Episode Summary:  Do you constantly compare yourself with others? On social media, in your neighborhood, at church, or in the school drop-off lane, do you push yourself to prove that you measure up . . . and then feel ashamed when you don't? Measuring yourself against others isn't healthy. And it isn't God's plan. In fact, the way of Jesus is completely upside down from this measure-up world. He invites us to follow him and be restored to freedom, confidence, and joy. Join me with Shannon Popkin as we address how to stop comparing yourself to others. Quotables from the episode: The constant effort to prove that I measure up (or try to hide when I don't), does not lead to a life of freedom and joy. Here's what does: learning to live me-free. At its root, comparison places value on our differences. Comparison is really a pride issue—it keeps us focused on ourselves. When we compare ourselves to others, we focus on how we measure up (or don't) like lines on a measuring glass. But Jesus points out the spout—that place where we pour out on others. Comparison 1) distracts me from my purpose; 2) depletes my productivity, and 3) destroys our potential. When we fall prey to comparison, we need to ask ourselves “Is this something Jesus would say to me?” Comparison is a tactic of the enemy, whether we are comparing our appearance, our status, our sin, or even our ministry for Jesus to others'. Humility is a key to combatting comparison. Comparison is often bred because we don't desire to be “less than” others, but in God's economy those who are the least, are considered the greatest. There is NO exclusivity in the kingdom of God. Healthy comparison includes those times we are inspired and learn from others, and are then encouraged to be and do what I am uniquely called to do. Comparison divides us and causes us to back away, when God is calling us to move toward him! When tempted to compare yourself to others, ask yourself “who am I listening to?” Scripture says “my sheep know my voice,” so be sure you are listening for God's voice.   Scripture References: Philippians 2:5-7 ESV Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus,[a] 6 who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped,[b] 7 but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant James 3:14-15 ESV But if you have bitter jealousy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not boast and be false to the truth. 15 This is not the wisdom that comes down from above, but is earthly, unspiritual, demonic. Matthew 20:26-27 ESV But whoever would be great among you must be your servant,[c] 27 and whoever would be first among you must be your slave,[d] 28 even as the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve,    Recommended Resources:  Comparison Girl: Lessons from Jesus on Me-Free Living in a Measure-Up World by Shannon Popkin Control Girl by Shannon Popkin The Hem of His Garment: Reaching Out to God When Pain Overwhelms by Dr. Michelle Bengtson YouVersion 5-Day Devotional Reaching Out To God When Pain Overwhelms   Today is Going to be a Good Day: 90 Promises to Start Your Day Off Right by Dr. Michelle Bengtson, winner of the AWSA 2023 Inspirational Gift Book of the Year Award, the Christian Literary Awards Reader's Choice Award in four categories, and the Christian Literary Awards Henri Award for Devotionals YouVersion 7-Day Devotional, Today is Going to be a Good Day YouVersion 7-Day Devotional, Today is Going to be Another Good Day Breaking Anxiety's Grip: How to Reclaim the Peace God Promises by Dr. Michelle Bengtson Breaking Anxiety's Grip Free Study Guide Free 7-Day YouVersion Bible Reading Plan for Breaking Anxiety's Grip Hope Prevails: Insights from a Doctor's Personal Journey Through Depression by Dr. Michelle Bengtson, winner of the Christian Literary Award Reader's Choice Award Hope Prevails Bible Study by Dr. Michelle Bengtson, winner of the Christian Literary Award Reader's Choice Award Trusting God Through Cancer 1 Trusting God Through Cancer 2 Revive & Thrive Women's Conference Subdue Stress and Anxiety: Fifteen Experts Offer Comprehensive Tools in Ten Minutes a Day. So Much More: Creating Space for God (Lectio Divina and Scripture Meditation)

Comparison is sneaky. One minute we're humming along, content with our life and calling – then suddenly, comparison sneaks in, making us distracted and discontent. We all deal with comparison, measuring ourselves against others. It's a tactic of our enemy to throw us off course. But Jesus has better for us. Shannon Popkin is the author of Comparison Girl, and host of the Live Like It's True podcast. In this conversation, Shannon challenges us with Jesus's words and actions to help us lay aside destructive comparisons and embrace the freedom of living in our calling and gifts. Some highlights from our conversation: Shannon tells us the three ways comparison can throw us off track. It can distract us, deplete us, and destroy us. Shannon shares how she struggled with comparison and what the Lord started to show her in Scripture. We discuss how Jesus used comparison as a teaching tool. For example, He says Mary chose what was better than Martha, and she holds up the widow who gave her last two coins as an example of generosity. When we compare ourselves to these people, they positively challenge us to be more whom we are created to be. This means not all comparison is bad. So, how do we know the difference? Shannon says it simply: we evaluate if it's pride or humility. We talk about the passage we meditated on from Philippians and how Jesus exemplified laying aside all his advantages in an act of ultimate humility. Shannon shared how she meditated on the passage in a different translation (the CSB), which says, “did not consider equality with God as something to be exploited” instead of “used for his own advantage.” We discussed the word “exploited” and what it triggered for both of us. Finally, Shannon gives us a few practical ways to lay aside comparisons during this Lenten season and beyond.   You can connect with Shannon at: https://www.shannonpopkin.com/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/shannonpopkin/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/shanpopkin/ Listen to the Live Like It's True Podcast: https://www.shannonpopkin.com/bible-podcast/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

How can you make sure you have a well-spent summer? For today's episode, Stephanie has curated three of her most important not-so-secret secrets for a successful summer in particular, and a successful life in general: - Read your Bible to grow closer to the Lord and develop intimacy with Him; - Don't compare to others, but seek to serve them in humility; - Take time to rest, worship, and laugh. For each of these, Stephanie welcomes a dear friend to highlight each element today. So you're getting THREE conversations in this one episode! It is our special Summer gift to you, our beloved audience. First Stephanie welcomes Shadia Hrichi who shares with us her own journey towards deep intimacy with God. They discuss Hagar, a very special woman in the Bible who gets to give God one of His names - "the God who sees me." They also mostly focus on Tamar, whose powerful story of brokenness is redeemed by the only One who is able to deliver us from our bondage, fear, and trials. Do you need to be reminded that God is FOR you? You are not alone, and He is in every detail of your life. He is especially attentive when things are not going as you want them to - which is probably the case for most of us right now, in this season of the world when everything seems upside down and when it might feel that God is distant! He is closer than ever to the brokenhearted. Then Stephanie welcomes Shannon Popkin who reminds us that we are all attacked by the very real enemy of our soul who seeks to distract us from the Lord. Using the same old tricks that have worked for thousands of years, the devil seeks to entice us to compare to one another because that is exactly what he did with God - he wanted to be better than God Himself. We live in a culture that tells us that, unless we are number one, we are worthless. This is deeply damaging to the very fabric of our soul. With her book "Comparison Girl", Shannon reminds us that the cure towards wholesome healing is simple - yet not easy: we are never happier than when we take our eyes off of ourselves, and focus on another. Humility and other-centered service is the simple yet overlooked secret to a fulfilling life. Jesus role-modeled it for us, and invites us to step closer to His heart through selfless humility. How simple, yet how profound! Finally, Stephanie is thrilled to welcome Marci Seither who invites you to join her for a summer of pondering the goodness of God through rest, laughter and meditation. In her new devotional, Lakeside Retreat, Marci beckons us to experience God in the daily, to embrace Him in the simple, and to delight in Him in every moment. Her book is the perfect summer getaway to come back refreshed, renewed, and more in love with God than ever. MEET MARCI SEITHER Marci Seither's writing career began after her humor article was published in a small-town newspaper. Episode 106 - Stephanie welcomes Erica Wiggenhorn, bestselling Bible Study author, national speaker, and now releasing her brand new book, Letting God be enough. So, with that kind of book title, you can certainly expect a vulnerable conversation about self-introspection, daring to look at what's inside our hearts—the good, the bad and the ugly! What can we learn about our heavenly Father to overcome our fear of failure and inadequacy? Erica and Stephanie are close friends, and this conversation will probably feel like you're joining two friends over for coffee. We talk about our hearts, our sinfulness, and our desperate hunger for God. Do you feel like you're missing out on some secret other people know? Do you wonder why their faith seems so strong? Are you curious about how they find success around every corner, or their marriage seems so happy? Do you wonder how they're such good parents, or have such successful careers? It's easy to feel like things fall into place so easily for others while you're striving hard to keep life from falling apart. In a world where “never enough” is the norm, what do you do with those feelings of inadequacy? Do you strive more or expect less? And how does God fit into the equation? What are you afraid of, that you are hiding deep inside yourself and not dare to talk about? Erica shares a profound and hilarious story about finding dead lizards in her son's bedroom and compels us to ask: What are the squashed Lizzies that you have hidden in your spirit sock drawer? Only one way to find out. Have you ever felt that you were not enough? That you were a fake? That if people knew you, they would discover that you are not as amazing as they think you are? Are you afraid to reveal that you don't have it as together as you've been portraying? So today, we talk about imposter syndrome, about the fear to be “found out” as insufficient. God teaches us not to seek approval of our perceptions, but of Himself. Erica dives into the meaning of God's love and acceptance, and it might just transform your relationship with your Father who delights in you so powerfully, and has provided all you need for approval and acceptance. Shannon Popkin invites women to leave measure-up comparison behind and connect with those around them by choosing Jesus's me-free way of living. It's a real chance to break free from the shackles of comparison.Popkin confesses her own struggle with comparison literally goes as far back as she can remember and suspects her readers can relate. Her earliest memory is of her four-year-old self holding her songbook upside down in church. When a woman from the pew behind reached forward to turn the book right side up, Popkin felt embarrassed and exposed—clearly the watching world now knew she could not read. It may seem silly in retrospect, but Popkin admits the same could be said of many of her current struggles. “Why do I worry about being exposed as a less-than-perfect mom? Or a middle-aged woman who struggles with her weight? Or a Christian who still sins? My heart, since childhood, has been bent on perfectionism, pride, and measuring up—which has not led to great freedom and joy. Instead, it's led to a great fear of what people think and a great dread of being found lacking.”Comparison follows women through every stage of life, leading either to a sense of superiority (pride, perfectionism, arrogance, or judgmental criticism) or inferiority (insecurity, shame, jealousy, and self-consciousness). Satan loves to perpetuate comparison-driven bondage and isolation, but Jesus wants to set women free.Equating our lives to a measuring cup, Popkin invites readers to live by the spout, not by the lines. “Picture yourself holding a glass measuring cup with red lines on the side. Mingled in your cup are all the things which set you apart—your gifts, aptitudes, and talents. Your personality is mixed in, along with your family background. This cup holds your life's potential, measured out by God. Satan wants you to focus on the lines—holding your cup next to this person's and that one's. He says that to make something of yourself, you have to measure up—then he shames you when you don't,” she explains. “Jesus, however, turns your attention to your measuring cup's spout, saying that you were designed, not to measure up, but to pour yourself out. And he shows you how it's done. He lived by the spout, emptying himself of status and pouring his life out on the cross, giving his life as a ransom for many.”Suited for both individual and group study, Comparison Girl is a six-week Bible study that guides readers to examine conversations Jesus had and parables he shared with disciples, tax collectors, and Pharisees, who also were comparing. Each chapter is divided into lessons, allowing women on a time budget to read a Bible passage, engage in a complete train of thought related to the topic, and then make the content personal—all in one sitting. Rather than feeling preached to, women will engage with Popkin's informal teaching tone as if they're meeting with a trusted friend.Readers of Popkin's best-selling release Control Girl may find themselves in Comparison Girl as well. “I wrestle daily with comparison, and I've noticed that my struggles with control and comparison are related. As I look to the side, measuring myself against others, I'm often laser-focused on things that are out of my control,” she admits. Yet, there is hope. “You are different from other people by God's intentional design. Anything in your measuring cup is a gift from Him. As you tip your cupand pour into others, the measuring stops. The more you pour, the more God fills your cup with freedom, confidence, and joy.”Website:ShannonPopkin.comInsta @ShannonPopkinTwitter @ShannonPopkinBook: Comparison Girlhttps://www.lainelawsoncraft.comFacebookLaine Lawson CraftInstagram@lainelawsoncraftTwitter@lainelawsoncrft

Setting an easier goal so I feel excited when I break it instead of just feeling supppper behind. Making it habit to listen through audiobooks again in nooks and crannies. My favorite books read so far this year: You can follow me over on Goodreads to keep up to date on what I'm reading. But here's some of our favs! As a family we are currently reading through the Chronicles of Narnia.
