Fall back in time with Legends Podcast! All month long, we're talking about time travel, paradoxes, and being your own Grandpa. We're back in 2014, to live, die, and repeat the process as the snake eats its own tail. Ethan Hawke plays a timecop who meets a stranger in a bar, played by Succession's Sarah Snook. Once the stranger tells his story, none of their lives will ever be the same, while the lives of thousands hang in the balance amid a mysterious bombing spree. Based on Robert A. Heinlein's classic short story  ‘—All You Zombies—' and directed by the Spierig Brothers, this indie Aussie flick may not have reinvented the box office, but it might contain enough twists to make temporal sleuths happy. The outcome is not pre-ordained! Will our time travel month have a happy ending, or does this strange loop leave us feeling… not ourselves? This one was written by Jedi1Josh who says, “Great Podcast. I'd like to hear more super short stories. Also is there any chance of doing an episode where you read All You Zombies by Heinlein?”Thanks for your review and requests Josh. We are working on another episode featuring super short stories. As for All You Zombies, to the best of my knowledge that story is not in the public domain so we can't record it. Sorry to disappoint. We would love it if you'd leave us a 5 star review on Apple Podcasts if you think we deserve it. And we love to hear from you. Send us an email, scott@lostscifi.com.We've narrated a few Ray Bradbury stories and shared them on the podcast and I liked all of them, but I LOVE this one. From the yellowed and tattered pages of the November 1948 issue of Startling Stories our story can be found on page 131, The Visitor by Ray Bradbury…I narrated The Visitor not only because it was written by Ray Bradbury, it's more than that, the idea that greed and envy can mess up a good thing is such a simple but meaningful concept, and a great lesson. I searched for a long time and I couldn't find this story available anywhere which is another reason I narrated The Visitor.Next on The Lost Sci-Fi Podcast, Walter Sills labored for years as an unknown laboratory worker—but at fifty he makes his great discovery! I grew up watching MTV as a teen (and beyond) and one band that stood out for me were THE HOOTERS (A Philadelphia PA band that looked fun and lyrically different with lines and melodies you'd remember for a long time).   Who can forget the songs "And We Danced", "All You Zombies", "Day by Day" and "Hanging on a Heartbeat" ? It was a great honor to finally talk to Eric Bazilian! The Hooters just got off a tour with Rick Springfield & Tommy TuTone. ********* Matt and I (rob) talk to Eric about:  - Eric's beginnings at age 10 with his band The Limestones - Being a huge part of the monumental debut album from Cyndi Lauper (Eric wrote and played the guitar riff for Girls Just Wanna Have Fun; his partner Rob Hyman wrote Time After Time with Cyndi) - We find out how the HOOTERS got their name and Eric even shows us and plays us his very own Hooter - The creation of Joan Osbourne's hit song "one of us" (in which Eric wrote) - Eric's connection to Sweden - How The Hooter's are big in Germany (move over David Hasselhoff!) - Paul Stanley  - The Philly Taco  and much much more! ************ You can find Eric (or the Hooters) on Facebook & Instagram. Finally we've come to the adaptation of a tragic 1950s Robert Heinlein short story about really cruel timeloops that is “Predestination.” Yup, it's been a long time. We're pretty sure some old man stole our car and messed around with the radio presets and other buttons, and long story short, it's 2018 and our Creedence tapes are missing. …I may be mixing my movie jokes here. Anyway, it's “Predestination,” the 2014 Sarah Snook and Ethan Hawke vehicle that adapts what might have felt like an eminently unadaptable but classic 1959 Robert Heinlein short story, “All You Zombies.” As we say in the episode, if you haven't read “All You Zombies” or watched “Predestination,” we suggest watching the movie first — the twists (of which there are a ton) hit a lot harder if you don't have experience with the short. We definitely suggest checking out “All You Zombies” if you haven't (although it's very similar to what's in the movie) because it's one of those time travel stories that has inspired a lot of others. As we don't advocate piracy, here's an Amazon link where you can snag a Kindle version. Heinlein wrote a couple of these intense timeloop stories, and “All You Zombies” followed another crack at the idea: “By His Bootstraps,” which Heinlein wrote 18 years earlier, and “The Door into Summer,” published in 1957. “By His Bootstraps” is another short story whose influences can definitely be felt resounding through time travel stories, and both works are worth checking out. Another book we mentioned in this episode: “The Man Who Folded Himself,” by David Gerrold. Written in 1973, it also digs into the idea of time travel and meeting yourself, and the weird identity entanglements that can result thereof.

The Hooters were most known for their handful of rock singles in the 80s: "And We Danced," "Day By Day," "All You Zombies," to name a few. There is a reggae-tinged to "All You Zombies." Earlier versions of the song were more overt because when they formed, The Hooters were one of the US's first ska bands. Today we sit down with Hooters' members Rob Hyman and Eric Bazilian to talk about their ska years in Philadelphia. The group got a lot of local radio play with their cover of The Skatalites' "Man on the Street." We also discuss their first rendition of "All You Zombies," which was another crowd-pleaser during these years. Their history with ska is expansive. Rob tells us about visiting Jamaica in the 60s as a teen and hearing Eric Monty Morris' "Sammy Dead" on the radio and immediately deciding he needed to track that record down. We also dive deep into a very unusual and interesting time for the band in the 80s when they collaborated with Cyndi Lauper on her "She's So Unusual" album. We discuss such favorites as "Time After Time" and "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun" and hear about all the ska and reggae elements that started out on this record in the demo phase (Some of those elements remained!) The band confirms for us that Cyndi loves ska. And of course, it wouldn't be a proper episode of In Defense of Ska if we didn't ask a fellow Philly band about Catbite. And no surprise, they are besties!  Support the show

Come and listen about some flesh eaters and I will do my best not to nibble on you, I promise. For this title, All You Zombies, the artist is The Hooters. Oh and forgive my faux pas about Billy Connolly, seems I tried to make him a real zombie when he's very much breathing. My zombie brain was on the fritz at the time I recorded this. Whoops!

The Moon Is A Harsh Mistress ). The Number of The Beast ). Time travel is such a powerful fictional device. It allows creators to shine a light on the cultural struggles and social ills of the present by making powerful connections with the past, and by offering wonderful or horrifying visions of the future. Of course, it can also just be a whole lot of fun! But time travel is uniquely powerful as a tool for feminist writers; after all, feminism has always fought to prevent women’s contributions from being written out of history. Time travel allows for stories in which women struggle not just to gain power but to regain their place in time itself. With special guest author and journalist Annalee Newitz! This week's behind the scenes dispatch from "Ska Boom! An Oral History About The Birth Of American Ska & Reggae" is a bit about the story of The Hooters.  For those in the know, the band -  which was founded by Rob Hyman and Eric Bazilian - burst onto the Philadelphia club scene in 1980 and very quickly became a huge success along their native East Coast. Their unique blend of ska, reggae and rock n roll was a fresh and powerful sound and in 1983 The Hooters released their first independent album "Amore", which sold over 100,000 copies. "Amore" introduced the original ska and reggae versions of songs like "All You Zombies", "Hanging On A Heartbeat", "Fightin' On The Same Side" and "Blood From A Stone."  It was also during this time that Rob and Eric, along with producer Rick Chertoff, wrote and played on Cyndi Lauper's debut album "She's So Unusual".  In this podcast, Rob shares about how he was first introduced to ska while on a family vacation in Jamaica in the mid-60s, the process of starting the band and their ska and reggae sound and what it was like to work and record with Cyndi Lauper and how they brought a ska and reggae influence to songs on her debut album.

"We were born into this job." Time travel stories come in all shapes and sizes – some are more focused on the fun and entertainment. Others use the conceit to allow for explorations of themes and ideas. Robert A. Heinlein's short story “—All You Zombies—” is more the latter, and the Spierig brothers – Michael and Peter – do a great job adapting it for the silver screen with their film Predestination. And while it's easy to get lost in time loops and find fault in rules and story construction, this film is an easy one to enjoy with the paradoxes presented because of the themes and concepts it develops. Join us – Pete Wright and Andy Nelson – as we conclude our time travel series with the Spierig brothers' 2014 film Predestination. We talk about the nature of the film and why it works, even if the film does spend the first half of its running time setting things up. We look at the meaning of the word ‘predestination' and what it means in context with this film and the ideas put forth. We chat about Ethan Hawke (busiest man in Hollywood) and how great he is here, and also about Sarah Snook, who really puts forth an incredibly challenging performance and nails every bit of it. We debate the strength of Noah Taylor's character and if he's really necessary for the story. And we discuss what the Spierig brothers bring to the table here and how well they work as writers, producers and directors, but also visual effects artists and composers. There's a lot to discuss in a film like this, and we have a fantastic time unpacking it. Check out the movie then tune in! The Next Reel – when the movie ends, our conversation begins! Gracias! Gracias! Welcome the newest episode of Dark Discussions, your place for the discussion of horror film, fiction, and all that’s fantastic. All you zombies. Well, that's the name of a short story by one of the most important writers in the 20th century. The author, Robert Heinlein, was a leader in the science fiction tale. His career spanned decades and encompassed the golden age of sci-fi literature. All You Zombies though was actually a time travel story and the title in some ways was more a metaphor of people and their loss of self. A pair of Australian film makers, the Spierig brothers, best known for the horror sci-fi film Daybreakers, are back with their take on the Heinlein tale, remaining the story in its movie format as Predestination. The film stars Ethan Hawke and newcomer Sarah Snook in what some have said is a star making performance. When a bartender in a local Manhattan lounge serves drinks to the various regulars, a stranger enters and during their conversation admits he is the author of a self help column in the local paper. When the two make a bet over a bottle of whiskey, we soon discover that the bartender may be a lot more than what he says he is and the stranger's story may lead to something much bigger than any of them would ever think. Though a VOD release and having only a minor theater run, the film has been unanimously received as a success by most critics. With its varying twists and larger plot that revolves around an unknown terrorist, the film has brought much talk on the internet of what it really is all about. Dark Discussions tries to tackle the elaborate plot and finally give their opinion of what are some saying is the first great genre film of 2015.
