Published 19 May 2024This week we talk to India Syms who at 23 navigated Outlaw, the Baltic 55 in the Ocean Globe Race 2023. The OGR was a round the world race recreating the original Whitbred Round the World race. All the boats were pre 1988 and all the tech was the same as 73. So India navigated with a sextant, a weather fax and dead reckoning. We had a bit of fun with this idea whilst the race was on. Now it was done, we wanted to find out what it was like. Dr. Sandie Morgan is joined by Kelsey Syms as the two discuss R.E.A.L. Friends Don't and its importance in educating youth and parents and caregivers about online dangers. Kelsey Syms Kelsey Syms is the program manager for the Combating Human Trafficking program at the McCain Institute for International Leadership. She has a master's in Applied Leadership and Management and a bachelor's in Political Science. She's been with the McCain Institute, based in Washington D.C., since 2018. Key Points A recent survey by the McCain Institute found that parents and teen on't talk about sexting and online dangers. It's important that the talk between parents and teens about sexting and online dangers fulfill the stop, drop and roll method, meaning that it is a repetitive practice, not just a box that is being crossed off. Many parents often avoid difficult conversations like the one about online dangers, because they fear they are exposing their child to mature subjects at too early an age. However, R.E.A.L. Friends Don't provides a toolkit that gives parents tips on conversation starters. R.E.A.L. Friends Don't is focused on educating young people about the ways in which predators use social media to target vulnerable groups. They provide resources for both parents and teens, in Spanish and English. Resources Mccain institute R.E.A.L Friends Don't: Online Safety Campaign R.E.A.L. Sandra Morgan 0:29 Welcome to the Ending Human Trafficking Podcast here at Vanguard University's Global Center for Women and Justice in Orange County, California. This is the show where we empower you to study the issues, be a voice, and make a difference in ending human trafficking. Today we have with us Kelsey Syms, from the McCain Institute to talk about the R.E.A.L Friends Don't Online Safety Campaign. Kelsey has a master's in Applied Leadership and Management and a bachelor's in political science. She's been with the McCain Institute since 2018. So Kelsey, welcome. Kelsey Syms 1:20 Thank you so much, Dr. Morgan. It's a pleasure to be here. Sandra Morgan 1:24 I'd like to know a little bit first about, what is the McCain institute? Kelsey Syms 1:29 The McCain Institute is an action tank. We are a part of Arizona State University based in Washington, DC and we work on a whole host of issues ranging from democracy, human rights, preventing targeted violence, leadership programs, and combating human trafficking. Sandra Morgan 1:55 I love that and you've actually been with the McCain institute combating human trafficking for five years now. Is that right? Kelsey Syms 2:05 That's correct, I have. I joined the institute. I spent an internship with the Department of Justice in their child exploitation and obscenity section, and shortly thereafter joined the McCain Institute's combating human trafficking program, and have really enjoyed the thorough and impactful work that we've been doing, and really see a lot of opportunity ahead for us. Sandra Morgan 2:29 So I think it's important when we do our show notes, we'll put a link to the McCain institute. I love how it is based in an academic setting because so often we have abolitionist agendas, we are advocates, we're activists,
Kate Wolf is joined by the acclaimed artist and filmmaker Martine Syms to discuss her new exhibition Loser Back Home, currently on view at Spruth Magers in Los Angeles. Sym's work in the show encompasses video, sculpture, painting, photography, installation, publishing, and clothes. It merges recognizable brand names with personal ephemera to create a form of self-portraiture and explores the slippery nature of self as distilled through technology, as well as a state of "dysplacement"—a term coined by the historian Barbara Fields to describe the loss of a shared sense of connection to one's familiar or home country. Last fall, Syms also released her first narrative feature film, The African Desperate, which she co-wrote and directed. The African Desperate (now streaming on MUBI) takes place over the course of 24-hours in the life of an artist named Palace on the day she receives her Masters of Fine Arts degree at a small college in upstate New York, combining formal innovation with humor, pathos, and astute social commentary. Also, Craig Seligman, author of Who Does That Bitch Think She is?, returns to recommend Liz Brown's Twilight Man: Love and Ruin in the Shadows of Hollywood and the Clark Empire .

John Sherrer is the Director of Preservation at Historic Columbia, a non-profit organization that preserves places and shares complex stories from the past that connect us in the present and inspire our future.
Phil Carroll and Kevin Hornsby talk to Allan about CIZ1b. Primary lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer deaths worldwide. Early detection is crucial, as surgical resection of early-stage tumors is the only curative therapy currently available. Lung cancers detected at stage 1 have a better outcome than those diagnosed later. Screening programs using chest X-ray or low-dose computed tomography can identify the disease at an early stage, but the costs of screening, including the high number of false positives, make stand-alone imaging strategies difficult to justify. A blood-based biomarker, CIZ1b, has shown promise in detecting early-stage lung cancer. Shaun Day makes an appearance and talks about the recent Scallyway results and his time in London. As usual, there is a weekly round-up of the movers and shakers and a look at the biggest news stories of the past week. What does breastfeeding look like in the first week of a baby's life? Sometimes as new parents we keep thinking feed the baby, feed the baby, but babies have tiny tummies! While we may think they should be gulping down full breasts of milk, I learned years ago from today's guest, that all a baby needs in the first day or so is a teaspoon! In today's episode of Yoga| Birth| Babies we have one of my all time favorite people Andrea Syms-Brown IBCLC. You will hear me literally glowing and giggling as we have this conversation. I've known Andrea for almost 20 years not only did she help support me with breastfeeding two children, she was with PYC for around 17 years, she's an amazing person, newborn care specialist, and IBCLC. He is also an extensively published author, a member of numerous professional organizations, and the host of his own podcast, ListenUp! In this episode… One way to solve the problem of hearing loss is through the use of hearing aids. Hearing aids work by amplifying or increasing the volume of sound passing through the ear. This improves the clarity of words and the sound of consonants. However, for some people, hearing aids do not solve hearing loss—no matter how loud the sound gets. In such cases, it is advisable to seek medical help from a professional to evaluate whether or not the patient should get a cochlear implant. Cochlear implants stimulate the hearing nerves inside the ear to restore both clarity and loudness of sound. Dr. Mark Syms, the Founder of the Arizona Hearing Center and host of ListenUp!, gets interviewed by Dr. Jeremy Weisz, the Co-founder of Rise25, about using cochlear implants to fix hearing loss. Dr. Syms starts by explaining what a cochlear implant is, and then he differentiates between a good and a bad candidate for the implant. Stay tuned.

In this episode… If you're having problems with hearing loss, the best plan of action is to talk to a professional ear specialist. Contrary to some beliefs, hearing loss is a serious issue that can have significant impacts on your future health—and quick solutions, such as buying a hearing aid, do not amount to effective treatment. So, what is the best solution for hearing loss, and why are so many people hesitant to seek treatment? According to Dr. Mark Syms, many people view hearing loss as a negative health issue associated with the elderly. But, when people choose to ignore their hearing loss—or deny that they have it in the first place—they are opening themselves up to potentially serious consequences, such as social isolation and even dementia. That's why Dr. Syms always encourages patients to seek help from a specialist, so they can improve their quality of life moving forward. In this second episode of ListenUp!, host Dr. Mark Syms is interviewed by Dr. Jeremy Weisz, the Co-founder of Rise25 Media, about the importance of seeking treatment for hearing loss. Dr. Syms explains the negative social impacts of hearing loss, why simply buying a hearing aid isn't a solution, and how this issue, if left untreated, can lead to larger problems in the future—such as dementia. Stay tuned.

For those who are willing to admit that they have a problem, getting them to agree to see an ear specialist can be challenging because of all their concerns. Many people's concerns revolve around getting quality hearing aids, the cost of treatment and insurance coverage, the problem not being too serious, or their general practitioner not diagnosing them with hearing loss. These concerns can prevent them from seeking medical help and lead to more severe problems. Dr. Mark Syms, the Founder of the Arizona Hearing Center and host of ListenUp!, gets interviewed by Dr. Jeremy Weisz, the Co-founder of Rise25, about the most common questions and concerns people have regarding hearing loss. Dr. Syms talks about the reasons behind these concerns and explains why insurance may not cover treatment for hearing loss. He also explains why his clinic does not sell hearing aids.
On this epsiode of Behind the Stays, Zach interviews Kristen Bishop — a real estate professional who purchased the historic guest on the Filene family's estate that would become "Camp Adelaide." The Filene family owned and operated "Filene's Basement", also called The Basement, which was a Massachusetts-based chain of department stores that was owned by Retail Ventures, Inc. until April 2009 when it was sold to Syms. The oldest off-price retailer in the United States, Filene's Basement focused on high-end goods and was known for its distinctive, low-technology automatic markdown system. After purchasing the home in 2019, Kristen has made Camp Adelaide her nights and weekends project...slowly, but surely, restoring the home without disrupting its deep character. Listen in to learn more about the serendipity that led to Kristen's acquisition of the home, the story behind why she decided to become an Airbnb host, and what "home" during a global pandemic means to Kristen and her family. You can book a stay at Camp Adelaide, here. Mention "Behind the Stays" and/or "Sponstayneous" and Kristen might just cut you a special deal...but no promises :).

In this episode… People dealing with hearing loss often face a variety of challenges when it comes to communicating with others. Not only does it affect their social interactions, but it can also start to impact other aspects of their lives, such as their work, relationships, and mental wellbeing. If not corrected, hearing loss can become a barrier to many of life's greatest joys. Dr. Mark Syms has seen first-hand the negative impacts of hearing loss. After his brother, Robbie, was diagnosed with a brain tumor and later developed hearing loss, he became frustrated with the way people communicated with him. This caused Robbie to disconnect from his social life and ultimately isolate from his brother. Now, Dr. Syms wants to help others avoid these negative impacts and break down the social barriers caused by untreated hearing loss. In this first episode of the Listen Up Podcast, host Dr. Mark Syms, an Otologist/Neurotologist and Founder of the Arizona Hearing Center, is interviewed by Dr. Jeremy Weisz from Rise25. Dr. Syms discusses how his brothers influenced his career path, the social impacts of hearing loss, and the signs that you should see a doctor about your hearing. Stay tuned.

Brexit chaos spurs record flows to sterling-hedged funds. Investors pour money into pound-proofed ETFs at a rate seven times that of a year ago. According to figures from Lipper, the data provider, net inflows into Europe-based ETFs that are hedged to sterling reached record levels during the first three months of 2019. These funds pulled in close to €1.7bn during the period, as investors looked to protect themselves against currency risks linked to a no-deal Brexit. The inflows represent a sharp increase on the comparable period a year ago, when investors put a net €256m into sterling-hedged funds. This year’s largest inflows came in February, with almost €1.1bn moving into ETFs hedged to the British pound. Invesco, UBS and Lyxor were among the asset managers that gathered the lion’s share of new money into sterling-hedged ETFs during the quarter. Detlef Glow, head of research for Europe, the Middle East and Africa at Lipper, said increased demand for currency-hedged funds had come during a strong sales period for the ETF industry more generally. “An additional driver might be Brexit, as investors fear currency losses and are therefore hedging themselves against this risk,” he said. According to Lipper data, almost €27bn flowed into Europe’s ETF sector during the first three months of 2019. February in particular was a standout month, with net inflows of €13.5bn recorded. Andrew Walsh, head of passive and ETF specialist sales for the UK and Ireland at UBS Asset Management, said: “We have seen a few of our larger clients, and many other mid-sized clients, going into GBP-hedged in recent months on the basis that sterling is undervalued at current levels, no matter what the eventual outcome on Brexit.” Paul Syms, head of ETF fixed income product development for Europe, the Middle East and Africa at Invesco, said the asset manager has seen particularly strong demand for the GBP-hedged version of its US Treasury Bond 7-10 year ETF since its launch in January. “There are various reasons for investors buying longer-dated US Treasuries, which would include, but are not limited to, concerns about an economic downturn in the US and easing of monetary policy,” said Syms. “In addition, the UK is obviously facing the numerous risks around Brexit, which may cause sterling to be more volatile than in normal market conditions. For a sterling-based investor, the potential for sterling to rise or fall quite dramatically around the decision on if, when and how Brexit takes place — which has nothing to do with their economic view — may be a reason to hedge foreign-currency denominated assets.” The UK is now scheduled to leave the EU on April 12, with or without a withdrawal agreement in place. Prime Minister Theresa May has said she will work with Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn to help end the deadlock in parliament. Any new proposals on the UK’s future relationship with the EU will need to be agreed by MPs ahead of an emergency EU summit on Brexit scheduled for April 10. The prime minister said she would ask the EU for a further short extension to the Brexit date, with hopes that an agreement can be signed off before May 22 to prevent the UK taking part in European elections. But EU leaders poured cold water on the short-extension proposal, with The Guardian reporting that Jean-Claude Juncker, European Commission president, has said May will be given a choice between a longer delay, of up to a year, or crashing out with no deal on April 12. The ETF figures from Lipper come as anxious property fund investors have pulled more than £1bn from UK real estate funds since the start of this year, prompting fears that the sector is on course for a repeat of disruptive and costly fund closures experienced in the wake of the referendum vote in 2016. Data from Calastone showed that net outflows from open-ended property funds hit £578m in the first three months of the year — the second-highest level of quarterly net withdrawals since the data provider began collating figures four years ago.

Contemporary art is often defined as the art of the now. The work of Martine Syms is of this very moment. Defining herself as a conceptual entrepreneur, she adopts any discipline, any distribution method, any formal strategies and models that respond to the shifting boundaries of culture and business. Regardless of the lens she is using, her work investigates how Blackness is circulated as an image. One of her main interests has been the entertainment industry, especially film. Black references are at the core of the movies - black gestures, movement, language style, and fashion all essentially shape what we see on the screen. Through her work Syms pushes us to see that more clearly. With her installation at the Institute for Contemporary Art at VCU, Martine Syms moves into examining technology, specifically artificial intelligence and social media. In this space, unlike entertainment, there is very little, if any, reference to Blackness. The third “release” of what Syms refers to as a research project, Shame Space asks what Blackness and Black femininity might look like in this space. Amber Esseiva, assistant curator at the ICA, talks about Martine Syms and this paradigm-shifting installation that happily raises many more questions than it answers.
Episode 4 features Melanie Williams from the University of East Anglia. We discuss an underrated 1960s gem, Wolf Rilla's the World Ten Times Over (1963)which stars Sylvia Syms as a Soho nightclub hostess. The BFI describes it: "Though never criminalised, lesbianism was verboten on screen in the early 1960s. Wolf Rilla’s rich, acerbic feature quietly subverted prevailing censorship, hinting at British cinema’s first lesbian relationship. Nightclub hostesses Ginnie (June Ritchie) and Billa (Sylvia Syms) share a flat and an increasing despair at the men in their lives. Syms’ moving, melancholic performance cuts through the compromises to signal Billa’s love for the fragile Ginnie." The beautiful soundtrack of the film was composed by Edwin Astley. YOUR MUSICAL STORY Your musical story refers to the rhythm, the pace, and the feelings that your intentional communication creates. This episode will stimulate your creativity and allow you to feel storytelling with your heart and your whole body. It will get you out of your head. You will hear three short pieces of jazz music by the legendary saxophonist, John Coltrane. the are from his famous album, Coltrane Plays the Blues. Each piece is named after a person. The songs are: Mr. Day Mr. Syms Mr. Knight I first used this exercise when I was teaching young adults in New York City. I played the three songs for them and told them to pick one and write a story about it. The goal of the story was to make the central character of the song come alive. The students describe what Mr. Day, Mr. Syms, and Mr. Knight looked like; the described the men’s personalities and their behavior. Remember. These were musical compositions without lyrics. You will only hear the beginning of each song. It is sufficient to create an image and a feeling for you. It will also allow you to sense how the tempo changes. Why is this important? It’s important because it will help you to feel the organic beginning, middle, and end of stories at an unconscious level. That’s with practice of course. Open yourself to this experience, and you will tap into your natural creativity. It will ignite your imagination and make you feel good. Who knows? You may even fall in love with jazz if you aren’t already.

As an artist, Martine Syms says she's interested in how her experience—in particular, her experience as a young black woman—gets shaped and determined by various forms of media—especially digital media. She's interested in the power of that media—not just the obvious power of those who produce it, but the ways in which reading and consuming can also be acts of power. One of Syms's best-known projects is a critique of Afrofuturism, the artistic movement that explores and imagines the intersections between black culture and technology, typified by writers like Octavia Butler and Samuel Delany or musicians like Sun Ra or Janelle Monáe. Syms's work is preoccupied with the connections between media, technology, and black culture, but she rejects the afrofuturist mythology that imagines technology as a radical liberating funk-inflected fantasy. Syms is an afrofuturist, but, in her words, a mundane one. For her, the stakes are too high for an art that dwells in fantasy or the “harmless fun” of funky space aliens. The imaginative work of Afrofuturism takes the form of art that, for all its futurism and digitality, remains focused on our world, however upsetting, unjust, and mundane it may be. For the Organist, Syms spoke with our contributing editor, Niela Orr, about Syms's life and approach to art, and the new languages she invents for herself. In this episode, we also travel with Carmen Maria Machado to an Iowa gas station, where we find a dusty Subaru, a herd of cat-eyed children, and air that smells like diesel and manure and, inexplicably, limes. Carmen's book Her Body and Other Parties was recently long-listed for the National Book Award. Her writing has appeared in the New Yorker, Granta, Tin House, and elsewhere. Produced by Niela Orr and Jenny Ament Image by Martine Syms, courtesy of the Museum of Modern Art.

"Professor... what's going on?!" Good question, Ace. The last ever classic Who story to be recorded, Ghost Light, is something of a period-piece puzzle - with a few pieces missing. But it does include dinner-suited monsters, gun-toting maids, an insane explorer, a simian sermoniser and a Neanderthal butler (doesn't every home have one?). This madhouse is presided over by a dusty but upwardly mobile photophobe, with high treason on his ever-evolving mind. But he doesn't bargain on the devious Doctor and the arsonous Ace, ably abetted by a racist rozzer and an uncontrolled control experiment. Enter the angelic, anally retentive Light and the Earth is in imminent danger of being purged in a fit of OCD pique. But can Jim and Martin shed any light on proceedings? Listen in and decide for yourself.
This episode stars Shawn Syms (Friend.Follow.Text.). It was recorded at the Whistler in Chicago, IL in November 2013.
