Hey all, it's episode 200 Mostly I'm happy every day to wake up and look at motorcycles, work with motorcycles, talk to people about motorcycles, and hell - if I'm lucky enough- RIDE motorcycles! So numbers aren't much of a thing to me. Birthdays were never a huge part of my family's upbringing. Nor were anniversaries of any sort. Birthdays, years at a job, months being sober... there were never any "Big Ones". Partially because you never knew if you were going to be dead tomorrow, which meant that your last celebration was technically the 'Big One", so they didn't bother counting. At any rate, I don't feel a particular reason that we need to commemorate this show, but we will try. Here is to 200 episodes of complete Bu11$h*t!! We thank you for spending them with us as we tried to lock down segments like "Roast My Bike", "W.F.O. headlines", Instagram Shoutouts, various challenges, and mostly - Spooky Spokes and Solstice Slam. There are others that have come and gone. I'm sure there will be more! Thanks Moto1, or Patreon supporters, MPC riders and everyone who sends us little messages and topics here and there over the last 200 shows. This show is brought to you with generous support from listeners like you! If you are interested in supporting the show, head over to patreon.com/creativeriding 1. Let's get a few things out of the way. Here are some news snippets including Arlen Ness' passing, Utah is legal to lane split, and I went to a motoshow over the weekend. 2. Social Media - Thanks to the abundant rains, recently there was a "super bloom" of wild flowers in California - some of them our protected state flower, the California Golden Poppy. The blooms drew thousands of sightseers to the wilderness, but not to enjoy the flowers... Instead, thanks to social media like Instagram and features like Geo Tagging, throngs of humans trampled, sat on, and otherwise flattened the orange flowers to get the perfect Social Media post. Park rangers worked over time to keep people on the trails, but were ignored and outnumbered as people waded into the flora to snap pics. This brings up issues that moto riders face as well. What happens when your favorite spot or ride destination gets poached by riders looking for that perfect pic? We also talk about why so many offroaders show their location as "Your Mom's House". 3.Crashes - Jae talks about her recent hit-and-run and why she couldn't avoid it. She also got popped by the cops for something, and Utah riders need to pay attention. 4. Chris Wiggins brings us American Flat Track racing news from the Daytona TT and ATL Short Track events. He pronounces all the names wrong and breaks out into all the tangents. Learn about the Hooligan struggle and, why is the man always out to keep the Hooligan down? 5. For the last 2 minutes we announce the Winners of the Solstice Slam!!! Congrats to all who entered. Your prizes will go out this weekend. Happy Friday! Welcome to Episode 166 of the creative riding motorcycle podcast. Racing and Show season is upon us, as Daytona Bike Week kicks off this week, signaling an official start to the motorcycling year of non-MX and SX racing (Which has been going on for a while). The start of this year's season has sparked controversy among several race series. Riders are trying to onboard new sponsors to the Series' dismay. Find out why. The 1990s. For all the good and bad that happened in that decade, we don't want to relive it. There were some icons of the 90s that were in the news this week however, and we'll discuss that briefly. Is it hipster? Is it green? Is it both? We talk about bikes and touch on the question "What is 'green'"? We'll definitely explore that and other issues in future episodes as we get more information. Quick intro topics i.Euro 5 coming next year - “Air-cooled engines are inevitably threatened each time there’s a new bout of emissions regulations, and Euro 5 is no different” ii. I reported last week that BRP snatched up Faster Faster Inc.assets. A&R put it best, “ For Alta Motors, this surely signals the end of the road for the startup company, as it seems unlikely that an investor would choose to restart the brand without having access to its key technology components and talented staff. RIP Alta.” iii Romano Fenati back to race w/Marinelli Snipers iv. WSSP300 2. ASK WIGGS deep dive from Jason Gulmire via Facebook --“Got a question for ask Wiggs. I’ve been going to Flat Out Friday for the last 3 years. Over those three years the hooligan class has evolved. They went from stock bikes that you could tell someone just did a few mods for racing, to purpose built race bikes. At least that’s how they look from the stands. Are there rules in place to help keep costs down for people? If not, is there talk about doing so? It’s the nature of the beast when it comes to racing. Things always evolve into monsters when their [sic] not kept in check. And even when there are rules in place, the really ambitious find ways around them. Hopefully I’ll here [sic] your answer on the show!” - “We should do a 4 way show with me and Singsime about racing costs. I came from the bracket racing scene and just started to heads up race recently. Bracket racing it doesnt matter how much you spend….. In theory. Lol. But often times it’s not the person who spends the most is the one who wins.” -- Jason G 3. Crash stories inspiration for Solstice Slam. a.Jarvish Helmets. Gear. Technology b. SMRC follow up from last episode - The Safer Motorcycling Research Consortium (SMRC) was incorporated in 2019 as an industry-led non-profit organization composed of motorcycle manufacturers, suppliers, research organizations, and other relevant stakeholders with a focus on advancing on-road motorcyclist safety. Objectives: As an OEM oriented organization, cooperate on pre-competitive research focusing on: The integration of motorcycling into the modern transportation ecosystem. Enhancing and improving infrastructure and operations to advance traffic safety and protect the motorcycle rider and passenger. Improving Human Factor elements that affect motorcyclist safety. c. GLOSA New Audi tech (that might be shared with Ducati as part of the C-V2X system that they announced at CES) lets you ‘ride the green wave’ reducing red lights and hopefully the need to split/share lanes and possible rear-endings (that’s what she said) 3. 3 questions - Question cards and close show Solstice Slam IV episode will air 3/22. This week Wiggins and i are out to dinner. Specials thanks to all of our Patreon supporters! On this episode I'd like to thank all of the support, from Patrons to Global Listeners and all of the MPC admin. Most of all, Mrs. Creative Riding for helping out with the challenge this year. It's the end of the first week of the MPC 2018 and we're roaring into week two with all guns blazing. There are some stats and hopefully stories to follow. GMG: You know what really Grinds my Geeres? I'll tell ya... -C.A.R.B. ruins motorcycles (and fun), and now they're ruining something the entire population is familiar with. Did you know that emissions regulations don't just apply to tailpipes and air quality? -Trump bashes Harley-Davidson for opening overseas operations. Right now I can tell you that I was way off on my numbers. The Steel & Aluminum tariffs will cost them $20 million USD, with European retaliatory tariffs possibly costing an additional $45 million. It's as if he's saying, "Make your products here, but let me tariff the shit out of your raw materials". He did say that Harley-Davidson's motorcycles should never be made outside the country EVER. Meanwhile, Taiwan's Foxconn was welcomed to Wisconsin with open arms, with Trump encouraging other nations to make their goods here; outside of their countries.... -Digital License Plates. California announces plans to use a new digital license plate. Sacramento, the state capitol, will lead the charge, fitting the plates to a small fleet of vehicles. At a cost of nearly $700, the plates use similar technology to an Amazon Kindle screen. The plates are controlled remotely via wi-fi and can display personalized messages. They can also be tracked and your information probably harvested via people with the technology and know-how. Big Brother under the guise of "Convenient Techy Coolness" anyone? Wiggins and I had a chance to grab a letter for the challenge and then go out to dinner afterward. You get to sit in like a gagged hostage - able to listen yet unable to contribute - while we carry on our weekly banter about motorcycles and what we know about them. This week's show also features the Solstice Slam winners for the third annual submission show. There's also a video on our facebook and Patreon page. Scooters, Classics, Antiques, Long Range Rides, Carver's climb. We've got that and more in this episode of Creative Riding. Episode 124: Ten Year Bikes The main topic of today's show revolves around bikes that have persisted, for one reason or another, for the better part of a decade. Almost completely unchanged save for color or decals, we talk about the pros and cons of these long-running production staples. Before we get to all that: Intro: Check out Chris' knife making endeavor on Instagram at field_initiative_knives. We open the show with a little cutlery talk. Solstice Slam: Don't for get- the cut-off is the end of this month! June 1st will be the Solstice Slam episode, so don't delay in submitting your stories, artwork, etc. to the Slam's email: slam@creative-riding.com $5 and up Patreon supporters will automatically be entered for a chance to win a prize without even submitting a piece of content. Junk shows you how to record a 4 minute long piece as he re-tells the story of Friday, May 4th... Oil Day. Junk was out this weekend for The Californian. A couple of weeks ago Brady Walker, founder/producer of the Californian was on the show, and it was everything that he guaranteed... and more! This event is basically a SoCal version of the Quail Gathering, and thus, so many classic and vintage bikes were on display. Many of them were machines from the early days of off-road, flat track, and road racing legend; a bygone era of simpler, yet more richly crafted motorcycles. find out more info at www.thecalifornian.us Junk also made his way out to the slightly more clandestine Killer Super Sunday. It happened to be the 10th year of the event. There were hundreds (if not a thousand) smaller displacement bikes and scooters taking the streets of L.A. by storm. An enormous train of 50cc-300cc bikes made their way from Pasadena all the way to Woodland Hills via the city streets. There were bigger bikes and scoots along for the ride as well (like 650 Burgmans and Sport Bikes that were 600cc and up) but the majority were scooters and Groms. Spamela fit in nicely. Finally we talk about 10 year bikes: DR-Z400, Concours14, F800 GS, S40 (formerly Savage), KLR650, etc. These bikes are both slammed and praised by the biking community. Are they a hold-out to the newer, "safer" technology that should be on every bike, or a savior when it comes to being able to find parts for a bike that was not just a 2 year model? We cover all the pros and cons. Racing: we get out of this week's show talking about Flat Track from Texas. Carver has shown that he is a man on the move. It was just last year that we talked to him after his Victory at the Texas 1/2 mile. This year he came in 2nd. He's definitely a man to watch out for. News: I ask Wiggins one question about Ford news... he guides us off the beaten path and we squirrel hole into a whirlwind of cheap scoots, outsourced manufacturing, Walmart, China, Rusty Butcher handmade goods, Japan, Harley Davidson, Nixon, and a whole bunch of other stuff. Hello there. Welcome to episode 120! Aptly named... uh, 120. On this episode Wiggins is back in the studio. Thanks to Atlantis Motor Garage for hosting and J Diggs from Diggs & Ghost for sitting in with us last week. On this week's show we get back to basics and talk shop in the garage. 1. We get an update on Wiggins' wrist injury ahead of the RammingSpeed track day at Willow Springs, and the Hippy Killer Hoedown round of the RSD SHNC. He had a fridge watch on over his cast... lol. 2. There is a little show lowdown from Bri Viffer, legendary field producer and team Creative Riding rider for the Motorcycle Podcaster's Challenge. He went to the MotoNowhere Show and sums it up for us. We talk about some bikes and the hooligans that have been hitting the dirt and tarmac on H-Ds as of late. You get a little behind the scenes on what is happening in the life of our resident hooligan. 3. We end the show with racing. AFT saw round two go down in Atlanta and the results were surprising again. There's some MotoGP too! send general questions to askwiggz@gmail.com send stories for Solstice Slam to slam@creative-riding.com tune in the the Motorcycle Podcaster's Challenge podcast and Facebook page, and stay tuned for WIR Top 10 news!!

Welcome to episode 75 I had a hard time staying on task with this show after learning of Nicky Hayden's tragic bicycle accident in Italy. Thousands of fans and peers are showing support and sending well wishes to the Kentucky Kid, who at this time is recovering in an Italian hospital. The whole tone of the show was overshadowed by this tragedy, but i hope that through my non-sensical ramblings that I have kept you entertained and maybe even made you smile for a second. The news really took the wind out of my sails, and I have postponed some of the material for this episode until a later date. Fingers crossed for Nicky Hayden and his family. Many people are showing their support via social media with the hashtag #GoNicky. Other things talked about on the show: WIR's Top 10 Bikes face off for round 2 this weekend at WIR. The Hooligan Dirt Dash coincides with the ROT this weekend. The AFT pros line up in Sacramento this weekend for what promises to be a showdown for the books. Welcome to Episode 69! On this Episode we explore several choices. Some are bad choices, like choosing to spend time with your family instead of riding your motorcycle or going to bike events. One choice is who to commemorate this episode with: Nicky Hayden or Danny Eslick? Both road racers are also excellent flat trackers. The choices that some of the bikers in our third segment made may shock you. Like the choice to crash into Cops... in Texas. And finally, you'll find out the judges' choice for Solstice Slam winner! Hey everyone, it's episode 62! We have to start out talking about the rain. When I was a kid (and even in to adulthood) I have been told time and time again that California is going to separate from the mainland and become an island. Or worse yet- sink. There is a crappy country song about it, and there's even a Tool song about it. It was supposed to happen because of "the big one". An earthquake along the San Andreas fault line, so powerful, that it rips Cali off the map. Well, turns out Cali might slip off the map after all, but not because of some mega-quake. Instead, the long-running drought might have more to do with the land leaving the hillsides and running out to the sea one grain at a time. Many places across the state are suffering land slides. In the Santa Cruz mountains roads are literally falling down cliff sides, and in the Central Coast areas there is flooding similar to what the midwestern plains suffer on a regular basis. I won't complain too much, because I know that the weather has taken a turn for the nasty all across the USA this week in general. Don't forget to submit an entry to the Solstice Slam this year. Entries are due before March 24th, and there is a special giveaway to accompany the top three entrants. Johnny J and the Flatfoot Floogies have donated 3 special colored vinyl records (includes a digital download for you non-hipsters) to promote their upcoming show that nearly coincides with the Solstice Slam. The top spot will enjoy a special edition vinyl and a few extras that I'm personally throwing in to sweeten the pot. May include pocket lint, a sticker, and a drawing of my pet. Submit your entries no later than Mar. 23rd to: creativeridingpodcast@gmail.com Would you like to build a bike this year? I would certainly like to get my buns in gear and get my bike projects locked down on a doable timeline. In order to start building, you must take the first step: buy a cheap bike and hack it up! If you need information or inspiration for your build, we cover some popular and not so popular bike blogs that will help you decide what bike might be best for you, and ultimately show you that your mind is the limit. I'll include some links to resources at the end of the post. With Valentine's Day right around the corner, you should really get buyin' that present that your significant other will love. Check out Daily Bikers for that special gift that truly says "BRRRAAAAP" in your sweetheart's ear. https://www.dailybikersstore.com Lastly, let's wrap up the show with an article that I wrote for the blog. The Solstice Slam was my impetus to do a little spring cleaning. After getting a few fresh responses and gearing up for the spring and summer myself, I decided that it was time to clear out the inbox, wipe the white boards clean, and scratch off a few notes whose ideas are never going to see the light of day, or that can be set on the back burner while I flesh them out. This episode is just an audio recorder of me cleaning out my inbox and straightening my desk up basically. There were a few thing that caught my eye and required a more profound investigation. A few of them are listed below. First and foremost is Dan Michael. Dan’s motorcycle blog and artwork can be found here: http://dailybikers.com https://www.etsy.com/au/shop/DailyBikers/?pages=2 The hot debate and outrage over ethanol in fuel may not be all it’s cracked up to be if you live in a warm climate where your bike doesn’t have to sit over the winter. Our news girl Honee Bunzz is on hiatus, so there is no news in this episode, but I'll try to talk about a few recurring topics from this week to keep you abreast. We interview artist, designer, and motorcyclist Mark Dugally. I first met Mark at the IMS Long Beach in 2010. Happy end of Bike Week to all of those who went last weekend, and to all of those that may still be incarcerated and waiting to leave the Daytona Beach area this weekend. Hello all! Sorry this episode is so late being delivered. I felt like utter shit. I started the recording not feeling that bad due to the help of some medication, but things quickly went south. Then I went out of town for the weekend. I took my podcasting gear with me in hopes of getting the show out still, but I literally went to a barn raising. The manual labor wiped me out since I was already not feeling well, and I was asleep before the local hipsters even got ready to go out for the night. I started recording this episode Thursday, when it was sunny and 80 degrees. Today was Monday and it poured, and it included some thunder and lightning. So, for what it’s worth, my sincerest apologies. Tire swappin’: Playing with tires is a little bit like playing with your lover: You need to get them warmed up before hand. Always use a little lube and a little protection. Do a bit of prying and pulling in all the right places, and Voila!!-mutual satisfaction and smiles all around. Or you can go in like a sado-masochist- cold rubbber intertwined with a bunch of random metal. No protection, no lube. Scratching like a feral cat. Getting beat by and beating on smelly black rubber. Two sweaty hours of screaming and frustration later, you will have achieved the same results, but like BDSM, you both may be sore for a while after. How to remove tire (poor man’s bead breaking. spoons, irons, zip ties) How to mount & balance tire Replacing wheel bearings • Use tire spoon to remove seals • Heat hub if you can to expand it if necessary to get bearings out. • Tap bearing out with a punch, working your way around it so that it doesn’t go sideways in the hub. • Sometimes you may have to move the spacer in the hub if it’s exactly that same size as the bearing. • Put the new bearings in with a seal/bearing driver set (one of the only things that’s ok to buy at Harbor Freight). Heat the hub again if necessary, and you can also use the old bearings, a matching socket, or a matching piece of PVC pipe to drive the bearings home. • Put water resistant grease and install the new seal. Honee’s News! Honee delivers her special brand of industry news and perspective. It sounds like she was recording in a child factory, or a factory run by children… Honee? You got some splainin’ to do! Miscellanious thoughts: I’ve got my own crappy opinion about the EPA’s re-wording of the clean air act (first heard by us on the 2E Podcast). Apparently the EPA is targeting any plated vehicle in their new legislation. It won’t matter if you’re at a racetrack, a tradeshow, or a local swapmeet… according to the guys at Two Enthusiasts, you will be cited if your exhaust is not the factory emissions-compliant unit . I also talk about Victory Motorcycles, and why I think they didn’t make a move to acquire Buell. Parent company Polaris is busy setting their sights on Buell’s former lanista , Harley-Davidson. Thanks to it’s collaboration with Roland Sands, Polaris (indian specifically) has blown the doors open on the Hooligan racing class, and as a result, Indian has successfully entered the AMA twins class for 2016. Along with the success of the Indian brand with the new Scout and Scout Sixty, the Victory Octane and Ignition are generating interest alongside their stable mates, the Project 156 and Victory Empulse electric bike. Movie Review: Glory Stompers – 1967. Dennis Hopper (-R.I.P. One of the greats) This movie stinks! Well, sorry for being late, and sorry for every noise my clogged, congested head and mouth made on the microphone. Thanks to El Niño for that! Don’t forget the Solstice Slam.
