A dense, enigmatic, and bombastic epic, John Boorman's 1981 film Excalibur brings the Arthurian romances to life in all their symbolic glory. Featuring a stellar cast, including Helen Mirren, Nicol Williamson, Liam Neeson, Patrick Stewart, Ciarán Hinds, and Gabriel Byrne, the film is an opportunity to see many lauded British and Irish actors early in their careers. Excalibur leans into the episodic and mysterious nature of the Arthurian stories, leaving it to the viewer to interpret and understand the events unfolding on screen. The film also provides a visual feast with amazing costuming, epic set-pieces, and stunning cinematography, all of which add to its larger than life feel. While challenging and, at times, confusing, Excalibur holds up well in the modern day and its ambition is second-to-none. Looks Unfamiliar is a podcast in which writer and occasional broadcaster Tim Worthington talks to a guest about some of the things that they remember that nobody else ever seems to.Joining Tim this time is writer and soprano Suzy Robinson, who's pressing the Magic Button in the hope of conjuring up recollections of Crown Court, Now That's What I Call Music! 4, Nicol Williamson's reading of The Hobbit, Floodtide and Gus Honeybun's Magic Birthdays. Along the way we'll be finding out how Morten Harket accidentally ended up in Dorking, writing in to Stanley Spencer's Magic Birthdays, revealing when BBC Test Card F might actually be your less terrifying viewing option and debating whether J.R.R. Tolkien's prose is better enhanced by deeply ingrained record scratches or by Bernard Cribbins banging his head on the studio ceiling. You can find more editions of Looks Unfamiliar at http://timworthington.org/.If you enjoy Looks Unfamiliar, you can help to support the show by buying us a coffee here. Or you could write in to Gus Honeybun, I suppose, but even though he almost certainly had his own branded mugs where the transfer came off the first time you washed them, I severely doubt he had his own Magic Birthdays Roast.

Tune in today to hear the many stories of his long career, including sitting under a piano with Marilyn Monroe, why he thought he caught tuberculosis from Harold Pinter, hiring Nicol Williamson, revising The Rothschilds, how he thinks theater has changed, his hit sketch for Oh, Calcutta!, analyzing Richard Rodgers, why he related to Sinclair Lewis, the antisemitism of Maureen O'Hara, why he thinks his newest plays are the best yet, and reflects on the world of opportunity in which he grew up. Mr. Yellen's new book, Absent Friends, will be available soon.
Is that the rousing sound of Carl Orff's O Fortuna assaulting our ears? Yes, it's time for a genuine “round table” discussion: this episode we look back at Excalibur, John Boorman's 1981 whirlwind tour of Arthurian legend. Based on the 15th-century prose work Le Morte d'Arthur by Thomas Malory, which collected together many popular legends about King Arthur and his knights, Boorman's film takes us from Arthur's conception through to his death, taking in the rise and fall of Camelot and the quest for the Holy Grail. It stars Nicol Williamson, Helen Mirren, Liam Neeson, Gabriel Byrne, Patrick Stewart and other top Thespians. We're joined for this magical mosey into the misty middle ages by Joe Abercrombie, bestselling fantasy author of the First Law series, The Shattered Sea books, the Age Of Madness trilogy and more. His latest novel, The Wisdom Of Crowds, drops on 14 September 2021 from Gollancz (Orbit in the US). Joe is a Locus Award winner, an avid gamer, and a social media master with the moniker Lord Grimdark. You can find out more about him at his official site https://joeabercrombie.com/. Looking for more recent TV and film recommendations? We're happy to help there too. First up: The Suicide Squad, and a moment so funny that our Dave laughs the cat off his desk. True story. Yes, we hitch a ride with DC's worst of the worst – and silliest of the silliest – to see if it trumps 2016's definite-article-free Suicide Squad. Then it's a show so good that NBC pulled the plug – only for it to become a big hit on Netflix. We get Lost with mystery drama Manifest. There's all this plus Marvel's What If…?, BBC's Ghosts and more “requels”, in Robby The Robot's Waiting, the podcast that is a dream to some – a nightmare to others! NB There's no news section this time – we've stopped doing that, but we'll be introducing a monthly news round-up podcast you can hear separately! See our new website www.robbyscifi.com for details. Episode highlights: 0:01:00 – WHAT WE'VE BEEN WATCHING: The Suicide Squad, Manifest, Ghosts, and Marvel's What If…? 0:31:19 – Meet guest Joe Abercrombie! Welcome back to the Morgue! The Morticians go medieval with our (soft? mid?) season one finale discussing the new #a24 fantasy THE GREEN KNIGHT by David Lowery, which our boy Wes decided long ago he would pair with EXCALIBUR (1981) by John Boorman. Themes of mysticism, knighthood, possession, bravery, and lack thereof abound in both these Arthurian tales. But there's uh….a sizable gap in delivery. TIMESTAMPS [0:00 - 19:57] News! On this week's show, we're tucking a talking chicken under our arm for 1985's relentless nightmare Return To Oz, directed by Walter Murch. Why is this film so bleak? How much of a threat can people with wheels for hands really pose? Is Dorothy Gale doomed to a life of PTSD-induced delusions? And who do we have to call to get a Gasper Noe-directed Alice In Wonderland? All this, plus naked vampires and a stupid quiz about Australia. Return To Oz is directed by Walter Murch, and stars Fairuza Balk, Jean Marsh, Nicol Williamson and Piper Laurie. Bad With Numbers is a weekly show about questionable movie sequels, all the way from Toronto, Canada. It's hosted by Neth Knowles, Laura Medeiros, Rodey Gozum and Megan Swaine. Forty years ago, King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table got the blockbuster treatment with John Boorman's 1981 production retelling the classic tales. Starring Nigel Terry as Arthur and Nicol Williamson as Merlin, the film also features Gabriel Byrne, Helen Mirren, Patrick Stewart, Liam Neeson, and Ciarán Hinds in some of their earliest film roles. Shot entirely on location in Ireland, the movie boasts a dazzling production design, elaborate (and shiny) costumes, and music from Carl Orff, whose “O Fortuna” from the cantata Carmina Burana was used in the film's trailer. The legend of King Arthur has never been lacking in cinematic retellings, but none can compare to John Boorman’s gorgeous and thematically faithful Excalibur. From the vast and tangled web of source material, the director of Point Blank and Deliverance distills the epic myth down to iconic imagery backed by theatrical performances from young actors destined to be stars. This week the Sordid Cinema Podcast discusses the fantastic (and fantastical) filmmaking, dives into the lore, and admires the vision of clunky knights and a wily wizard, all bound together by primeval landscapes and a magical sword. Join Rick, Simon, and Patrick as they debate the effectiveness of green lighting and ADR, compare Excalibur to another movie involving a quest for the Holy Grail, enjoy Nicol Williamson’s sly (and often hilarious) turn as Merlin, mourn the character of Gawain, and show off their knowledge of one of the most famous tales ever told. Whether you think it’s glorious or a little goofy, there’s plenty to love about Excalibur, so have a listen!

How many new releases is too many? We know the answer but we don't care. In this week's photo negative show Aidan spills the beans on Robert Eggers's follow-up to The VVitch, The Lighthouse. Tim, meanwhile, still can't quite believe we're getting to see Terry Gilliam's passion project The Man Who Killed Don Quixote, and Graham sees one of his favourite subgenres expertly revived in Queen & Slim, a lovers-on-the-run movie for the Beyonce era. Before that, there's our director's lottery to attend to, in which we vault all of Tony Richardson's hits in favour of the super-rare Laughter in the Dark, a Nabokov adaptation never released on home video, starring Nicol Williamson and the late, great Anna Karina. Penny pulls back the curtain on her career to discuss how she won the role of Broadway's most sinister ingenue, what it was like losing her head to Nicol Williamson, and why she was almost Mabel Normand! Also, Penny shines the spotlight on Lauren Bacall, David Merrick, Robert Redford, and Jake Gyllenhaal. John Boorman's polarizing but highly ambitious take on Arthurian legend is a visually and aurally striking look into the myth, the fantasy, and the haunting imagery that the medieval Thomas Malory tale has evoked over the last several centuries. A then-nobody, but now all-star cast that includes Helen Mirren, Liam Neeson, and Patrick Stewart appears alongside stars Nigel Terry and Nicol Williamson to spin this sword-and-sorcery take on this well-known tale unlike any other that has seemingly come before or since.

In “How to Dial a Murder,” Nicol Williamson plays Dr. Eric Mason, a behavioral psychologist looking to exact revenge on his business partner, who may have had an affair with the doctor’s late wife. This revenge takes the form of having trained dogs viciously tear the partner apart after hearing the phrase, “Rosebud,” all while […]

"now bright, now faint, as the burning poison waxed or waned" [TWIS] After nearly 130 years in print, it seems like the phenomenon of Sherlock Holmes may have peaked. And yet, it's likely that every generation may have thought that - including the one in which Sir Arthur Conan Doyle was still writing the original stories. We've often said that every generation has its Sherlock Holmes, and when we move beyond the printed page, it's quite true. From William Gillette to Eille Norwood, Arthur Wontner to Basil Rathbone, Ronald Howard to Douglas Wilmer and Peter Cushing, not to mention Robert Stephenson, Nicol Williamson, Jeremy Brett, Robert Downey, Jr., Jonny Lee Miller and Benedict Cumberbatch. These are just a handful of names from two forms of media. Sherlock Holmes fades but manages to come back, with no sign of abatement. Each time, the fandom receives a shot in the arm and there's a high-water mark left when the tide recedes. Then, it happens again, perhaps increasing slightly. But the interest in the character remains. In this episode, we look at the cultural phenomena behind Sherlock Holmes and the impact that the character and his portrayers have had on us. We can't forget the news, the Editor's Gas-Lamp (from Autumn 2000, Vol. 50, No. 3 of the Baker Street Journal), and more. Sponsors This episode includes our two longtime sponsors. Two very different movies this time. The definitive and classic version of Oscar Wilde's 1895 play The Importance Of Being Earnest (1952) starring Michael Redgrave, Joan Greenwood and Margaret Rutherford, then we move to 1969 for a forgotten but gritty drama The Reckoning starring Nicol Williamson and Anne Bell. We go from upper class frippery to working class angst in one fell podcast. Support the podcast via Patreon and feel good about yourself.
Ali and Jon both go back over the rainbow for 1985's traumatizing Return To Oz, a not-really-a-sequel-to-the-movie that proves Disney has always been in the business of scarring children for life. But is this movie as disturbing as Jon and Ali remember? (SPOILER: Yes.) Once again, one of Ali's childhood favorites stars a preternatural brunette girl, while Jon wonders what sort of blind, idiot god would allow the Gump to be. Somehow, this podcast ends up being only six minutes shorter than the movie itself. Return To Oz stars Fairuza "I'm Not Ione Skye, You Idiot" Balk, Nicol Williamson, Jean Marsh, Piper Laurie, and a whole bunch of terrifying things. Directed by Walter Murch.
When Tobe Hooper was removed from Venom for creative differences Scott and Joey never wondered why. They say there isn't one scene left in this movie that Hooper shot. Find out what we had to say.
Who can pull the sword from the stone? Will it be Paul, Chris, or Colette? What’s the creepiest way to say someone is pregnant? Also, what’s with that green light? “AND CUT!” Want to watch this film (at your own risk)? It’s available for digital rental from the following services: iTunes Google Play Youtube Hilariously, we had originally a link to Target Ticket in here, but apparently that service is no more. Let the commentary begin! Colette was immediately surprised by the adult scenes in this film having seen it on TV so many times. Paul can’t help compare this film to the Merlin television show. John Boorman, the director of this film is the same man who brought us last season’s favorite, Zardoz. Excalibur was a hit when it came out in 1981. Hey, maybe this isn’t a bad movie? The Hobo font doth not flatter ye, film. Nicol Williamson plays Merlin. He’s a similar character in the bad movie, Spawn. When you don’t hide CGI in the dark, you get The Golden Compass. Paul thinks the glowing green sword might be light saber like. Igrayne gives everyone an innocent dance & then channels Tawny Kitaen. Is Uther riding to the Duke’s castle on fog & lust or is this a TriStar picture? Clan of the Cave Bear Igrayne is played by the director’s daughter, Katrine Boorman. That’s right, dad is giving her direction in a nude sex scene with Gabriel Byrne. A young Captain Picard shows up in this film. He’ll be followed by other youngsters like Liam Neeson and Helen Mirren. Behind the Sword in the Stone is documentary about Excalibur that has not been distributed yet, but you can see an excerpt here. Live listener &!(bitandbang) enjoys the new tag line Chris has for the film, “Patrick Stewart jousts the hell out of some dude.” Is Merlin Rasputin or Yoda? Has Arthur entered the forest or the Dark Side Cave? “What’s that song?” wonders Paul. Live listener &!(bitandbang) answers, “O Fortuna”. Click that link to see a recap of the film and hear the song. The Cave of Time is no Cave of Wonders. The guys compare bad lines & shaky plot bits to Empire Strikes Back and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2. Boy Mordred is played by the director’s son, Charley Boorman who now does a lot of documentary TV. Chris compares the weird gold armor with nipples to the Joel Schumacher Batman & Robin bat suit. Lesson learned? You go into a room or tent and see someone you don’t expect in your mother’s clothes? Don’t ask questions, you kill that person! Listener &!(bitandbang) suggests we watch City of Lost Children. The final fight between Arthur and his son is going to be like a Mortal Kombat video game! It looks like a heavy metal album cover! Yet, it is completely anticlimactic. For a real end fight you have to go to revengeofthe.ninja from season 1. Recommendations: Star Knight, or perhaps some TV, Merlin. Support Film Frown on Patreon
Edición número 19 de La Gran Evasión. 13-1-2014.

Meyer IV: The Seven-Per-Cent Solution. When the decision was made to turn his successful novel The Seven-Per-Cent Solution into a movie, Nicholas Meyer took on the challenge of adapting it himself. The result was an Oscar nomination. The film, in which Sherlock Holmes meets Sigmund Freud, was as much of a critical success as the book which preceded it. In this episode of Commentary: Trek Stars, Max and Mike look at Meyer's work on the film directed by Herbert Ross and starring Nicol Williamson, Robert Duvall and Alan Arkin. We discuss the unusual tone of the film, the changes which were made for the screen, and how this Sherlock Holmes compares to other screen versions of the character. We also hope for a Sherlock Holmes crossover in Meyer's upcoming Sigmund Freud television series. Hosts Mike Schindler and Max Hegel Editor and Producer Mike Schindler Associate Producers Become one!
