Welcome back to My Seminary Life and another edition of Fish FryDays. In today's devotional, we circle back to the concept of being content and seeking a glorious God by having nothing. I reflect on Matthew 5:1-3 and a quote from AW Tozer on that verse. I also bring up the spiritual benefit of minimalism and how Lent is more than just fasting but acts of charity as well. Your comments are welcome! Send a text my way! There are many topics in Scripture that can lead to controversy and unfortunately separation from true Christians when we should really still be together as one in spite of many of our differences. Certainly, one of the greatest topics of battles through the years has been the issue of election, which was basically defined and codified in John Calvin's famous work "The Institutes of the Christian Religion." This episode of 2Days Denarius focuses on a short devotional by the famous late minister and author A. W. Tozer, in which he, in short and strait order, laid out a small case in favor of God's choosing grace and dependence on Him over a man-made decision process in one's salvation. This podcast graciously covers this topic from some biblical and historical viewpoints. We should never afraid to look at difficult topics in Scripture. They are there for us to study with open heart and mind, through the illuminating power of the Holy Spirit. 160: Do you Have your Priorities in the Right Order? We are entering into a new year and God is ready to do a new thing in you and your life. How can you make sure your priorities are in the order that God intends? In 2025, let's focus on what matters and stop focusing on all the things that do not matter. Let's talk about what our priorities should be and how to keep them in the right order. 1. Seek first the Kingdom of God (Matthew 6:33). AW Tozer says, "When God is exalted to His proper place in our lives 1000 problems are solved all at once." This is truth. We must stop seeking our comfort, our way, our desires. Our top priority is to do the Father's will. How do we do that? We are to be about our Father's business, not our own business. We are to surrender to the point that our desires line up with God's desires for us. This requires sitting at the feet of Jesus. 2. Seek to fulfill the plan and the purpose that God has for you. (Jeremiah 29:11) God has a purpose and a plan for you. What you are doing should line up with God's plan and purpose for you. There are many good things that you can do, but the things outside His plan for you are distractions. Spend some time seeking God's plan and purpose for you. How do we do that? - We begin by loving the Lord with all our heart, soul, and mind. (Matthew 22:37) - Make sure to identify any idols in your life. The little g gods get in the way of you becoming who God is calling you to become. (1 John 5:21) Ask God to reveal anything you put before Him. We invite you to check out our courses and coaching programs. Let 2025 be the year to really get your life, your purpose, and your plan in order. Let's make sure that our thoughts and our desires line up with His thoughts and His desires for us. It's time! From Genesis to Revelation, generosity is a resounding theme in the Bible. The ultimate example of this is captured in Romans 6:23:“For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.”As children of a generous God, Christians are called to reflect His generosity in their lives. Let's explore the biblical foundation of generosity, its spiritual significance, and some timeless wisdom from godly leaders to inspire you on your journey. The Biblical Foundation of GenerosityThe Bible paints a vivid picture of what it means to live generously:Sharing What We Have: Jesus instructed His followers, saying, “Whoever has two tunics is to share with him who has none, and whoever has food is to do likewise” (Luke 3:10–11).Giving Cheerfully: The Apostle Paul teaches that generosity should come from the heart: “Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver” (2 Corinthians 9:7).Reflecting God's Character: Psalm 112 reveals that generosity is more than an action—it's a reflection of righteousness and godly character.Generosity is a response to God's abundant grace flowing from a heart transformed by His love.Wisdom on Generosity: 10 Timeless QuotesThroughout history, men and women of faith have offered profound insights into the spiritual significance of generosity. Here are ten inspiring quotes to challenge and encourage you:1. C.S. Lewis“I do not believe one can settle how much we ought to give. I am afraid the only safe rule is to give more than we can spare.”2. John Wesley“Do all the good you can, by all the means you can, in all the ways you can, in all the places you can, at all the times you can, to all the people you can, as long as ever you can.”3. A.W. Tozer“Any temporal possession can be turned into everlasting wealth…Whatever is given to Christ is immediately touched with immortality.”4. Billy Graham“Tell me what you think about money, and I will tell you what you think about God, for these two are closely related. A man's heart is closer to his wallet than anything else.”5. Chip Ingram“Giving is an action; generosity is a matter of the heart. You can give and not be generous, but you can't be generous without giving.”6. Randy Alcorn“Giving affirms Christ's lordship. It dethrones me and exalts Him.”7. Saint Augustine of Hippo“Charity is a virtue which…when our affections are perfectly ordered…unites us to God…for by it we love Him.”8. Amy Carmichael“You can give without loving, but you cannot love without giving.”9. J.I. Packer“The measure of all love is its giving. The measure of the love of God is the cross of Christ.”10. Jesus Christ“Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you” (Luke 6:38).Living Generously: A Call to ActionGenerosity is not just about sharing wealth—it's about trusting God to meet our needs as we meet the needs of others. It's an act of worship and a reflection of God's love in our lives. We give because God first gave to us—our life, salvation, and every blessing we enjoy. Let these biblical truths and timeless quotes inspire you to live generously, not out of obligation but from a heart filled with gratitude.May your generosity glorify God and bless others, transforming ordinary possessions into eternal treasures. On Today's Program, Rob Answers Listener Questions:I'm a newlywed, expecting our first child. What if the path of faith meant embracing the unknown, where logic and divine promises seem to clash? Join us on this spiritual journey as we explore the lives of biblical figures like Samuel, Moses, Gideon, and Abraham, who exemplify the art of listening, trusting, and obeying God's call. We promise you'll discover how to tap into the profound strength and courage necessary to navigate life's uncertainties by trusting in something greater than yourself. The story of Abraham serves as our cornerstone, illustrating the profound nature of faith through obedience. Our conversation takes a deep dive into Abraham's ultimate test, where he was asked to sacrifice his son Isaac, highlighting the tension between human understanding and divine guidance. Reflecting on the radical acts of faith demonstrated by Abraham, we challenge ourselves—and you—to respond swiftly and obediently to God's call, no matter how illogical it may seem.Lastly, we tackle the profound distinction between temptation and testing, revealing how true faith is shown through prompt action. Inspired by AW Tozer's wisdom, we discuss the essence of spiritual maturity, which lies not in knowledge but in our willingness to act upon God's guidance. As we near the communion table, let us be reminded of Jesus' ultimate act of trust and obedience, urging us to ponder what God may be asking of us today, and encouraging us to take that next bold step in faith, supported by his unwavering grace.Support the showIf you enjoyed this episode, consider subscribing to Madison Church on your favorite podcast platform. What comes into our minds when we think about God is the most important thing about us. ~AW Tozer
The Vine is beginning a new series exploring the meaning and power in the different names of God. Today, Mark begins by discussing the name YHWH. thevineaustin.org REFLECTION QUESTIONS: 1. Consider the quote from AW Tozer- "We tend by a secret law of the soul to move toward our mental image of God." How do you see this pull in your life? 2. Read the conversation between Moses and God in Exodus 3:1-14. What stands out to you today? 3. Consider the different possible translations of the name YHWH. What is the meaning and power in all the different tenses of this name? 4. Read the end to Jesus' prayer in John 17:25-26. What do we see of YHWH in Jesus' words? 5. As some in the Hebrew tradition believe YHWH is also the sound of a breath, what meaning would it be to enact breath prayers in your life?
“Faith is not a once-done act, but a continuous gaze of the heart at the Triune God. Believing, then, is directing the hearts' attention to Jesus. It is lifting the mind to 'behold the Lamb of God,' and never ceasing that beholding for the rest of our lives.” AW Tozer

On this episode of the FTC Podcast, Jared Wilson and Ross Ferguson discuss the ins and outs of ministry brokenness. AW Tozer once said, "Before God blesses a man greatly, he must hurt him deeply." Is that true? How does such thinking play out in terms of leading with transparency, honesty, and confession? What does it look like for ministers to lead with, from, and even *to* brokenness?
The Vine is beginning a 12 week-long series on peacemaking. In this first sermon, Mark shares an overview of the series and discusses how we must begin by finding peace with God. www.thevineaustin.org REFLECTION QUESTIONS: 1. Mark shares two different definitions of peace. What are they, and what are the ramifications of each definition? 2. What would you say undercuts your peace with God? 3. How would you describe the framework you were given to understand God? What was helpful? What has been problematic? 4. Read Psalm 16:11. Read it a second time and replace “presence” with “face". How does it read differently? 5. Read Numbers 6:24-26. What is the power displayed in God's face? 6. Mark offers an alternative to AW Tozer's quote. "What comes into our minds when we think about God is the most important thing about us.” Instead, "what comes to God's mind when God thinks of us is the most important thing about us." Why might that be the case?

In this week's episode we sat down with Shane & Shane to talk about the development, mission, and future of The Worship Initiative. Plus, the Shane's unpack the inspiration and the heart behind some of their amazing new songs for the church like “You've Already Won”, “All Sufficient Merit,” and more. Book & Resources recommendations mentioned: Knowledge of The Holy by A.W Tozer The Hiding Place by Corrie Ten Boom & Elizabeth Sherrill & John Sherrill Treasury Of David by Charles H. Spurgeon Morning and Evening by Charles H. Spurgeon
In November of 1928, A.W. Tozer accepted a pastoral position at the Southside Alliance Church in Chicago, a move that launched a ministry career that would eventually impact thousands. A central theme of Tozer's work was recovering a sense of the holiness of God. In his book The Knowledge of the Holy, Tozer wrote, The low view of God entertained almost universally among Christians is the cause of a hundred lesser evils everywhere among us. A whole new philosophy of the Christian life has resulted from this one basic error in our religious thinking. Tozer's best-known quote is a fundamental premise of a truly Christian worldview: “What comes into our minds when we think about God is the most important thing about us.” Years ago, Chuck Colson urged his friend, author and speaker Ken Boa, to write condensed, accessible introductions to the greatest works of literature and theology. Boa, one of the finest Christian thinkers of our generation, accepted the challenge. In a Breakpoint commentary, Chuck commented on A.W. Tozer's The Knowledge of the Holy, and Dr. Ken Boa's introduction: Dr. Ken Boa speaks of A.W. Tozer as a man who “understood the ways of God.” That understanding is amply demonstrated in Tozer's classic book The Knowledge of the Holy. “This is really a meditative and a devotional approach to the attributes of God,” Boa says. Those include more attributes than we're used to thinking about all at once. For instance, Tozer discusses God's omniscience and omnipotence as well as His love and mercy. But Tozer doesn't just show us the reality of those attributes; he also shows how they work together to form a harmonious whole. They are not contradictory, but complementary. But our view of God, Tozer argues, is often “distorted” or “diminished” because we have embraced the prevailing mindset of our culture and imposed that mindset upon Scripture. So, we find ourselves unable even to begin to comprehend concepts like His holiness, power, and majesty. (Keep in mind, by the way, that Tozer wrote this nearly 50 years ago. The man wasn't called a prophet for nothing.) Tozer's desire was to expand our vision and thus our capacity to worship God rightly. If we fail to do this, Boa says, that's when our understanding of God becomes distorted, and we move away from Him. “Imperfect and ignoble thoughts about God,” Tozer believed, are responsible for all our errors in doctrine and in faith. Thus, he defines idolatry as “assuming that God is other than He is.” When you look at it that way, you can see just how widespread idolatry has become in our day and how much havoc it has created within the Church. Boa connects this kind of thinking to the modern prosperity gospel, which tends to turn our prayers into “strategy sessions” rather than true communication with God. Paradoxically, Tozer acknowledges the “incomprehensibility” of God, even as he is helping us to better understand His attributes. When we draw closer to God, you see, we begin to understand just how much greater He is than anything we can grasp. Our instinct is to make God into something “manageable” and “controllable.” That was the sin of the Garden—to be like God. But if you could do that, you wouldn't need Him. So instead of trying to manage or control God, we must surrender ourselves and place our trust in Him even though we can't fully understand Him. And when we do this, we are not groping in the dark, for as Tozer tells us, “[God] in condescending love has by revelation declared certain things to be true of Himself. These we call His attributes.” He has provided enough knowledge of these, Tozer says, “to satisfy our intellects and ravish our hearts.” For more resources to live like a Christian in this cultural moment, go to breakpoint.org.

Greed - a selfish and excessive desire for more.1. It covets `things' with a deep and fierce passion. The pronouns `my' and `mine' look innocent enough in print, but their constant and universal use is significant. They express the real nature of the old Adamic man better than a thousand volumes of theology could do. They are verbal symptoms of our deep disease. The roots of our hearts have grown down into things, and we dare not pull up one rootlet lest we die. Things have become necessary to us, a development never originally intended. God's gifts now take the place of God, and the whole course of nature is upset by the monstrous substitution.”

In our world that is full of 'sound bites' and 3 minute sermon reels, it's important that we not lose the foundational truths of who God is. That takes diligence, time and purposeful study. AW Tozer in his book Knowledge of the Holy states that '...no religion has ever been greater than its idea of God. Worship is pure or base as the worshiper entertains high or low thoughts of God.' He also claims that ...'What comes into our minds when we think about God is the most important thing about us.' Come and share some thoughts on knowing God. Taking a stroll down some Ancient Paths of spiritual truths is not only helpful during these tricky days, but an absolute necessity to make sure we are not worshiping a god of our own design.
"What happens if I ask you if the way you respond in times of stress, or pain, or loss, support what you claim to be your picture of God? When life goes wrong, do you ever wonder if God is punishing you? Do you truly feel that God is always for your? Or a bit against you? What does your prayer life suggest about your true picture of God? How about your level of anxiety? Your relationships? How you feel about yourself? AW Tozer wrote, “What comes into our minds when we think about God is the most important thing about us.” The truth is we can think we know a lot about God and His Word, give all the right answers, and yet—because our stated belief doesn't match our long-term persistent experience of God, we will live out a completely different picture of God than the one we say we believe."

AW Tozer once wrote: “What comes into our minds when we think about God is the most important thing about us. The history of mankind will probably show that no people has ever risen above its religion, and man's spiritual history will positively demonstrate that no religion has ever been greater than its idea of God."In this episode, Dominic shares a talk he gave in Oregon, unpacking the topic of God's character and nature. How do we know this God? What is he like? What is his character and nature?Pursuing Faith is a listener supported non-profit. Today we honor Father's, but most of all we honor our Father in Heaven, Hallowed Be His Name! Herbert shared from the book by A.W. Tozer, “The Knowledge of the Holy”, telling how often the human heart is prone to the sin of Idolatry, something God truly hates. According to the book, the idolatrous heart can dishonor God by assuming that God is other than He really is. We tend to substitute the “true God” for one made after our own likeness. That is Idolatry! There is great importance in having a “proper view of God”, and a “proper view of ourselves as children or God.” Hebert used the Parable of the Talents in Matthew 25:14-30 as a great example of how having a wrong view of God can lead us astray, and ultimately away from God all together. Listen to learn how to view our Father in Heaven rightly, and give Him all honor and glory due His Name!

Isaiah 6:1–13 | God is holy. Those three words have weight. In the words of AW Tozer, "God's holiness is not simply the best we know infinitely bettered. We know nothing like the divine holiness. It stands apart, unique, unapproachable, incomprehensible and unattainable. The natural [person] is blind to it. They may fear God's power and admire His wisdom, but His holiness they cannot even imagine. Only the Spirit of the Holy One can impart to the human spirit the knowledge of the holy.” Throw the book of Isaiah, let's approach the unapproachable, attempt to comprehend the incomprehensible and attain the unattainable.

Tozer_____________________________Show Notes:SUMMARY The conversation starts with discussing the affections a Christian should have towards God, such as thirsting for Him, being satisfied in Him, and clinging to Him. The conversation then moves on to answer the question of how to know if one is saved. The answer is not based on one's feelings, but on the truth of Scripture. The book of 1 John is recommended to help people understand the truth of being a Christian. This book tells us that we can know if we are a Christian if we understand our need of a savior, our sin, and our love for other believers. The conversation discussed how people can be sure that they are saved and how to know what books of the Bible talk about becoming a Christian. It was mentioned that reading the Gospel of John and the book of Romans can help with understanding what a Christian is. Donald Whitney's book, How Can I Be Sure that I'm a Christian?, was also discussed as it is a great source to understand the doctrine of assurance of salvation. The idea that assurance of salvation rests primarily on the character of God, the work of Jesus Christ, and the truth of God's promises was highlighted.Pastor Scott shared his experience of recommending a book called Assurance of Salvation by John MacArthur to a couple who were struggling with their faith. He emphasized that it's important to base our salvation on what the Scripture teaches, not on our own experiences. He then recommended another book, The Pursuit of God by AW Tozer, which has been very influential to him. Tozer argued that sound Bible exposition is an imperative in the Church of the Living God, and that it is not mere words that nourish the soul, but God himself. Pastor Scott warned readers of The Pursuit of God to be careful of interpreting Chapter 6 too literally, as Tozer was not arguing for just taking a walk and hearing the voice of God, but rather immersing ourselves in the Word of God and hearing God speak through it. He encouraged readers to find someone else to read the book with and challenge each other.
Have you ever received a medical diagnosis saying you'd get worse if you don't make changes? What about other areas of your life…things aren't going well and they'll only get worse if something doesn't change? As we continue our series, 7 Deadly Sins of Suburbia, JP teaches us about apathy by studying Hebrews 5 & 6.KEY TAKEAWAYS-People do not drift toward holiness. Apart from grace-driven effort, people do not gravitate toward godliness, prayer, obedience to Scripture, faith, and delight in the Lord. We drift toward compromise and call it tolerance; we drift toward disobedience and call it freedom; we drift toward superstition and call it faith. We cherish the indiscipline of lost self-control and call it relaxation; we slouch toward prayerlessness and delude ourselves into thinking we have escaped legalism; we slide toward godlessness and convince ourselves we have been liberated. - D.A. Carson-The church will be at the height of its heresy when you call obedience legalism. - AW Tozer-If you go through life doing only what you feel like, you will only grow dysfunctional. You will not grow as a disciple of Christ by only following your feelings.-You could get to heaven and live a completely spiritually impotent life while on earth.-So many Christians are not living the Christian life. They are not a threat to the enemy, and they are simply drifting toward death.-The Bible teaches the exact opposite of apathy and comfort. It teaches to embrace hardships and challenges and discipline.-Apathy: A resistance to spiritual growth.-No Christian is exempt from living out the call of 2 Timothy 2:2: The things you have heard from me in the presence of many witnesses, entrust to faithful people who will teach others also.-We fight apathy by growing as a healthy disciple.-Disciples make other disciples, and all Christians are disciples. A “disciple making disciple” is redundant.-May we never be a people that is more American than we are Christian.-You don't go to the gym to be entertained, you go to workout (to change). Similarly, you don't go to church to be entertained, you go to be changed. To become more like Jesus.-We fight apathy with a steady diet of God's Word.-At some point, Christians must outgrow a diet of only devotionals. They must learn to read and study the Bible on their own.-If reading your Bible is hard, that doesn't make it wrong or bad. Going to the gym is also hard…you go to grow, and you only grow when it's hard.-If you take pictures of a tree one year apart, you won't see much of a difference. If you take pictures of a tree 20-years apart, there will be a huge difference. Mostly, in a way you can't even see: deep, strong roots that are the foundation and strength of the tree and it's growth.-There has never been a person of faith—let alone great faith—who doesn't pray.-We fight apathy by exercising our faith.-As you exercise your faith, sin will become more and more repulsive to you. You won't stop sinning on this side of death, but it will become less attractive.-We don't work for our salvation, we work from our salvation.-If you drift toward apathy, one of two things will be true: you will die and go to hell (you were never a Christian to begin with), or, you will get to the end of your life and realize you completely wasted if.MENTIONED OR RECOMMENDED RESOURCES-Suggested Scripture study: Hebrews 5:11-6:8; 1 Timothy 4:7-8; 2 Timothy 2:2-Sermon: Entitlement
