The longer you create mokuhanga, the more your individual tastes reveal themselves in your own  work, your style, your ideas, and your unique way of seeing the world. These are the qualities that make a mokuhanga artist or craftsperson shine, and they represent the place many practitioners aspire to reach. On this episode of The Unfinished Print: A Mokuhanga Podcast, I speak with someone who has spent decades refining his style, developing his ideas, and defining his relationship with mokuhanga at the same time exploring a variety of printmaking mediums. Daniel Kelly lives and works in Kyoto, Japan, and for many years his work has been exhibited in galleries all around the world. It can also be found in private collections and in some of the world's most important museums. We discuss Daniel's studies under Tomikichiro Tokuriki and the lasting influence Tokuriki has had on his work. Daniel explains his preference for papers from outside Japan and why he generally avoids using Japanese washi. He also details his creative process, discusses his use of multiple printmaking mediums alongside mokuhanga, and he reflects on the advantages each brings to his practice. We also talk about galleries, selling work, and Daniel's views on tradition—and how, in some cases, it can hold artists back. This liberated approach to colour was short-lived as a movement but had a lasting influence on modern and contemporary art. Synchromism, meaning "with colour," sought to construct painting through colour alone, treating it as the primary driver of form, rhythm, and spatial depth rather than line or traditional representation. Drawing parallels with musical composition, Macdonald-Wright and Russell aimed to create visual "harmonies" where colours functioned like chords, building dynamic and structured relationships across the canvas. The result was one of the earliest American contributions to abstraction, grounded in a systematic exploration of colour as an expressive and structural force. © Popular Wheat Productions logo designed and produced by Douglas Batchelor and André Zadorozny  Introduction music while working - Lester Young / Oscar Peterson  Disclaimer: Please do not reproduce or use anything from this podcast without shooting me an email and getting my express written or verbal consent. In this new series, Unpacking Iconic Homes, we're picking six iconic homes, some that recently went viral and some that have stood the test of time. We'll be discussing design elements, color palettes, items we love, things we would change, and breaking down how to recreate the look on a more realistic budget. In the first episode of our new series, we take a deep dive into Jamie Laing and Sophie Habboo's wildly viral London townhouse renovation - designed by Jojo Barr of House Nine Design - and break down exactly why it works. From colour drenching to honed marble, arches and layered textures, we unpack the design decisions behind one of the internet's most talked-about homes. What we cover Why the house feels luxurious without feeling stiff or untouchable. The deep green, fully colour-drenched north-facing front room - and why dark rooms should sometimes lean into darkness. How texture does the heavy lifting: bouclé, velvet, marble, limewash, linen and natural wood. The kitchen: dramatic countertop, fluted island detailing, panelled ceilings and custom chairs. Why continuity matters - repeated brass finishes, arches and warm earthy tones throughout the house. The bathroom: Viola marble, checkerboard tiles and that huge shower enclosure. The cinema room (the one room we disagree on!) The art of mixing antiques and modern pieces to create a home that feels layered and lived-in. Which elements are timeless - and which might date.Design details & products mentioned: House Nine Design / Jojo Barr  Honed marble finishes  Smallbone kitchen  Bang & Olufsen speakers  Wabi-sabi style pendant lights  Calacatta Viola marble  Ca' Pietra tiles  "Tamarind" by Benjamin Moore "Peat Basket" by ColourtrendKey takeaways Texture is so important!!  Dark rooms can be embraced - not every room needs to be lightened up.  Layering and contrasting natural materials creates warmth and depth. Repetition and continuity make homes feel cohesive. You don't need millions in the bank to recreate, using the principles behind good design. The idea is not to copy celebrity homes exactly - it's about understanding the design thinking behind them, and how to recreate elements of the look in a realistic way.Follow the podcast on Instagram @ripitup_podcast_official, or follow us - Jenny is @workerscottage and Kate is @victorianrathmines

Our guest today is none other than Atul Kochhar, the genius who redefined Indian cuisine in Britain and became the first Indian chef in the world to win a Michelin star. You'll hear Atul laugh about an American guest who demanded “the spiciest dish you can make”—only to then bring his own vial of mysterious black liquid so fiery it nearly sent Atul to Mars. You'll hear the story of him landing in London over 30 years ago, shocked at the state of “curry houses,” and how he helped transform the UK's perception of Indian food from late-night lager fodder to multi-course, white-tablecloth artistry.Atul also opens up about the education that made him: growing up in a Punjabi-Bihari household in Jamshedpur, where neighbours from every corner of India introduced him to a mosaic of regional flavours; moving as a teenager with a single iron trunk to Chennai, where he fell in love with idlis, dosas, and the tang of tamarind; and the brutal but life-changing discipline of the Oberoi Hotel kitchens, where he worked under Thai, Chinese, and French Michelin-starred chefs. These years gave him the precision, speed, and ingredient-driven ethos that he would later use to revolutionise Indian fine dining. And then there's the leap of faith that changed everything: being scouted to London, helping launch Tamarind, and winning that fateful Michelin star. Atul recalls the dizzying pride of the moment—how overnight he became a national hero in India, and how his father, a catering man who'd seen failure more than once, inspired him to push forward even when the business of running restaurants nearly broke him. From early struggles with sourcing the right onions in Britain to discovering the joys of cooking with venison, hare, and game birds, his stories are as textured as the dishes he plates.Of course, no Atul story is complete without the drama of restaurant life. He shares nightmare days where gas pipes flooded on a Saturday service, or worse—the devastating fire that shut down his flagship for six months. He remembers the pain of sitting helpless in insurance limbo, and the joy of loyal friends and partners who stepped in to keep his dream alive. There's humour too—like the “rudest customer” who managed to be offended even when given a bigger table on their anniversary, or his bemusement at Britain's national dish, chicken tikka masala, which he insists is delicious but—make no mistake—a British invention. Atul speaks candidly about adapting menus for a world where more diners are on weight-loss drugs, why smaller plates and non-alcoholic cocktails are the future, and how he sees the new wave of Indian chefs in India itself taking innovation to dazzling heights. There are also tender moments: memories of litti chokha eaten by hand and soaked in ghee, evenings when six Thai chefs “adopted” him as their little brother in Delhi, and the bittersweet guidance of Mrs Khanna, the royal-blooded matriarch who taught him the secrets of true Patiala cuisine.--------- Hosted on Acast. Tamarind trees, they can grow to a very large size and live for a long time. And this Imlitala tree has been here since the time of Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu, who used to come here from Akrūra-ghāt, and he would sit and chant his japa. So nice to know that the founder of the Gauḍīya Sampradāya chants japa. It's a good indication of what's important because he would sit here from early morning time until the late morning, early afternoon, chanting japa under the Imlitala tree. So, you can keep that idea in your mind when you chant japa. Because " tvayy ambujākṣākhila-sattva-dhāmni samādhinā veśita-cetasaiketvat-pāda-potena mahat-kṛtena kurvanti govatsa-padaṁ bhavābdhim (10.2.30)", the demigods praying to Lord Krishna within the womb say we should develop a samadhi on Kṛṣṇa. Why? Because He's the source of everything. And if you give your attention to Kṛṣṇa, "ananya-cetāḥ satataṁ yo māṁ smarati nityaśaḥ tasyāhaṁ su-labhaḥ pārtha nitya-yuktasya yoginaḥ (BG 8.14)", Kṛṣṇa says in Bhagavad-gītā, it is a very easy, simple process—think of me always. And the Bhagavatam verse says cetasaike, make your vision one-pointed, just concentrate on Krishna. Then it says "tvat-pāda-potena mahat-kṛtena, mahat kṛtena". How do you do that? You follow in the footsteps of the mahat, the greats. So, who are the greats? We have Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu, name a few more... Mokuhanga has the ability to take the artist or craftsperson anywhere they would like to be. From the subject matter in their studio to physical movement around the world, teaching, exploring, and discovering. Wonder and beauty is what makes mokuhanga so special.   In this episode of The Unfinished Print, I speak with printmaker Jacqueline Gribbin, who has spent years honing her craft in mokuhanga and other printmaking techniques across Japan, Southeast Asia, and Australia. We discuss her deep connection with Indigenous communities, collaborating with the late Ralph Kiggell, and exploring the nuances of water-based and oil-based mokuhanga. Jaqueline explains her experiences traveling to isolated communities, conducting workshops, and sharing her passion for printmaking. We'll explore her teaching methods, the importance of community in her work, and how she balances creating and selling her prints.   Please follow The Unfinished Print and my own mokuhanga work on Instagram @andrezadoroznyprints or email me at theunfinishedprint@gmail.com  Notes: may contain a hyperlink. Print publishers are given if known. Jacqueline Gribbin - website  Shifting Tides (2022) Nagasawa Art Park (MI Lab) Awaji City - Nagasawa Art Park was an artist-in-residence program located in Awaji City, Hyōgo Prefecture, Japan. It was open for 12 years before evolving into MI Lab in 2012. More info, here.    Keiko Kadota (1942-2017) - was the director of Nagasawa Art Park at Awaji City from 1997-2011, and then of MI Lab at Lake Kawaguchi from 2011 until her passing.   Toru Ueba - was a print instructor at Nagasawa Art Park, and was one of Yoonmi's instructors in 2004.   Ralph Kiggell (1960-2022) -  was one of the most important mokuhanga practitioners. Originally from England, Ralph lived and worked in Thailand. Ralph pushed the boundaries of mokuhanga with extremely large pieces, jigsaw carving, and by using fantastic colour. He also worked with the International Mokuhanga Conference to promote mokuhanga around the world. He will be greatly missed. Ralph's work can be found, here. His obituary in The Guardian can be found, here. His interview with The Unfinished Print can be found, here.     Orange Flower On Blue    Hiroki Satake - is a mokuhanga printmaker, and instructor based in Japan. He has taught at MI Lab, as well as given demonstrations regarding tool sharpening, around the world. Instagram   赤絵(アンドレ・マルティ「狼よ!」より) (2022) 34.7cm×28.4cm   registration - there are several registration methods in mokuhanga. The traditional method is called the kentō registration, where you carve two notches, straight another an "L." There is also a "floating kentō," which is where the notches are cut in a piece of "L" shaped wood and not on the wood where you are cutting your image, hence "floating." Lastly, there are removable "pins," such as ones made by Ternes Burton.    bokashi - is a mokuhanga technique, where the pigment fades from a heavy colour to a softer, broad colour. Made famous by prints designed by Hokusai and Hiroshige, this technique is, for me, the most popular technique utilized by  mokuhanga printmakers. There are various types: Ichimoji-bokashi or straight line graduation, used in the above mentioned Hiroshige and Hokusai prints. Ichimoji-mura-bokashi or straight line gradation with uneven edge. Ō-bokashi or wide gradation, Ate-nashi-bokashi or gradation without definition. Futa-iro-bokashi or two tone gradation, and ita-bokashi or softer-edge gradation, where the block is cut in a specific way to achieve this style of gradation. All of these styles of bokashi technique take practice and skill but are very much doable. Below is a fine example of bokashi by Paul Binnie:     The Torii Gate at Miyajima (2009) 37.5 x 26cm sizing paper - at times mokuhanga printmakers will size their paper. Size is made from water, animal glue (rabbit, horse), and alum. What the size does is keep the pigments the artist uses from “bleeding” into the outer edges of the paper. There are many recipes of size, here is one that artist Walter J. Phillips used.   intaglio printing - is a printing method, also called etching, using metal plates such as zinc, and copper, creating “recessed” areas which are printed with ink on the surface of these "recesses.” More info, here. The MET has info, here.     serigraphy - is another word for the art of silk screen printing. Silk screen printing can be in on various materials, silk, canvas, paper.    lithography: A printing process where images are transferred onto a surface using a flat plate or stone.   Yoshitaka Amano (b. 1952) - is a character designer for the Final Fantasy video game series. He uses ukiyo-e and Japanese woodblock prints as insirpation for some of his work.    Takashi Murakami (b. 1962) is a contemporary artist best known for his fine art works and contributions to the commercial market. His works are heavily influenced by manga and anime, characterized by their bright colors and distinctive style. Multicolour Superflat Flowers - archival pigment print, silkscreen, 45 cm x 17.7cm   Margaret Thatcher 1925-2013) -  was the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 1979 to 1990. She was the first woman to hold the office and remains one of the most influential figures in British political history. Leading the Conservative Party, Thatcher implemented a series of economic policies known as "Thatcherism," which emphasized deregulation, privatization of state-owned industries, and reducing the power and influence of trade unions. Her tenure was marked by significant economic transformation, as well as controversial measures that sparked widespread debate and protest.    Tamarind Institute - was originally founded in Los Angeles in 1960 by June Wayne, and is a world renowned center for fine art lithography. Established to revive and sustain the art of lithography, which was in decline in the United States, Tamarind quickly became a leader in the education and promotion of lithographic techniques. In 1970, the institute moved to the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque, where it continues to thrive as a key institution in the printmaking world. Dedicated to advancing the lithographic arts through rigorous education, collaborative projects, and the production of high-quality prints, the Tamarind Institute's influence extends globally, contributing significantly to the development and appreciation of lithography as a vibrant art form. More info, here.    STPI Creative Workshop & Gallery - which stands for Singapore Thailand Print Institute is an educational gallery and workshop, based in Singapore. 1974's The Tamarind Seed was considered a departure for star Julie Andrews.  After a break to raise her family, Andrews was looking for a role that would reintroduce her to audiences in a new light.  As the 70's were rife with political and paranoid thrillers, she jumped at the chance to play Judith Farrow - a woman reeling from personal tragedy who gets embroiled in a Cold War bait and switch.  It helped that Andrews was being directed by husband Blake Edwards (who also adapted the script from Evelyn Anthony's novel) and her love interest was Omar Sharif.   Dan and Vicky discuss the forgotten thriller alolng with lots of recently seen including Max doc Chowchilla, Netflix's The Brothers Sun, 2024's Mean Girls, Jason Statham actioner The Beekeeper, concert doc Queen Rock Montreal, and Anatomy of a Fall.  Also hear about how Vicky spent her birthday and Dan's time at Virginia Stage Company doing Dial M for Murder. Valpuri, a native of Rovaniemi in Finnish Lapland, graduated from the program in 2009. Every year she directs the research of Tamarind apprentice printers and mentors the next generation of lithographers. Hello, lovely viewers! I'm Rachel, and welcome to a mouth-watering episode of The Keto Vegan. Today, I'm diving into the world of irresistible flavours as I whip up a sensational dish: no-chicken satay skewers. The star of the show? Succulent no-chicken skewers marinated to perfection, soaking up all the aromatic goodness. But wait, the magic doesn't stop there – I'm complementing these skewers with an utterly delectable satay sauce that will leave you wondering why you haven't tried this combo sooner. So, grab your apron and join me in the kitchen as we embark on a culinary adventure, blending the best of keto and vegan worlds into a symphony of flavours. Get ready to indulge in a guilt-free feast that proves you can have it all – deliciousness without compromise. Let's get cooking, Keto Vegan style! Chicken Satay Marinade: 3 tablespoons sesame oil 2 stalks lemongrass (white parts only) 2 cloves garlic (peeled) Bunch of Spring Onions 2 teaspoons ground turmeric 2 teaspoons ground coriander 1 teaspoon chili powder salt to taste 2 tablespoons of Liquid Smoke 2 tablespoons sugar free maple syrup No-Chicken pieces of your choice.  I used 1 pack of What The Cluck and 1 pack of Richmond Chargrilled No-Chicken pieces.  I like both and still can't decide which is my favourite!   Blend all the Marinade ingredients in a food processor. Add a little water or more oil if needed.   Combine the no-chicken and the Marinade together, stir to mix well. Marinate the chicken for 6 hours in the fridge, or best overnight. When ready, thread 3-4 pieces of the no-chicken onto the skewers.   Put them in a baking dish/tray and put in the oven on gas 160C.  Turn every 5 minutes, coating with the marinade until cooked - the size of the pieces and cooking instructions on your protein will give you an idea of how long you should cook them for.   Serve hot with the warm satay sauce.   Satay Sauce: 500ml Coconut cream 1tbs Sesame oil 3 very heaped tbs of smooth Peanut butter 2tsp Garlic paste 1tsp Tamarind paste 2tsp Rice vinegar (in the recording Rachel added 3 and a bit teaspoons but the end flavour was too vinegary! Chili's – to taste. Don't do what Rachel did and put them all in! ¼ tsp Chili powder ¼ tsp Cayenne pepper 2tsp Smoked paprika. 1 tbs Truvia Caster 3tsp Dark soy sauce Juice of half a Lemon Heat all ingredients and only simmer if you need to thicken up the sauce.   Valuable Resources For an extensive list of foods with their carb, fat and protein count, go here: https://www.rachelgtherapy.co.uk/1-what-why-and-how For a keto-vegan start-up menu and shopping list go here: https://www.rachelgtherapy.co.uk/1-what-why-and-how Liquid Smoke – you can buy this from Amazon: 472ml https://amzn.to/3sffA1o Host Bio Rachel, a once morbidly obese individual, experienced a remarkable body transformation through the keto diet. Jenny's Kitchen tamarind chutney was first made on Waiheke Island in 1998 by Jenny Stewart and is now found on shelves all around the country. The inspiration behind the chutney came from a trip to Fiji where Jenny and her husband Hilton were introduced to the tamarind fruit. Jenny then worked on cooking it into a sauce here and was convinced by friends to sell it at their Waiheke Island markets. Now, with Jenny's Kitchen having changed hands to new owners, the popular chutney is sold in stores all over the country. Kathryn speaks with Jenny's Kitchen owner Cathy Knight, who with husband Grant Hunter, bought the operation back in 2014.
