Escuchar audio

My wife Jackie and i look at the top 30 of 14th November 1964. 1964 is one of the great years for chart music and there's certainly some gems in there thisweek.
I was inspired to perform brief instrumental and vocal excerpts from "Days Like These," originally perfomred by Matt Monro. I would like to recommend the 1969 film, The Italian Job, starring Michael Caine and a talented supporting cast, including a gorgeous Miura! The film's soundtrack was produced by Quincy Jones and is on the MCA Records label. It is a fantastic score! You can view photos of the Miura, as described in this episode, on the “Gallery” page of this site. Thanks to the Petersen Automotive Museum, in Los Angeles, for providing the lovely 1968 Miura, which I photographed and posted on the “Gallery” page of this site. If you are in town, I urge you to go to the Petersen Automotive Museum and see it for yourself!
Unsung champions of the Broadway songbook--if you don't know them, you should: Jackie and Roy, Lee Wiley, Buddy Clark, Felicia Sanders, Matt Monro, Cecile McLorin Salvant, and more.

The Beatles: “All things must pass.” What is life. My Sweet Lord. Thanks for the pepperoni. Y mientras tanto… ¡Buenas Vibraciones!
The Standells were a Los Angeles garage band formed in the early 60's, often referred to as an early punk band. The lineup was Larry Tamblyn on organ and vocals, Tony Valentino on guitar, Gary Lane on bass, and former Mouseketeer Dick Dodd on drums and lead vocals. The name came from Tamblyn and Valentino, and referenced their standing around booking agents, trying to get a job.The group made use of their Los Angeles roots by appearing in several low budget films in the 1960's including “Get Yourself a College Girl” in 1964 and the cult classic “Riot on Sunset Strip” in 1967. They also appeared on the television series “The Munsters” as themselves in the episode “Far Out Munster.” They also appeared on The Bing Crosby Show under a pseudonym “The Love Bugs.” The Live Ones EP was recorded in March 1966, and showcases both the sound and the attitude of The Standells. The songs are short like most songs of the era, and make extensive use of the organ in the music. The Standells big hit was “Dirty Water,” a reference to Boston Harbor and Charles River which was notorious for its pollution at the time. Their first major gig was at The Oasis in Honolulu, which may explain the surfer influence. In 1966, The Standells toured with The Rolling Stones. The Standells continue to perform today, though the lineup has changed over time.Mr. NobodyThis song is about a guy hitting on the author's girlfriend. He isn't having any of it. “So you can take your fancy car and drive away real far. The world is full of nobodies like you are.”Why Pick On Me?If you've ever been attracted to a flirtatious girl who is there one moment and gone the next, you can identify with this tune. The lyrics that bring it home are, “candy kisses don't mean a thing if only flies those kisses bring.”Sometimes Good Guys Don't Wear WhiteThis track references the contrast between blue collar workers and white collar workers. When white collar workers thumb their nose at blue collar workers, sometimes the good guy isn't the one wearing white! “Everyday I work Hard. At night I spend restless time. Those rich kids and all their lazy money, they can't hold a candle to mine.”GloriaThe Standells covered this garage band standard by Van Morrison and his band Them. Many bands covered this song, perhaps the most popular of these covers was done by The Doors. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:“Born Free” by Matt Monro (Main Theme to the motion picture “Born Free”)This movie was released in March 1966, and told the tale of a couple who raised a lion cub and released it back into the wild. STAFF PICKS:Batman by Jan and DeanRob starts our staff picks with a cover from the campy cult classic superhero show of the 60's. A number of groups covered the song from the television show. Jan and Dean were football players who met while singing in the shower after practice and decided to form a band. They had a number of surfer inspired hits at the time.I Fought The Law by The Bobby Fuller FourBruce's staff pick is a song covered by The Clash in 1978. The Bobby Fuller Four had success covering this song in 1966, but the original goes back to 1959 when Sonny Curtis recorded it with the Crickets after he took the place of the late Buddy Holly. Just six months after the song hit the charts, Bobby Fuller was found dead from asphyxiation in his mother's car. The death was ruled a suicide, but many believe he was murdered. The Ballad of the Green Berets by Staff Sargent Barry SadlerBrian's staff pick is a positive, popular patriotic song. This would prove an unusual popular song as the protest song became more entrenched in rock music. This was the number 1 song of 1966. Barry Sadler released an album by the end of the year, though none of his other songs would prove as popular. I Spy (for the FBI) by Jamo ThomasWayne's closes out our staff picks this week with a Chicago group taking a Motown feel. It peaked at number 98 in the US, though it did slightly better in the UK. INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:Hi Heel Sneaker by the Ramsey Lewis TrioWe close out this episode with a jazzy number from Chicago-based Ramsey Lewis.
Love, as Matt Monro sung, "Is A Many Splendored Thing." To find love is one of the greatest feelings in the world, but many people run from it because of fear of being hurt or rejected or letting someone into their hearts and/or spaces or for a variety of other reasons. How would it feel or how different would you life be if you'd just let yourself go and allow yourself to become vulnerable -- all in the name of L-O-V-E?

Matt Monro was an English singer who was affectionately known as "the singing bus driver".An important influence on his early career was the pianist Winifred Atwell, who became his mentor, provided him with his stage name and helped him sign with Decca Records. He sadly passed away from liver cancer in 1985 but left us with a beautiful legacy in his music.

For only the second time the club hosted 2 pianos, this podcast is a real treat not only with 2 of the UK's finest pianists but also Mike Hatchard's openness and great humour. We hope you enjoy the podcast. Mike Hatchard has had an extraordinarily diverse career as a musician. He began as the pianist for the National Youth Jazz Orchestra, and studied piano under Peter Wallfisch and composition with Philip Cannon at the Royal College of Music (winning the composer's prize). Subsequently he toured America as Cleo Laine's accompanist as a member of the John Dankworth Quintet and became Matt Monro's youngest ever musical director. However, a penchant for cartooning and comedy made his career take some unexpected turns. He invented a character ‘Marvin Hanglider', and for many years performed at the Edinburgh Festival, described in the Scotsman as a ‘fringe staple.' This led to cabaret on many of the world's top cruise liners and tours of India and Europe. Having composed literally thousands of songs over the years, often appearing on BBC Local Radio making up songs on the spot for people who phone in, he is delighted to at last have some of his work published by Kevin Mayhew. Mike drew cartoons for Carlton TV's ‘After the News' and made his own chat show for CTV. He toured as musical director for comedienne Pamela Stephenson, and co-wrote songs with Frankie Howerd and Spike Milligan. For many years he was closely associated with Herbie Flowers (of Sky fame) which included all sorts of work in prisons, in schools and at the Southbank (Mike has also performed his one man show twice at the Purcell Rooms) and in disabled centres. He has also worked with David Essex, the Pasadena Roof Orchestra, Barbara Thompson's Paraphernalia, the Syd Lawrence Orchestra, Julia Migenes Johnson, Liane Carroll, Alan Barnes, George Martin and Tina May. Recently his career went full circle when he was asked to compere Cleo Laine's eighty-fifth birthday concert at Wavendon, and also appeared alongside Cleo in the celebrated Christmas Shows to packed audiences. As well as being in demand as a jazz musician and raconteur, Mike plays a good deal of classical music. He regularly does educational and community projects for the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra and is resident pianist with the Chamber Ensemble of London. He has taught at Trinity College Summer School and Dartington International Summer School as well as at Worth Abbey. Mike recently went back to something he did a lot of in his youth – painting – and has had a few exhibitions mainly on the South Coast. Thanks to Kevin Mayhew for the bio. En el terreno del musical escribió entre otras “LOS CABALLEROS LAS PREFIEREN RUBIAS”, "GYPSY”, “SUGAR”, “THE RED SHOES”, “FUNNY GIRL”, “TWO ON THE AISLE”, “SAY DARLING”, “DO-RE-MI”, “SUBWAYS ARE FOR SLEEPING”, “FADE OUT, FADE IN”, “HALLELUJAH, BABY” por la que ganaría el Tony, “BELLS ARE RINGING” o “BAR MITZVAH BOY”. This week, John Williams returns for another "The Music of Bond" interview. Matt Monro Jr. joins us to talk about his father, Bond, From Russia With Love and a whole lot more. Sit back and enjoy a chat with the man with a unique perspective on one of the most classic Bond themes.
Experiencing a massive re-think just now concerning world cinema! This has been occasioned in part by watching every disc one can get one's hands on of the recently released catalogue of British "Vintage Classics". Have you ever heard of "Mandy" (1951)? Or "The Captive Heart" (1946)? Or "The Sound Barrier" (1952)? Or "The Maggie" (1954)? Or "The Angry Silence" (1960)? Or "Melody" (1971)? -- which, incidentally, was the source material for "Moonrise Kingdom" (2012) by Wes Anderson. What you find out as you view these priceless expressions of popular art is that you've probably been wrong to idolize, almost to the exclusion of other expressions, the "cool" movies of the French 'New Wave' or the British 'Kitchen Sink'/'Angry Young Man' school. I, for one, got so mesmerized, "When I Was Young" (Eric Burdon and the Animals, 1967), by the narrative of art as "transgression", as the angry denunciation of boundaries and establishments, that I failed to recognize a whole host of other expressions -- and in particular, expressions of human drama that were redemptive and optimistic rather than bitter and enraged. Just compare Matt Monro with Sid Vicious. Or Terence Rattigan with John Osborne. Or "Shag" (1989) with "The Graduate" (1968). (Boy, was I ever seduced by "The Graduate". Yet now I look at it, all brightly done up by the Criterion Collection, and see a superficial swipe at ... the Presbyterian Church!) So here's a little word in favor of happiness, fun, and seaside romance. Did you miss out?

It can certainly be safe to say that the 1960s produced some of the most dramatic changes in the world of popular music. From the early days of rock and roll, through to the swinging beat scene, the British invasion, American surf music and right through to the San Francisco sound of the peace and love generation, there was a voice that was there from the beginning. That voice was still there at the end of the decade and beyond. Sadly that voice is largely unknown to today’s generation. Some of today’s kids would probably only be vaguely familiar with it if they are fans of some of the biggest and most popular movies to come out of that decade. Matt Monro was described as the UK’s answer to Frank Sinatra, a label he detested. For Matt Monro was not an answer to anything. Matt Monro was unique, he was his own entity, had his own marvellous style, and was possibly the finest male popular music singer the UK has ever produced. Natacha Atlas - Yalla Chant Edit By Petko Turner Most of Natacha Atlas' earlier albums were produced by Tim Whelan and Hamilton Lee from Transglobal Underground. Diaspora (1995), Halim (1997) (in honour of Egyptian singer Abdel Halim Hafez), Gedida (1998) and Ayeshteni (2001). Atlas has always spoken her mind about the way both she and Transglobal Underground were seen by the UK press back in the late 90s/early 2000. "Someone from the New Musical Express rang us about a feature we're to do with them and said 'We don't want it to be about the multi-cultural angle'. In other words that fad is over. And I'm personally insulted... what other angle is there for us?! I get sick of it all." In 1999, Atlas collaborated with David Arnold on the song "One Brief Moment". The single featured a cover version of the James Bond theme song from the film You Only Live Twice. Two years earlier, Atlas had collaborated with Arnold on the album Shaken and Stirred, recording the song "From Russia with Love" for the eponymous film(originally performed by Matt Monro). Also in 1999, she collaborated with Jean Michel Jarre for the track "C'est La Vie" on his album Métamorphoses. The track was released as a single. In 2003, Atlas provided vocals for the Kolo folk dance song "'Ajde Jano" on Nigel Kennedy and Kroke's album, East Meets East. In 2005, Atlas contributed the song "Just Like A Dream" (from Something Dangerous) to the charity album Voyces United for UNHCR. Her music has been used in a number of soundtracks. Her song "Kidda" was featured on the Sex and the City 2 soundtrack and in the 2005 video game Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories on Radio del Mundo. In 2003, her voice is heard in Hulk in the song "Captured“. Additionally, her song "Bathaddak" is one of the songs included in the 2007 Xbox 360 exclusive video game Project Gotham Racing 4. Her cover of I Put a Spell On You was used in the 2002 film Divine Intervention by Palestinian director Elia Suleiman. Atlas was originally billed to star in and provide the soundtrack to the film Whatever Lola Wants, directed by Nabil Ayouch. However, shooting delays caused Atlas to only be involved in the film's soundtrack. Her song "Gafsa" (Halim, 1997) was used as the main soundtrack during the Korean film Bin-Jip (also known as 3-Iron) (2004) by Kim Ki-Duk. She participated in the piece "Light of Life (Ibelin Reprise)" for the soundtrack of Ridley Scott's Kingdom of Heaven. In 2007, Atlas collaborated with Belinda Carlisle for Belinda's seventh album Voila. She contributed additional vocals on songs "Ma Jeunesse Fout Le Camp," "La Vie En Rose", "Bonnie et Clyde" and "Des Ronds Dans L'Eau." Voila was released via Rykodisc in the U.K. on 5 February 2007 and in the U.S. the following day. The 2007 film Brick Lane features four songs with vocals by Atlas, "Adam's Lullaby", "Running Through the Night", "Love Blossoms" and "Rite of Passage". On 23 May 2008 Atlas released a new album, Ana Hina, which was well received by critics. In 2008, two of Atlas' songs, "Kidda" and "Ghanwa Bossanova", were used in Shamim Sarif's romantic comedy about two women, I Can't Think Straight. In 2008, she sang lead in the song "Habibe" from Peter Gabriel's long-awaited album and project, Big Blue Ball. On 20 September 2010 Atlas released Mounqaliba. Co-produced by Samy Bishai, it explored classical instrumentation, jazz and traditional Arabic styles and was inspired by the poems of Indian poet Rabindranath Tagore. She is also composing the music for Francoise Charpat's upcoming film. In May 2013, Natacha Atlas released Expressions: Live in Toulouse, an album which showcased her expressive voice using largely orchestral arrangements augmented by Middle Eastern percussion.
The question this week is whether Waits is walking away from a long-term lover or a one-night-stand, as Vera, Sam and Martin take one last longing backwards look at Heartattack And Vine before walking away and catching a train. There's some discussion across the gender perspective here as well, with the boys buying into some of Waits's romance while Vera reminds us that it takes two to tango… or at least it should. Song by Song is Martin Zaltz Austwick and Sam Pay; two musicians listening to and discussing every single Tom Waits track in chronological order. website: songbysongpodcast.com twitter: @songbysongpod e-mail: songbysongpodcast@gmail.com Music extracts used for illustrative/review purposes include: Ruby’s Arms, Heartattack And Vine, Tom Waits (1980) Softly, As I Leave You, Single, Matt Monro (1962) We think your Song by Song experience will be enhanced by hearing, in full, the songs featured in the show, which you can get hold of from your favourite record shop or online platform.

Kirsty's castaway this week is the conductor and composer Harry Rabinowitz. His list of credits and collaborations read like a Who's Who of 20th century music - Gracie Fields, Charles Aznavour, Andrew Lloyd Webber, Matt Monro & Barbra Streisand are only a handful of the stellar names who've benefitted from his talents. He's conducted a lot of movie scores too, including Chariots of Fire and The Talented Mr Ripley; indeed the late director Anthony Minghella described him as "the UK's best kept secret". It wasn't an illustrious start; his first job was playing sheet music for prospective customers in a Johannesburg department store - he was fired after 6 weeks. His first go at conducting was enhanced not by an elegant baton of the finest Maplewood but a rolled up old newspaper. He's almost a hundred years old now, still plays the piano every day and only retired from the concert platform six years ago at the age of 94. Producer: Sarah Taylor.

'Lost' actor Jeff Fahey tells about his work with refugees in Syria, the woman who invented the phrase explains why a dog is for life not just for Christmas, and we hear how the world's wackiest records are checked out in South America. Plus your Thanks and Sir Cliff Richard's Inheritance Tracks.
