Baylor has made the decision to retain Blake Shapen as their starting quarterback for the upcoming season. Coach Dave Aranda confirmed this choice after a spring competition that involved Sawyer Robertson, a transfer from Mississippi State. Shapen secured the starting position in the previous spring and maintained it throughout a challenging 2022 season. Despite ups and downs, he completed 63.3% of his passes, accumulating 2,790 yards, 18 touchdowns, and 10 interceptions. Baylor, the reigning Big 12 champion, ended the season with a 6-7 overall record and 4-5 in conference play. Hailing from Shreveport, Louisiana, Shapen emerged as a talented freshman in 2021, impressing with 596 passing yards and five touchdowns. He outperformed the incumbent starter, Gerry Bohanon, during the spring competition, prompting Bohanon to transfer to South Florida. Shapen exhibited a strong start, delivering seven touchdowns and only one interception in the initial four games, showcasing his accuracy. However, he encountered challenges in Big 12 play, with three games featuring multiple interceptions, and he failed to surpass 270 passing yards in his last seven games. Sawyer Robertson, ranked 56th overall in ESPN's 2021 class, saw action in five games for Mississippi State last season. Aranda acknowledged Robertson's progress during spring practice but ultimately decided that Shapen had earned the right to retain the starting role. Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! Parlay that with Kyron Drones transferring, and Dave Aranda, Jeff Grimes and Shawn Bell have another complicated offseason ahead. Going by the numbers, here's a look at Baylor's only remaining scholarship quarterback: In September, Shapen started his season with seven touchdowns, one interception and 773 passing yards. Few questioned the Big 12 Championship quarterback at this juncture in the season, but his honeymoon was up. In November, with everyone expecting Shapen to have developed into a seasoned quarterback, it all fell apart. Baylor football sent Gerry Bohanon into the transfer portal to start Blake Shapen at quarterback this season. This is not a conversation of whether or not Dave Aranda regrets this decision, but this is a conversation about how Shapen performed in the Bears' 6-6 campaign. Here's a hint for you: it wasn't great. Shapen actually regressed over the course of the year, and that just won't do. Now, for a much lighter conversation, we have a good view of where Baylor will go bowling. It will be the Liberty Bowl, Texas Bowl or Guaranteed Rate Bowl. Book your tickets to each. Baylor football's third season under Dave Aranda was anything but what we all expected. Most Bears' fans and analysts would have put the team's floor at eight wins, but here they sit at 6-6 after the year. Even wins on the road against Oklahoma, Texas Tech and Iowa State could not amount to competing for the Big 12 championship. This season was simply disappointing. Then there's the quarterback conversation. For Baylor, Blake Shapen just did not produce what he was supposed to. The team was 6-6, and the quarterback play was seriously a factor. Shapen just never came along, and his confidence was consistently low. Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! LinkedIn LinkedIn jobs helps you find the candidates you want to talk to, faster. It was a rough night in Waco for the Baylor Bears as they were unable to score a touchdown in a 31-3 beating by the Kansas State Wildcats. It was an incredible turnout in a blackout themed game for the fans, but the team wasn't able to rise to the occasion. Travis rides solo this week and he kicks off the episode with a short, yes short, recap of the Kansas State game. He doesn't mince words as he quickly admits the Bears were flat out embarrassed at home. Travis was disappointed in the defensive gameplan to keep coming with the corner blitz and the inability to stop Deuce Vaughn. Offensively, the Bears weren't able to score a TD and ended the game with only 23 rushes, 7 of which were from Blake Shapen. Travis then answers a few fan questions with one revolving around choosing Shapen as Baylor's starting QB this year. He answers if he thinks it was a mistake or not to ride with Blake Shapen this year and lays out the reasons behind it. Has Shapen hit his ceiling and is it time to see what we have in Drones? Finally, Travis turns his attention to the matchup vs the undefeated TCU Horned Frogs as they visit Waco on Saturday. TCU will be the best offense the Bears have faced all year and one of the most explosive offenses in the country that has 13 TD's of over 50 yards. Baylor will have to find a way to limit Quentin Johnston and Kendre Miller as they both can score any time they touch the ball. Travis wraps up with his "Bear Necessities" and of course a game prediction. Bear with us this week and get ready for a massive rivalry game vs TCU. It's always an exciting game when these two teams face each other and regardless of each other's records it seems to always be a close game. Baylor has a chance to avenge its loss to TCU last year that likely kept them out of the College Football Playoff and return the favor. We'll find out if they can on Saturday! Lee opens the show by taking an unwarranted shot at Grant to cover up for his lack of show prep. They then dive into Billy Bowman's health and the amount of snaps he played vs. Iowa State. Lee thinks he'll be back starting and playing a bunch this week against Baylor (1:30). Jovantae Barnes is a game time decision this week. Eric Gray will once again be super important this week and it appears we have discovered that UCF transfer RB Bentavious Thompson is a non-factor on this team (10:05). Lee was really hard on Woodi Washington last episode. Well, Lee was wrong to be so critical and Grant was right (18:00). C.J. Coldon is still not playing very many snaps. Freshman Gentry Williams looked good in very limited playing time vs. ISU. It also seems like they've tightened up the DB rotations, and what happened to Justin Harrington and Kani Walker (24:05)? OU's a short favorite against Baylor, but the Bears may be a lot better than their record indicates. Lee likes what he's seen from Blake Shapen, even though he didn't want to like him. Grant says Shapen has been up & down this year. OU may be able to make some plays with special teams this Saturday (31:40). Jeff Grimes is a really good OC, but Baylor does have tendencies on offense that OU could possibly recognize and anticipate certain plays and pass routes. Grant says Alex Grinch's system was horrible against Grimes' system (42:20). Lee thinks the OU offense has an opportunity to steal some yards against Baylor. Grant wants the Sooners' offense to throw it around the yard on Baylor's secondary (49:05). Does anybody care about the first CFP rankings (58:20)? We take a look at the Big 12 slate, which includes an intriguing OSU-Kansas matchup from a betting perspective. And are oddsmakers telling us to hammer Iowa State against WVU? Grant shares a betting story about his time in the free state of Iowa last weekend (1:03:05)? We make our weekly picks. Games include Oregon St.-Washington/Tennessee-Georgia/Texas-Kansas St./Clemson-Notre Dame/Wake Forest-NC State (1:14:00). Dave Aranda has bounced back from a bad first year at Baylor. The Baylor Bears bounced back last weekend with a 35-23 win over the Kansas Jayhawks. The Jayhawks made it interesting after coming back down 28-3 at half, but the Bears were able to fend them off with a late 4th quarter touchdown. Now Baylor will head to Lubbock on Saturday for a matchup with the Texas Tech Red Raiders in their blackout game. This week Travis is joined by former Baylor QB Seth Russell. The conversation begins with discussing the pair's favorite Halloween candies and what can be left out moving forward. Seth has an unusual candy that he thinks is awful and has no place in the month of October. The boys will then talk some Baylor Football starting with the mindset of the team after 7 games and if they should still be setting their minds on a Big 12 Championship. Seth thinks the Bears still have a lot left to play for and Travis agrees. Then they'll jump into the Kansas game and how the Jayhawks were able to make somewhat of a comeback. Travis then dives deep into Seth's thoughts on the play of Blake Shapen. Seth discusses Shapen's biggest strengths and what he wants to see Shapen improve on. Seth isn't too concerned about Shapen's fumbles over the last 2 weeks and trusts the coaches will coach him up on escaping the pocket a little better. Next they'll touch briefly on the defense and the lack of pass rush generated so far this year before ending with a preview of Texas Tech. Seth wants to see the Bears line up and play within themselves and expects the Tech crowd to be wild (and maybe throw some batteries... tortillas for sure though).  Bear with us as we get ready for a great matchup in Lubbock. Baylor Bears football lost a shootout against West Virginia, 43-40, following quarterback Blake Shapen leaving in the third quarter after a targeting.  The Bears have never won in Morgantown, and that did not change this week. What's more, Shapen left the game in the third quarter after a clear targeting call, and the keys were turned over to Kyron Drones. The redshirt freshman Drones entered a tight game without any significant playing time this season, and he finished with 95 yards and a score. He did enough for Baylor to stay in the game, but the defense was nowhere to be found. Honing in on the first half, Baylor's offense circa 2014 returned. Shapen threw for 294 yards. Holmes had four receptions for 157 yards and a score. The Bears' secondary allowed just 109 passing yards. And that was all in the opening 30 minutes. Later on, John Mayers would hit a 44-yard field goal to tie the game at 40 apiece, but West Virginia had plenty of time to drive the field. That's exactly what the Mountaineers did. A 22-yard field goal with under a minute to go iced the game. Drones just wasn't ready to drive the team the length of the field in crunch time.  Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! Blake Shapen played his best game of the season. Dave Aranda and Jeff Grimes drafted up a game plan that Shapen turned into 345 passing yards. He also threw two scores. What's more, the team totaled over 450 yards of offense and held Spencer Sanders to less than 200 yards passing. Baylor lost by double-digits. Oklahoma State is simply a better football team than Baylor. There are plenty of excuses to be made, and the rate of fourth-down conversions along with a pitch play that resulted in a safety is bad. But Baylor pretty much played to its potential. The secondary is shaky. The wide receivers aren't elite. The offensive line is not what it was last season. Blake Shapen was dismal enough against BYU that Baylor's coach Dave Aranda admitted to not having confidence in the passing game. The Bears ran the football 52 times simply out of necessity. As that is obviously not a winning recipe, Baylor fell in the hostile road environment. Fast forward to Saturday's game against Iowa State, and everything seems to have changed. Shapen grew up. The Louisiana native completed 19-26 passing for 238 yards and three touchdowns. It was far and away his best offensive output this season, and he earned himself a 188 QBR for the performance. That helped Baylor to a 31-24 win over the Cyclones. Shapen was an X-factor in keeping Jeff Grimes' offense churning all day long. Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! Dave Aranda got his second quality road win as Baylor football's head coach with a 31-24 defeat of Matt Campbell and Iowa State on Saturday. In the win, the Bears took Aranda's road record to 4-8 overall. Sure, that still is not an elite record, but this win is one that gets the program back on track. While Aranda has been pressed about his team's struggles on the road at recent press conferences, it was apparent that players like Blake Shapen handled the 65,000 Iowa State fans at Jack Trice Stadium much better than the raucous environment at BYU two weeks ago. Against BYU, Baylor ran the ball 52 times to take the ball out of Shapen's hands. Against Iowa State, Jeff Grimes dialed up a great gameplan and the young quarterback delivered. He notched 238 yards on 19-26 through the air to accompany three passing touchdowns. Oh, and Shapen had no interceptions. How is that for performing on the road? No. 17 Baylor football beat Texas State to climb back above .500, but Drake wasn't all that impressed with the way the Bears performed. The Green and Gold struggled mightily in the first half, and the team was dangerously close to a 14-14 score at the break rather than the actual 21-7 lead. Dave Aranda even mentioned in the press conference that the team was tense at halftime and needed a breather. Of course, everything did come together in the end. Baylor tallied 293 yards on the ground and put up 42 points. That's awesome. However, Blake Shapen was still anything but pristine. Shapen finished a mediocre 15/26 passing with 184 yards, one touchdown and one interception. For the second week in a row, he just didn't look like the truth. Nonetheless, the defense was good. The secondary played much better. Texas State only had 82 rush yards. Three of their ball carriers had negative yardage. That part was great. But there's still a lot to tweak before heading into the teeth of Big 12 play this Saturday. Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! Blake Shapen had a bad game on Saturday. At 18-28 passing for just 137 yards and a score, Baylor understood Shapen was having an off day and simply stopped throwing the ball. The Bears carried the pigskin 52 times. Shapen did not run the ball for a positive gain once. That is concerning. However, every football player has those games. The outside noise crept into Shapen's head against BYU, and he blinked. But that's going to happen. A young, relatively inexperienced quarterback who had never seen that type of atmosphere is meant to struggle. Don't think for a moment that it surprised Dave Aranda or his staff. These goes know their personnel. So where does Baylor go from here? Well they ride Blake Shapen into the sunset, still. He hasn't lost his stripes or made the staff question his skill as a quarterback. He had a bad day. You probably had like three bad days at your work last week. I know I did. The Baylor football team lost for the first time since that dreaded TCU game last season on Saturday when it traveled to Provo, Utah to meet BYU. The Cougars were not only better prepared for this game, but their defensive plan of attack rarely flinched. The A1 goal of the Cougars was to hinder Blake Shapen, and hinder the young quarterback they did. Shapen finished the game 18-28 with 137 yards passing and a touchdown. That is not good. However, it isn't exactly what lost Baylor the game. Shapen's -22 yards on the ground took care of that. The one-dimensional nature of the quarterback on Saturday was staggering. BYU took advantage of knowing Shapen would never be on the run, and the Cougar defense had its way. The Bears were solid defensively, and there is little to harshly critique on that side of the ball. It's the offense that gets the blame for this one. If your defense only allows 20 points in regulation, you have to score to honor that. Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! BYU took advantage of knowing Shapen would never be on the run, and the Cougar defense had its way.The Bears were solid defensively, and there is little to harshly critique on that side of the ball. It's the offense that gets the blame for this one. If your defense only allows 20 points in regulation, you have to score to honor that.Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors!LinkedInLinkedIn jobs helps you find the candidates you want to talk to, faster. What a wild night it was in Provo, Utah as the Bears fell in double OT 26-20 to the BYU Cougars. It was a sloppy and undisciplined game for the Bears, but they somehow managed to stay in the game with a chance to win at the end. From full moons, cougar tails, and 60,000 plus screaming mormons it is sure to be the toughest atmosphere Baylor will see this year even with trips to Austin and Norman in the future. Travis kicks off this episode with Coach Aranda's opening statements from his BYU postgame press conference. Aranda opened his statements with a smile and encouraging words about the team, and how he was proud of the way they fought. It was just what Travis needed to hear at 2:30am on a Sunday morning to finally get some sleep.  We'll keep the positive vibes flowing as Travis takes a step back to explain his perspective on how he likes Baylor's position in relation to the other Big 12 teams. Most other teams in the league won't face a tough road environment or adversity until league play begins, and Baylor will have faced both while still 0-0 in conference play.  Then Travis takes a deep dive into the game to explain what he thinks went wrong and why. At some point the Baylor offense didn't trust Shapen to throw the ball, and that showed as Baylor rushed the ball 52 times. Travis is concerned with the WR group and thinks someone needs to step up as a playmaker before it's too late. But... as badly as Baylor played they still had a chance to win at the end of the game. And Travis thinks that's something to be proud of against a Top #15 team on the road.  Finally we'll turn the page on what was last weekend and move on to Texas State. Travis wants to see the team build their overall confidence, and specifically to see Shapen develop rapport with his WR's. Don't be shocked to see the starters play the entire game even if Baylor is up by 30. The offense needs to find an identity, and this is the last opportunity to do so before starting Big 12 conference play. Baylor and BYU mark possibly the biggest game in college football this season. This is a matchup that hosts of Locked On Baylor have predicted to be a loss time after time, but things change this week with Puka Nacua and Gunner Romney both being below 100%. That is a game changer. Thus, Drake is flipping his prediction and giving Baylor a 28-24 nod in this week's game. As for the typical Friday co-host the Pigskin Preacher, Scotty Swingler is also giving Baylor the nod in a higher-scoring matchup 38-31. No matter what, a large portion of this game hinges on the arm — and legs — of Blake Shapen. Baylor, especially on the road, Furthermore, Baylor is still the bigger, faster and stronger team. The atmosphere and elevation will play into this game, but that won't change the vast size difference in these two teams. From Siaki Ika to Gabe Hall to Connor Galvin, Baylor is simply huge. The No. 10 Baylor Bears (1-0) rout UAlbany (0-1), 69-10, to remain undefeated in season openers under Dave Aranda. UAlbany won the coin toss and elected to receive. A three and out ensued. It took Baylor six plays to gain the 76 yards needed to score. Thus began a long evening of playing from behind for the Great Danes.  The Bears were bigger, faster and stronger, and it was evident early. Alongside Blake Shapen's strike to receiver Monaray Baldwin, running back Sqwirl Williams bulled in a touchdown from four yards out and Gavin Holmes flexed the play of the game with a punt return touchdown.  It was 21-0. The clock still read 5:37 remaining in the first quarter. Mercy was abundant, though. Baylor would allow a UAlbany touchdown on the final play of the first quarter to cut the lead to 21-7. Despite a slower second quarter, the Bears did answer with a 38-yard touchdown from Shapen to Hal Presley with 11:55 remaining in the half. The Green and Gold then closed the quarter with a one-yard Shapen touchdown run to take a 35-7 lead into the break.  The second half was more of the same — Baylor having its way. The Bears took six plays to gain 80 yards on the opening drive of the half, capped by a 50-yard touchdown run by Baldwin. It was 42-7. Parlaying the humidity, crickets and lopsided score, Bears fans felt it wise to hit the exits. They did not miss much the rest of the way. A healthy portion of Baylor starters saw their night end in the middle of the third quarter. Shapen didn't throw a ball on the one drive he got in the second half. His stats closed right where they sat at halftime.  To close things out, Kyron Drones scored. Richard Reese scored. Then he scored again. And Qualan Jones added the exclamation point. Baylor finished with 573 yards. UAlbany was held to 236. The Bears had seven rushing touchdowns. UAlbany will have to wait until next week for its first. Baylor's completion percentage ended at 81%. Albany will board a flight with their QBs at 43%. Baylor rolled 69-10. The Bears won, Dave Aranda collected his third opening game wins in three tries and the Line stayed.  Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! AP Preseason Top 25 and Season Predictions

All 4 Downs

Welcome to another edition of All 4 Downs.  We are two weeks away from the start of the 2022-23 College football season and this past Monday, August 15, the AP Preseason Top 25 Poll was published.  The top 5 teams mirror the coaches poll.  Alabama Ohio State Georgia Clemson Notre Dame The top ten teams are the same but in different order.  Sticking with the top ten teams from the AP rankings is my focus as I make a prediction of this season's record.  Starting with number 10, The Big 12 Champions and the Allstate Sugar Bowl winner, the Baylor Bears.   Head Coach Dave Aranda changed the team around in his second season and went 12-1.  This season, he may have Blake Shapen as the starting QB.  And that raises some concern in the offense.  In the three starts, Shapen performed mediocre in the second half games against Kansas State, Texas Tech, and Oklahoma State.  Only three touchdowns in 6 quarters.  The offense did not stay on the field much as their opponents outscored the Bears.  Can the Bears improve in the second half?  Former starting QB Gerry Bohanon transferred to South Florida in the offseason.  I predict Baylor to finish 7-5 with Iowa State and Texas upsetting the Bears.  Number 9The Oklahoma Sooners have first year head coach Brent Venables.  He was hired after Lincoln Riley escaped to USC.  Venable is a defensive minded coach that can help improve the defense, which lacks coverage like the entire Big 12 conference.  Venable was part of the Clemson national championships and seeks to continue his awesome resume and lead the Sooners to the top.  There are two games to watch out for and that is at Nebraska and hosting Oklahoma State.  I predict the Sonners to finish 10-2.Number 8The Big Ten Champions, Michigan Wolverines return from the college football playoff loss hoping to repeat and head back there.  But they may find it hard to accomplish that task.  The Wolverines will host Penn State and Michigan State, back to back, and go on the road to their rivalry Ohio State.   I predict Michigan going 9-3.NUmber 7Utah UtesI do not have Utah in the top ten but many believe with so many caliber players returning this season, Utah can run the conference and win it, plus reach the college football playoffs.  Cameron Rising will be the starting QB  The Utes lost four games last season to BYU, San Diego State, Oregon State, and Ohio State.  Utah's season opener will be against SEC opponent Florida Gators.  It is hard to tell how well the team will finish with Head Coach Kyle Whittingham never to have a perfect season.  And in the PAC 12, in order to reach the playoffs, the teams need to finish perfect.  Utah Utes finish the season at best, 10-2.  Number 6Texas A&M AggiesThe Aggies finally defeated Alabama last season.  But, can they do it again?  That is a hard task especially when they are in the same division.  How can you reach the college football playoffs without playing a conference championship?  Only Notre Dame has done it as they are an independent conference.  Jimbo is entering his 5th season and many games in the SEC you have to watch out for.  But two in particular without the Alabama game you may want to watch closely, Mississippi State and Ole Miss.  The Aggies finished 10-2.Number 5Notre DameThe Irish have Marcus Freeman as the new head coach of the organization.  Freeman coached a loss in the Playstation Fiesta Bowl against Oklahoma State.  This season, the team will start by playing against the Ohio State Buckeyes.  They will also play Clemson and USC.  Tyler Buckner was named the starting quarterback over Drew Pyne.  This will be a tough task and the Irish are seeking to go back to back season to the college football playoffs. Being number 5 now is too high and I predict Notre Dame to finish 9-3.  Number 4Clemson TigersDabo Swinney is entering his 15th season.  He has an impressive total record with 150 wins, 36 losses.  Clemson has won 2 National Championships out of 4 appearances, all within the college football playoff format.  Despite having a turbulence, in and out of the field last season, the Tigers are set to make a comeback.  I am predicting a wild card or a Cinderella story on how the Tigers, who finished 10-3, QB DJ Uiagalelei having an underachieving season, bounce back to the finals and potentially have DJ winning the Heisman.  It can be that type of season with Clemson finishing undefeated.  Also, Number 3 GeorgiaKirby Smart and the Bulldogs are the defending national champions.   But there are questions concerning the team.  Majority of the starters have gone on to the NFL.  QB Stetson Bennett returns for his final year, and wonders if this is a rebuilding year or do the Bulldogs have enough talent to repeat.  I predict Georgia to finish undefeated and a rematch with Alabama in the SEC Championship.  Number 2 is no surprise, Ohio StateHead Coach Ryan Day is entering his fifth season with a 34-4 record, 23-1 in the Big Ten.  The Buckeyes fell short of the playoffs, losing to Michigan in the Big Ten Conference.  There are only two key games for Ohio State that I am looking at, and that is Notre Dame and Michigan.  Both games are home and I do not see the Buckeyes losing at home this season.  I predict Ohio State to finish the regular season 12-0.  And finally, number one, Alabama.  The Crimson Tide lost the national championship game to the Georgia Bulldogs.  Injuries prevented Alabama from repeating.  This season, it's all about revenge.  Nick Saban against his former assistance.  Should the Crimson Tide remain healthy all season long, and with the backup talent, they should redeem themselves against A&M and Georgia.  It does not look like any team in the SEC can defeat Alabama and therefore expect Alabama to be 12-0 and be the top team for the college football playoffs.  Two other college teams that the AP and Coaches Polls did not consider and should be the wild card teams this season, and they are the Texas Longhorns and Oregon Ducks.  In the next episode of All 4 Downs, I will make bold predictions on the national championship finals and Heisman Trophy winner.  This podcast is presented by CMGSports.  If you are wanting to start your own podcast, visit clovercrestmedia.com to get started.  Thankyou for watching All 4 Downs.  Please hit the subscribe button and leave a comment about the show.  I'm Ovi Muniz, on ALL 4 DOWNS.

As written by today's guest Scotty Swingler: Part of being a preacher is that I preach the Gospel which I've inherited, and not another Gospel. The Apostle Paul had very harsh words in his letters for those who'd preach “another Gospel.” While I may be the guy who came on your show in the spring and said that Gerry Bohanon should be Baylor's starting quarterback in 2022, I now must faithfully preach the Gospel I've inherited, not the Gospel I would've written. I mean, if I can be honest, had I been Jesus, I would've started John the Beloved over Peter at the quarterback position, known in Biblical times as “the rock upon which the Church will be built.” Advanced stats show that John possessed greater accuracy and patience in the pocket than Peter, while also seeing visions and remaining injury-free throughout his career. But Jesus started Peter, the high-ceiling sleeper pick from Galilee whose upside was just too great to deny despite his inconsistency and injury-prone nature. Jesus picked Peter, so that's what I preach; just like Dave picked Blake, and that is what I will now preach. Who's the reigning Big 12 Championship Game MVP? Blake Shapen. In only his second game as Baylor's starting quarterback, was the Most Valuable Player of the Big 12 Championship as selected by the media. Interesting. In both the NFL and CFB, the media is extremely biased towards a particular position group when it comes to major awards, do you know which position that is? Quarterback. In fact, since the Big 12's first season in 1996, a quarterback has won Offensive Player of the Year 17/26 years or 65% of the time. If you look at the winners since 2003, that percentage jumps to 74%! In 1999 the writers liked quarterbacks so much, they gave the award to TWO of them! So in total, 18 quarterbacks have won the award in 26 years. Who did the media pick to win the Big 12 in the preseason poll? That's right, Baylor. Interesting! So the media picks quarterbacks to win Player of the Year nearly 3⁄4 of the time over the last two decades, and that's most often the quarterback on the best team. Apologies to Bijon Robinson, it's just not happening this season. Texas has absolutely no shot. They're going to win 5-7 games as always. Frankly Texas probably SHOULD start Bijon at quarterback... it might turn out better for them than starting Quinn EW-ers, because you know, GROSS, but I digress. In Romans 10:14 Paul writes, “How will they believe if they have not heard?” In other words, how will someone know Jesus if a friend or a preacher doesn't talk about Jesus with them? The Bible of College Football clearly says in Charlie HeBrewer chapter 1, “How will he throw if he have not time?” Your quarterback can't do ANYTHING without the time to throw the ball, AKA, an offensive line. Who possesses the best Big 12 Offensive Line in 2022? Of course, it's Baylor. The Joe Moore semifinalist unit returns 4 of 5 starters and arguably improved at the 5th spot. Shapen is going to have time to put the ball downfield. Now, Blake Shapen is notably a two-sport athlete. Baylor had another notable two-sport athlete at the quarterback position in the not-so-distant past, can you think of who he was? This one's really tough so I'll give you a hint: He bears the same name as his father, AND his grandfather. Robert Griffin III. That's right! RG3 won the Big 12 in the 400 hurdles as a true freshman. So the last time Baylor had a two-sport superstar under center, he won a Heisman trophy. A Heisman! The last time Baylor had a starting quarterback whose name started with a “B” was when? 2014, when Bryce Petty won Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year and the Bears won the Big 12, a milestone they did not reach again until Blake Shapen won the Big 12 Championship MVP. I'm out here preaching the good news! Will you only believe?! Blake Shapen. 2022 Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year.  Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

It's mailbag time on Locked On Baylor as Drake and Cam tackle the toughest questions from the Big 12 surpassing the SEC and Big 12 to Blake Shapen winning another conference title for the Bears.  To start, it's very clear that the Big 12 is not equipped to ascend the ranks and become the best conference in sports. From the field to the bank account, the SEC and Big 10 have staked their claim on college ball.  However, the room for growth and expansion in the Big 12 is much higher than any other surviving league. The ceiling of the conference is so far above where the 12 teams currently stand, and Brett Yormark can rise to the occasion and turn the Big 12 into a powerhouse bunch.  Dialing into Baylor talk, Drake and Cam are both on board with Baylor vying for a Big 12 title again this season, and Blake Shapen won't need to be a hero to do so. Gerry Bohanon wasn't always going to win Baylor the game, but he seldom lost it for the Bears. Shapen will be just fine to fit that same mentality. A few outlets, including 247sports and CBS Sports, have released their national college quarterback rankings. Baylor football quarterback Blake Shapen is not too high on these lists. We dive into the rankings and where Shapen he falls in the national college football quarterback picture. Also, with the NBA Finals going on, we decided to turn back the clock for the players on the Warriors' and Celtics' rosters and debate which team would win if all of these guys were still in college. Would it be Duke's Jayson Tatum and Florida's Al Horford, a 2-time national champion, using their big-game experience to their advantage? Or would it be guys like Davidson's Stephen Curry and Arkansas' Moses Moody exploding on offense and taking Golden State to victory? Guest Andrew Miller, who covers the University of Texas for FanSided and USA Today, joins the show to share his thoughts on future Big 12 expansion, even after BYU, UCF, Cincinnati and Houston join the Big 12. Baylor football saw 11 guys find their way to the NFL this weekend, Jalen Pitre, Tyquan Thornton, JT Woods and Terrel Bernard leading the way. Following the best draft class in program history in just year two under Dave Aranda, John Garcia Jr. of Sports Illustrated joins to share how this will jolt Baylor's recruiting in the future. As a hotbed for NFL talent, and on the cusp of having four NFL offensive linemen next season, something is brewing in Waco. Outside of the draft and inside the walls of McLane, a quarterback battle has been settled. Blake Shapen has beat out Gerry Bohanon for the starting job. So, what does this mean for Baylor? John gives his thoughts on how dynamic and electric Shapen can be in the Baylor offense and even tackles the comparison between Shapen and Zach Wilson. John also gives favorable landing spots for Bohanon. And we round out today's show with a discussion about Matthew Mayer's future in basketball — a future that will be away from Baylor. The forward has entered the transfer portal, despite expecting to stay in the NBA draft process. Mayer's return to Baylor is nearly impossible now that Scott Drew and company have filled all available scholarships — that is, assuming Adam Flagler returns. Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! Blake Shapen was named the starting quarterback for Dave Aranda and the Baylor football team in 2022 — but is the third-year letterman all-conference caliber? From offensive line play to scheme under Jeff Grimes, Drake is joined by Cameron Stuart to analyze how high Shapen's ceiling is next season and if he can take over the Big 12 as the best quarterback in the league. He certainly has the potential to be a Zach Wilson-type for Grimes and company, but that's going to take a stellar performance from the entire staff and all personnel. It has also been released that Cincinnatti, BYU, Houston and UCF will enter the conference in 2023-2024. This means the Big 12 will harbor 14 teams for a couple of years if Texas and Oklahoma really stick around until 2025. What kind of intriguing matchups could this present and what new school is the most exciting to add? Drake and Cam break it all down. Lastly, there are a couple of new faces on Nicki Collen's squad next season as Dre Edwards of Kentucky and Jana Van Gytenbeek of Stanford are coming to Waco. The hosts give insight on what Baylor women's basketball is getting in these two athletes and how they could contribute right away. Blake Shapen will start for Dave Aranda and the Baylor Bears next season — meaning Gerry Bohanon transferring is inevitable. But Bohanon should go down as a Baylor hero, and Shapen is the right move to knight as QB. Will DJ Lagway land at Baylor to play for Dave Aranda and the Bears? John Garcia Jr. of Sports Illustrated says it's not impossible. From Robert Griffin III to Bryce Petty and Seth Russell, Baylor has had Heisman caliber quarterbacks — Lagway could be the next. The five-star quarterback is being recruited by schools like Alabama, Arkansas and Florida. What could get him to Baylor? Well, Aranda is certainly a great selling point — and Lagway's father is too.  John also takes listeners through Jadon Porter's commitment to Baylor and how explosive the young four-star can be in the Green and Gold. We also take a trip through Baylor's spring game… and every other team's spring game. Do those really matter for recruiting all that much? They can be the difference between a player committing or curving.  The show rounds out with Drake's analysis of Kilgore College commit Dantwan Grimes and what he adds to Scott Drew's basketball program for next season. Despite his ceiling and great potential, Drake makes the argument that Grimes will be hard-pressed to see the floor next season. The future is bright for the young point guard, but next year's team is too stacked to add another player into the rotation.  Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! Blake Shapen and Gerry Bohanon are in a classic battle to be the 2022 quarterback for Dave Aranda and the Baylor Bears football team — and Shapen outplayed Bohanon in the Green and Gold game. Now, so what? Does that even matter? It's such a small sample size, are you really going to base the next starter off of one scrimmage? Of course not, but we simply saw Shapen play better on Saturday. That needs to be accounted for. Travis Roeder of SicEm365 joins the show to help break down how the quarterback battle has progressed, how it was displayed Saturday and what other positions stood out to Travis at the spring game. From Monaray Baldwin to Ben Simms and plenty of guys in between, the team had a very, very good Green and Gold game. Travis goes in-depth on why. And an inciteful show would not be complete without a little fun with Michael Woodson, the head men's tennis coach at Baylor, joining to round out the day. Woodson breaks down his team's Big 12 championship victory over No. 1 TCU on Saturday and how it impacts the team's seeding in the postseason. The Baylor Bears are Big 12 Champions for a 3rd time in program history which now ties Baylor with 2nd most all-time. The Bears defeated the Oklahoma State Cowboys 21-16 in what was one of the best games of the weekend and of the season. For anyone worried about whether or not the new Big 12 could draw viewership, I think that has been put to bed. Travis starts this episode discussing how Baylor has taken over the Big 12. Never in the history of the conference has a University simultaneously held a Big 12 title in football, men's basketball, and women's basketball until now. The future is bright for Baylor in this conference. Then we dive into a recap of the Big 12 Championship game. We also talk about the defensive performance and how this could be Baylor's best defensive performance of all time. We all know how elite our defense can be when everything is clicking and we saw that this past weekend. The Bears intercepted Spencer Sanders 4 times while only allowing 70 yards rushing on 40 carries. Travis was confident a Blake Shapen led team could win the Big 12, so bear with him while he toots his own horn. Shapen started the game with 17 straight completions, an FBS record this year, and at one point had more TD's than he did incompletions. Travis then gives his thoughts on a few specific plays throughout the game. The 4th and 1 which the Bears did not convert and of course "The McPlay", the amazing play made by former walk on Jairon McVea to win Baylor the title game.  Finally, Please Bear with Me is joined by former Baylor linebacker, Big 12 Champion, and All-Big 12 performer Eddie Lackey. Eddie talks about the anniversary of winning Baylor's first Big 12 title in the ice fog game vs Texas in 2013. He recalls the feeling of running out on the field and how great the atmosphere was in Floyd Casey given the weather. He also breaks down "The McPlay" and describes how difficult it is to make a play like that; plus much more! This game is a fun one to revisit so listen in as Travis and Eddie take you through it. S5E15 - A BUTT Bowl for 10 Wins!

The Baylor Bears are 1 win away from a 10 win season after dominating the Kansas State Wildcats. The final score of 20-10 does not tell the full story of this one. Aside from one 65 yard run the Bears didn't give the Wildcats any room to breathe. Travis opens this episode talking about the potential of Baylor making a 2nd Big 12 Championship appearance in 3 years. There were several different scenarios that could have landed the Bears in the Conference Championship, but now we have a clear cut answer. Beat Tech and hope the Pokes pull it out against the Sooners. Gerry Bohanon went down with a hamstring injury in the closing minutes of the 1st half, but redshirt Freshman QB Blake Shapen stepped in beautifully leading the Bears to a FG before half and crushing the Wildcat's momentum. Travis updates us on Bohanon's injury and compares and contrasts the strengths and weaknesses between the two QB's. Travis believes Shapen can lead us to a Big 12 Championship if given the chance. We then break down what made the win over a very good Kansas State so dominant. They've flown under the radar this year, but had they won they would have had the same record as the Bears. As we know now, that didn't happen, and the advanced statistics tell a different story than the final score. Next we'll preview the BUTT bowl as the Bears have an excellent opportunity to reach 10 wins on the season on Senior day in Waco. We could see a few QB's play for Tech, but Travis believes the defensive game plan should stay fairly similar regardless of who is under center for the Red Raiders. Finally Travis wraps up this episode with what Jalen Pitre, "The One Who Stayed", has meant to Baylor University. Also his thoughts on this special group of Seniors who decided to stick around when Aranda came to town, and we can't thank them enough.
