This is an encore podcast presentation previously aired on September 8th, 2023. Have you ever had the privilege of working with a truly great manager? If so, you probably remember how rewarding that experience was. And it's no coincidence—research shows just how profoundly managers shape our work lives. Consider these findings: Gallup reveals that managers are the single biggest influence on employee engagement and performance, accounting for 70% of the variance in team engagement. A Stanford study shows productivity can increase by up to 50% when employees transition from an average manager to an exceptional one. Better bosses also lead to higher retention rates. Yet, exceptional managers remain all too rare. But that's something we can change. It starts with understanding what makes a manager someone people are eager to follow. In today's episode of #WorkTrends, we're diving into this topic with a management development expert to uncover the secrets to becoming the kind of leader every team deserves.

In this week's episode of The Mind Tools L&D Podcast, Ross Garner and Owen Ferguson are joined by Dr Anna Barnett, from our own in-house Insights team, to discuss the findings of our latest report: ‘Building Better Managers'. Managing Made Simple for Team Leaders & Small Business Owners
I'm going to tell you something you might not want to hear... Being a "well-liked" manager doesn't make you a GOOD manager. Many managers think that being someone who loves people, loves mentoring, and loves developing their team members makes them a good manager all by itself, and while that's a huge portion of the job...that's not enough. Luckily, the other pieces of the puzzle CAN be learned! Not everything a good manager does makes us feel great. Things like giving difficult feedback or holding people accountable can be hard when we want our team members to like us. But we can't shy away from hard conversations or less-pleasant pieces of management just because we want to be liked. And in reality, the things you're so afraid of doing can actually strengthen your team members' trust in you. WORK WITH LIA: Get your hands on a copy of my new book, The Unstoppable Team! His insights are unconventional, funny, irreverent, and bold, including this: Not everyone should be a leader, and it's a mistake to push them to do so.In this fun, fast moving 30 minute conversation, Scott discusses what he learned from Stephen Covey, “a man who not only knew his strengths, but his weaknesses. He also underscored the difference between being efficient and being effective,” and the gist of his books “Management Mess to Leadership Success” and “Everyone Deserves a Great Manager,” and his latest hit, “The Ultimate Guide to Mentorship.”“In great companies, it's not a democracy,” he says. “The leader has to make the final decision. But she has to listen, too. This is 2023. People no longer want to work for the ‘smartest guy in the room.' They want to be heard, they want to be part of something.“Stephen Covey often said, ‘When you're working with people, fast is slow, and slow is fast.' Take the time to hear them out. That's how you get buy-in.”Scotts Books: https://www.scottjeffreymiller.com/books/About our Host:For info about the book or this podcast please visit our website:http://www.letthemleadbybacon.comhttp://www.johnubacon.comYou can connect with John via these platforms:https://www.facebook.com/johnubaconhttps://twitter.com/Johnubacon

Managing Made Simple for Team Leaders & Small Business Owners
It's often the little things that add up over time that make us great managers and leaders, and the difference between good and great managers often comes down to how intentional we are into bringing clarity and transparency into how we communicate. In this episode, I'm joined by Kristen Hartley, Learning & Development leader at Workday, where we dive deep into two of the most important topics for managers of any sized team (and my two favorite things to talk about), how to set expectations and paint success and how to make feedback a two way street and ask for feedback effectively. We also dive into how to scale yourself as a leader, and the mindset needed to take your leadership game to the next level. Today's guest is Scott J. Miller, Executive Vice President of Thought Leadership for the FranklinCovey Company, author of the best-selling books Management Mess to Leadership Success and Everyone Deserves a Great Manager, and host of the #1 leadership podcast On Leadership. Scott is high-energy, unfiltered, and full of insights he's gleaned throughout his life. Just as in his books, Scott is quick to use his own missteps and tendencies as examples of what not to do when it comes to leadership. On the show, we learn how his boundless energy and ingenious ideas have actually created unintended friction as they often take his team off track and away from the top priorities. He shares how he overcame this challenge, while also revealing the importance of checking his ego as a leader. Scott also shares why he views vulnerability as a leadership competency, tells us the reason he counts on those close to him to give blunt feedback about how he's being perceived, and why he believes there's a big difference between effectiveness vs efficiency when it comes to relationships with his team members. As a manager, you need to lead others. To do this effectively, they must believe in the mission, vision, and challenges in front of them. They have to buy your story. They need to believe you. Some people think this means you have to be a cheerleader. You have to get up, turn on the energy and charm, and convince your team of what you need them to do. This can work iff (if and only if) that is your normal style. If it is not, they will see right through it and will not be on board. They might say they are… but their hearts will not be in it. Instead, what you need to do is communicate in your own way. If you are deeply analytical, use this approach. If you are an introvert and prefer 1:1 conversations, do that. “Just Be What You Is” simply means be who you are, be you!

Say Thank You for Everything: The Secrets of Being a Great Manager (Harriman House, 2022) is a bullshit-free guide to management that shows you the right way to lead a business, inspired by Jim Edwards's experience of helping to transform a small unread blog into a business with 200 million readers and hundreds of employees, which finally sold for $442m. Based on a legendary internal email that distilled 19 things a new manager might find helpful, Say Thank You for Everything will show you: - the ‘whales and fails' method of decision-making that systematically improves your team's results - the incredible power of being slightly better than average - why good hiring is 80% of everything - how to increase productivity and reduce burnout at the same time - why your teams should never be bigger than five people - the importance of taking your enemies to lunch - the surprising places great ideas actually come from - the dark arts of successful management - and much, much more. You might be a brand-new boss unsure where to start, or a struggling supervisor thinking of throwing it in, or perhaps someone who just doesn't want to lose their humanity on the way to the executive suite. Say Thank You for Everything will help you look after your people, get results for your business, and be the kind of boss you always wanted to have yourself. Russ is currently chief people officer at Goodwater Capital; and also is the creator of Career Conversations; which is covered in Radical Candor, and to which Russ dedicates nearly 100 pages of his new book. Kim and Russ discuss how to make every manager (measurably) great and to rid the world of assclown managers everywhere. Radical Candor Podcast Episode At a Glance The world has conspired to confuse the average manager. Despite near-limitless resources — books, blogs, podcasts — that purport to teach us how to be great managers, the reality is that managers globally aren't really any better than they were 30 years ago. (The evidence is this: as more evidence emerges that the manager is most responsible for employee engagement, global engagement is still at just 15% and 33% in the U.S.) Managers are struggling due to a lack of regular formal check-ins on how they are doing as a manager. Their bosses have almost no context on how they are leading their people and therefore can struggle to coach them. Kim and Russ discuss: Why managers are failing, and no one is helping. What we need is to learn to lead in a way that measurably and predictably leads to more engaged employees and better business results. We need a simpler and more coherent leadership standard, something with quantitative backing that shows it works. People just want to do great work and be totally psyched while doing it. People deserve to be led well. The art of Continue Coaching. Hour 2: The 7am hour begins with a recap of the Yankees weekend. Just like in years past, if they are not hitting HRs, they are lifeless. Gio also argues with a caller who says Buck Showalter is not a great manager. Jerry returns for another update. He starts with play by play and interviews from the Nets Game 1 loss in Boston. Kyrie battled the fans in Boston. The Yankees lost a series in Baltimore, but at least we got a Josh Donaldson HR call. In the final segment of the hour, Gio tells us he has an ‘Al Dukes Week'. No wife or kids, just dogs to take care of. Gio is wearing a leprechaun outfit today since he is rooting for the Celtics against the Nets. Boomer says he loves a Mark Wahlberg movie. Gio wants to golf with Boomer this week.
