Anyone can be famous. Not everyone can wait a lifetime. From hammering it with the ‘gods of rock' to heroin diaries, white line fevers and the inevitable ghost written My Story, it would seem that every gnarled old pop star has had a crack at the rock and roll memoir. Wrong-side-of-the-tracks childhood? Check. Abusive stepdad? Check. Salvation with the band followed by booze, sex, acrimonious rows, near death experiences, sobriety and, eventually, religion. Yeah, I think we get the picture. But what about rock's also rans? The no hopers. The ones who never even got as far as a record deal. Shouldn't these less-feted performers with their doomed musical adventures and dashed hopes of super stardom be allowed to tell their tale too? So here's a real rock memoir. An honest, warts and all portrayal of what it's like to fall in love with music and start your own teenage band (or indeed several bands) spanning the eras of glam, punk, new wave and 80s pop, right up to the so-called ‘second summer of love' in 1988. Whatever happened to the teenage dream? Find out by joining guitarist and songwriter Dan with his band Stranger Than Paradise as they chart their rise to the top alongside a cast of outrageous characters and oh, so many disapproving grown-ups. Get ready for a no holds barred, tragi-comic ride through the euphoric triumphs and near misses of raw creativity and joyous music making.

Aquarium Drunkard - SIDECAR (TRANSMISSIONS) - Podcast

This week on the show, we're so pleased to welcome John Lurie. Perhaps you know him from his work in films like Stranger Than Paradise, Down By Law, Paris Texas, or The Last Temptation of Christ; or maybe you know him better for his music—groups like The Lounge Lizards, his trailblazing avant-garde jazz unit, or his fictional bluesman persona Marvin Pontiac, or the John Lurie National Orchestra. Or maybe you know him from his pioneering and singular television shows, 1991's surreal nature program Fishing With John, or the more recent Painting With John, which ran on HBO from 2021-2023.  This week, he joins host Jason P. Woodbury for a freewheeling chat, his book, The History of Bones: A Memoir, his Hollywood adventures, and Music From Painting With John, which drops via Royal Potato Family on March 15th. For heads, by heads. Aquarium Drunkard is powered by its patrons. Keep the servers humming and help us continue doing it by pledging your support via our Patreon page. Transmissions is part of the Talkhouse Podcast Network. Join us next week for a conversation with Elizabeth Nelson of The Paranoid Style.

In 1987, Robert Townsend co-wrote, directed, starred in and self-financed (using his savings and credit cards) “Hollywood Shuffle” as a reaction against the lack of opportunities for black actors at the time. 36 years later, the film stands alongside “Stranger Than Paradise,” “She's Gotta Have It,” and “sex, lies, and videotape” as a classic of the independent film movement and has been newly released on Blu-ray by the Criterion Collection. Townsend sat down with Toolkit to talk about the “dark ages” of 1980s independent film, how he turned his frustrations into the raw material of hilarious farce, and how the lessons learned on “Hollywood Shuffle” continue to fuel his successful directing career.

“I Hate Memory” Born in Budapest, Eszter Balint relocated to the United States and as a ten year old and found herself in New York living with the avant-garde Squat Theatre troupe, which was founded by her dad. Being surrounded by artists was no new thing for the violin-playing actress, who came from generations of artists. Her father was also a poet, her grandfather was a renowned visual artist and her great grandfather was one of the premier intellectuals and art critics at the turn of the century in Hungary. Balint acted in the troupe and living amongst writers, painters, actors and visual artists had an instant effect on her sensibility and her career path. In other words, it wasn't likely she was going to be a realtor. By 15 she played violin on a song produced by Basquiat and not long after, she started appearing in movies like Jim Jarmusch's Stranger Than Paradise, Woody Allen's Shadows and Fog, Trees Lounge and The Linguini Incident. She also had a several episode arc on Louie CKs sitcom “Louie." She's put out a handful of staggeringly great solo albums, including classics like Mud and Airless Midnight and her new one, I Hate Memory is a song cycle that explores Balint's trajectory from communist Hungary to the vibrant non-stop life of lower Manhattan in the early '80s. This is such a stirring song cycle it gave rise to the anti-musical version that was staged at Manhattan's beloved Joe's Pub. The record rings with poeticism, artistry and conviction. It's evocative, sonorous and truly unforgettable work. www.eszterbalint.com www.bombshellradio.com Stereo Embers www.stereoembersmagazine.com www.alexgreenonline.com IG: @emberspodcast
