Welcome to another episode of Side Projects. Today we welcome back Eszter Balint and Charming Disaster's Ellia Bisker & Jeff Morris. If you listen on a fairly regular basis, you might notice that I like many different genres of music. One area that I was never drawn to was musical theater. Most of it seemed too campy and over the top. That's why I asked these specific guests to join me for this episode. Eszter has a production in the works, based on her story and Charming Disaster use some theatrical elements in their performances. So if any of my past guests could ease me into this, it would be these guys. WHat I learned is that THEY aren't exactly huge fans of musical theater, either; BUT…that there is a distinction between musical theater and music AND theater. This show is full of a lot of things, like information, fun, and also extra noises. Some of it was ambient, some was me forgetting to turn off my notifications when we all connected. Check out the latest Charming Disaster album Super Natural History. Go to charmingdisaster.com to pick it up or check out their socials. On today's show, Charley Deppner talks with incredible violinist and actress (Stranger than Paradise, The Dead Don't Die) Eszter Balint and Orlando, Florida Public Art Coordinator Pat Greene, who enjoy a discussion of terror, punk rock, and the duality of musical genius. Listen for new tracks from Osees' album A Foul Form and Tianna Esperanza's Terror, two songs from Habibi's Anywhere But Here re-release, and "The First Day" and "Second Avenue" from Eszter Balint's I Hate Memory!, — with the exclamation point!
“I Hate Memory” Born in Budapest, Eszter Balint relocated to the United States and as a ten year old and found herself in New York living with the avant-garde Squat Theatre troupe, which was founded by her dad. Being surrounded by artists was no new thing for the violin-playing actress, who came from generations of artists. Her father was also a poet, her grandfather was a renowned visual artist and her great grandfather was one of the premier intellectuals and art critics at the turn of the century in Hungary. Balint acted in the troupe and living amongst writers, painters, actors and visual artists had an instant effect on her sensibility and her career path. In other words, it wasn't likely she was going to be a realtor. By 15 she played violin on a song produced by Basquiat and not long after, she started appearing in movies like Jim Jarmusch's Stranger Than Paradise, Woody Allen's Shadows and Fog, Trees Lounge and The Linguini Incident. She also had a several episode arc on Louie CKs sitcom “Louie." She's put out a handful of staggeringly great solo albums, including classics like Mud and Airless Midnight and her new one, I Hate Memory is a song cycle that explores Balint's trajectory from communist Hungary to the vibrant non-stop life of lower Manhattan in the early '80s. This is such a stirring song cycle it gave rise to the anti-musical version that was staged at Manhattan's beloved Joe's Pub. The record rings with poeticism, artistry and conviction. It's evocative, sonorous and truly unforgettable work. www.eszterbalint.com www.bombshellradio.com Stereo Embers www.stereoembersmagazine.com www.alexgreenonline.com IG: @emberspodcast
My guest is Eszter Balint and her story is really unusual. It's so unusual, in fact, that her latest project is a memoir. She was born in Hungary and lived there until she was about 10 years old. But the rise in communism at that time forced artists who were more avant garde, like Eszter's family, to leave the country. She found herself in New York City with her immediate and extended family, creating the Squat Theater where some of the most amazing artists created their work. Eszter worked with a diverse array of people. Sometimes she was behind the scenes with sun Ra, while other times she was right in the middle of it all, from acting in Jim JArmusch movies to playing violin in a Jean Michel Basquiat production. So it shouldn't be a surprise that she began writing and performing her own material. And when the acting bug reappeared, she went to LA. But she eventually came back to New York, raised a family and got back to music. Her aforementioned new project is a combination theater production and accompanying album, called I Hate Memory that pairs her with Stew from Stew & The Negro Problem. She's got shows coming up in NYC, so check out her Instagram page @eszter.balint. Pick up I Hate Memory on Bandcamp or wherever you get music. Follow us @PerformanceAnx on Instagram & Twitter. From the Avant-Garde tribe of New York City, if you ever needed to know if the movement of performance art is still alive, well, Eszter Balint is proof of that. Born in Hungary, she has lived in New York City for decades, and has been "boots on the ground" making music to inspire you. She considers the violin her "Weapon of choice" as she delivers sometimes dark, but ever inpsiring music, just making you think, where you have been and what significant thing you can do today with what you know. We bantered about Hungarian History, performing with David Bowie, and her lack of interest in science fiction. Her new album "I Hate Memory" is a powerful reflective piece that will be performing live at the "Under The Radar" festival in January at Joes Pub (with plenty of other artists as well). Dig in, there is a lot to unpack with Eszter Balint, no looking back. soundcloud youtube facebook twitter Under the radar #eszterbalint #davidbowie #jimjarmusch #stevebuscemi #thechelseahotel #jeanmichellebasquiat #postpunk
Interview with Eszter Balint. Eszter Balint released her new album Airless Midnight in late 2015. It was recorded at New York's Brooklyn Recording and Richmond's Montrose Recording, produced by JD Foster, and features Chris Cochrane, Marc Ribot, Dave Schramm on guitar as well as well as singer songwriter Sam Phillips on harmonies. Eszter has been very busy for the past few years. In 2014 she was making progress gathering material for the new album when out of the blue-after a long hiatus from acting she was offered a part she couldn't refuse. She agreed to star in a six-episode arc of Louis C.K.'s F/X series Louie, Season 4, a performance which would earn her considerable critical praise. Eszter also improvised compositions, sang and played violin for the episodes which featured her performance. As soon as filming wrapped, Eszter returned to work on her album. Eszter starred in Jim Jarmusch's classic Stranger than Paradise, and was featured in Steve Buscemi's Trees Lounge, and worked alongside Mia Farrow and John Malkovich in Woody Allen's Shadows and Fog, among other film appearances. She continues, “In 1995, while living in Los Angeles, I decided to fully devote my artistic energies to music-making and words writing, more specifically to becoming a performing and recording songwriter. I have two albums out, Flicker (1999) and Mud (2004), both produced by JD Foster, who has made wonderful records with Richard Buckner and Marc Ribot among many others, which were both received with critical praise. “I have since been fortunate enough to have been asked to lend my violin playing and singing to works by people I consider true artists, most notably guitarist Marc Ribot, and Michael Gira of Swans fame,” Eszter can be heard on violins on two Angels of Light albums as well as Swans' The Seer, and on vocals and other instruments on multiple Marc Ribot projects including Ceramic Dog's Your Turn, – a band she was a guest member of through 2009 – and on an upcoming album of Mr. Ribot's songs. Big Gulps, huh? Alright...well, why you're here, you might as well get comfy, settle down for a spell, and catch up with old friends. This edition of Overlapping Dialogue has us hitting the highway for two road classics, Stranger Than Paradise & Dumb and Dumber! But before we arrive there, we take a few detours with a Blue Plate Special discussion of the surprisingly adequate Halloween Ends, the wickedly talented (iykyk) The Devils, and the considered brilliance of Tár, Todd Field's long awaited return to filmmaking. This week's duo is just as offbeat and eclectic: listen as we discuss Jim Jarmusch's 1984 portrait of hipster malaise, the Farrelly Brother's 1994 idiotic odyssey, and the curious connections both films have in depicting the joys and pitfalls inherent to the open road. In the forty-eighth episode of Season 1, Cult Flicks & Trash Picks, Kyle is joined by screenwriter Kelcie Gruenberg and podcaster Ben Thelen (of the Popcorn Optional podcast) to discuss the bone dry comedic rumination on slacker malaise and the elusive American Dream in Jim Jarmusch's breakout cult hit Stranger Than Paradise.
It's not your average episode this week, we're talking about a black-and-white deadpan comedy. It's Jim Jarmusch's groundbreaking film Stranger Than Paradise, released October 1st, 1984. On our latest episode host Peter Agoston sat with the Hungarian singer, actress, violinist Eszter Balint. In the acting word many know her work from such acclaimed works as 'Stranger Than Paradise' (where we learn how she is responsible for the incredible Rammellzee cameo). and 'Tree's Lounge', she also was a major stand-out on Season 4 of 'Louie', as Amia. She's also an accomplished recording artist, having collaborated with the likes of Swans and Marc Ribot. We talk about that + growing up at The Squat Theater, Louie, Bowie, Sun Ra, Warhol, Susan Sontag, and muuch more. But most importantly we talk about being Hungarian. I didn’t recognize Eszter Balint’s name when I got a PR pitch about her Airless Midnight, but I the record a quick listen anyway and shot her representation a note about getting her on the show. Lucky for me, the musician has the sort of backstory press release writers kill for, the daughter of experimental theater troupe members who moved her and the theater from Budapest to New York at an early age, putting her at the epicenter of the city’s late-70s avant garde scene. In 1984, friendships with musicians John Lurie and Richard Edson led to a leading role in Jim Jarmusch’s pioneering Stranger Than Paradise, with roles in Woody Allen’s Shadows and Fog and Steve Buscemi’s Trees Lounge following (along with a lesser-cited Miami Vice appearance). Disillusioned with acting, Balint dove headfirst into a musical career that found her collaborating with a wide range of musical visionaries, from Michael Gira to Marc Ribot, along with the release of two critically acclaim solo records more than a decade apart. 2014 also saw an unexpected return to acting, as Louis CK cast Balint as his violin-playing Hungarian neighbor in Louie. Balint was kind enough to sit down at a Manhattan cafe to cram as much of her fascinating life as possible into an hour-long interview.
