Today I'm chatting with the wonderful Tarin Calmeyer. Tarin and I met when we were training to become yoga teachers and, thanks to the way she said 'hello', became instant friends. Tarin was all set for a career in dance, but an injury meant her path changed direction. She has studied Osteopathy, consulted 5-star resorts on their wellness programs, and lived all over the world. In 2020, Tarin and her partner (now husband) were separated for 10 months due to lockdown, and to stay connected, started meditating together online. This sparked an idea that turned into them co-founding Remote Team Wellness, providing virtual employee wellness programs for companies across the globe, including Dell, Netflix and Microsoft, to name a few. Tarin and I chat life seasons, being (perhaps a little too) comfortable with change, her take on wellness in the corporate sector, and how business owners can genuinely support their employees wellbeing.Connect with Tarin on instagram at: instagram.com/tarincalmeyerAnd check out Remote Team Wellness at remoteteamwellness.comLet's Connect!I'd love to hear from you. South African born, Tarin Calmeyer, is a Virtual Corporate Wellness Specialist. She's the founder and chief wellness office of Los Angles-based company: Remote Team Wellness. We catch up with her living her dream life in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico! Today, we're talking about the importance of taking time for self-care and some easy ways to improve your mental health. After traveling extensively as a young girl with her missionary parents, she moved to the U.S for for high school and immersed herself into becoming a professional dancer. However, that dream suddenly ended when she experienced a debilitating injury at a critical stage in her career. Tarin was forced to carve out her own path of healing turning to yoga and osteopathy, where she discovered a new passion for mind-body integration. Recognizing that the body has an innate ability to heal, she trained as an Osteopath herself. All of this has contributed to the work she's doing now, consulting for huge, well-known companies such as Netflix, Meta (Facebook) and Cisco to support their employees' mental health. She continues to promote remote wellness today. Tarin was later adopted by a white South African couple at age 11. Influential Groups Tarin was born and raised in the midst of “this very hateful bubble” of apartheid in South Africa, and she often felt ‘othered,' even though she had people in her life who loved her. Dancing as a young girl taught her to work with her physical, mental, and emotional health, shaping her into the wellness-focused individual she is today. Tarin was raised in Christianity, but has found yoga to be an all-encompassing practice which has helped her explore other spiritual practices. Temperament and Personality InfluencesTarin believes she was born with a calm and patient temperament, and was an introvert. As an adult, she has worked to be more extroverted. As an only child, Tarin claims she always wanted to prove her point, but eventually learned through life experience and marriage that “you can't be right all the time.”Cultural EpiphaniesTarin has realized that she won't necessarily fit in with those who look like her. She also learned through teaching yoga that not everyone is focused on self-care and wellness. Advice to an Employer Openness to change, to another person's perspective, and to growth are values that excite Tarin in working with others, which help everyone move forward towards their goals.More Great Insights! How to support wellness when your organisation works remotely? The opportunities and challenges facing managers who want to provide holistic support for employees' well-being are discussed in this fascinating podcast with Tarin Calmeyer. Tarin describes wellness as a way of looking at your whole life - financial, social, physical, spiritual etc, and describes wellness as an optimal state of thriving. Tarin also shares about the, now more widely known but possibly not so widely practised, science of breathing. The breath is the single most important way to bring yourself into a state of productivity and creativity, because it takes you out of your head and into your body; into your rest, digest and destress parasympathetic nervous system. Breathing brings us into the now, and out of living mentally in the past or the future, being driven by our fight or flight sympathetic nervous system. Tarin shares examples of the impact her online wellness sessions have had on organisations, and why wellness should be an intrinsic part of work culture, whether we are office-based or work remotely. Wellness is about effective, healthy habits for life. Your life, all sides of it. Your workplace has a huge impact on your wellness, and vice versa: an organisation will run so much better when team members are well. Tarin Calmeyer makes this clear from various angles. She is a corporate wellness specialist, the founder of Remote Team Wellness, a multipassionate and multidimensional human being, and a global citizen. Wellness means so much more than a 15-minute workout or one-time meditation event in the office. Not only is it Mental Health & Mindfulness Physical Fitness Emotional Wellness Financial Wellness Occupational Wellness Tarin too often hears the question “How do we make people more productive without burning out?” It's actually this question that is the biggest change needed to wellness. People are not machines. Burnout is coming from productivity culture, hustle culture. This mentality is in dire need of change. For organisations, this means creating a wellness practice. Wellness requires a culture and mentality that values human beings. For you as an individual, wellness is a journey. That means ritualising wellness into our everyday lives. Allowing ourselves to look at ourselves as multidimensional human beings. Get it into your every day in every way. How? Start by taking a breath. Then another. Your breath is the one constant thread that runs through your entire life. It can be the thing that shifts your state immediately. It is your own check-in point. The simplest things can be the most potent. Allow yourself to show up as the fullest version of yourself. That's what life is all about. Live yours.
