In this episode of Occupied Thoughts, FMEP Fellow Ahmed Moor speaks with human rights attorney Professor Noura Erakat about her relationship to Palestine, the movement for Palestinian freedom, and the how she sees the ties among different and overlapping movements for justice and liberation. Drawing upon Noura's recent article in the Boston Review, "The Boomerang Comes Back," the two look at the ways in which state violence in the U.S. and Palestine reflect each other, the efforts to desensitize Americans to violence against Palestinians in both the U.S. and Palestine, and the political movement and mass mobilization that will guide us forward. We've all lowballed ourselves when going into negotiations. Whether it was for a raise, a proposal to a new client, a request to be a keynote speaker or a promotion, we've probably left opportunity on the table without even realizing it. The good news is that it's extremely common, so you're not alone. But the bad news is that you could probably be getting so much more than you realize, but you're not asking in the right way. This week, Dia Bondi teaches us how to ask like an auctioneer in negotiations. At auctions, you're not looking for an immediate yes. You're searching until you ultimately find that no, and that's where the fun really begins. You never know what you can get until you ask, but if you never receive that initial “no” and start the negotiation process, you'll never know where the ceiling of potential is for your ask. So, in this episode, Dia encourages us to step out of our comfort zones and challenge ourselves to maximize our potential to further ourselves and our careers by learning to ask like an auctioneer. Join Timbo's Membership and take control of your marketing Do you love the idea of self-publishing a book for your business in 2023? Then imagine this scenario. You and your biggest competitor are standing in front of a prospect. Your competitor gingerly hands over their business card. You proudly hand over your book. No prizes for guessing who's built instant trust? If you love the idea of having a book to promote you and your business then listen up as today's guest has written 42 of them, and sold nine million copies. It's a self-publishing episode 635 of The (13 year-old, award-winning) Small Business Big Marketing podcast. A little more about 4 Ingredients founder Kim McCosker ... If you're a long time listener then you'll have heard me say multiple times that a book is a business card on steroids. It positions you as an expert, it's a wonderful way to get that mountain of knowledge you're standing on out of your head and on to paper, plus it builds trust and credibility with your prospects and customers. I've experienced this myself with my own book The Boomerang Effect. Whilst the sale of some 7,500 copies didn't make me rich, it's been responsible for getting me well over one hundred keynote speaking gigs over the years. Books can be such an amazing marketing channel. And if you have any limiting beliefs around becoming an author please put them aside for the duration of this chat with today's special guest. Her name is Kim McCosker, she's the founder of 4 Ingredients and the creator of tens of thousands of recipes, all with four ingredients or less. She's also the author of 42 self-published cookbooks of which she has sold over nine million copies. Off the back of her self-publishing success, she's got an eCommerce store, a beautifully shot YouTube channel (don't watch it if you're hungry!), and she's just released The Easiest Cooking Show Ever on Foxtel. So pen and paper at the ready folks as Kim takes us inside the world of self-publishing. I started off by asking her what made her think the world needed another cookbook! It is said that the boomerang effect is a situation in which a persuasive message produces attitude change in the direction opposite to that intended. Boomerang effects occur when recipients generate counterarguments substantially stronger than the arguments contained in the original message. It is also believed that one of the most serious implications of boomerang effects is that messages created with a pro-social intent can result in the targeted attitude or behavior in someone becoming worse. However, a boomerang does not only target people socially, it is also a tool which is a bent or angular throwing object, typically flat on one side and rounded on the other side, so that it soars or curves in flight. What does all this mean for you? It means that because of the boomerang effect, whatever the enemy throws at you it has already been setup to backfire. We discuss the importance of striking the right chord in communication and how personal history can color how people hear you. Talia answers some of the questions she is always ready to answer, such as how she came to start her entrepreneurship journey at such a young age, and what obstacles and resistance she faced during the early stages of her journey. We also explore her perspective on Gen Z entrepreneurship and young people who reject a more traditional path, and why she is such an advocate for people carving out their own path. Tim Reid is the founder and host of Australia's most popular marketing podcast, The Small Business Big Marketing Show, author of The Boomerang Effect, accomplished corporate speaker, marketing guru and legit funny bugger. He and I had an almost-adversarial (but totally fun) conversation, which had very little to do with marketing. And while it sounds unreasonable to say, he may even be looser (not loser) than me. Among other things, he pointed out my propensity (capacity, tendency, inclination) to speak in lists (see what I did there). Enjoy Tim. I didn't but you might (lol).
