Dan & Paul scope out principles for statting out real people in D&D and other role-playing games. What do the standard ability scores really mean, anyway? How have they varied over editions of D&D across the years? And how can we compare and model real people in other games like Call of Cthulhu, Star Frontiers, and Fearful Ends? Kinanthropometry is defined as the study of human size, shape, proportion, composition, maturation, and gross function, in order to understand growth, exercise, performance, and nutrition. It is a scientific discipline that is concerned with the measurement of individuals in a variety of morphological perspectives, its application to movement and those factors which influence movement, including: components of body build, body measurements, proportions, composition, shape and maturation; motor abilities and cardiorespiratory capacities; physical activity including recreational activity as well as highly specialized sports performance. The predominant focus is upon obtaining detailed measurements upon the body composition of a given person. Kinanthropometry is the interface between human anatomy and movement. It is the application of a series of measurements made on the body and from these we can use the data that we gather directly or perform calculations using the data to produce various indices and body composition predictions and to measure and describe physique. Part 3 of our Start Frontiers homebrew rules playtest continues the story of S.C.U.M., the Splendid Company of Upstanding Mercenaries. They've made their way inside the Aramax One power facility to destroy the computer in the basement, only to discover some mercenaries have already broken in, disarmed the guards, and occupied the basement to do...something. Now they're making their way down the stairs to confront the other mercenaries. It's a confusing mess, isn't it? Art for this episode is by Brandon Weigel and Shaunmakes! This month we're back to a music release, and it's the intro theme from the Tales of Bob miniseries "Cowboy Bebob"! It's inspired by the music of Yoko Kanno and the Seatbelts from Cowboy Bebop, of course. You can hear Mike's friend Norman (from all the way back in high school!) at the beginning. Art for this episode is by Trevor a.k.a. @CosmicAmazing on Instagram.  Next week we'll be back with Part 2 of the Star Frontiers playtest.

Creation Corner: Hungry for more worldbuilding ideas? Joining us today is Josh Pinkerton, sometime guest DM and player on the Tales from the Glass-Guarded World podcast. In today's episode we talk about managing the precarious balance of creating new story in an existing world. Josh has done this with great skill in his appearances, and we talk about the how of it all. During this episode: Josh mentions a website that has inspired his past work: The Alexandrian, a site dedicated to retooling existing adventures to make them run more smoothly. Both Josh and Rhett appear in a current release on the Tales from the Glass-Guarded World feed, in which we playtest a rules revision of the Star Frontiers system published by TSR in the 80s. Check it out for some sci fi hijinks! To listen to Josh's notable guest DM appearance, you'll want to follow his Paxton and the Rug Buds series, which begins here. As a warning, you'll probably want to listen to the previous story in order, since these episodes build upon established events. It's well worth the listen! If you're interested in continuing the conversation, you can send your thoughts our way on Twitter, Instagram, or through our Discord server. We're rapidly approaching the end of TFTGGW, but we're taking a break from the main story for this amazing playtest of some new homebrew rules for the classic Star Frontiers role-playing game. Pink, Brandon, Pavel, and Rhett each play members of S.C.U.M., the Splendid Company of Upstanding Mercenaries as they undertake a very shady mission.  We think you'll really enjoy this three-part miniseries! At some point we'll have a Star Frontiers over on the Tales of Bob podcast, but first we have to iron out the wrinkles in the game itself.  Art for this episode is by Brandon Weigel and Shaunmakes! In this episode we go the distance on a couple great "letters from the homeowners association" dealing with all sorts of things like GMs altering player characters through encounter results, variable weapon damage, and the origin of the word "grok."  The center piece is the 1983 Star Frontiers adventure, "Sundown on Starmist." I want to warn you that I accidentally call the Sathar aliens the "Sraath" for the first half of the discussion (Sraath are the worm-like humanoidsI added to my Unnatural Selections monster book in homage to the Star Frontiers game-hence the verbal choke-up). If you are a French-speaker and interested in being involved with the charity gaming event mentioned by Edwin, below is a flyer about it.  We will attempt to get you more information as it becomes released. Thanks for all the write-ins, folks!  It really is amazing how much our audience interacts with the program -WE LOVE IT!

Ron Hubbard Illustrators of the Future Contest and was honored along with eleven other artists and twelve other writers at the Taglyan Complex in Hollywood, California on April 28th. She illustrated the story, "Moonlight and Funk" by Marianne Xenos who is a Writers of the Future winner herself. The illustration and story, along with the other writers' and illustrators' stories and art are published in the international bestselling anthology, L. Ron Hubbard Presents Writers of the Future Volume 39 which was officially released on May 16th. April Solomon was born in 1983 and raised in Laguna Beach, California. Since she was a small child, April has had a talent for drawing and painting. She would draw anything and everything that came into her imagination. Of all things, she drew dragons the most! Thankfully, her loving and encouraging family inspired her to embrace her love for the arts. She grew up around art. Her father's art studio was filled with all the delights a child could indulge. His bookshelves held stacks of art books containing illustrations from the old masters, the golden age illustrators, and even some fantasy art from the TSRs Dungeons and Dragons. Inspiration came in many forms. Fortunately it was everywhere! and so her career as a young artist began. Today April is an illustrator and fine artist who has earned her bachelor's degree in illustration at the Laguna College of Art and Design. April's passion for learning the old masterful techniques of traditional drawing and painting are precisely what inspires her work. Among her love for the fine arts is her unique appreciation for whimsical fantasy, which adorns every image of her portfolio. April's meticulous creature designs aim for what is known as “fantastic realism.” A clever, concise understanding of anatomy, plants, and mysterious textures weave their way into her illustrations, leaving the viewer guessing at origins, influences, and ancestry. April's work allows the viewer to dive imaginatively deeper, and reconsider whether dragons might be real or whether werewolves exist to stalk the streets at night. When not illustrating, April attends garage sales to unearth buried treasures, runs and lifts weights, or braves as many haunted attractions as possible during the month of October. The Contest, one of the most prestigious writing and illustrating competitions in the world, is currently in its 40th year and is judged by some of the premier names in speculative fiction. The Illustrators of the Future Contest judges include, Bob Eggleton (11 Chesley Awards and 7 Hugo Awards), Larry Elmore (Dungeons & Dragons book covers), Echo Chernik (graphic designs for major corporations including Celestial Seasonings tea packaging), Rob Prior (art for Spawn, Heavy Metal comics and Buffy the Vampire Slayer), Ciruelo (Eragon Coloring Book). The new TSR is in the news again and it never seems to be good news whenever they get press.  This week, we give our thoughts on TSR's lawsuit against Wizards of the Coast.  TSR, why not just make some good games? ** Update It seems that TSR has decided to stop moving forward with this lawsuit.*** TSR LLC's CEO Justin LaNasa has since updated the IndieGoGo page claiming that he will formally try again.  As for WOTC, their lawyers have officially gone on the offensive. In addition to the aforementioned issue with Star Frontiers, WOTC is suing TSR LLC for the ongoing use of the TSR logo now associated with LaNasa's company. Since WOTC owns this specific logo and TSR has been wrongfully using it, there is a legal precedent for fraud. Worse still, the body of evidence for this can be found in TSR's own filed complaints against WOTC. In fairness, trademark fraud isn't the kind of case that leads to serious jail time, but considering the longstanding antagonism between the two companies, this can lead to serious financial distress for TSR LLC. We're back in Texas with Terry Thomas of Tabletop Plus for Episode 45 of Tales from the Fandom. After finding Terry and his company on Instagram and liking what I saw, I reached out to him and we connected back in October.  If you are into roleplaying games or board games, this podcast is definitely geared to you. We first talk about roleplaying games, hitting on games such as Dungeons and Dragons, Pathfinder, Star Frontiers, Diplomacy and a game called Tephra, a steampunk rpg.  We also hit on Savage Worlds and the Star Wars RPG by Fantasy Flight.  We also talk about getting kids into RPG's early and how it definitely changes the dynamic of the game. We move from books and dice to board games next, and not in the traditional sense as we hit on games such as Settlers of Catan, Arkham Horror, Bloodbowl and more.  We talk about their rise to prominence from the late 90's to present day. From there, Terry talks to me about being on the other side of the industry with his company, Tabletop Plus.  He talks about getting into the gaming business with the tabletop gaming enhancements that he does. Terry talks about his product, costs associated with it and the benefits that it adds to a game.
