This week, Dave and Megan talk about FOUNTAIN OF YOUTH (2:47), Guy Ritchie's incredibly derivative and frustrating adventure film, starring John Krasinski and Natalie Portman as siblings on a globe-trotting trek for (you guessed it) the mythical Fountain of Youth. Then, we all (Evan, Dave, and Megan) discuss FEAR STREET: PROM QUEEN (29:21), a slasher horror film and the latest entry in the franchise based on the R.L. Stine novel. Directed by Matt Palmer and starring India Fowler, Suzanna Son, and Fina Strazza, it follows high school prom queen finalists dying one by one. One of us had a lot of fun, but two of us were disappointed. Yet we all agree on some of the good performances and the excellent 80s soundtrack. And on this week's Patreon bonus episode, we cover the winner of our sci-fi horror poll: James Ward Byrkit's 2013 film, COHERENCE!
The Burgeoning Independent TV Industry. Plus, the ‘Severance' S2 Trailer Is Finally Here! Chris and Andy talk about the trailers for ‘Severance' Season 2 (0:00) and ‘Say Nothing,' which were released this week (1:00). Then they talk about two recent independently made shows—‘Penelope' from Mark Duplass and ‘Shatter Belt' from James Ward Byrkit (21:08)—and how this burgeoning independent TV industry compares to the independent movie scene of the '90s (37:40). Join hosts Gaius and Jackson as we celebrate a monumental milestone—200 episodes of Back To The Blockbuster! In this exciting episode, we dive deep into the intriguing world of science fiction and psychological thrillers, exploring two standout films that we individually picked because the other had yet to see the film. First up is Jackson's pick for Gaius as we unravel the mind-bending narrative of "Coherence," directed by James Ward Byrkit and featuring stellar performances from a relatively unknown cast. Discover how this indie gem plays with the concept of parallel realities and the complexity of human relationships during a fateful dinner party. Next, Gaius' choice for Jackson allows us to shift gears to examine Tarsem Singh's visually arresting "The Cell," starring Jennifer Lopez, Vince Vaughn, and Vincent D'Onofrio. We discuss the film's unique blend of horror and psychological depth, as well as its artistic direction and bold storytelling. Tune in for a nostalgic journey as the hosts reflect on our favorite moments from both films, share behind-the-scenes trivia, and reveal what makes these movies unforgettable within their genres. Whether you're a die-hard fan of science fiction or a lover of psychological thrillers, this episode promises to be an exhilarating ride through the cinematic landscape. Don't miss the celebration and be part of the conversation as we celebrate 200 episodes thanks in large part because of everyone listening. This milestone could not be accomplished without any of you. Here's to 200 more! Where To Watch Coherence Where To Watch The Cell
Coherence is a 2013 American surreal science fiction psychological thriller film directed by James Ward Byrkit in his directorial debut. The film had its world debut on September 19, 2013, at Fantastic Fest and stars Emily Foxler as a woman who must deal with strange occurrences following the close passing of a comet. Byrkit came up with the idea for Coherence after deciding that he wanted to test the idea of shooting a film "without a crew and without a script". He chose to shoot in his own home and developed the film's science fiction aspect out of necessity, as he wanted to "make a living room feel bigger than just a living room". While Byrkit did have a specific idea for how the film would unfold, he selected improvisational actors and gave them the basic outline of their characters, motivations, and major plot points. Emily Foxler as Em Maury Sterling as Kevin Nicholas Brendon as Mike Lorene Scafaria as Lee Hugo Armstrong as Hugh Elizabeth Gracen as Beth Alex Manugian as Amir Lauren Maher as Laurie

In this unfathomably fortuitous episode of Tubi or Not Tubi, we have the absolute honor of sitting down with three of the minds and movers behind Coherence, a personal podcast favorite film! As we chat with director James Ward Byrkit, co-writer Alex Manugian, and actress Lauren Maher, we get deep in the weeds of how Coherence came to be... But much like the film, as the night goes on, the conversation steers us into a discussion of Shatter Belt, Pirates of the Caribbean, Grey's Anatomy, Rango, Rango the video game for the Nintendo Wii, Mind Forest, A Christmas Wedding at the Bakery 3: Bakers Dozen, Peaceful Tadpoles, and Potato People! This is a 10th Anniversary interview so thorough you'll be checking the color of your glowstick by the end like we were...

With the low budget feel of Primer, and the confined dinner party feel of The Invitation, Coherence may not be everyone's cup of tea, but it is a feat for the ultra low price point. In which the Mister joins me in reviewing COHERENCE (2013) currently streaming on Hulu but also available on other platforms. Written and directed by James Ward Byrkit, from a story by James Ward Byrkit and Alex Manugian, the film follows a night in the lives of a group of friends who are gathering for dinner on the night that a comet is passing overhead. This is a low budget sci-fi thriller that more than makes up for the lack of special effects most come to expect from the genre with a tight script, great performances and a well-developed and continuous atmosphere of fear and paranoia - we highly recommend. The film is not rated but clocks in at 1 h 29 m. Please note there are a few SPOILERS in this review. PARALLEL PARKING: “With great ability comes great accountability”. Are we alone in the universe? Perhaps, more importantly, is our universe alone in the universe? Sounds like it’s time for Episode 47 of Pop Art, the podcast where my guest chooses a movie from popular culture and I’ll select a film from the more art/classic/indie side of cinema with a connection to it. This time, I am happy to welcome as my guest, Hollywood hyphenate, writer/director/producer Keith Hartman who has chosen the exciting and innovative animated film Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and I have chosen the low budget, indie film and first feature from James Ward Byrkit, Coherence. Both movies with plots containing parallel universes. And in this episode, we ask such questions as: Who steals a bagel? What happened on the final night of shooting in Coherence? What is PDNY? What scene in Rick and Morty resembles a scene in Coherence? What happens whenever you hit pause when a train goes by in Spider-Man? How much did it cost to make Coherence? Where does “leap of faith” come from and how does existentialism, post modernism and gender meets diversity fit in? James Ward Byrkit is an innovative filmmaker whose projects range from blockbuster, big-budget tentpoles to low-budget, personal films. Raised in Flagstaff, Arizona, Jim was first inspired by Star Wars, the Twilight Zone television series, and musicals like West Side Story. These classics influenced his work as a story-board artist and conceptual consultant on the “Pirates of the Caribbean” trilogy, including his suggestion to director Gore Verbinski that the first film have a musical number. Jim also co-wrote the Oscar-winning hit film “Rango.” Between big-budget projects, he directed and co-wrote the mind-blowing 2014 sci-fi film “Coherence,” currently streaming on Amazon, Hulu and iTunes. In this interview, Jim discusses these projects, as well as a would-be flash mob version of “Lord Of The Rings” in a mall, and the importance for upcoming filmmakers to form a creative community. He also discusses the importance of structure in screenwriting, getting a call from “Dark Knight Trilogy” co-writer David Goyer to collaborate, and the upcoming screening of “Coherence” with original cast members at the Secret Movie Club of Los Angeles on Feb. 8.

On this episode we we’re honored to interview James Ward Byrkit, the Director of Coherence, one of Mike’s favorite indie films of late. It’s available for streaming on Amazon or downloand on iTunes.
From the annals of low-budget mind-trip filmmaking, today the show examines James Ward Byrkit's 2013 sci-fi drama COHERENCE. Starring a cast of unknowns, shot in a pseudo-documentary style on a very short schedule, the film is an ingenious example of economical, seat-of-your-pants filmmaking. But it's also one that divides your hosts. In this episode, Bill inexplicably compares it to the Bourne movies; Renan inexplicably compares it to The Wire; the various fan-offered timelines are explored; the influence of Amazon and Netflix on independent film and the definition of "duopsony" are discussed; the logical implications of certain storylines are debated; and and two actors' struggles with alcohol and Bill Clinton are gossiped about.

HoboTrashcan.com is hosting a Gathr screening of the award-winning indie film Coherence in Baltimore at the Landmark Harbor East on Oct. 23. But to make the screening happen, we have to presell 90 tickets and there are just three days left to do it. (Gathr works like Kickstarter – if the ticket goal isn’t reached, the screening doesn’t happen and everyone who bought a ticket isn’t charged.) To promote this screening, and the film itself, we’ve been interviewing people involved with the film. Last week, we talked to the film’s co-writer and director James Ward Byrkit and star Maury Sterling. And today we talk to star Emily Baldoni. What’s it like making a high concept, highly-improvised sci-fi film on a small budget? What’s next for Baldoni? Did she really meet Byrkit on a project called Booty? The answers to these questions and more are in this week’s podcast. If you like the show, please help spread the word and buy tickets to the screening here: http://gathr.us/screening/8802 This week’s music: Intro – “Giddy Up” by Tahuna Breaks Interstitial – “The Ring” and “Butterfly Lament” by Peacock Ball End – “Staring into Mirrors” by Sexstone Never miss a show. This week The Hollywood Outsider presents a special episode in which Justin has a spoiler free conversation with James Ward Byrkit, writer/director of the science fiction film COHERENCE. On the night of an astronomical anomaly, eight friends at a dinner party experience a troubling chain of reality bending events. Part cerebral sci-fi and part relationship drama, COHERENCE is a tightly focused, intimately shot film that quickly ratchets up with tension and mystery.
