This was an interesting and fun chat with an introvert who lives in a world (situation, business, career) requiring her to do ‘extrovert-y' things, like talking on a podcast to thousands of people. Julie Stevanja told me she declines most podcast requests because they “absolutely exhaust her”. So interesting. Having said that, she was (is) ace. We went far and wide in this chat, touching on the challenges of being an introvert, our similar religious upbringings, the Law of Attraction (is it BS?), trying to ‘figure out' spirituality, seeking external validation (the modern illness), social anxiety, the genius that exists beyond the mind, risk and stress, internal vs. external wealth, conscious consumption and more. Julie Stevanja is the co-founder of the women's activewear brand, Stylerunner. Along with her twin sister Sali, in 2021, she launched ‘Her Black Book' a Consumer app connecting retail brands with consumers who love to shop and it's going off like a frog in a sock (my words), currently working with more than 700 amazing brands. Happy Thursday, pals! On today's show: Kanye West has his social media accounts locked and draws the ire of Gigi Hadid, why Prince Harry's memoir might never be released, Carrie Bickmore departs The Project, the oh-so juicy claims that this year's Miss USA pageant was “rigged”, and then, it feels like every corner of the internet is declaring “thin is in”. If that's the case, who's to answer for it? This week, Mich recommended watching Marriage on ABC iView and reading ‘What I Know' by Jessica Knoll in Lenny Letter. Zara recommended watching Virgin River on Netflix and listening to ‘Laughing About The Thing That Just Happened' on Hamish and Andy's The Remembering Project. Julie Stevanja is co-founder and CEO of Stylerunner.com Her story is bloody inspirational. In particular what I love about her tale is not only the grit to keep going, and her ability to see a gap in the market - but how she knew and valued the power of her personal network so much that she relocated back to Australia to build the business, and now is running an internationally massive retail operation from an office in Alexandria in Sydney. From a back-row rebel to front-row style entrepreneur, looking back on her younger days, businesswoman Sali Sasi sees ambition and resilience as the common threads woven through her story. Leaving school early to channel her wild ambition and hands-on attitude into an apprenticeship in business set the tone for an award-winning career across e-commerce, retail and hospitality. Working with sister Julie to found popular e-store StyleRunner, the duo have just launched luxe style app Her Black Book, a platform for style lovers to not just shop, but be inspired by fashion and lifestyle content from a range of perspectives. With these businesses under her belt, plus award-winning restaurant Leigh St Wine Room, Sali's ambition and entrepreneurial expertise is plain to see. But her resilience has been a quiet hero, steering her through some of life's toughest challenges. From a breast cancer diagnosis at just 27, to recently undergoing a hysterectomy, a strong sense of self and commitment to choosing resilience has let Sali not only forge a path through, but channel her positivity and perspective into helping others. Sali caught up with Samantha Dybac to talk business, navigating life's challenges, and trusting your gut. The Australian apparel and footwear industry has been incredibly volatile and lively over the last decade with many companies considered to be staples of the world fashion industry closing their operations within Australia and operating solely online. This is due to high operating costs which includes soaring rents and high wages. Several high-profile companies have recently discontinued their operations, namely international players such as Gap, Espree and Forever 21 and local players Bardot and Stylerunner went into voluntary administration in 2019. However, key trends have seemed to be common among businesses that are thriving in this difficult Australian market.
On this extra episode, Sam and Courtney discuss their thoughts on Stylerunner. To keep up to date with us:@spinandco@_sammangan@courtneymanganThis podcast is part of The Spin Studio network.

Imagine finding yourself sitting across the board room table negotiating the deal of your life with the world's biggest sporting brand - Nike. Well, in 2012 this was the reality for Julie Stevanja, who invested her life savings into Stylerunner - a brand that just a few years later would become the world's biggest online activewear retailer, valued at over $50M. Impressive right? We can confirm that in person, she is just as amazing as she sounds! But aside from the awards, accolades, and financial success, what really blew us away was Julie's kind nature, her authenticity, and her willingness to share advice with not only us, but also with all of you. We began our chat in the Stylerunner board room, surrounded by mood boards featuring the upcoming winter collection.

While I've mentioned I don't want Seize the Yay to be about just business, health and women, I couldn't help but showcase another incredible female founder and CEO in the wellness space, Julie Stevanja, who I am also lucky to call my friend. Like Lisa and Rach, I met Julie at my first major speaking gig a few years ago and am continually in awe of how stylish, successful and savvy she is! She is CEO of one of my favourite online retailers, Stylerunner, which grew by 1736% to a multimillion dollar company value in the first three years. The website ships to 100 countries around the world and stocks more than 50 brands, including their own label Flight Mode which I absolutely adore. She is the epitome of style, somehow integrating Activewear into street style in a way that very few others could pull off. At that very first speaking gig when I was super nervous, she told me she was a closet introvert and gave me a quick schooling on the psychology of power posing and I've never forgotten it. So glad to have her on the podcast to share some of her many other pearls of wisdom. And since the sun was shining on this beautiful day we recorded outside so the birds provide some beautiful ambiance but you'll have to excuse an airplane or two! + Show notes are available here + Announcements on Insta at @spoonful_of_sarah + Subscribe to not miss out on the next instalment of YAY!

Want to turn your passion into a paying job? Then you need to listen to this eye-opening chat with e-commerce powerhouse Julie Stevanja. The creator of an e-commerce store for fitness fanatics, this trailblazing CEO has been credited with inspiring the ‘sports luxe’ craze with her online activewear retailer, Stylerunner. Having created the site while living in London, it was born purely out of necessity, when this self-confessed yoga addict couldn’t find the kind of on-trend gear she wanted to wear to her daily Bikram class. The site grew by almost 2000% in its first three years, generating a cult-like following around the world. Winner of Young Retail Entrepreneur of the Year and named in the Deloitte Tech Fast 50 in 2016, Stylerunner now delivers to customers in more than 100 countries. And the most amazing part of all? This incredible tech start-up went from side-hustle to success due to one crucial element. In this candid and inspiring chat, we talk about how to find your purpose, follow your passion, identify opportunity and turn that million-dollar idea into reality, while staying happy, healthy and balanced through it all. Julie Stevanja is co-founder and CEO of Stylerunner.com Again, her story is bloody inspirational. In particular what I love about her tale is not only the grit to keep going, and her ability to see a gap in the market - but how she knew and valued the power of her personal network so much that she relocated back to Australia to build the business, and now is running an internationally massive retail operation from an office in Alexandria in Sydney. A quick word about prep. You know me. I always prepare However on this day I rolled into the interview and realized I'd forgotten to put my SD card back into my recorder, and lost 15 minutes of interview time because I had to run across the street to Sun Studios which is the big fancy photography studio set up here in Sydney, buy an SD card, and then sprint back across the street. So apologies for the length of the show today - don't worry, I have put my spare SD card back into my podcast kit. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
