HEAVY Music Interviews
To The Moon And back With BJORN STRID From NIGHT FLIGHT ORCHESTRA

HEAVY Music Interviews

Interview by Kris PetersThe seventh studio album for Night Flight Orchestra was always going to be difficult given the passing of original member David Andersson between releases.Music is an emotional form of expression naturally, but when having to negotiate loss and sorrow, any new music could quite easily be skewered too far in that direction and become almost self-indulgent.Not that that is a bad thing, but talking with frontman Bjorn Strid you get the feeling that he and the rest of NFO wanted to pay honour and respect to David's legacy and music by capturing themselves at optimal strength and unity on both a sonic and personal plane. The resulting body of work, Give Us The Moon - which is released on Friday, January 31 - takes the listener on an exciting sonic journey, balancing between uplifting escapism and captivating stories inspired by real life events. The album's themes span the likes of heroines and temptresses to liberation and romantic nostalgia, set to backdrops of abandoned cities and cosmic tides. The album is free from the limitations of one genre or style, although many of the soundscapes of the album draw inspiration from the 80s, making the album a varied, exciting adventure. Give Us The Moon is produced by THE NIGHT FLIGHT ORCHESTRA and Sebastian Forslund, who also mixed the album, and is mastered by Plec Johansson at award-winning The Panic Room Studios. To celebrate the release of the new full-length, THE NIGHT FLIGHT ORCHESTRA will embark on a full European tour in late January, 2025. Boarding is completed - fasten your seatbelts and enjoy the flight!HEAVY sat down recently with Strid to discuss the new album and delve into its cinematic nature."It's a real special album," he began. "It's the first one without David Andersson, who sadly passed away two years ago, and it's been a special journey putting this album together. We wanted to create something really uplifting and empowering, and make it even more cinematic and dreamy than before. But the general guiding star was to make something really positive… but still multi-layered. What we have here is an explosion of emotions running through the album. It's very diverse, but it all sits together in the end. You just need to listen to the album to really get into it and get what we're saying. It's gonna be a beautiful ride."In the full interview we ask Bjorn if he still gets the same rush as an album release approaches or if that fades over time, he explains the terms cinematic and soundscape and how they relate to NFO's music, the musical direction of the album, bettering yourself musically, the early days of Night Flight Orchestra and where they fit in, the musical expansion of the band over each album, upcoming shows and more.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

Welcome to another installment of our ongoing series called “Grave Mistakes: They Shoulda Been Huge!!!”. This time we should re-title it, “Should Be Huge!!!” as this is an active and current band featuring members of other much heavier sounding bands. We are talking this week about the side project of the Swedish metal bands Soilwork and Arch Enemy: the amazingly awesome retro-sounding band THE NIGHT FLIGHT ORCHESTRA! Imagine if Foreigner, Toto, and Survivor had a metal love child and you get this awesome band. If you don't know this band, or if you are only vaguely familiar with them; do yourself a favor and check this out. You may want to put on your workout gear and set up your phone to record a video because you're going to want to create an awesome montage while listening to this! This episode is rooted in our Should Have Been category. This is a band that has mastered the ability to recreate those fist pumpingly perfect sounds of AOR / Arena Rock gold that originally existed in the late 70s / early 80s. Unfortunately, their brilliance and innovation in reviving this genre have not been recognized on this side of the Atlantic as much as it deserves. We think they SHOULD BE HUGER… and we are ready to fly that banner proudly!Songs this week include:The Night Flight Orchestra – “Stella Ain't No Dove” from Internal Affairs (2012)The Night Flight Orchestra - “Living For The Nighttime” from Skyline Whispers (2015)The Night Flight Orchestra - “Gemini” from Amber Galactic (2017)The Night Flight Orchestra - “The Last Of The Independent Romantics” from Sometimes The World Ain't Enough (2018)The Night Flight Orchestra - “Divinyls” from Aeromantic (2020)The Night Flight Orchestra - “Midnight Marvelous” from Aeromantic II (2021)The Night Flight Orchestra – “Domino” from Amber Galactic (2017)Please subscribe everywhere that you listen to podcasts!Visit us: https://inobscuria.com/https://www.facebook.com/InObscuriahttps://twitter.com/inobscuriahttps://www.instagram.com/inobscuria/Buy cool stuff with our logo on it!: https://www.redbubble.com/people/InObscuria?asc=uCheck out Robert's amazing fire sculptures and metal workings here: http://flamewerx.com/If you'd like to check out Kevin's band THE SWEAR, take a listen on all streaming services or pick up a digital copy of their latest release here: https://theswear.bandcamp.com/If you want to hear Robert and Kevin's band from the late 90s – early 00s BIG JACK PNEUMATIC, check it out here: https://bigjackpnuematic.bandcamp.com/

In this special bonus episode we take a break from our break to welcome Ed Sheeran and his manager Stuart Camp onto the podcast! We were honoured to host the first interview with both Ed and Stuart together. Over the years the pair have developed a unique friendship, and Stuart and his wife are even godparents to Ed's daughter Lyra. They still disagree on one big thing, however. Ed is a huge Potter superfan. Stuart isn't.  We ask why Ed makes Stuart carry a photo of the Weasley twins in his wallet at all times, which ridiculous purchase Stuart had to talk Ed out of, and why Ed asked Rupert Grint to play him in the music video for 'Lego House'. In this episode we chat to graphic design duo MinaLima. Throughout the Harry Potter films, Miraphora Mina and Eduardo Lima worked together to concoct the style at the heart of the films, from the intricately detailed Marauder’s Map, the wonderfully bonkers Daily Prophet and our favourite, the fantastical Weasleys’ Wizard Wheezes inventions.   We find out why the first attempt at Weasleys’ Wizard Wheezes wasn’t ‘vulgar’ enough, what Mira and Eduardo think about seeing their designs as tattoos and how the duo snuck their names into so many of their Potter designs.   Since the last Potter film came out, MinaLima have been busy designing Diagon Alley at the Universal Orlando Resort and creating the graphic props for Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, as well as for films outside the Potter world including Sweeney Todd and The Golden Compass. They’ve also illustrated a beautiful collection of classic novels for Harper Collins and opened stores in London, Osaka and New York. All that changed in March 2005 when a catastrophic training accident ended his career and turned his life upside down. We chat to Matt about the accident, learn what made him a 'nightmare child' and find out how Matt pulls the sympathy card to get the last chocolate bar. In this episode we talk to ‘the girl who silenced the world for five minutes’, Severn Cullis-Suzuki.    At just twelve years old Severn stunned the 1992 UN Earth Summit with a passionate speech about the growing environmental crisis.    Known as ‘yesterday’s Greta Thunberg’, Severn didn’t pull any punches in her criticism of the world leaders present.   Now that more than thirty years have passed we ask Severn how her life has been shaped by those five minutes.   We discuss how our childhood choices can influence our whole lives (hey Harry Potter!), how ‘warrior’ Greta is picking up the eco baton despite the trolls, and how Severn almost gave birth in front of a film crew, all thanks to her dad!   You can find out more about Severn’s advocacy work and activism here.    Clips of Severn’s speech were taken from the ‘We Canada’ YouTube page with thanks.
