Zibby interviews Jessica Knoll about BRIGHT YOUNG WOMEN, the utterly absorbing, blisteringly paced, instant New York Times bestseller about two women who are brought together by violent acts of the same man and become allies as they pursue justice. Jessica shares her research process, which involved delving into the 1970s era through magazines, touches on the importance of victim's rights, and describes the evolution and the challenges of her writing process. The conversation reveals the meticulous process behind novel writing and offers a glimpse into how real-world issues can be woven into fictional narratives.Purchase on Bookshop: https://bit.ly/3QrNKrdShare, rate, & review the podcast, and follow Zibby on Instagram @zibbyowens! Jessica Knoll joins Carol Fitzgerald to discuss her latest novel, BRIGHT YOUNG WOMEN, which is a Bookreporter Bets On selection. It's a fictitious look at the victims of a serial killer, based on Ted Bundy, though he is never called by name here. Jessica talks about the structure of the novel, where the crimes that open the book are captured hour by hour and day by day. She explores the three characters in the book, as well as the research that she did to get the right tone and tenor for the story. Jessica realizes that if the victims had survived, they would be in their 50s and 60s today. She also touches on the television series adaptation that she has been tapped to write, as well as her experience with the film adaptation of LUCKIEST GIRL ALIVE. Jessica Knoll's "Bright Young Women" is a fictional story based on the Ted Bundy case. While his name is never used in the story, other true pieces of information from the case are. So is Knoll really reclaiming the story of the victims? The Busy Girls are split.
In 1978, serial killer Ted Bundy broke into a sorority house in Tallahassee, Florida, and murdered two women and attacked two others. The new novel Bright Young Women tells the story from the perspective of a sorority sister who survived the attack, and seeks to take Bundy down. Author Jessica Knoll joins us to discuss.

On this episode of Complicated Conversations we are thrilled to welcome back one of our favorites, Jessica Knoll! Jessica is the New York Times best-selling author of The Favorite Sister and Luckiest Girl Alive, which she adapted and executive produced for the screen. Jessica's highly-anticipated new novel, Bright Young Woman, is a fictional reimagining of the final murderous spree of our country's most famous serial killer. We chat with Jessica about how this book is the result of a “rage epiphany” and proposes a new narrative – that the so-called brilliant and charismatic man behind these acts was actually incredibly average – and that it was the women whose lives were cut short who were the exceptional ones. Jessica discusses the bright young women of her novel – which one helped her work through issues within herself; how these women leaned on each other and saved one another; the ways in which victims are always blamed; and how important it was for her to make clear that women were never fooled by this man. We also talk about grief and finding purpose from loss. We couldn't let Jessica go without also covering some Bravo content too! Bright Young Women is out now and it's amazing! Buy it, read it, share it, and listen to our spoiler-free chat with Jessica wherever you get your podcasts. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Today Joe chats with Jessica Knoll about her new book, Bright Young Women. They talk about her work dissecting and researching the crimes of Ted Bundy as she crafted her novel from the perspective of two victims. _____ FALE CONOSCO . Jessica Knoll is the New York Times best-selling author of Luckiest Girl Alive and The Favorite Sister, and her work has been published in over 40 languages. Her books are so gripping, in fact, that they've both been adapted for film and television, respectively. With that career success also came a pivot, as Knoll has made a name for herself in the industry as a standout screenwriter and producer with even more projects under way. She's adapting the Reddit short story “I Think My Mother-in-Law Is Trying to Kill Me” for Sony and sold her first original script, ‘Til Death, to Amazon. But back before Knoll was adapting stories for film and television and even before she was writing the books that would inspire them, she was an editor at Self and Cosmo magazines. Tune in to hear how her multifaceted career has unfolded in unexpected and fascinating ways.
