A Medway mum has spoken about the moment her baby was rushed to hospital after struggling to breathe - only to find out she had a birthmark growing in her throat. Sophie Collins has been chatting to reporter Alex Langridge about the incredibly rare condition. And, a Kent school is hoping to open a visitor centre so more of us can visit their wartime tunnels. In the upcoming period, every second Friday, Perdu will be broadcasting excerpts of around fifteen minutes, taken from our archives of our most thought-provoking, lingering evening programs. In this edition, you’ll be hearing a reading by Sophie Collins from the first evening in the series Belonging in the Mess, which took place on the 18th of May 2018 and was titled A world we lose by waking up in sanity. The evening approached the topic of mental health from an open perspective, looking at the way that patterns of affects that are usually labelled as abnormal can provide us with fruitful perspectives on the world that they emerged from. On this evening, Sophie Collins spoke about the affect of shame and its interwovenness with topics like self-help, trauma and self-expression. A trigger warning for this episode: Sophie Collins discusses sexual assault.

Have you noticed that when a few dogs are walking or playing together, if one pees or marks a spot outside, than the other dogs will come over and mark the same spot? Why do dogs do this? I’ll explain how this is serious business in the canine world. Next, talking to dog trainer, Katie-K-9 about dog crates, find out the answers to what the best kind of crate to get is, wire or plastic, what you can do to help your dog enjoy their time in the crate, and how to know when it’s time for the dog to be left out of the crate at home alone. If you live with multiple cats and have had one cat suddenly become aggressive with or bully another cat, there are two surprising causes you’ll want to know about. One type of aggression has to with the cat who had simply been sitting and looking out the window and the other may happen when one cat comes home from the vet. I’ll explain the reasons these things can provoke aggression and how to fix it. Let us know what you think about the podcast or the blog articles. The 'feel' of another language and the impact of its sound is hard to convey in translation. Are there ways to be more faithful to the visceral experience of a prose piece or a poem? Or should we be questioning the idea that a translator can or should be faithful? Rowan Williams discusses the 'verbal spring' of the iconic Welsh bard Taliesin and the work attributed to him, novelist Adam Thirlwell and Palestinian writer Adania Shibli explore the pleasures and possibilities of simultaneous translation and performance, and Sophie Collins shares her experience of translating (from the Dutch) Lieke Marsman's poetry. What are the specific challenges of translating poetry? Who is best equipped to do it - the solo translator, co-translators or even collaborative groups - and why? How do you best engage with a source text, and how do you ensure that the end result ‘lives and breathes’ in the target language? Does it matter whether poetry translations are ‘marketable’, or do they exist primarily to further academic research? And could translation be a part of the UK’s poetry ‘renaissance’? Join practising translator and academic Sophie Collins, Literature Across Frontiers director Alexandra Büchler and Poetry Book Society manager Alice Mullen to mull over the big issues of the day for poetry in translation. Chaired by Erica Jarnes, managing director of the Poetry Translation Centre.
