This week, singing teacher and MDH Breathing Coordination coach Lucinda Allen is back, and we are diving deeper into the art of the exhale. From understanding airflow and pressure to optimising support through absorption, join us as we unravel the secrets to powerful, effortless singing. QUOTE ‘Pressure can only go one way in the body, and that's out. If we don't allow the body to absorb it, it will find its way to the vocal cords, creating strain. True support is about flexibility and movement, not tension or force.' My guest for this pilot episode is Gale Paridjanian of (the magnificent) Turin Brakes. If you listen to the song Underdog (Save me) by Turin Brakes, it will tell you a lot about how Gale plays and what he brings to a song with his guitar playing. Gale is an underrated and understated guitar god - as all Turin Brakes fans know. Olly Knights, singer in Turin Brakes describes Gales playing as “the real deal since the very beginning", and also “band cheat code” which Gale & I explore further in this conversation. Gale's choice of guitar is a Charvel electric-acoustic model from his days working in the acoustic department of one of the music shops in London's famous Denmark Street, for which he paid something like £469 (roughly £1,200 in today's money). “It's got my sound in it. If you plug it in it just sounds like The Optimist and that's our sound. It's a battle to play but there's something about how it sounds when it's recorded. It sounds like me”. An inexpensive one-off model, in Gales hands, the Charvel became the signature sound for Turin Brakes - Gales says “it feels more honest the more acoustic we are” - and it's true - the band were pioneers of the acoustic-led pop that followed, paving the way for singer-songwriters like Newton Faulkner, even Ed Sheeran. But Gale and the band are on fire, still. His own influences include The Stones, Chuck Berry, Chris Whitley and Derek Trucks. Gale plays some of his own and Turin Brakes fans' favourite pieces - a lot from the band's debut LP The Optimist - and tells stories of the band, his own life as a guitar player and the Charvel he holds dear, even if it is falling apart. Let's hope he gets it serviced soon. Support the showGet more related content at: https://www.songsommelier.com/
Breathing is something most of us do each day without much consideration, so why does breathing for singing tie us up in such knots? In this episode, Alexa is joined by Lucinda Allen, MDH Breathing Coordination coach and founder of Voice Unlocked, to find answers to some of the most common breathing challenges singers face. Lucinda breaks down the fundamentals of breathing for singing, including the power of touch, and how we can find an optimal inhale to inspire our voices.QUOTE‘We're all surviving and alive and breathing, but we're not always breathing as optimally as we could for the task we are taking part in.'WHAT'S IN THIS PODCAST?0:00 Why does breathing for singing tie us in knots?03:36 Common breathing challenges in singers05:06 When is breath the problem, and when is it the solution?12:37 Why MDH Breathing Co-ordination?21:23 The power of touch25:09 What we're actually trying to achieve at inhale30:34 A breathing exercise50:59 Working with physiology and conditions53:26 Mouth or nose?55:21 Performer case studies About the presenter click HERERELEVANT MENTIONS & LINKSMDH Breathing Co-OrdinationRobin De HaasRobert SussumaFeldenkraisPatrick McKeownSinging Teachers Talk Ep.40 Integrated Skills: Teaching Singing to Dancers with Jennie MortonSinging Teachers Talk Ep.175 Understanding the Transmasculine Voice with Stephen DavidsonABOUT THE GUESTLucinda has more than 15 years experience as a highly regarded voice, singing, and MDH breathing coordination coach. Cancer is the leading cause of death worldwide. People living in countries affected by conflict and war, as well as those in politically, socially, and economically fragile countries, experience worse cancer outcomes compared to more stable regions. Conflict and war result in displacement, destruction of physical infrastructure and supply chains, and the breakdown of healthcare systems. As a result, preventive measures and crucial health screenings often do not take place. For example, Sudan, which was once a hub for cancer care, has seen its healthcare facilities and access to treatment disrupted due to war and conflict. One individual working to address this issue is Dr. Susie Stanway, a cancer specialist and guest of the Purposely Podcast. After a successful career as a consultant oncologist, Susie shifted her focus to becoming a cancer advocate and activist for countries affected by conflict. She has played a crucial role in connecting fragile countries to funding and cancer resources, including treatment, doctors, and research. Motivated to bring about global change, Susie co-founded London Global Cancer Week, a series of meetings that provide a comprehensive understanding of the rising global incidence of cancer, the challenges posed by the cancer pandemic, and the impact of the Coronavirus pandemic on existing cancer treatment and research. These meetings also focus on strengthening cancer prevention and control in emerging countries, with a particular emphasis on the UK's contribution. Susie recognised that to bring about real change, she needed to go beyond the cancer world and influence people worldwide to understand the issue and help solve the problems. As a result, she collaborated with musicians to create a single titled 'More Than Fairy Tales,' which aims to raise funds for cancer care in war-torn Ukraine and Sudan. The money raised will be directed to the Challenge Fund, which supports organizations working on the ground to provide cancer care in these countries. Musicians from around the world, including Sudanese and Ukrainian singers, as well as English singer-songwriter Newton Faulkner, 19-year-old singer-songwriter and producer Jasmine Foxall, and British rapper Blackk Chronical, have come together to release this single as part of a campaign to support those in need of cancer care in war zones. More about Dr. Susie Stanway: Dr. Susannah Stanway is a consultant medical oncologist in London, specializing in breast cancer. She founded and chaired the steering group of the “Cancer control in low- and middle- income countries” conference held annually since November 2016 that in 2019 became London Global Cancer Week. She has co-founded the UK and Ireland Global Cancer Network. She teaches in the UK on global oncology (for example on the ICR MSc Course, UCL Global Health MSc and London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine on the Diploma of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene Course) and internationally. She has received awards from the Global Challenges Research Fund to collaboratively contribute to research projects in sub-Saharan Africa. She sits on the ECO inequalities network and has historically been on the ESMO global policy committee. She is currently working with colleagues in several low- income countries and conflict zones to contribute to capacity building. She has recently studied Public Policy Analysis at the London School of Economics. Alongside reducing between-country cancer outcome inequalities she has interest in reducing within-country inequalities in the UK for example sitting on Breast Cancer now Inequalities Funding Committee, contributing to the recently published Health Policy Partnership toolkit (Inclusion by design: building equity in clinical trials through the lens of metastatic breast cancer) and advocating. She sits on the Development Board of Breast Cancer Now. Source: London Global Cancer Week website --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/mark-longbottom2/message

2020 has affected freelancers in so many different ways and in this week's episode, we focus on the musical career of singer-songwriter, Paul Henshaw. Paul had a goal to build a business as a performer and to be entirely self-sufficient from it. All was going well having released a new album towards the end of 2019, but we all know what happened soon after. So how did lockdown affect him, as a performer, as a human, and as a business person? What did he do to mitigate the damage? What are his goals for 2021? During this episode, Paul gives us an exclusive performance too. We also finish the podcast with a festive treat, the lyrics of which are at https://freelance-heroes.com/podcasts/. About Paul Henshaw With a catalogue of albums encompassing Henshaw's solo and full band work including the highly acclaimed "Five Compass Lighthouse" released in November 2019, and the 2020 release of the Henshaw & Booth (Dan Booth of Ferocious Dog) duet album “Revisit”, the growth Henshaw has experienced is clear. His songs are written from the heart with life experiences and stories clearly having the biggest influence. Paul Henshaw albums are always a roller coaster of emotions. As a songwriter, Henshaw's lyrics have been likened to poetry, painting scenes that take you on a journey to the very place or situation being sung about, from the sad story of a young man who took his own life or going to an Iron Maiden concert with his 76-year-old Nan. Whether playing solo, with the backing of his band (The Scientific Simpletons) or as the Henshaw & Booth duet, he knows that an exciting and energetic live show is the key to making a performance a personal and memorable one, a message echoed over and over by his established and ever-growing following. Henshaw has shared stages with the likes of Mark Chadwick (The Levellers), Ferocious Dog, Pigeon Detectives, Newton Faulkner, Tony Wright (Terrorvision), Gary Stringer (Reef), and has played numerous festivals including the 2019 Glastonbury Festival. Paul Henshaw is a committed, professional, and experienced songwriter and performer who strives to make interesting music with songs that are deep and drenched in honesty. It wouldn't matter if Newton Faulkner had one hit or not - he'd still be a wonder. Whether it's his inventive and dizzying guitar playing or his stirring, emotive voice, Faulkner has remained one of the more charming and entertaining prospects of the singer-songwriter circuit - both in his native UK and abroad. He's spent most of the last decade working on his terms, outside of the structure of major labels and primarily touring with little more than a pedal board and his tour manager - who also happens to be his sister. What can we learn from the freewheelin' Newton Faulker? Quite a lot, as it turns out. From teenage punk bands to sold-out theatres, there's not much this ginger ninja hasn't done. Working Hands Captivating. Insightful. Raw. These are a few words used to describe Joshua Jarman's songwriting and performances. With performances that each seem personal and unique, Joshua is known for engaging a crowd and gently ushering them through the pains and triumphs of human emotion... at least as he sees it. Treating the acoustic guitar like some forgotten limb, Joshua unveils percussive qualities of the instrument, plays the rhythm structure, and creates lead lines all at once. No loops. One take. His ability to do this while singing leads some to remark his music as surreal. Especially when seen live. Minor chords aided by the thumping heart of the acoustic guitar accompany Joshua's impacting vocals. A conviction that can heard and felt by the listener. Joshua regards this style of playing to the influence of artists like: Jon Gomm, Newton Faulkner, or Andy Mckee. He quotes his muse as 'The benefit of all beings,' and dedicates his work to the relief and understanding of human suffering. "There are reasons that my songs are sometimes sad. Depression has been no stranger to me, nor those around me. But, the Blues are medicinal in music because they are relatable. You never know what healing powers a song can have on the mind. Because music has done so much for me, for my mental health, I owe it to the world to sing these songs." Joshua is an Award Winning Charleston, SC local who has been featured on Fox News, ABC News, Balcony TV, 9 to 5 Magazine, Fix FM and even at local schools. His performances and hosted events numbered over 250 in 2017, helping him gather product endorsements from Shubb Capo Company and Nicola Brand Strings. In this episode we chat to musician, and now actor, Newton Faulkner! Newton's debut album, 'Hand Built by Robots', topped the charts in 2007, deposing Amy Winehouse, with over a million in sales and spending a year in the top 40. Since then Newton has toured extensively, releasing four further albums all to critical acclaim. Newton recently joined the cast of the Green Day musical 'American Idiot', playing the incredibly demanding role of Johnny, so we met up with him to hear how this transition into acting came about. When Newton Faulkner emerged in 2007 he was the fleet-fingered prince of sparkling guitar pop. The 22-year old kid from Surrey had a million-selling, Number One hit with his debut album 'Hand Built By Robots'. Singles 'Dream Catch Me' and 'I Need Something' were the festival sound of the Summer. As were his innovative covers of Massive Attack’s 'Teardrop' and the theme from Spongebob Squarepants. In August 2013, Faulkner released his fourth album, 'Studio Zoo', which was recorded while being streamed live on the internet. The Wyvern Theatre’s Marketing Manager recently spoke to this headline act from Wychwood Festival about Spongebob Squarepants and performing live on stage. Wychwood, The Family Festival, returns to Cheltenham Racecourse for its 10th Birthday in 2014 over the weekend of 30th May – 1st June. The Wyvern Theatre is an official ticket partner to Wychwood Festival. Day and weekend tickets are now on sale at swindontheatres.co.uk
With Kirsty Lang. Another London is a new exhibition at Tate Britain which reveals the capital as seen through the eyes of photographers from all over the world, from 1930 until 1980. The images chart the city's transformation, from bombed- out ruin to punk playground. Craig Taylor, author of Londoners, considers the capital's many changes. Louis Nowra is an acclaimed Australian dramatist, who has written two new plays for BBC Radio 4. He tells Kirsty how a serious head-injury, and being the son of an infamous murderess, have shaped his writing - and why he avoids arty types, preferring instead to have a beer with the labourers in his local bar. Britain's first ever kitchen-sink movie, Woman In A Dressing Gown, is re-released in cinemas this week. Front Row finds out why the film, starring Sylvia Syms and Anthony Quayle, has been neglected for the last 50 years, despite winning several prestigious awards. Newton Faulkner's first album Hand Built by Robots topped the charts in 2007, and his third album Write It on Your Skin did the same earlier this month. He reflects on the impact of parenthood on his music, and why he was star-struck when he met The Proclaimers. Producer Ella-mai Robey.
