To be human is to be a liturgical creature – a person of rhythm, habit and practice. That is why worship is at the heart of Christian discipleship. Christian transformation isn't just manifested in what you think or what you believe – but what you do – and what those practices do to you. Could it be that worship, in the truly Biblical sense, goes far beyond just music on a Sunday morning? What might it look like for worship to become an ‘all-of-live' endeavour. In this episode, we're joined by Steve McCready as we reframe worship.

It's a podcast swap! Steve McCready is our guest host, and I'm at the guest microphone. Steve McCready is the host of The Sensitive Rebel podcast. He is here to interview me about life before, since, and lessons learned from my involvement in the self help industry and my involvement in “that sweat lodge.” Over on the Sensitive Rebel, you will find an episode called Laura Tucker Helps Steve Free His Inner Guru. Steve McCready is a coach with a background as a psychotherapist. Steve and I share many interests including psychology, photography, and creativity. After a couple of Zooms geeking out on art and gear, we had a “what if” conversation about interviewing each other. To shake things up, we decided to be guests on our own shows! The timing is serendipitous. The 12th anniversary of the Sedona sweat lodge was October 8th. A dozen years later, I'm still peeling back layers of this experience and sharing them, but mostly on other podcasts! Steve's background as a therapist enables him to hone in on challenging topics with empathy. He speaks with authority to their impact on psychology and mental health, making him the perfect host for this conversation. No joke, by the time we finished, I was tempted to title this episode “Would Someone Please Just Give Me a Red Flag?!?” Conversation highlights: Why I'm rebelling against the status quo in the self help industry.Cult dynamics and toxic leaders in our current social environment. The twists and turns of my journey that led me to “that sweat lodge.”Creativity and photography - learning the rules in order to break them.Societal pressure on women at certain ages from the patriarchal status quo.The real secret of the North American self help movement. It's steeped in privilege. The rapacious nature of “sell them what they want, give them what you think they need.”The clarity that's come this past year, learning about indoctrination and cult dynamics.Recognizing when we are getting swept away by our feelings, so we can actually see the red flags waving in our faces. Mentioned in this episode: Thank you, Steve for being a kind and empathetic host. We are surrounded by people, especially during this social media era, yet we still feel lonely. How can we deal with loneliness as adult men? After 2 years of social distancing, our friendships are definitely taking a toll. God is relational – in fact, Jesus is a man of hospitality. He invited and welcomed people, particularly the outsiders, to eat and drink with him. Jesus asked a lot of questions, taught them the truth with grace and forgiveness. He created a “safe space” for people to share openly and confessed without fear, and he was incredibly patient with them. In this episode, Steven McCready talks about the challenges men face when it comes to conforming to close friendships. He reminds us of the root and harsh reality of loneliness and the gift and grace of friendship from Jesus Christ.  Steven encourages men to grow their relationship with God, then take the initiative and be intentional with friendships in your life.

Today we got to talk to Steve about how he made the jump from systems engineer in IT to being a therapist.   Steve McCready got his BA from Brown University in American Studies. After graduating and not knowing what he wanted to do, Steve focused on his interest in computers and forged a career in IT. He climbed the corporate ladder as a systems engineer but became frustrated that he wasn’t actually helping his customers. After his own personal experience in therapy, Steve realized that his passion truly lied in helping people on a one-on-one basis through counseling. He returned to school at the University of San Francisco to get his master’s degree in Marriage and Family Therapy. And now, for over 15 years, Steve McCready has been working as a therapist, focusing his practice on helping people who are ‘too nice’ get the clarity, courage, and confidence they need to stand up for themselves and live happy, successful, and fulfilling lives.   Today we talked to Steve about how he figured out what he would do next when he wanted to leave his career in IT, how he pushed back the false narratives he created about himself, and how we can get better at literally anything that interests us.     Here is what we chat about in this episode: Why Steve felt unfulfilled in his role as a systems engineer even though he is interested in computers and electronics How he moved past the negative internal voices that told him he couldn’t do anything else How therapy helped him personally and also exposed him to a new career path How changing a career when you’re a little older can be a huge benefit How to get over the stories we have created about ourselves What the difference between therapy and coaching is How we can get better at any endeavor if we just work at it.     Resources mentioned in this episode: Dead Poets Society   Where to find Steve: www.stevemccready.com steve@stevemccready.com www.limbicvisions.com   Follow along for more: www.lessonsfromaquitter.com Facebook Instagram Twitter
