Oh boy. We've found ourselves in a bit of Barney Rubble, eh? However hard we try, we seem to find ourselves back in prison. And in this episode, you can listen to us in "real-time" literally figuring out how many "prison movies" we've already uncovered, and it's alarming. We're back with Mr. Mackenzie after we did YOUNG ADAM all those episodes ago, and it's another pretty bleak and disheartening piece of cinema starring Jack O'Connell in a big bad man prison. Key words here: "Prison Kisses" and you won't be disappointed.Enjoy! (hahah)

Jake Roberts ACE, Will Files, Polly McKinnon and Lee Gilmore Although the ALIEN: ROMULUS postproduction team of Jake Roberts ACE, Will Files, Polly McKinnon and Lee Gilmore came into this project with a wealth of knowledge and experience amongst them, they still learned a thing or two from director Fede Álvarez, including Fede's not-so-secret formula for jump scares, as well as the notion that clear dialogue isn't always as important as gripping action. Plus, they reveal the hidden intent of Álvarez to split ALIEN and ALIENS into the two sides of the REMUS/ROMULUS space station. ALIEN: ROMULUS is the ninth installment in the Alien franchise, set between the events of ALIEN (1979) and ALIENS (1986). The film follows a group of downtrodden young space colonists in pursuit of better life conditions. During the course of their escape from endless servitude on a mining colony, they encounter hostile creatures while scavenging a derelict space station. JAKE ROBERTS, ACE After his work on CITADEL (2012), STARRED UP (2013), THE RIOT CLUB (2014) and BROOKLYN (2015), Roberts earned an Oscar nomination for Best Film Editing for his work on HELL OR HIGH WATER (2016) starring Chris Pine. The movie also garnered him a nomination for an Independent Spirit Award. Roberts then cut OUTLAW KING (2018) for Netflix directed by David Mackenzie. He then began collaborating with director Alex Garland, editing his 2020 miniseries DEVS as well as his film, MEN (2022). Prior to ALIEN: ROMULUS, Jake cut Garland's CIVIL WAR (2024). WILL FILES Will Files is known for his work on THE INVISIBLE MAN (2020), VENOM (2018), WAR FOR THE PLANET OF THE APES (2017), STAR WARS: EPISODE VII – THE FORCE AWAKENS (2017) and CLOVERFIELD (2008). POLLY McKINNON Polly McKinnon is known for DISTRICT 9 (2009), FORD V FERRARI (2019) and DUNE: PART TWO (2024). In 2019 she won a Golden Reel Award for her sound editing on EXTINCTION (2018). LEE GILMORE Lee Gilmore is known for BLADE RUNNER 2049 (2017), DUNE (2021) and THE BATMAN (2022). Gilmore also won an Emmy for his work on the feature film, PREY (2022). In a coincidental continuation of last week's prison theme, the guys talk about Starred Up this week, a father/son prison drama starring Jack O'Connell. Our Bad Boys episode was so much fun that we decided to keep chatting about prison movies. Covered in the conversation are prison movie themes like revenge and redemption, tropes such as the guy who can get anything or the inevitable shower scene, and how great prison films like The Longest Yard, The Shawshank Redemption, and Starred Up have more to say about the human condition. We also chop up films that have elements of prison movies within them like Deadlock, Face Off, Tango & Cash, and Out of Sight.
Jonathan Asser worked as a psychodynamic counsellor inside prisons, helping g some of the most violent men in the system. He went on to write the 2013 prison drama ‘Starred Up' with Jack O'Connell. I spoke with him about him about shame, violence and belonging. Here is a link to a short film about Jonathan's work in prisons Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

LITTLE FISH, the fourth feature film from director Chad Hartigan, is a romance set in a near-future Seattle teetering on the brink of calamity. The film imagines a world where a pandemic has broken out, that strikes with no rhyme or reason, and causes its victims to lose their memories. This is the world that newlyweds Emma and Jude find themselves in, not long after meeting and falling in love. When Jude contracts the disease, the young couple will do anything to hold onto the memory of their love. Starring Olivia Cooke (Sound of Metal, Thoroughbreds) as Emma, Jack O’Connell (’71, Starred Up) as Jude, Soko and Raul Castillo, LITTLE FISH, opens in the midst of a global epidemic: Neuroinflammatory Affliction, a severe and rapid Alzheimer’s-like condition in which people’s memories disappear. Couple Jude Williams and Emma Ryerson are grappling with the realities of NIA, interspersed with glimpses from the past as the two meet and their relationship blooms. But as NIA’s grip on society tightens, blurring the lines between the past and the present, it becomes more and more difficult to know what’s true and what’s false. Director Chad Hartigan (Morris From America, This is Martin Bonner) joins us for a conversation on the making of his subversively sly sci-fi / love story and how the on-screen artistry of the two lead actors helped shape this prescient tale of love in an age of isolation and mistrust. Director David Mackenzie may have floundered slightly with his last film, the seemingly little seen Outlaw King, but he sure followed up on the promise of this superb British prison drama with Hell or High Water. The excellent firebrand actor Jack O'Connell has yet to crossover like less talented UK peers (looking at you Tom Holland) but is on fire here and backed by the always welcome Ben Mendlesohn.

He brought this on-edge energy to Hollywood blockbusters such as Rogue One: A Star Wars Story and Ready Player One while maintaining a reputation for portraying complex, masculine figures in indies like Killing Them Softly, Starred Up and Babyteeth. Though it’s impossible to pigeonhole the 9 feature films David Mackenzie has directed, there’s one thing they have in common: his obvious passion for music. Having enlisted Scottish band The Pastels to provide the soundtrack for his debut The Last Great Wilderness, he’s since collaborated with luminaries such as David Byrne and Max Richter. Indie label Domino Records provided all the songs for Hallam Foe, while David’s romantic comedy You Instead was shot over 5 crazy days at the T In The Park festival in Scotland. His latest film Hell Or High Water continues this fine musical tradition - scored as it is by Nick Cave and Warren Ellis. So expect to be taken on a musical journey, with tracks from Townes Van Zandt, Waylon Jennings, Franz Ferdinand and The Bill Wells Trio among many others.
Ian McEwan's new novel, Nutshell, is a murder mystery set in a grand, decrepit Georgian home in London. It's based on Shakespeare's Hamlet, and features a pregnant woman, her estranged husband, and his brother who is now the woman's lover. He explains why he chose to tell the story from the point of view of the foetus.Things to Come is a new film by the 35-year old French director Mia Hansen-Love. Her previous features have been semi-autobiographical films about people of her own age, however this one explores the life of an aging woman whose husband leaves her, mother dies, and whose reputation as a philosophy professor is starting to fade. All of which offer her a kind of freedom. Briony Hanson reviews. At a time when elitism in acting is a hot topic, Kirsty visits The Television Workshop, a BAFTA winning acting school in Nottingham which has been giving opportunities to young actors from a less privileged background since 1983. Where she meets the current intake and we hear from some of its famous alumni, including Games Of Thrones actor Joe Dempsie, star of Starred Up and Jack O'Connell, and This Is England creator, Shane Meadows. In tribute to Gene Wilder - the star of films such as Young Frankenstein, Blazing Saddles, and The Producers - who has died, we hear part of an interview first broadcast in 2005 about his autobiography, Kiss Me Like A Stranger: My Search for Love and Art.Presenter: Kirsty Lang Producer: Angie Nehring.
It's time to get manly and dig into a few films that tackle the various aspects of brotherhood and friendship. We bring up a million other movies at random and settle in for a bit of grilling shop talk. Oi!
Continued from last week, Dave and Tom discuss St. Vincent, A Walk Among The Tombstones, Starred Up, Obvious Child, Pride, Two Days One Night, The Maze Runner, Predestination, Dom Hemingway, A Most Wanted Man, God's Pocket and Life After Beth.

At the time of recording it was mere speculation, but it is now indeed fact that the third Captain America will indeed focus on Marvel's infamous 'Serpent Society' storyline... just kidding, it's actually gonna be Civil War, co-starring Robert Downey Jr as Tony Stark, no less. Also, at time of recording it was only Warner Brothers and DC who had announced Super Hero movies all the way up to 2020, so we'll have to address the recent Marvel megaton in a future episode. We also talk about some movies we've actually seen on this episode, including Starred Up, The Skin I Live In and Gone Girl - the latter of which we go full spoilers on.
