightless birds so that wouldn’t be what defines a chicken but merely one of the chicken’s characteristics or traits. Could you say a chicken is a collection of traits that make up a chicken? Do we need all of those traits to coexist in order for a chicken to be a chicken or is there one unique trait that makes a chicken a chicken. What is that one elusive trait that is uniquely chicken? When we dig deeper into a chicken, we find a strand of DNA just sitting there, waiting to be found. DNA is the blueprint of any living organism or creature, a recipe for the makeup of that creature and the most unique trait of that creature. The chicken has her own unique DNA like every other living being and the sequence of that DNA can be sequenced and then mapped. No other creature has that same unique DNA map, so you can say that the unique DNA sequence that resides inside a chicken is what defines the making of a chicken. All this talk about the making of a chicken made me hungry. I think I’ll make a chicken for lunch today. I’ll be right back. —– The Science of Beauty – a 100 word story They say beauty is in the eye of the beholder, so some scientists started dissecting eyes, searching for the exact place where beauty resides. First, they dissected the eyes of mice, got them nowhere. They dissected the eyes of convicted criminals, dead ones at first, but then someone reasoned that having some real-time input from subjects could result in important data. It didn’t work either. Someone pointed out criminals didn’t really have a sense of beauty, so they tried using the eyes of artists, poets, and musicians. When they finished, they looked around them to find a world without beauty. —– Welcome back. So, we say that the chicken DNA is what defines our chicken. What if we cook the chicken? That chicken soup still has those DNA strands in it. Does this mean the soup is a chicken? If it doesn’t, when does the chicken stop being a chicken? Is it when the last strand of DNA dissolves? Is it when we eat the chicken and it becomes part of us? Maybe DNA is not all that makes up a chicken. Maybe it’s a collection of DNA and other traits. It would seem that being alive is one such trait, but then it also seems that a dead chicken is still a chicken. Let’s say someone builds a mechanical chicken. Is it still a chicken? We might say a mechanical chicken is not really a chicken, the same way that a drawing of a pipe isn’t really a pipe. What then if we take an actual chicken and start replacing all the parts that make up a chicken with mechanical parts until it becomes a mechanical chicken. When does the chicken stop being an actual chicken? What is that unique characteristic that stops a chicken from being a chicken? You might say if a chicken thinks it’s a chicken, then it’s a chicken. What then if a mouse thinks it’s a chicken? Is that mouse also a chicken? You might then say that a chicken is whatever you think is a chicken. This would make the definition of chicken the same as the idea of chicken you have in your mind. In that way, the chicken itself doesn’t really exist. It’s just the idea of chicken that exists in your mind. This concludes episode 25 of this podcast. Close the door on your way out and don’t forget – I’m just a figment of your imagination. —–

Dolette McDonald — maybe you know of her vocal work with the Talking Heads, or Sting. She was a member of both groups — both touring and recording. But Dolette's catalog goes much deeper — how about backing vocals for Nile Rodgers' Chic, The Rolling Stones, Steve Winwood, Nona Hendryx, Juan Gabriel for example! Dolette is a friend of FSQ ; she leads vocal duties on a few of our original FSQ releases via Soul Clap and Midnight Riot Records. Over the course of two hours we showcase some of the rarest jams featuring Dolette as a prominent vocalist, including her hook laden performances for new wave dons Blancmange, Cabaret Voltaire, and ABC. Dolette blows "Smoke Rings" with Laurie Anderson and "Adds a Little Love" with Gerri Granger. Over the past thirteen years, Rob Tarbell has developed and drawn from two unique processes – “Smokes”, smoke based work and the “Struggles”, porcelain sculptural ceramics. In 2006, a failed portrait attempt using cigarettes and liquor collided with a lingering what – if : What if I burned my credits cards and used the smoke to make marks? The first attempt at burning credit cards yielded a deep black with seductive wispy grays no brush could deliver. Tarbell’s penchant for embracing unorthodox methods and materials was then fully focused on the potential of capturing and creating with smoke. He continues to pioneer and push his smoke technique through rigorous trial and error and with the adaptation of tools and the creation of equipment to suit each new discovery and advance of the smoke process. To create the smoke, credit cards, gift cards, and, now, 35mm slides of his artwork are burned - removing their growing presence in daily life - an ironic nod to a self-help technique of burning sentimental things to remove their emotional burden or historical connection. The smoke process involves directly permitting or preventing its accumulation, or by indirectly encouraging or discouraging the flow of smoke on the surface. The Struggles are sculptural ceramic figures created by infusing fabrics and faux fur with porcelain slip, forming, then firing. Each figure embodies the acts of loss, transformation, and preservation in subject, concept, and material. Animals appear whole, or in part, and impersonate through guises or by employing disguises. Rabbits embody a vast array of symbols and possess the ability to pass between the real and imaginary while still remaining true to their chosen character. In 2017, the Tampa Museum of Art featured his smoke and porcelain work in Skyway Selections: Curator’s Choice. His work has been shown in more than twenty solo exhibitions and seventy-five group exhibitions throughout the United States, Korea, China, and England. Rob’s work is currently represented by Claire Oliver Gallery in New York.Tarbell’s work has been featured in more than 50 articles in publications worldwide, including New American Paintings, the Huffington Post UK, Daily Mail UK, and the Kultura Zabaikalya in Transbaikalia, Siberia. BioBorn in Findlay, Ohio, Rob Tarbell earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Painting and Graphic Design from Auburn University. He attended graduate school at the University of Tennessee where he earned a Master of Fine Arts degree and Master of Science degree in Art Education. For nearly two decades, he has balanced his studio practice with teaching at institutions such as Virginia Commonwealth University and James Madison University. Moving to Sarasota, Florida, in 2013, he continued to hone his techniques in his home studio, while he worked at the John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art and taught at the New College of Florida and the Ringling College of Art and Design. Tarbell and his family work and reside in Richmond, Virginia.

Tale as old as time, song as old as rhyme: the rich have always sucked off the poor, and podcasting icon Greg Sahadachny has always joined Gobbledyween for the most ridiculous and outrageous pick of the season. This time, Paul and Arlo have chosen to torment Greg with Brian Yuzna’s 1989 satire Society, which is a dumb teen sex comedy until--well, until it isn’t. The gang discusses the film’s subtext and/or screaming neon text; Screaming Mad George’s “surrealistic makeup effects”; how the movie surprisingly rewards repeat viewings; and the film’s unlikely parallels to Lynch, Friedkin, Polanski, and a whole buncha other pretentious arthouse weirdos. Sometimes, despite being entrenched in various attempts further and promote the medium to the layman, I really regret the relative youth and instant accessibility of podcasting. There just isn't the history or massive, undiscovered, forgotten areas to explore the way there is with something as all-encompassing as music. Case in point, last night I had drinks with two of the big innovators in podcasting, and . They are terribly nice, accessible guys who post a Twitter that they're coming into town, and instantly 30 people show up at a bar to chat and toss back a few (everyone else looked at us like we were a traveling leper colony). While we were there, we discussed all of the various things we've done over the years and where you can go to download them. Suddenly, it dawned on me: This digital age isn't all it's cracked up to be sometimes. I mean, I'm never going to have the joy of trawling through garage sale boxes looking for old mono pressings of (to say nothing of the infamous "Barber Cover" depicting CC Chapman covered in hair taking scissors to a Barbie Doll's golden locks). I'll not be making a pilgrimage to Binghampton, New York, interviewing convenience store clerks and school teachers, looking for that minute piece of previously-uncovered trivia that will allow me to completely change my approach to podcasting and hopefully write the definitive Encyclopedia of some day. There will never be a six-disc official anthology release of all of those old alternate takes of episodes that I've had on a scratchy Belgian bootleg vinyl since '79. My grandchildren will never stand in line to pay $299 for the "Ultimate Boxed Set" of 256-bit remasters of because Dave Slusher's cough at 14:58 of Episode #72 "has a much richer tonal quality" than it does on the old 128-bit versions I grew up with. Our sphere is pretty much 100% out there. Our heroes are a bit less-legendary; our history, a bit shorter; our genre-altering revelations, a bit fewer and further between -- and it's probably going to stay that way. This is probably why I think my guest on this episode is totally cool. When talking to musicians around Indianapolis, one hears a lot of stories -- you might even say legends -- about Jethro Easyfields. He's been a staple of the local scene for decades, and when he's not actively playing around town, he can invariably be found in New Orleans, Phoenix, or elsewhere, looking to expand his own musical vocabulary and bring that experience back and add it to the collected pool of talent here in his home state. That vocabulary, by the way, now easily slips back and forth between rockabilly, blues, folk, rock, country, Americana and several other genres. His latest CD, Elixir, is a combination of new tunes and old favorites performed in his living room by an assortment of his "collected" friends (called "The Arrowheads"). This isn't a basement tape from a bunch of DIY kids, though (and, no, I have nothing against that scene; I've even featured it on this show more than once). These are quality session and live players you know from top acts around town and elsewhere, getting back to the basics, but still keeping it professional. 's production work is masterfully done, but at the same time intentionally unalloyed and organic, with most songs being done in just a couple of takes. As such, Elixir showcases Easyfield's natural abilities, energy, and diversity in both performance and songwriting -- a fitting representation of an artists who once made his living playing street corners for change. Links referenced in the show: Jethro Easyfields can be found here: | | | . Much of his music, including the Po Boy album and his Retrospective are available on the excellent MP3 Archive. He worked and played at the (before it became a cookie-cutter national restaurant chain) His latest CD, Elixir, is available at shows or the usual suspects (, in Indy; in Ft. Wayne). This is the third of three shows recorded July 31 during round 1 of (co-sponsored by Indy In-Tune). Two more bands that we, unfortunately, didn't have time to record that night will be on in future episodes ( and ). We look forward to being back at 8 Seconds for the finals in just a few short weeks featuring Dead Man's Grill, Outer Sanctum, Compass Rose, Smoke Ring, Jai Baker, Shadow Box, One-Eyed Dog, and others.Smoke Ring is a band of contradictions. One one hand, they sing about having no luck at all, yet on the other hand their album, "Fell in the Right Place," is a guitar-driven, butt-kicking, rock and roll testament to how the lineup and songs seem to just gel effortlessly into a cohesive unit that effortlessly churns out great number after great number to an audience that adores them (they were voted into the Rock Battle finals in the middle of this recording). If anything, it's I who should be decrying my lack of fortune during this interview, which was recorded in three separate sessions (before they played, after they played, and after the winners presentation) and interrupted multiple times by those other, "old media" sponsors who wanted a piece of the winners. Though I think I said it in the interview, I do need to extend thanks to Smoke Ring for doing their best to make sure that they finished out the interview with Indy In-Tune, even though there were most-definitely more-important people and broadcasting organizations -- with bigger audiences -- that wanted their attention all of the sudden. We look forward to seeing (and hopefully having a drink with) them on the 25th when we return for the final round. Links referenced in the show: Smoke Ring can be found here: . Their album, Fell in the Right Place, is available for purchase or on their MySpace page. The band is sponsored by . The CD was produced by at . Outer Sanctum has advanced to that round, so come out and help them take home the gold. Our next will be Monday, September 28th, at BW3 on the south side. Oh, those wacky guys. This week's show is a bit chaotic as you can tell, powered by a bit too much beer and a band that, when I said, "Just be relaxed and conversational," actually took me to heart. So, for the multiple conversations and the people talking over each other, I apologize. The was the largest assembled group I've ever tried to record at once, and already a pretty wild bunch of guys. Thus I didn't even notice the audio jumble until I went in to do the editing. On the other hand, Strange Face are a great bunch of guys who are a lot of fun to hang around, and who play some kick-ass heavy rock. We caught their set at Birdy's, where they gave veteran acts like Flesh Suit and Smoke Ring. True to their word they were completely out of control on stage and certainly gave the more-seasoned veterans a run for their money that night. Not to mention, if the six song demo they recorded in a single session is anything to go on, I can't wait to hear what they do when they've got time and money on their side. This show also marks the beginning of what is planned to be a "occasional two-host format," with my good friend Mark Miller acting as the first guinea pig. This is mostly to keep energy levels up, add a little variety to interviews (which even I'll admit are becoming somewhat patterned), and ensure that Indy In-Tune isn't becoming "the Darrin show." The plan is to get a few movers and shakers, former guests, the occasional random listener, and important non-performing members of the Indianapolis music scene to step up to a mic once in a while. To that end, if you're interested in donning a headset and interviewing your favorite band, , we'll set something up. Important links from the show: Strange Face can be found here: ( / ) I promised the band I'd tell everyone not to visit the web site though. Co-Host Mark Miller can be found here: ( / ) As mentioned, Mark and Tim Spainhower () recorded as an acoustic duo, called Into the Mystic, which later became a short-lived full band called Blue Tear (featuring a certain podcast host on keyboards). The first studio project was abandoned shortly after completion, but you can hear the complete, unmastered album on . Though I found several, this was my favorite of the on the web. Two more bands mentioned worth checking out: Snoddy's older brother, Ryan, plays for the band . His younger brother, Blake, plays for . And as usual these days, we implore listeners to check out and learn how they can help protect on-line radio stations from a ten-fold increase in licensing fees imposed by the copyright association.
