A man's desire to quench his thirst is strong... strong enough to fend off bullets, Nazis and the desert itself. James Cameron-Wilson reports on a healthy UK box office despite the hot weather. New #1 is Deadpool & Wolverine, the first Marvel film James has enjoyed in a long time. Its 15 certificate is well-deserved as it has lots of blood, beheadings and bad language and there's too much CGI combat but Ryan Reynolds' meta-banter is undeniably funny and the film is full of "Easter Eggs" for fans. The 1959 Sylvia Syms and Herbert Lom British drama No Trees in the Street is available on 4K restoration disc. Shot like an American film noir it's a poverty row drama which is a fascinating time capsule and makes you appreciate the conveniences and luxuries of modern life. Guy Ritchie's films keep going straight to streaming in the UK, including the supposedly true-life war film The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare. It's very Guy Ritchie, bloody with lots of OTT violence but is nonetheless a guilty pleasure. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices
In today's episode I talk to philanthropist Lord Martyn Rose. Martyn comes from a prestigious legal background having studied law and has enjoyed notable successes. He also entered the world of entertainment at the age of 15 which began a long and successful career. He says he loved his days in the entertainment industry but accepted that he needed a profession, to support his lifestyle and he decided to study law. He has been asked often where do entertainment and law meet? And his answer is: " In the courtroom one needs to be a good actor". He has worked alongside many greats such as Anne Shelton, Ken Dodd, Sylvia Syms, Rosemary Leach, Dany Williams to name but a few. He has shared the company of many great actors and entertainers, some of the most memorable moments were with Charlton Heston and dining with Margaret Thatcher. And there are many more fantastic stories to tell in the book that he has started to write called My Life Already. Martyn dedicates his time and expertise for the benefit of others less privileged, through his many charitable endeavours and events encouraging his high profile celebrity friends and political connections, to contribute to his worthwhile causes. We talk about his sheer determination and self belief that started from an early age and how this unshakable faith gave him the strength to build a phenomenal career in both show business and law. A charming and heartwarming episode that gives inspiration to everyone who wants to follow their dreams.

Aric and Marisa travel across the pond to explore the films of the United Kingdom, specifically during the '60s and with a little detour into the '90s. They look at how the perspectives of these films are shaped by the social and economical circumstances of everyday people, and how these perspectives have much to illuminate about today's prevalent issues. The six films this episode highlights are a mix of heavy hitters and tender stories of identity: SATURDAY NIGHT AND SUNDAY MORNING (1960), a Karel Reisz picture studying the attitude of a man who plays by the rules during the week, then lets loose on the weekends, VICTIM (1961), the suspenseful story of a man blackmailed by his homosexuality and his fight to be himself against the law, THE LONELINESS OF THE LONG DISTANCE RUNNER (1962), a character study about a talented young runner who questions discipline and the authority behind it, THIS SPORTING LIFE (1963), a story of a man who wins everything except his unrequited love, THE LEATHER BOYS (1964), a film about a newlywed couple in crisis when the husband develops feelings for a member of a rival biker gang, and LIFE IS SWEET (1990), a Mike Leigh film about a working class family enduring the mundanities of life while hanging onto their personal dreams. ITC Entertained The World - episode 9 - The Tamarind Seed Hosted by Jaz Wiseman, Rodney Marshall and Al Samujh. Jaz, Rodney and Al discuss The Tamarind Seed - the 1974 ITC film starring Omar Sharif, Julie Andrews, Anthony Quayle, Sylvia Syms, Dan O'Herlihy, Oskar Homolka, Bryan Marshall, David Baron, Celia Bannerman and Kate O'Mara. Directed by Blake Edwards and filmed on location in London, Paris and the Caribbean, it was one of Lew Grade's first forays into feature films. With a lush John Barry score, Maurice Binder titles and cinematography by Freddie Young. Often overlooked as romance, Jaz, Rodney and Al argue that there is a lot more to this film than the critics suggested. Are you red or are you blue? Do you believe in fairytales? Put on your 70s slacks and head into the murky world of espionage and love.

Episode 4 features Melanie Williams from the University of East Anglia. We discuss an underrated 1960s gem, Wolf Rilla's the World Ten Times Over (1963)which stars Sylvia Syms as a Soho nightclub hostess. The BFI describes it: "Though never criminalised, lesbianism was verboten on screen in the early 1960s. Wolf Rilla’s rich, acerbic feature quietly subverted prevailing censorship, hinting at British cinema’s first lesbian relationship. Nightclub hostesses Ginnie (June Ritchie) and Billa (Sylvia Syms) share a flat and an increasing despair at the men in their lives. Syms’ moving, melancholic performance cuts through the compromises to signal Billa’s love for the fragile Ginnie." The beautiful soundtrack of the film was composed by Edwin Astley. With Kirsty Lang. Another London is a new exhibition at Tate Britain which reveals the capital as seen through the eyes of photographers from all over the world, from 1930 until 1980. The images chart the city's transformation, from bombed- out ruin to punk playground. Craig Taylor, author of Londoners, considers the capital's many changes. Louis Nowra is an acclaimed Australian dramatist, who has written two new plays for BBC Radio 4. He tells Kirsty how a serious head-injury, and being the son of an infamous murderess, have shaped his writing - and why he avoids arty types, preferring instead to have a beer with the labourers in his local bar.
