The relationship between immigrant and second-generation churches has—to put it lightly— been complex. Language and cultural barriers make things lead to misunderstandings and disagreements. Many churches have stories of conflicts over vision, worship times, and lack of parking. But it is possible for first and second-generation churches to worship together. At SOLA Network, we want to highlight the stories that show us new ways to approach old problems. We want to encourage churches and leaders to think differently about “the way things are” and find ways to pursue the kingdom of God together. We are proud to present an interview that Steve Chang, SOLA Council chairman, conducted with Pastor Paul Kim and Pastor John Cha of Open Door Presbyterian Church in Herndon. Pastor Paul Kim is the lead pastor of the Korean-speaking Congregation, while Pastor John Cha was the previous lead pastor of the English-speaking Congregation and is now the Congregational Care pastor. In their wide-ranging conversation, the group discusses the journey ODPC made in becoming “1 Vision, 2 Households, 1 Family.” They talk about how the leaders of both congregations interact regularly, how the two lead pastors share power, giving the English-speaking congregation the 9:30am worship slot, their mission as a church, how to appreciate what the other congregation is doing, and plans for the future of the church. Speaking to a live audience, Pastor Steve Chang spoke about the dynamics that pastors may encounter as they lead in the immigrant church. His hope was to help pastors to better guard their hearts and navigate some of the cultural nuances in an immigrant-led church. Pastor Steve discussed three potential problems or “perils” for pastors: 1. The problem of competing issues 2. The problem of uneven relationships 3. In 52 A.D., the Apostle Thomas came to India to spread the good news of Jesus Christ. This led to the formation of Christian churches throughout several Indian states. Immigrants founded those churches in America, leading to the creation of Mar Thoma churches and other Indian Christian churches throughout the United States. As the children of Indian immigrants grew up, the second-generation Indian American church and multiethnic churches began to percolate. Pastor Thomas is one of those second-generation Indian American church planters. In a conversation with SOLA Network's Steve Chang, he talks about the history of Christianity in India, the Indian American church, and the power of the Indian diaspora. He also talks about the Advance Initiative, of which he is a co-founder, whose mission is to catalyze a global movement of gospel-centered multiethnic churches planted by or among Indians. Reality LA Audio Podcast: Bible Teaching

We both long to be known and fear to be known, we want to be known because we want to be loved, we fear being known because we fear rejection, and we only allow others to know a filtered version of ourselves. But the omniscience of God, along with the sacrificial love of Jesus Christ, can give us the intimacy and security that we yearn for. Guest preacher Steve Chang preaches a sermon from Psalm 139.

The magic of Copa Vida (Spanish for "Cup of Life") is how they roast their own beans and serve you amazing coffee in three unique ways: "Go", "Enjoy" and "Experience"; each are designed to give you the perfect coffee experience - and it really works! We chat with STEVE CHANG (Founder, President, CEO and most importantly, the "Certified Professional Appreciator"!), and he tells us his secret recipe to making them one of the top coffee shops in Los Angeles and why you have to try it for yourself! Add an extensive tea menu and an in-house chef that has developed one of the most amazing Avocado Toasts on the planet (not to mention their Croque Madame), and you have every reason you need to visit one of their six Southern California locations (don't worry, they're growing fast and may be near you soon!) We visit both their roastery and their Pasadena café location to experience how it all comes together. And while we enjoy their famous Cortado and their "Experience" Alaka Natural Ethiopian pour over, we also talk about our week. Myles helps his 8-year-old with an art project and is awarded a sympathy tap on the back. And he shares what happens when his 6-year-old is Assistant Principal of the day. Jason's son pushes his way into the world of Spiderman but reconsiders when Spidey and MJ kiss and keep kissing (you should've seen his face!). Whether you're in a hurry on your morning commute and need coffee stat, or you want to enjoy the perfect cup of single origin coffee, join us at Copa Vida for a freshly roasted cup of life! Copa Vida in Pasadena opened August 1st 2013. Steve Chang, founder and visionary of Copa Vida in Pasadena, grew up in a family of small business owners. After selling a significant noodle manufacturing business he had a chance to step back and think about his dreams. Retiring with a coffee shop had been a point of discussion with his wife over the years. They decided to go for it and began traveling to learn and experience coffee shops in Venice, Rome, Seattle and Portland along with coffee farms in Costa Rica. Up and coming for Copa Vida is their own line of small batch roasted coffee. This facility is five minutes from the Pasadena cafe and is currently roasting the True Bean brand which they own and will continue to deliver alongside the Copa Vida brand. Plans are in the works to open a second Copa Vida in San Diego by Petco Park.
