From Hanging Chads to The Precinct Strategy – How Elections & Democracy Hang In the Balance With Election Law Professor Richard Hasen of the University of California, Irvine, Co-Director of the Fair Elections and Free Speech Center and Host Richard Levick of LEVICK: Professor Richard Hasen is the Chancellor's Professor of Law and Political Science at the University of California, Irvine and Co-Director of the Fair Elections and Free Speech Center. He is a nationally recognized expert in election law and campaign finance regulation and is the co-author of leading casebooks in election law and remedies; named one of the 100 most influential lawyers in America by The National Law Journal; author of the recently released book Cheap Speech: How Disinformation Poisons Our Politics—and How to Cure It and writes the often-quoted Election Law Blog. Professor Hasen speaks with host Richard Levick of LEVICK and discusses election law from the Florida election recount through the Steve Bannon designed “Precinct Strategy,” a four part campaign to be unleashed for the 2022 election cycle which includes election-denier poll watchers, on-call GOP lawyers, party friendly district attorneys and loyalist Boards of Canvassers, all designed to intimidate voters and drive down Democratic participation. With Moore v. Harper likely headed to the Supreme Court in 2023, which would give profound powers to the states to curb voting, this show has never been more timely.

In a career spanning over 45 years, Harvey has served in a number of academic, clinical, research, administrative, and consulting capacities with the Department of Veterans Affairs, the Department of Defense, academia, and industry to include Chief of the Audiology and Speech Pathology Service and Associate Chief of Staff for Research and Development at the Bay Pines VA Healthcare System, the Director of Research at the Army Audiology and Speech Center at Walter Reed Army Medical Center, and the Director of Audiology Research at Starkey Hearing Technologies. He currently serves as the Head of Research Audiology at Lively Hearing Corporation. In this episode… Hearing is a sense that we often take for granted. We assume we'll always have that ability until it starts to diminish or fail. Underneath the surface, however, is an incredibly complex system that makes it all possible. There's still so much we're learning about when it comes to the biology of hearing, and at the forefront of this research is Dr. Nina Kraus. As a professor at Northwestern, Dr. Kraus has found some illuminating research on the plasticity of the mind and the science of auditory learning. Her lab, Brainvolts, seeks to discover more on the subject while also educating the greater public. Now she's here to keep us in the know about her innovative studies and where the field is going. In this episode of the ListenUp! Podcast, Dr. Mark Syms talks with Dr. Nina Kraus, a professor of Neurobiology and Otolaryngology at Northwestern University, to learn about the biology behind hearing and how it all works together. The two discuss a host of topics, including why hearing is such a unique sense, the latest tools for measuring hearing, and the overlooked factors behind hearing problems. They also touch on her book, Of Sound Mind, and the culmination of her research.

On this episode, after a little unexpected pandemic hiatus, I'm finally back again! And this time it's with a bonus episode featuring something that's a bit off the beaten path for my usual fare: a personal story-time episode of sorts! So, please join me as I fully recount the detailed story about how I got into Doctor Who in the first place -- way back in the dark ages of the 80s as a young geeky teenager! Given that my story has a lot of baby-queer-feels running throughout, I just thought that Pride month would be a great time to finally take the time to get the whole story recorded on my podcast – even though as I'm publishing this, admittedly I'm a few days late after Pride Month ended, all due to some technical issues. Oops! #mercuryretrogradewoes Anyway, grab some popcorn or other snacks and roll up for a big ol' nostalgia trip! Oh, and also please be sure to also stick around for the other stuff on the episode too! There's some administrative chat about the State of the Podcast (and your podcaster) at the beginning before the story, as well as some admittedly pretty disappointed feels about Series 12 afterward (which I kept thankfully short – as to not be too much of a squee-killer). There's also even a little un-cut audio squeeful mini-review bonus (that I did for the 'Discussing Who' podcast) for you to enjoy for some further funsies! All leaving a pretty interesting sandwich of content! And yeah, it's admittedly bit of an emotional roller coaster at times, with the highs of squees and the lows of discontent to navigate, but hopefully you'll all still enjoy it nonetheless! Strap in, it might be a bumpy ride! P.S. Also, there's a poll! I love a poll! This message was taught at The Jesus Encounter conference. In this message you wll learn that you are what you believe and you will RECEIVE EXACTLY WHAT YOU BELIEVE. Every word you speak will determine your victory or your defeat. Neurosurgeons have discovered that the Speech Center in the brain rules over all the nerves.
