The Gregory Brothers have been YouTube pioneers for over a decade making parody songs with the use of auto-tune to alter political debates, newscasts, movies and more. Better known as Schmoyoho, the brothers have written songs for the Academy Awards and TV shows such as Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt. More recently they have gone viral week after week on TikTok with their remixed songs using clips from popular Netflix series Stranger Things and other YouTube creators interviews. Does the Corn Song sound familiar? Or Chrissy, Wake Up? It's the same people. It was Scmoyoho all along. Linktree Find out more at http://20kleaguespod.com This podcast is powered by Pinecast.
"It's Corn" is one of the internet's latest obsessions, the result of a viral video being remixed into a song that has itself become viral. Brookyn's The Gregory Brothers are the group behind the hit and many other songified memes from the last decade, including "Bed Intruder Song," "Double Rainbow Song," and recently, "Chrissy, Wake Up," uploaded via their Youtube and TikTok handle Schmoyoho. Evan Gregory joins us.
This week on the Sweet and Sour Variety Hour, the single greatest audio achievement I've ever created; a montage of my favourite renditions of the Corn Kid (young man named Tariq) that blew up on TikTok. What a beautiful world it is when we can collectively marvel at the cuteness of one child enjoying his corn. That's at the very end of the hour. Evan and Andrew alchemically transmute this very podcast into High Art, thanks to a secondhand exposure to the Icelandic witch that humans know as Björk. With the help of known witchcraft expert Negin Farsad, they plumb the depths of not just Björk's lyrics & music, but her otherworldly powers. Our intrepid hosts explore the sub-sub-sub genre of pop-punk songs about high school love triangles by Berklee College of Music graduates. There's a lot to unpack! Jazz chords, Miley Cyrus's thanksgiving plans, and screaming the word NINTENDO, for starters. Along the way, Evan and Andrew use their intimate knowledge of loving but occasionally antagonistic brotherly relationships to ingratiate themselves with their boss. Guest: Jake Hurwitz Walk-in music: ‘Divided Sky' by Phish (the guitar solo duh); ‘Narcolepsy' by Third Eye Blind; ‘Are You for Real' by Nino Moschella Follow Punch Up The Jam on Twitter and Instagram Like the show? Evan and Andrew delve into the deep philosophical meanings & mysteries of Kenny Rogers' “The Gambler," a song in which technically more dying than gambling transpires. Meanwhile, while staring out the window of their podcast, they stumble upon a shocking secret that will turn the music industry on its head...and turn Punch Up The Jam into a true crime podcast forever... Just what was it that made Tom Petty so afraid that he had to shout from the rooftops, “I Won't Back Down??” Well, we got into it, and okay, it's pretty bad. It's a real heartbreaker. But a butterfly flaps its wings over an intentionally set house fire in Los Angeles, and 30 years later, it brought us together with Kristen Bartlett (Full Frontal with Samantha Bee) and Jason Gore (The Best Show) to deliver a punch that is so shocking it may have converted this show into a True Crime pod?? The wheels are flying off the car as guest Amir Blumenfeld invites *himself* into the punch like an 80s bully crashing the party, where all the nerds are just trying to have a good time drinking Brass Monkey. Hoo boy, Evan and Andrew try to make nice but it gets TENSE. Plus we discover that the song 'Brass Monkey' is so problematic that the Beastie Boys later disowned it. Against all odds, Evan and Andrew punch up a song not in their mother tongue. Along the way, they discover that Daddy Yankee's reggaeton anthem 'Gasolina' may not be about road trips, discover that Daddy Yankee may not have actually been about to play for the Seattle Mariners when he was shot by a stray bullet, and discover it's not just English Majors who love to talk about horny metaphors. Because a butterfly flapped its wings in Kamchatka, global wind patterns shifted, causing the accursed demon Simon Cowell to arise, which backfired for the agents of hell when his reign led to the ascent of the verified seraphim Kelly Clarkson, because of which we now have the song "Because Of You." Evan and Andrew are joined by old friend Akilah Hughes to unpack the many causal relationships in this tragic tune. Follow Punch Up The Jam on Twitter and Instagram Like the show? Furb, the founder of the Freedom Book Club, joins GG in this program that concentrates on the evils of a proposal in Europe: a bill to outlaw any seeds and plants not approved by the EU politicians. As Gardner Goldsmith shows, this idea goes back to the 1960's, and IS something that "Conspiracy Theorist" folks have been warning was in the works. We give them the credit they deserve, and try to sound the alarm. Genetic fascism is just around the bend when it comes to food in the EU. Music? Well, we offer The Buzzcocks "Something's Gone Wrong Again", Killing Joke "The Wait", The Pagans "Eyes of Satan" (a bunch of 17 yr old Ohio punks), The Demons "I'll Make you Sorry", Curtis Mayfield "Superfly", Schmoyoho's new one "Dead Giveaway" based on interviews with Charles Ramsey, the guy who found three missing/kidnapped girls in Ohio, Motorhead "Killed by Death", WIRE "12 Times U" (a new play on and remix of their classic "1,2, x U"), Apollo Smile "Dune Buggy", and Paul Weller "7&3 Was the Striker's Name" off "Wake Up the Nation".
