Are you a busy business owner struggling to find time for marketing? Don't worry, you're not alone. Many business owners find it challenging to prioritise marketing amidst their daily operations. But fear not, because I've got you covered. In this episode, I'll share with you five quick and effective marketing strategies that you can implement in just five minutes each day. These strategies are designed to help you make the most of those short bursts of time and create valuable marketing content for your business. Before we dive into the strategies, let's talk about the concept of five minute marketing. The idea behind it is to leverage those small pockets of time throughout your day and turn them into opportunities for marketing. While you may not be able to create a masterpiece in just five minutes, you can still accomplish a lot. Short-form videos, for example, are an excellent way to utilise these brief moments. Simply grab your phone, share a few tips and tricks related to your business, and voila! You have a valuable piece of marketing content. Now, let's get into the five minute marketing strategies: Research One of the best ways to make use of those five-minute time slots is by doing some research. There are several options for research in the realm of marketing. You can explore relevant hashtags, identify potential advertising opportunities, or search for guest posting prospects. One useful technique is to type in the website or keywords you want to target, along with phrases like "article submission" or "guest post," and see what comes up in the search results. Bookmark the sites that catch your interest and return to them later to submit your articles. Additionally, you can look for journalists seeking sources, explore platforms like SourceBottle, or join communities and meetups to promote your business. The best part is that most of these research activities can be done conveniently on your phone. Ask Questions Questions are a powerful tool for engaging with your audience and building your profile. Take advantage of those five-minute intervals to ask questions on various social media platforms, such as Facebook groups, your own pages/profiles, YouTube shorts, or Instagram reels. You can even tap into the collaboration features available on Instagram to collaborate with others in creating posts and stories. Be sure to come back later to answer those questions in another five-minute time slot. Engaging with your audience and showing a genuine interest in their opinions can foster meaningful connections and improve your online presence. Check Your Profiles Taking a few minutes to review your social media profiles is essential. Ensure that your website link is up to date and that your profiles accurately reflect what you and your business are all about. You don't want to miss out on any potential opportunities because of outdated or incomplete profiles. Pay attention to your description, contact links, and profile/header images. Social media platforms often change their formatting, so make sure your images still look appropriate. By regularly maintaining your profiles, you present yourself professionally and increase your chances of making a strong impression on potential customers. Social Media Programming This five minute marketing strategy involves using tools like Meta Business Suite, TikTok, Meet Edgar, Later, Missing Letter, or Metricool to schedule your social media posts in advance. By dedicating a specific time slot to program your posts, you can create a consistent flow of content without constantly having to think about it. These tools offer features such as batch creation and variations, allowing you to save time and keep your platforms active and engaging. For instance, you can connect your blog's RSS feed to platforms like Missing Letter and Meet Edgar to automatically share your blog posts with customized variations across your social media channels. Convert Blog Posts into Videos: If you have a well-performing blog post, especially one that ranks well on search engines, consider transforming it into a video using tools like Pictory or Lumen5. By utilising the text-to-video feature, you can repurpose your blog content and create a brand new piece of video content. Simply input the URL of your blog post, let the video tool work its magic, and in just five minutes, you'll have a new and engaging form of content to share. Video content is highly engaging and can help you reach a wider audience. In conclusion, these five-minute marketing strategies are designed to help busy business owners like you make the most of their limited time. By incorporating these strategies into your daily routine, you can consistently produce valuable marketing content and stay connected with your audience. So, embrace those short bursts of time and start implementing these strategies today. Remember, small steps can add up to significant marketing results! I hope you found these five-minute marketing tips helpful. Let me know which one is your favourite and if you have any other strategies to add to the mix. How do you feel about public relations AKA PR and creating your own publicity? You know - putting yourself out there as an expert in your field so journalists know who to come to for quotes and insight around trending topics. You might be feeling a bit of uncertainty around this area - and I don't blame you. Many of us hate self-promotion and don't like the idea of being pushy or annoying to busy journalists who are tackling the fast-paced news world. But the thing is - you're doing yourself and everyone else a disservice if you're not putting yourself out there. And not promoting your programs, events, and expertise. It's time to turn all of that around. In today's episode of Marketing & Me, I'm chatting with Bec Derrington - the founder of the free PR platform, Sourcebottle - about the best ways to build your status. And you're in for a big treat!Let's get started.Show Notes: https://www.writetimemarketing.com.au/ep51-bec-derrington-pr-and-publicity-on-a-shoestring-budget/BOOK IN A FREE 30 MIN DISCOVERY CALL WITH LEANNEhttps://calendly.com/leanneshelton/30min
This week we talk about how you can get free (good) press! That’s right, there is a way you can collaborate with big names in media, no matter who you are. We also get to share that our passion project, Shop Brisbane, is up and running! Check out the website if you want the inside scoop on Brisbane’s Makers, Shakers, and Risk-Takers. You can also find it on Instagram and Facebook. This week’s question is from Jaimie, who asks:I’ve just launched a new product, and I want to get more exposure. What can I do?EPISODE NOTES:Media outlets and journalists want your stories, and you want the attention they attract. Here’s how you can pitch and begin to build a relationship with media outlets.TIPS- Your media pitch = a short punchy message to entice journalists to work with you and share your story.- This is not an ad.- Identify your target audience, and where they consume their media.- Create a list of media outlets which both attract your target audience, and fit your tone and the product or service you are trying to get exposure for.- Put the bulk of information at the top of your pitch.- Have a hook and a catchy subject line (if it’s an email).- Think of what barriers a journalist may have to sharing this, and remove them.- Sourcebottle is great for practice.- Don’t be afraid to follow up your pitch. We believe digital marketing is about having a conversation, so if you have any questions about growing your business in the digital world (from copywriting and content creation to campaign activation, and anything in between) ask us here!www.socialcut.com.auSubscribe to us on ITUNES, STITCHER, SPOTIFY, or your podcatcher of choice.Find us on FACEBOOK, TWITTER or INSTAGRAM.Become a Patron of That’s Not Canon Productions at Patreon! I have the QUEEN of SEO on the podcast today. It's going to be fun but most of all you are going to LOVE how she talks about SEO! Thank you for lending me your ears today – I know you have lots of choices, so I sincerely appreciate me being one of them! Today’s episode is brought to you by my new downable Ultimate Beginner’s Guide to Facebook Ads. This is a workbook full of exercises, tips and tricks on how to get your first Facebook ad hitting the goal you need it too. To download it now, go to www.socialmediaandmarketing.com.au/ads - Facebook Ads will change your business forever if you get them right! I have to tell you guys, I have complete Hollywood love heart eyes for our guest this week. Her name is Kate Toon and she is literally the Aussie Queen of SEO. I haven’t met Kate in real life, but I have had her on other podcasts, have followed her, have signed up for her emails and have basically “Jenn stalked her”. She might be the queen of SEO but I’m the queen of online stalking … just ask my friends. Good stalking – not creeping – just saying! So, when I reached out to her via LinkedIn, my fav social media platform, and asked her to be a guest on my podcast – her response flawed me. She wrote “Absolutely – thanks for asking”. No, I’ll get back to you or who the hell are you – just Absolutely, thanks for asking – now that’s how a queen does it – take note people! It’s needless to say, I’m excited to talk SEO with Kate Toon and copywriting too – because she’s an expert at that too. You are going to love this conversation with so much gold. But first, of course, everyone’s favourite section of the podcast – the discovery of the week! THIS WEEK’S DISCOVERY! Sourcebottle – have you heard of it? Spelt Source Bottle (not like tomato sauce!) Sourcebottle helps journalists and bloggers find expert sources and help PR pros and businesses get FREE PR coverage and publicity. Do I have your attention now? FREE PR – ummm golden! Getting PR for your business can not only set yourself and your business up as “experts” and the “go to” people, but it’s a great way of you building your brand and giving value to your audience, new and current! If you haven’t listened to Episode 14 of the podcast – go back and have a listen. I have PR expert Jules Brooke as my guest and she explains all about how to get it and how to leverage from it. Something like sourcebottle just makes it easier to find the places you can contribute too. Following them on Facebook and signed up to their email list. Every day they email or post about PR opportunities you can apply for and write for. This makes is really simple to start – because with PR that’s the most common question – where should I start. If PR is something that’s been sitting in your marketing plan as a strategy for a while – then here’s a handy tool to help you out. PS – another one like Sourcebottle I subscribe to is the Audacious Agency, they are located in Brisbane. Similar business model – worth checking out too! So there you go, two discoveries in one! Enjoy. As always, just a little disclaimer, my discoveries are just that and I am in no way affiliated with any of them but promise to tell you if I ever am. I just love them and from the response of my listeners, you guys, you are loving them too! Hey and if you have a little discovery, or something you use in your business that you’d like to share, please do so. Email me at jenn@jenndonovan.com.au or tag me @smallbusinessmadesimple. I really love to know what tools you use to help make your life simpler! SEO WITH QUEEN KATE TOON So, let’s get into the episode. And if you’re thinking just for second, hey Jenn why would you bring someone onto your podcast who you’ve never actually met, then I’d say, ha ha, give me about 30 minutes from now and you’ll see! So, how is Kate Toon. Her Instagram profile describes her at the Beyonce of SEO and Copy(!). Her LinkedIn profile describes her as a SEO Lover, Copywriting Mentor, Speaking, Podcaster, Author, Copywriting, and Hula Hooper – takes me back – who had a Big M Hula Hoop when they were young … I disgress! She’s all that and award-winning SEO copywriter and SEO consultant with over two decades of experience in all things advertising, digital and writing. Kate’s originally from the UK but now based just outside Sydney and has worked with brands such as eHarmony, Curash and Kmart, as well as helped countless small businesses produce great content and improve their copywriting and SEO. She’s the founder of The Clever Copywriting School and The Recipe for SEO Success eCourse, as well as co-host on the Hot Copy Podcast. Phew … now are you getting the picture – why I am stoked to have her on my podcast – yeah you are! Without any further ado – let’s get into it. Welcome Kate …. INTERVIEW WITH KATE TOON I hope you enjoyed that. I hope you got some ideas and thoughts for your business from it and well learnt a thing or two about this pretty cool thing called SEO! If you want to contact Kate, just head to the show notes at www.socialmediaandmarketing.com.au and look for Episode 39. http://www.katetooncopywriter.com.au/ https://www.linkedin.com/in/katetoon/ https://www.facebook.com/kateToon https://www.instagram.com/katetoon/ Got questions? Those things are like gold for podcasters like me! PS – you can leave more than one rating and review – just saying! But that is all for Episode 39. I’d love to connect with you all on social – so let’s get social on social – I’m on all the platforms, so let’s do that! …….. and remember small business peeps, as my opening song says, there’s no point in dreaming small!
In this interview, Bec talks about Media Relations and how to Gain Free Publicity. Why she set up SourceBottle and the resistance she initially encountered; how social media, especially Twitter, was instrumental to her success; as well as sharing tips for successfully pitching to a journalist; and how to avoid being ‘bland’. Today's guest Dr. Jonathan Brown of CitySkin has been not only listening to this show for the past 3-years, but he's also been implementing the ideas that caught his attention. The result? He's built a business he loves, going from 3 clients a week to over 3,000 a year. He's made marketing a hobby. So how did Dr Brown come to be on this episode of Australia's best marketing podcast? Check out the message I got from the good doctor via LinkedIn: Hi Tim, I have been listening to your podcast for the past 3 years and it has transformed my business. I have gone from being a full time GP to an award winning website designer and Director of Cityskin clinic (www.cityskin.com.au) - with a rather large turnover! I have listened to your podcast and taken action. I have built the Cityskin website from scratch and now contains a PHD's worth of information on all aspects of Cosmetic treatments. We are now seen by patients as trusted information providers. The website contains videos, interesting articles and easy to read guides to cosmetic treatments. This, combined with raving reviews, has meant that we are fully booked out week after week in 3 locations. We were also delighted to have received an award for 'Australasia's Best Cosmetic Website 2016' at the recent Cosmetic Industry awards in Sydney. As a thank you I thought I'd send you a gift for all the hard work that you put into the podcast. It keeps me inspired every week so thank you. Here is a gift voucher that you can use for something nice to drink - I didn't want a bottle to smash in the post! If you ever want someone to talk first hand on the podcast about how your advice helped their business flourish then feel free to get in touch! All the best, Dr. Jonathan Brown How good is that! Side note: this is a pretty great template to get yourself on podcasts. It hit's all the right notes - flattery, bribery PLUS he didn't forget the ask at the end. So I called him. Listen in as Dr Jonathan Brown walks us through his 7 key take-aways from The Small Business Big Marketing Show: 1. Don't try and cheat Google. A few years ago Google released it's hummingbird algorithm update. Amit Singhal, a Senior VP at Google, said of the algorithm "Google simply asks that you create relevant, unique, helpful content on a regular basis". That's it! 2. Make it easy for people to do business with you Cityskin clinic has its processes nailed. They use software called cliniko for their client bookings and there is a solid, automated follow up process in place so that customers can easily book in and book a follow up. 3. The power and potential of review sites to create trust Dr Brown has a few complications with reviews as health practitioners cannot obtain testimonials by law. They can however ask for feedback. So if the good doctor can benefit from positive feedback surely you can too. 4. Know your limits Dr Brown does WAY more of the grunt work than I usually recommend but that's ok because he loves it! It's a hobby. That being said he still knows his limitations. Design is not his strong suit so that's all been outsourced. As have the phones and other business processes, either to a company or to technology. 5. Put a PHD of content on your website There are over 80,000 words of content on the Cityskin clinic website. That is literally a PHD worth of material. They are also creating videos and are looking at other ways to create content. This positions them as the authority and guess what? Google (and their prospective clients) love them for it. 6. Know your customers This is marketing 101. You need to understand who your customer is so you can market to them effectively. Cityskin's client is generally a 40+ female. So the website and clinic colours are feminine and the design and tone is sophisticated. 7. Tap into the emotional side of your clients Knowing who you customers are is not enough. You need to know them emotionally as well. Why are they looking for your product or service? How does it make them feel? Also in this episode of Small Business Big Marketing... I share another low cost marketing idea in What Have You Got To Lose? Today's idea will show you how to grow your influence within your industry by starting a LinkedIN Group. And we go back into the show's vault, revisiting a bit of a marketing hero of mine - Jay Baer, who explained why it's so important to hug your haters and how to do it. Notepad and pen at the ready, it's another HUGE show. Let's go. EPISODE TIMELINE 00:00 Two marketing insights 01:18 Teaser 02:09 Welcome & overview 03:55 How to build your authority by building a LinkedIn group 06:46 Insights into Workplace Assured 08:26 Today's guest introduction - Dr Jonathan Brown 11:00 Interview with Dr Jonathan Brown 58:35 Insights into Key Person of Influence 01:00:10 My Top 3 Attention Grabbers from my chat with Dr Jonathan Brown 01:32:35 Wrap-up and an insight in to both a past guest & next week's guest MY TOP 3 MARKETING ATTENTION GRABBERS Take action. Turn the marketing of your business into a hobby. I've spoken about this many times before but it just works. Remove the fear by getting curious about your marketing. See what works and have fun with it. Remember that mistakes are just proof that you're trying. Be helpful. This is the easiest and best way to come up with ideas for content. How can you be helpful? After years of being selfless and taking care of everyone else’s needs, (ok, that is her humble opinion, but work with her here) Roberta’s skin was dry, itchy and irritated. In 2005, at 43, she finally realized that taking care of herself and her skin was important. She discovered exfoliating products, but like the proverbial Goldilocks, none were completely satisfying her needs & wants: Some were too greasy, some didn’t smell right, and some had too large crystals of sugar. Heading to the kitchen, Roberta played like a “mad chemist” to create her own scrub. By June of 2006, her blend was perfected: Roberta brought on her sister Michelle and ScrubzBody Natural Skin Care was officially started. Five years after launching in a renovated garage, the sisters opened a small manufacturing/storefront, in Bethpage, NY. In 2014, the growing business moved to a much larger storefront. ScrubzBody maintains a retail business and does both private label and wholesale, with clients such as Wild by Nature and Whole Foods Markets. The business needed exposure, and the budget was tight, so Roberta set out to get noticed in various publications, using HARO extensively. She and/or the business has been published and quoted in over 80 skin care and business articles, blogs and beauty magazines. Roberta was a panelist for the Long Island Newsday Connect Small Business Seminar, she was a guest for a natural remedy segment of the Dr. Oz show which aired on 10/24/14, as well as a food related segment which aired on 2/29/16. Roberta did a workshop on Indie Business Cruise 2016 about getting Free Publicity for your small business and she recently published “The Power of Free Publicity, Using HARO (Help a Reporter Out) to Build Relationships & Get Press Without a PR Firm.” She received the Nassau County Legislature Trailblazer award for her charity work on 3/21/16. In this episode, we answer questions about how to sell a package of workshops through your website, how to find your target audience online, and how to get your business more attention and exposure in the media. In this episode we answered the following questions: Jodie Gale – Facebook group Hi, Juliet and Clinton,“I am in the process of updating my website. I currently offer Saturday afternoon SOUL sessions. There is one x 2-hour space available each week. Because I sell these as a package, I would like a 'book/buy now' style button, which I would like to link to available dates and a payment button. Because this is just one session a week and my private practice is part-time (with weekly, long-term clients), I don't need to invest in a full-on booking system right now. What other options are there? Or would a PayPal-style system suffice?" Julianne www.balancedwellness.com.au For the past 15 years my work has been Chinese massage (Tui Na), and counselling for the past 5 years. My question is how do I move towards finding my target audience for Teaching Qigong to help people who are stressed in their body and mind and want improvement in general health?” Alison Howarth – Facebook group – penrithcounselling.com.au “I'm really curious about SourceBottle. Sourcebottle is a site where you can respond to people wanting to interview experts in the media, but I rarely see a question for my specialization, which is Domestic Violence – DV recovery and counselling for women. I was wondering if it's worthwhile going pro for $25/week? Are there other ways I can get the attention of the media for my niche? In episode 37 on #MerryBiz we talk you through the exact steps we take (and have taken) to get featured on the media! We've been featured across multiple newspapers, magazines and TV and today we want to inspire you to make it happen for your business and brand! We're talking traditional media like newspapers, magazines, TV and radio. These channels can still create a certain reputation for your brand, even though many websites reach more people these days. Which means that you can use these steps for everything and anything: media coverage, guest posts, interviews on podcasts, working with brands. We go into detail in today's episode but here are the overall steps you need to take to get featured in the media. ONE: make a list of media outlets you want to be featured on. Keep that list handy and always update it when you find new channels. It's a good idea to grab their contact details too if you can. TWO: engage with them online. We're talking commenting, liking, sharing their content as well as consuming their content (so you can better understand the kind of stuff they like and what they're looking for in a story). THREE: email them with an offer they CAN'T refuse. In today's episode we give you a SUPER tip which will make your pitch even more appealing. PLUS in episode 36 with Janet Murray she gives you an exact pitching strategy (yes... listen to that one!). FOUR: follow up and follow up again. But like, don't be annoying! FIVE: enjoy yoself! Don't make this a horrible task. Enjoy the process and celebrate the moments where you are featured! We like to re-share all of our features on the blog right HERE! Here's some other tips: Subscribe to SourceBottle (or something similar). Self-publish and have an opinion! If you have a blog already... BOOM! Good job. Because your content has the potential to get seen or picked up (like THIS post did for us) and media outlets may contact you for an interview or simply ask to republish your content. Gotta love that! So take a listen to today's episode and get inspired to take ACTION to get your face in the media! Yay! Always merrymaking, Emma + Carla See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Bec Derrington is the brains behind SourceBottle a service that connects journos and bloggers with experts. She's doing deservedly well, but the path hasn't been easy.
Bec Derrington is the founder of SourceBottle.com, a free and easy-to-use platforms that connects bloggers and journalists with knowledgeable sources - specialists, subject matter experts and thought leaders. Given she has literally helped thousands of storytellers (from the media) connect with informational experts, the people who tell the stories, Bec is well placed to see what works and what doesn't when it comes to matching journalists and broadcast producers with informational experts. In this interview with Trevor Young, Bec discusses the power of earning third-party endorsement from the media, the advantage of building a digital footprint and why it's important for subject matter experts to have an opinion which they stick by.
