I believe that most indie filmmakers have a dream of making a feature film, getting accepted to the Sundance Film Festival, and that film would be fought over in a massive bidding war that generates millions of dollars for the filmmakers. I've called this dream the lottery ticket mentally. I always say that someone wins wins the lottery every week somewhere.Well today's guest is that lottery ticket winner. Today on the show we have writer/director Max Barbakow, the filmmaker behind the largest sale at Sundance in history. His film Palm Springs sold for a record-breaking $17.5 million and .69¢. Those last cents is what broke the record. The film stars Andy Samberg, Cristin Milioti, and J.K. Simmons and was acquired by NEON and Hulu at the festival. When carefree Nyles and reluctant maid of honor Sarah have a chance encounter at a Palm Springs wedding, things get complicated when they find themselves unable to escape the venue, themselves, or each other.I've always wanted to know what it was like to be a fly on the wall durning a bidding war at Sundance. In today's episode I take you through the improbable journey of this first-time feature filmmaker and his adventures of getting his film Palms Springs from the page to the Sundance record books.Enjoy my conversation with Max Barbakow.

This time-loop film had us going back and forth over what it really meant. It really threw us for... a loop... Next week we will be watching Eastern Promises (directed by David Cronenberg), so be sure to watch it this week in preparation. Or don't, it's your call. It is currently available on Peacock. The final film in our Disney-animation-and-remakes sub-season is the 2020 iteration of MULAN. After some reviews, we delve into discussions of Disney ‘humanisation' (sometimes, you just want bad guys to be bad guys), the fact that this movie is aimed at a very different audience from the original, the changes that are made to make this more of a human film, and how honour and ch'i (two big concepts here) mean very different things for different (gendered) characters. Next Up The next episode is our 200th — stay tuned to find out what we have planned for this, which may be something of a retrospective. Director Max Barbakow joins us on The Commentary Cast this week to talk about his film Palm Springs. Starring Andy Samberg, Cristin Milioti, and J.K. Simmons, Palm Springs gets us stuck in a time loop where two wedding guests develop a budding romance while living the same day over and over again.
Join us this week as we discuss the sci-fi rom-com 'Palm Springs', a directing debut by Max Barbakow, starring Andy Samberg, Cristin Milioti and J. K. Simmons. The set up of the film is a timeloop along the same lines as 'Groundhog Day', but we discuss whether or not the film breathes enough new life and energy into this increasingly common sci-fi sub-genre. We also chat about the 1981 classic Scottish coming-of-age comedy 'Gregory's Girl' by Bill Forsyth, 'Finding Jack Charlton', a 2020 documentary about the life of the legendary England footballer and Ireland manager and his remarkable influence on Ireland in general, and 'Italianamerican', a sweet little documentary made in 1974 by Martin Scorsese about his parents (including his mother's famous recipe for meatballs). The team gets together to talk about Max Barbakow's 2020 film, Palm Springs. The film stars Andy Samberg and Cristin Milioti and goes through their crazy adventure in a time loop! You do not want to miss out!
Oyez, oyez !

Director Max Barbakow and writer Andy Siara tell us how their therapeutic writing process and friendship made Palm Springs what it is, and was ultimately the most rewarding part of the process. And why the fact that no one gave a sh*t about them was, in a way, their greatest strength. In case you've been living in a time-loop cave, Palm Springs, starring Andy Samberg and Cristin Milioti, came out earlier this year after netting the biggest sale in Sundance history with a Hulu + Neon deal for $17,500,000.69 to acquire the film. The movie was released during the pandemic in July, which was a blessing in disguise: breaking out with a record-setting opening weekend on Hulu. Simmons. Acompañanos en este episodio.

Episode description jk lol but I have no idea what to put here it's a review of a movie duh
In the first episode of our by-popular-demand new biweekly format, we review five movies from the first half of July: David Dobkin's unexpectedly gentle musical comedy EUROVISION SONG CONTEST: THE STORY OF FIRE SAGA, Max Barbakow's hilarious and thought-provoking romcom PALM SPRINGS, Kelly Reichardt's tender ode to friendship FIRST COW, Hirokazu Kore-eda's French mother-daughter dramedy THE TRUTH, and Dawn Porter's important but lackluster documentary JOHN LEWIS: GOOD TROUBLE.
Josh is joined by recurring guest and fellow Lonely Island fan Hannah Couture to talk about “Palm Springs.” (Beginning-33:05) They discuss how first-time filmmakers Andy Siara and Max Barbakow made a movie that felt unlike other repeating day/time loop movies, the chemistry between Andy Samberg and Cristin Milioti, the bits of Lonely Island humor that find their way into the movie how it captures the mood of being a young person watching everyone else find happiness in life and much more! Then, they give their recent streaming recommendations (33:06-End).
