Welcome back to All One Song. We're spending the spring of 2026 talking to some great musicians, writers and artists about their one favorite Neil Young song. But even if the concept is simple, one thing is for sure: these conversations go all over the place, kind of like a long Old Black solo on “Like Hurricane.” And that's how it should be, right?  Now, host Tyler Wilcox has been contributing to Aquarium Drunkard for well over a decade now, serving as the site's resident Neil Young aficionado. But he's got competition! Scott Bunn is one of AD's excellent writers, and his Shakey knowledge is extensive.  Over on his Recliner Notes blog, Scott has written a bunch of perceptive and insightful essays that dig into the undiscovered corners of Neil's catalog. Go over to ReclinerNotes.com.   For his All One Song appearance, Scott picked a truly deep cut: “Boom Boom Boom.” This is a song that you might know better … though not much better…as “She's A Healer,” which closed out Neil's 2002 LP Are You Passionate?, recorded with Booker T and the MG's. But “Boom Boom Boom” is the original Crazy Horse version of the song, which was cut in the year 2000. It collected dust (or rust?) in the vaults for more than two decades, but eventually showed up as a highlight of Toast, the legendary lost Neil and Crazy Horse album that was finally released in 2022. It's all a little confusing … and hopefully our conversation doesn't muddy the waters even further.  But “Boom Boom Boom” is a good reminder that there are so many different and diverse eras of Neil's career; some may be more fruitful and enjoyable than others, but the journey itself is the point. As we look back over 60-plus years of output, it's a blast to put the pieces of the puzzle together, to see what weird pictures emerge.

Prayer is a vital part of our Christian life. We communicate with our Heavenly Father and seek His wisdom, guidance, and direction. Jesus' disciples traveled with Him for three years. They listened to His teachings, witnessed His miracles, and heard Him pray. Many times, He would go off to pray in the evening or early morning hours. In today's lesson, the disciples ask Jesus to teach them how to pray. He responds with the prayer we often call The Lord's Prayer (Matthew 6:9-15) or The Disciples' Prayer (Luke 11:2-4). This prayer is the example or model Jesus gave to His disciples. One day, Jesus was praying in a certain place. When He finished, one of his disciples said to Him, “Lord, teach us to pray, just as John taught his disciples.”He said to them, “When you pray, say: ‘Father, hallowed be Your name.'” Luke 11:1-2 God's "name" reflects His nature. Jesus called God His Father. We also call Him our Heavenly Father to give Him glory and praise. Today I compare and contrast actual Japanese National Socialism to Japanese ultranationalism by looking at the life and work of Motoyuki Takabatake. Then, I look at the Shōwa Research Association and the Imperial Rule Assistance Association, both of which studied socialism in order to integrate and subvert it. Then I go through Masao Maruyama's framework for fascist development in Japan. After that, I go through the life of Sōgen Ōmori whose life puts on full display several of the themes I've been tracing throughout the Imperial Japan series. Finally, I conclude with a few interesting facts I learned about Toyama and the Black Dragon Society at the end of my research - things which tie into sexpionage honeypot type operations. The biggest names in Hollywood and Broadway recorded for AFRS during the war years, The American Forces Network can trace its origins back to May 26, 1942, when the War Department established the Armed Forces Radio Service (AFRS). The U.S. Army began broadcasting from London during World War II, using equipment and studio facilities borrowed from the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC). The first transmission to U.S. troops began at 5:45 p.m. on July 4, 1943, and included less than five hours of recorded shows, a BBC news and sports broadcast. That day, Corporal Syl Binkin became the first U.S. Military broadcasters heard over the air. The signal was sent from London via telephone lines to five regional transmitters to reach U.S. troops in the United Kingdom as they prepared for the inevitable invasion of Nazi-occupied Europe. Fearing competition for civilian audiences the BBC initially tried to impose restrictions on AFN broadcasts within Britain (transmissions were only allowed from American Bases outside London and were limited to 50 watts of transmission power) and a minimum quota of British produced programming had to be carried. Nevertheless AFN programmes were widely enjoyed by the British civilian listeners who could receive them and once AFN operations transferred to continental Europe (shortly after D-Day) AFN were able to broadcast with little restriction with programmes available to civilian audiences across most of Europe (including Britain) after dark. As D-Day approached, the network joined with the BBC and the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation to develop programs especially for the Allied Expeditionary Forces. Mobile stations, complete with personnel, broadcasting equipment, and a record library were deployed to broadcast music and news to troops in the field.
