RACHEL PORTMANBritish composer Rachel Portman became the first woman composer to win an Academy Award, which she received for her work on EMMA. She is also the first woman composer to win a Primetime Emmy Award, for her work on BESSY. Rachel is currently collaborating with three-time Emmy nominated composer Jon Ehrlich on the Hulu Holocaust drama WE WERE THE LUCKY ONES. With over a hundred film scores, other credits include THE DUCHESS, OLIVER TWIST, ONE DAY, BELOVED, THE VOW, GODMOTHERED, LIFE IS SWEET, and THEIR FINEST. Rachel also ventures into stage productions, like the musical LITTLE HOUSE ON THE PRAIRIE and an opera of THE LITTLE PRINCE for Houston Grand Opera. She has received two further Academy Nominations for THE CIDER HOUSE RULES and CHOCOLAT, which also earned her a Golden Globe Nomination.  In 2023 she received her second Primetime Emmy Award for JULIA. Beyond film, she's composed for concerts and solo piano albums, such as “Ask the River” (2020), “Eden” (2021), “Beyond the Screen” (2023) and “Tipping Points” (2024).  West Sussex-born Rachel Portman, a composer since age 14, studied music at the University of Oxford. Given an OBE in 2010, Rachel is an honorary fellow of Worcester College, Oxford, and a Fellow of the Royal College of Music. JON EHRLICHWith nearly a thousand primetime television episodes scored and three Primetime Emmy nominations, Jon Ehrlich is a highly accomplished composer with a prolific list of scoring credits encompassing a broad range of projects. Writer and resident Gilbert & Sullivan expert Julia Sirmons joins to discuss Mike Leigh's 'Topsy-Turvy', a story of the aforementioned musical duo and the production of one of their most popular shows, 'The Mikado'. It's a film that feels at once like an outliler in Leigh's career up to that point (his first film not set in contemporary working-class London) and a pitch-perfect culmination of many of his career-long explorations. We begin with a discussion about the legacy of director Mike Leigh, his unusual method for drawing brilliant performances from his ensemble of some of the very best British actors, and his trademark style and narrative construction. Then, we unpack the works of Gilbert & Sullivan, exploring Topsy-Turvy's commitment to authenticity in its recreation of 19th century English theater culture, and the wise decision to focus the film on a particularly unstable moment in the long collaboration between the wordsmith and composer. Finally, we discuss the film's evocation of art and its production process, emphasizing the granular repetition of the work as well as the undergirding capitalist mechanics that necessitated performers assume a strong identity as a collective labor force. Latrissa Thomas and I have quite a bit in common!!  From script writing to movies and 3D animation, a lot of our creativity seems to be cut from the same cloth!!  I had such a wonderful time getting to know who she is as a person and as a creator!   I want to take a second to give a shout out to Cathy Heller and everyone at Catch the Moon Music!!!  They are about to embark on another 5 day songwriting challenge and I am so excited to see all of the new faces that will be there to learn what every single person who has been on this podcast, including Latrissa, learned over the course of the last couple of years collectively!!  For anyone on the fence about joining, you literally have nothing to lose and EVERYTHING to gain!!! Episode #25 Sweet Dani B Life is Sweet with Dani Fiori   (Photo Courtesy of The Martha Stewart Show) What a happy photo with Dani, Martha and the adorable decorated sugar cookies. I love the candy and sprinkles Dani uses to make them. The display with the jars is a very smart way to display holiday cookies, The only problem I have with this display is that everyone will eat the cookies before the holiday arrives. I think I'll take the snowman and gingerbread man with the tree or Santa and the reindeer. I have an idea, let's all share all the cookies! (Photo Courtesy of Martha Stewart Living) Here it is! The Martha Stewart Holiday Cutters is a fun set of cookie cutters. I love how Dani decorated them. Look at that cute little Santa cookie with his friends the deer, snowman, and partridge in a pear tree. This set of cookies is adorable! I love the way Dani decorated them. When you look at each cookie you can tell they're decorated by Sweet Dani B. The way she adds sprinkles and candy to each cookie is her signature design. It's hard to find these cookie cutters but if you want the Santa, Dani has decorated one that's similar. You can find Santa with Bag Cookie Cutter at Copper Gifts. She also has a Mrs. Clause Cookie Cutter. She has a lot of cookie cutters she's designed at CopperGifts.com. I purchased her Yeti cutter back in September and I'm looking forward to decorating him soon. There he is! That little Santa Cookie-The One That Started it All for me. I remember watching The Martha Stewart Show and seeing Dani decorate those cute little Santa Cookies with those magic little decorating bottles. I had never seen the decorating bottles and I was amazed. As I watched how Dani added each color of royal icing to the cookie and then added sprinkles I was hooked! Dani and Santa touched my heart and changed my career. Thank you, Dani, for showing me how to decorate cookies and start my own cookie journey. Making cookies is a great way to share happiness and cookie love. Dani Fiori started Sweet Dani B Cookie Kitchen and Petite Party Studio about 2 years ago. I've enjoyed watching her in her shop online and how she teaches adult and kid workshops to show others how to decorate. Dani knows how to share the cookie love to everyone. Looking at the photos you can see the love Dani puts into her cookies and her shop. She's made it feel warm and welcoming and a place I'd want to visit every day. The only thing stopping me is the shop is in New York and I'm in East Tennessee. Maybe one day I'll get to visit, decorate, and share a chocolate chip cookie with her. Oh yeah, did I mention Dani is an Emmy Winner? This girl has serious skills! Here is Dani with her husband Keith at the ribbon cutting ceremony at Sweet Dani B Cookie Kitchen and Petite Party Studio. In the podcast, Dani mentioned that Keith painted and made things for the shop. He painted "Life is Sweet" on the cafe wall and it's beautiful. What a sweet couple! Dani talked about working as a waitress and at Ralph Lauren during the podcast. That must have been super exciting. I'm glad her career changed and brought her into the cookie world. Her cookies are cute and well designed and full of love. She gave me the tips on how to start decorating which led to The Bearfoot Baker Blog, 100 Animal Cookies Book, The Power of a Cookie, and The Cookie Network. Sugar could be described as a pure carbohydrate, used all around the world to sweeten food. Most people are unaware of how many varieties of sugar are available.Conventional sugar is mainly obtained from the juice of sugar cane, but can also be made from the sucrose of the sugar beet.There are alternative sweeteners such as bee’s honey, date sugar, palm sugar and maple sugar (obtained from maple tree sap). And of course, there are countless sugar substitutes, from the highly artificial ‘Saccharine’ to the natural ‘Stevia’, which also comes from a plant.There are a few different types of the cane variety of sugar which can be attributed to the level of refinement. One of the least refined is raw sugar, which has been coloured with molasses.The most common and all-purpose sugar is bleached white granulated sugar, but it can’t be used in some baking.Therefore, it is refined further into the smaller caster sugar crystals. Further grinding of white sugar produces a powder called icing sugar. Icing sugar is used in cake decorating and to sweeten cream, as it dissolves instantly.One of my favourites for bakery is raw caster sugar, which has a richer flavour than the white caster.Salted Butterscotch SauceWhen I think of cooking with sugar, I can’t go past the rich and decadent salted butterscotch sauce. It’s incredibly easy to make and can be served with almost any dessert, such as sticky date pudding, deep fried ice-cream or bread and butter pudding.•200mlcream•180gbrown sugar•70gbutter•15mlvanilla extract•pinchsalt1.Combine the cream, sugar and butter in a saucepan and heat until it starts to boil.2.Remove from the heat and whisk until completely emulsified. 3.At this stage you could add a dash of vanilla extract and a pinch of salt for depth of flavour. 4.Or, for an interesting twist, stir in a couple of spoons of peanut butter – yum!
