As the 2024 riding season winds down, Neil and ADVrider managing editor Zac Kurylyk meet up to talk about the different bikes they rode this summer (new and old), including Zac's time on the new Royal Enfield Himalyan 450. He thinks it's stiff competition for the KLR650 and DR650.

Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day

Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for June 10, 2024 is: tractable • TRAK-tuh-bul • adjective Tractable is used to describe someone or something that is easily led, managed, taught, or controlled. // This new approach should make the problem more tractable. // The horse's tractable temperament made her especially popular with new riders. See the entry > Examples: “… Kawasaki's popular KLR650 … only makes about 40 horsepower, yet it has launched untold numbers of epic rides due to its reliable, tractable and manageable output.” — William Roberson, Forbes, 30 Sept. 2022 Did you know? A frequentative is a form of a verb that indicates repeated action. The frequentative of the word sniff, for example, is sniffle, meaning “to sniff repeatedly.” Some English words come from a frequentative in another language, and tractable is one. Tractable, meaning “easily led or managed,” comes from the Latin adjective tractabilis, which in turn comes from the verb tractare, which has various meanings including “to drag about,” “to handle,” “to deal with,” and “to treat.” Not to drag on too much about Latin, but tractare is the frequentative of another Latin verb, trahere, meaning “to drag or pull.” Now, one can pull or tug a draft animal on a lead, for example, whether or not that animal is willing or compliant. But if one can pull, handle, or otherwise deal with that animal repeatedly or continuously with ease (by treating it well, we presume)? Well, you can see where this is leading—in English we would call our helpful animal friend tractable. Speaking of farms, despite its resemblance, tractor did not pass through the frequentative tractare but it does come from trahere.

In this week's first segment, Editor Don Williams takes us through the new 2023 Kawasaki KLR650 S. This simple machine has been around—in various iterations—for over 30 years, and could arguably be called the “original” ADV bike. Of course it has its pluses and a couple of minuses too, depending on what you use it for. This new S model has a reduced seat height which will certainly appeal to many riders. Don takes us through everything this new version of the venerable KLR does well, and not so well.   In the second segment, Associate Editor Teejay Adams chats with Maddi Patterson (Insta @maddi_paddy). Maddi started out as an umbrella girl on the MotoGP grid. But, there's a lot more to Maddi than just good looks. She's bright, articulate, and a really good creative writer. Ultimately, she's managed to parlay those talents into becoming a journalist. Maddi's driving force is helping others, and she's done everything from adopting a donkey, mentoring young up and coming racers, and advocating for rider safety. Significantly, she and her husband raised money for Ukraine and made several trips to the war zone carrying in much needed medical supplies. There's a lot to be admired about Maddi Patterson, including her survival from a life-changing accident. So from all of us here at Ultimate Motorcycling—we hope you enjoy this episode.   Racing for Ukraine We love your feedback! Or, is it Liza's vote, the KTM 690 Enduro? What do you think? With so many new bike announcements, it prompts us to share some opinions about if we care or not about these news articles? The conversation then turns into a History Hole about Bimoto, a little known boutique performance brand that makes some amazing bikes. Then we play a game called Separated at Birth. Liza prompts that all bikes have a car that is the equivalent. Do you think we matched them well? And lastly we read listener emails and answer some questions. This also leads to a conversation about the amazing deals you can get when buying a used bike in the 3-4k range. Scooters, Classics, Antiques, Long Range Rides, Carver's climb. We've got that and more in this episode of Creative Riding. Episode 124: Ten Year Bikes The main topic of today's show revolves around bikes that have persisted, for one reason or another, for the better part of a decade. Almost completely unchanged save for color or decals, we talk about the pros and cons of these long-running production staples. Before we get to all that: Intro: Check out Chris' knife making endeavor on Instagram at field_initiative_knives. We open the show with a little cutlery talk. Solstice Slam: Don't for get- the cut-off is the end of this month! June 1st will be the Solstice Slam episode, so don't delay in submitting your stories, artwork, etc. to the Slam's email: slam@creative-riding.com $5 and up Patreon supporters will automatically be entered for a chance to win a prize without even submitting a piece of content. Junk shows you how to record a 4 minute long piece as he re-tells the story of Friday, May 4th... Oil Day. Junk was out this weekend for The Californian. A couple of weeks ago Brady Walker, founder/producer of the Californian was on the show, and it was everything that he guaranteed... and more! This event is basically a SoCal version of the Quail Gathering, and thus, so many classic and vintage bikes were on display. Many of them were machines from the early days of off-road, flat track, and road racing legend; a bygone era of simpler, yet more richly crafted motorcycles. find out more info at www.thecalifornian.us Junk also made his way out to the slightly more clandestine Killer Super Sunday. It happened to be the 10th year of the event. There were hundreds (if not a thousand) smaller displacement bikes and scooters taking the streets of L.A. by storm. An enormous train of 50cc-300cc bikes made their way from Pasadena all the way to Woodland Hills via the city streets. There were bigger bikes and scoots along for the ride as well (like 650 Burgmans and Sport Bikes that were 600cc and up) but the majority were scooters and Groms. Spamela fit in nicely. Finally we talk about 10 year bikes: DR-Z400, Concours14, F800 GS, S40 (formerly Savage), KLR650, etc. These bikes are both slammed and praised by the biking community. Are they a hold-out to the newer, "safer" technology that should be on every bike, or a savior when it comes to being able to find parts for a bike that was not just a 2 year model? We cover all the pros and cons. Racing: we get out of this week's show talking about Flat Track from Texas. Carver has shown that he is a man on the move. It was just last year that we talked to him after his Victory at the Texas 1/2 mile. This year he came in 2nd. He's definitely a man to watch out for. Dave & Becky Prigel: KLR 650 Rider A motorcycle off or accident is something that no one really wants to talk about, but if you're a motorcycle rider, a pillion, or someone emotionally attached to a rider, we think about it now and again. And in this episode we address dealing with accidents, recovery and getting back on the bike. Last year, Dave Prigel, an ARR listener, contacted us when he decided to get back in to riding after many years of being off a motorcycle, and he purchased a KLR 650. Just months later, he was in an accident which resulted in broken bones. He's nicely recovering now, and wants to get back on and ride, but his wife, Becky, isn't so sure about it. Becky is a nurse and has experience with treating motorcycle accident related injuries in her job, so she has concerns about Dave riding again. We talk to both Dave and Becky and get their views on what can be a touchy subject when a loved one gets in an accident. Andrea Brosnan - Mongolia Motorcycle Crash & Overcoming Language Barriers Andrea Brosnan has always been passionate about travel, but she is fairly new to adventure motorcycle riding. Last year, her husband went on a motorcycle trip from London to Magidan. The plan was for Andrea to meet him and ride with him for 10 days, but near the end of her trip they had a motorcycle collision, where Andrea ran in to David. The accident left Andrea with multiple injuries, and numerous difficulties with language communication with hospital staff and doctors. Andrea is back in Australia, still recovering from her injuries. She shares her story on having an accident in a foreign country and the problems they had to overcome to get her the help she needed and to get her back home. Liz Jansen - Motorcycle Crash Recovery Liz Jansen is a well known motorcycle enthusiast and is the author of Women, Motorcycles and the Road to Empowerment and Life Lessons from Motorcycles. She’s also a Senior Instructor in the Motorcycle Program at Humber College in Toronto, as well as a motorcycle adventurer. She’s been riding since she was a teenager, and has done a lot of solo touring around Canada and the United States. In 2014, after 45 years of riding, she had a motorcycle crash. And through this experience, even with hundreds of thousands of miles spent on the road and being an instructor, she faced for the first time her own challenges about riding a motorcycle after an accident. She shares her story and some great tips for dealing with crashes and recovery. When an Afternoon Ride Turns in to a Rescue Mission This is the story of a rescue made possible by a satellite communicator, an inReach device. We've used the inReach for some time now, but only have experience with it as a convenient method of staying in contact with family and for checking weather in remote locations. When we were putting together this episode, part of the plan was to talk to someone who had to use their inReach for the purpose of rescue. And while searching for someone with a story, we experienced a rescue mission of our own.  Jim Martin, show host, and his friend Brent Henry, went for an afternoon adventure ride, on the logging roads and trails on our island. That ride turned out to involve a serious injury and the subsequent rescue mission. About inReach: We talked at length about both the inReach and Spot on a previous episode, Calling From Help from Above.  inReach Canada: www.inreachcanada.comDelorme inReach: http://www.inreachdelorme.com/ Spencer James Conway - Circumnavigating South America Spencer was the first solo rider to circumnavigate Africa, totally unsupported. He documented his trip using a video camera and at the time had no idea that it would be made in to a six part series called African Motorcycle Diaries where it first aired on the UK Travel Channel. And now, Spencer is riding around South America, documenting his trip on video, which will once again be made in to a series on the Travel Channel. Jim caught up with him on his trip to see how things were playing out.
