It was a passion for birding and indeed podcasting that lead Suzy Buttress to establish the wonderful Casual Birder podcast, for which she travels extensively, tracing birds and indeed other wildlife around the world. We discuss her recent expedition cruise to the Falklands, South Georgia and Antarctica, dealing with anxiety when having heard two people sadly lost their lives on the same journey, how whale-watching in Baja California brought her to tears, the truly awesome experience of witnessing a solar eclipse in Oregon, feeling the fear and doing it anyway and much more. This week, we have an international flavour to the show – with two very special guests. First, we chat to Suzy Buttress from England. Suzy is the host of The Casual Birder Podcast, which encourages people of all experience levels to appreciate birds wherever they are found. She shares about her podcast, as well as gives us insights into her style of birding. We then chat to Freya McGregor, an Australian who lives in the United States. She tells us all about the Birdability project that looks to make birding accessible to more people – especially people with disabilities. Most successful podcasters don't make most of their income from their podcast. So why do successful people, from celebs to business leaders, keep investing in their own podcasts? Legitimacy and access. For every successful podcaster I know who makes most, if not all, of their income directly from their podcast, I know a hundred more successful podcasters who see very little direct income from their podcast. Yet each and every one of the successful podcasters I know credits their podcast as being instrumental to their ongoing success. Let's not forget the tangible benefits running a successful podcast brings to your podcast. Tangible benefits that are oftentimes better and more lucrative for you in the long term. A well-produced podcast is significantly better than a one-sheet at communicating your goals.  A well-produced podcast can be better than a headshot at conveying your talents.  A well-produced podcast showcases that thing you do much better than a 6-minute explainer video. And even though I'm an author, I think that a well-produced podcast is much better than a book at demonstrating your knowledge in a particular area. One of the biggest powers of a well-produced podcast is the outsized legitimacy it provides. That legitimacy opens up doors to you that other people who do not have an established, respected, and well-produced podcast may find difficult to get through.  Those tangible benefits are often much more valuable to you and to your total income possibilities than any small ad campaign, affiliate deal, or whatever bundled service offering you were pitched just this week.  ----- Boostagram Corner Thanks to Suzy Buttress for the virtual coffee! Authentic Podcasting Is The Best Self Care

Podcast Pontifications

Worrying about growth, new tech, and other podcasting distractions can cause you to forget that your audience is your audience, not a nameless pool you have to fight for week after week. Lean into them. I'm not a big fan of the word authentic. It's become overused and often used incorrectly. But there's one place where I've no issue with hearing the word, and that's when talking about your authentic self.  I'm incapable of being anything other than my authentic self for more than a dozen minutes. But that may not be you. Regardless of how much you can let your authentic self shine through during your waking hours, I hope you are able to be your authentic self on your podcast.  While listening to a conversation https://www.cameronesposito.com/ (Cameron Esposito) was having with https://twitter.com/jesskupferman (Jessica Kupferman) at https://www.shepodcasts.com/live/ (She Podcasts LIVE) over the weekend, I jotted this note: Your audience is your audience. It's okay to talk about things that only your audience cares about. The masses don't matter.  Now, I think that's an incredibly grounded perspective for any podcaster to take and reflect on from time to time. Your audience is your audience. Those five words can work as a re-centering mantra when you need it. Saying them out loud can, when needed, help you reconnect with your show, which in turn will help you reconnect with your audience. Again, when you need to. It's very easy to get caught up in the desire to grow your podcast. And yes, I think that growing a show is important. To some degree, growth is at least somewhat important to most podcasters. How important is debatable, obviously. But if your quest to grow your show drives you too far away from the content your authentic self cares about, then you may see the opposite of growth. To thine own self be true. That's why your audience is listening to your podcast in the first place.  ----- Boostagram Corner Thanks to Doug Berger for the virtual coffee! Not a huge hit on its release, Mystic Pizza has gained a dedicated cult following in recent years and the film is carried by a wonderful performance by Roberts. I'm back from our regular summer vacation, and I think I need another one. We always a good time, but, let's just put it this way, would you want to spend 20 hours in a van with 4 screaming boys? But now it's time to get back to work, back to business, and back to talking about myself because that's what I do here. Well, not just about myself. It's also time for another Sunshine Summit! -Summer VacationThis year was the smoothest, most efficient summer vacation we've had since moving to Arizona. My wife started planning the hotels back in January and this year we've finally found the best hotel that suits our needs. As a family of 4, we just have to have a suite with a full living room and kitchen in order to keep our sanity. The drive back to Texas was seriously the smoothest it's ever been. When we drive to Texas, we actually do it all in a single trip without any overnight stays. My wife and I just keep switching drivers while the other rests. This year we went for a little different plan. I drove in the big cities and overnight, and she drove the open roads during the day. This actually left us with a pretty even spread of time. I actually stopped to take a nap at some rest stops a couple times, but I never got so tired that I felt like we were in danger, which has happened in the past. Other than that we stopped for major meals and kept on trucking. We did all the same things we always do. We visited our families. My stepmom insisted we all go to Peter Piper Pizza. We went to the Texas State Aquarium. We drove around to see what things have changed. It's the same things we do every year, but this year seemed must less stressful. Maybe it's because we are in such a good place financially this time. For the first time ever, we actually didn't come home broke. In fact, we actually came back with extra money left over. It's taken nearly 10 years, but we've finally gotten our family vacation dialed in. In a couple more years we wont even need to pack a diaper bag. here's looking forward to next year's vacation going just as smooth. -Recommended Listening- Sunshine Summit 2.0https://www.sunshineandpowercuts.com/sunshinesummit2018/ The Sunshine Summit, created by Heather from the Sunshine and Powercuts Podcast, is a week long event made up of live streams celebrating connections and friendship from August 11th to the 17th (12th to the 18th for you people living in the future.) This time around it is also marking the 1 year anniversary of the podcast. I am fortunate, more accurately, lucky enough to be joining Heather on the actual anniversary of the podcast. Besides myself, returning guests include: Alysa Lucas, Bandrew Scott, and Stargate Pioneer. Joining in this time are also Derek Graziano, Rhett Hall, Anthony & Stephanie Conte, Lonein Lara, Suzy Buttress, Logan Naugle, Lisa & Sam, and Luke "Newsreel." -Jackass Of The Week-Whoever Designed the Freeways In Texas CitiesInstead of pulling up a story from the news to make rip into, I'm just gonna go with a serious gripe I have with my vacation back to Texas every year. The design of the freeway systems in the major cities in Texas is utterly retarded. Never mind that they are perpetually under construction with no real progress or signs of any actual improvements over the last 8 years. Scratch that. Make it 20 years. The freeway systems and roads themselves make no logical sense. Frequently, ramps exiting the freeway lead directly into ramps entering the freeway with less than a quarter mile of space for the cross traffic to avoid crashing into each other. Oh and the on-ramps themselves have such short merge lanes that many times cars have to stop on the ramps or in the travel lanes of the freeway to allow cars to enter and merge into traffic or avoid collisions.Add to that the fact that all of the freeways have active businesses and shopping areas running along them and use the frontage roads as major streets. And of course these businesses are all the ones that you are trying to get to: grocery stores, gas stations, shopping malls, hotels. So when you are trying to get in and out of these businesses you are having to fight with all of the traffic trying to get on and off the freeway. On top of all of that, the cities are designed in a way that practically forces you into using those freeways to get anywhere because of how the cities are laid out. Of course the roads themselves aren't actually capable of handling the heavy load of traffic and so you may spend hours on the road and maybe only move 2 miles. I all but refuse to drive at certain times of the day while I'm visiting my dad. It's not worth the stress. Oh, and did I mention just about every road is in need of repair and cleanup? Suzy Buttress is host of The Casual Birder podcast and has a deep love and appreciation for all types of birds. Having recently launched her podcast in November 2017, Suzy set out to share the wonder and excitement of watching wild birds in their natural habitat by sharing her experiences about the birds she’s seen in the UK and other parts of the world with people just as passionate about bird watching.
