Melanie Williams is Professor in Film and Television Studies at the University of East Anglia, UK. A specialist in British cinema, her publications in this area include British Women's Cinema (2009), Ealing Revisited (BFI, 2012), David Lean (2014), Female Stars of British Cinema: The Women in Question (2017) and Transformation and Tradition in 1960s British Cinema (2019).A Taste of Honey (1961) is a landmark in British cinema history. In this book, Melanie Williams explores the many, extraordinary ways in which it was trailblazing. It is the only film of the British New Wave canon to have been written by a woman – Shelagh Delaney, adapting her own groundbreaking stage play. At the behest of director Tony Richardson and his company, Woodfall, it was one of the first films to be made entirely on location, and was shot in an innovative, rough, poetic style by cinematographer Walter Lassally. It was also the launchpad for a new type of young female star in Rita Tushingham.Tushingham plays the young heroine, Jo, who finds she is pregnant after her love affair with Jimmy (Paul Danquah), a Black sailor. When Jimmy's ship sails away, Jo is comforted and supported by her gay friend Geoff (Murray Melvin), while her unreliable mother, Helen (Dora Bryan), has her own life to lead. Candid in its treatment of matters of gender, class, ethnicity, sexuality and motherhood, and highly distinctive in its evocation of place and landscape, A Taste of Honey marked the advent of new possibilities for the telling of working-class stories in British cinema. As such, its rich but complex legacy endures to this day.Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/writers-on-film. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

In essence, what we each ‘do' in, and to the world about us, is overwhelmingly influenced by how we each ‘see' that world: how each of us attempts to make sense of what is happening about us as a prelude for doing something in response. We refer to our ‘way of seeing' in this context, as our worldviews. These reflect complex sets of beliefs and value assumptions that we hold (but which mostly remain in our sub-consciousness). In the process of growing up, and without appreciating the details, we each discover that not everybody has same view of the world as we do. Indeed, we find out, pretty early in life as it happens, that profound differences in worldviews between us often leads to disagreements about events and ideas and opinions: just think politics and polarisation. The nature and significance of these worldviews are the topics of the conversation in this episode between our host Richard Bawden and Melanie Williams who has conducted significant research into these matters. Melanie is an Associate Professor at the William Angliss Institute in Melbourne where she is the Associate Dean with special responsibilities for Scholarship. Her primary role is to support vocational education teachers as they seek to improve their teaching and learning practice: Getting to Better Together in action!

TRUE HOUSE STORIES W/ GRAEME PARK #029 - PART 2 The story of DJ Graeme Park really mirrors the story of the evolution of dance music and club culture itself. Graeme found himself working in a Nottingham record shop called Selectadisc in the early 1980s, when the very first house records began to filter through from Chicago, Detroit and New York. When the shop's owner opened a nightclub, it was only natural he should turn to Graeme to select the discs. Determined to showcase this new style of music, his reputation as a house pioneer soon brought him to the attention of Mike Pickering at The Haçienda in Manchester, who asked him to cover for him while he went on holiday in 1988. Simply put, there was no-one else in the country who could do the job. The Summer of Love followed, and Parky quickly became one of the biggest names on the emerging dance scene. Aside from his nine year residency at The Haç, he was one of the first British DJs to play places like Australia, South America, the USA, Asia and beyond as well as producing and remixing tracks for the dancefloor, including The Brand New Heavies, Inner City, Eric B & Rakim, New Order, Sophie Ellis-Bextor and others. In the past few years Graeme has performed alongside a host of legendary DJs such as Todd Terry, David Morales, Derrick Carter, Louie Vega, Danny Krivit, Marshall Jefferson and others for a variety of FAC51 The Haçienda club nights playing a selection of contemporary tunes alongside a variety of forgotten classics. Graeme has been a major part of the critically acclaimed Haçienda Classical shows which have performed around the UK since 2016 to rapturous response where he performs live alongside the Manchester Camerata Orchestra, Peter Hook and special guest vocalists to a set of classic club tunes from the 1970s up to the present day. This euphoric show has had rave reviews and gives you the chance to hear classic club tunes like you've never heard them before with a 70 piece orchestra, live percussionists and a choir. Graeme even performs some lead vocals at some shows too. The show opened the Pyramid Stage at the Glastonbury Festival in 2017 and has also performed at the Royal Albert Hall in London, Castlefield Bowl in Manchester, the Isle Of Wight Festival and lots of other arenas and festivals around the UK as well as in Dublin, Dubai and Switzerland. Graeme recently released compilation album “Long Live House Volume 01: 1980s” is a triple CD or double vinyl album of early house cuts from 1985 to 1989 which were all massive tunes for Graeme in the early days of house. Released in December 2018, reaction to the album has been huge and has led to Graeme launching his own Long Live House club nights. Graeme is also producing a forthcoming music documentary called “Embrace The New” which features Marshall Jefferson, Johnny Marr, Shaun Ryder, Peter Hook, Rowetta, Clint Boon, Melanie Williams with others lined up too. Celebrating over 25 years on the radio with shows on Kiss, Galaxy, Key 103, Radio City, Juice FM, Forth One and more, Graeme's years of experience help him understand the specialist skills required by a radio DJ.

The Republican National Convention comes to a close as Donald Trump accepts the party's nomination. We examine a splintered party's direction under the current president. Then, today marks the anniversary of Emmett Till's death. How has his example shaped race relations in the decades since?Plus, studies suggest Black women are three times more likely to die during pregnancy. What one health group is doing in the Delta to address this alarming rate.Segment 1:It was a nomination acceptance speech unlike any before. In an adorned front lawn, complete with Trump-Pence campaign signs and slogans, Donald Trump officially accepted the Republican Party's nomination for re-election. Lucien Smith is Chair of the Mississippi Republican Party. He tells our Desare Frazier the convention has served to present voters a contrast of ideas. But the 2016 nomination and consequential Presidency of Donald Trump has caused some splintering in the Republican Party. A handful of prominent party members have been outspoken against the President - especially his temperament. Perhaps no group more than The Lincoln Project - whose membership includes Mississippian and Republican campaign strategist Stuart Stevens.Segment 2:Sixty-five years ago today, a young black boy visiting from Chicago was brutally murdered in the Mississippi Delta for allegedly flirting with a white woman. His death galvanized the civil rights movement - a movement often defined by the March on Washington exactly eight years following his murder. For some, Till now serves as a modern day symbol for injustice against African Americans nationwide. Jerry Mitchell, author and founder of the Mississippi Center for Investigative Reporting, tells our Ashley Norwood Till has become a modern day symbol for injustice to African Americans throughout the Black Lives Matter movement.Segment 3:As COVID rages on, the inequities that contribute to Black mothers being 3x more likely to die during pregnancy compared to white women are exacerbated further, especially in communities like Sunflower County, which experiences one of the highest per-capita rates of COVID in the country. Episode 4 features Melanie Williams from the University of East Anglia. We discuss an underrated 1960s gem, Wolf Rilla's the World Ten Times Over (1963)which stars Sylvia Syms as a Soho nightclub hostess. The BFI describes it: "Though never criminalised, lesbianism was verboten on screen in the early 1960s. Wolf Rilla’s rich, acerbic feature quietly subverted prevailing censorship, hinting at British cinema’s first lesbian relationship. Nightclub hostesses Ginnie (June Ritchie) and Billa (Sylvia Syms) share a flat and an increasing despair at the men in their lives. Syms’ moving, melancholic performance cuts through the compromises to signal Billa’s love for the fragile Ginnie." The beautiful soundtrack of the film was composed by Edwin Astley.
