Working Remote or Working in The Office - Both Come with Challenges Hi, everyone. Carl Gould here with your #70secondCEO. Just a little over a one-minute investment every day for a lifetime of results. Policies are good for everybody except for the person with the open door, because they get interrupted. So you have to have boundaries, whether it's a work environment or a home environment. Either way, what happens, though, is it's more mindset. When you're home, you have the laundry, you have the cleaning lady coming over,  you have the dog that's climbing on your keyboard screen. There are certain things that you have at home that you just don't have at work, and vice versa.  What people will argue is they'll say, well, I don't have the commute. I don't have all the time getting dressed. I don't have the train ride or the bus ride or the drive. So there are conveniences to being home. Well, what you miss out on is all of the collaboration, right?  So if everybody's remote and they're in all parts of the country, but the company needs the team to come together and collaborate on something, come up with something new, review where we've been as a company, they don't have that luxury, and you lose out on the brainstorming. We do a lot of these meetings with our clients,  and the difference between people Zooming in to a collaboration meeting versus being in the same room with each other is night and day. It's not even close. Like and follow this podcast so you can learn more. My name is Carl Gould, and this has been your #70secondCEO.

Teams that are true to their mission but adapt to market shifts can become durable, long-term value creators. Learning how to adapt is difficult and uncomfortable, but having a supportive team surrounding you will make it easier. “It's about getting people together, about helping them get along.” Robin emphasizes the importance of having a good mentor in the early stages of your career who will support and push you into being a better employee and, in return, becoming a great mentor to others. The fulfillment in your career comes from enjoying the process and the relationships, not just the end result. The value of in-person collaboration. The transition back to daily office life since COVID has proven that working remotely is efficient. Still, in-person work promotes collaboration and team building, which fosters a richer working environment and a healthier work-life balance.

Drew Neisser on Connecting in a Working Remote World [Podcast]

Compliance Perspectives

By Adam Turteltaub In 1984 I went to my friend Chris's wedding, and one of the other groomsmen, Drew Neisser (LinkedIn), his then boss, talked me into pursuing a career in advertising. Just a few months shy of 40 years later, I caught a video on LinkedIn of him with chief marketing officers discussing the struggles of managing remote workers. It didn't matter that these were marketing people, the problems sounded just like we in compliance face. So, I asked Drew, who is the founder of CMO Huddles and the author of the book Renegade Marketing:  12 Steps to Building Unbeatable B2B Brands, to sit down and do a podcast on the topic. Drew points out that, despite workers being required to come into the office more often, there is still a cost to remote work. Churn is higher than before. Partners at law firms complain that their associates are years behind in their development, likely due to the inability to learn by osmosis. So what do we do? He recommends that we recognize the present reality and look to hire self-starters. People who need a great deal of hand holding will not work out in a world where their managers are miles, if not hundreds of miles, away. Second, make sure the team understands what the organization's business is. Then, help them connect, intellectually and emotionally, with it. If they don't, then it's just another job to them. Incorporate virtual bonding activities, but also try to get the team together in person. That effort creates culture and connection. Looking outside your team, he recommends four tactics: Meet, ideally in person. Get to know your colleagues, and understand their business priorities. Focus on helping them solve their problems. Track all the people you want to meet and influence. Then, take active steps to connect with them and get to know them. Share something about yourself and encourage them to do the same. Get to know the person and stay in touch. For example, send them over articles you think they would find of interest based on what you learned about them. Join formal and informal work groups. If there is a team forming to tackle a problem, be a part of it. But also look to book groups and other less structured ways to connect. Throughout, he advises thinking of yourself as an impact player and a business leader. Finally, he advises understanding how people want to communicate these days, and meet them there. The era of relying solely on email are done, especially for the younger generation. Listen in for some very good insights for compliance officers from a career marketer.

Remember when work was a place we went? And, remember when zoom only meant going fast or, if you are from my generation, a goofy PBS children's TV show? For many of us, working virtually is the new normal. For others, it's back to the office or a hybrid of virtual and real life. What are the implications of working from home? How does it affect the employee? How does it affect the company? What are some ways to create win-win scenarios for corporations and employee well-being as it relates to working in person versus virtually? I'm so happy you and I get to learn from one of the best: Harvard Business Review's Chief Human Resource Officer, Angela Cheng-Cimini. As you'll hear, Angela is the perfect person to engage at a high level about these and other nuanced considerations that keep employees and their companies functioning at their best. So, listen in as Angela and I talk about the mental health implications of working remotely vs in-person or hybrid.

Focus is one of the most powerful tools and invaluable resources.  A focused human being can't be stopped, topped, or matched by anyone else unless that person is just as focused and driven.   A lot of people struggle with this nowadays, especially with the trajectory of technology. Something that will help you is to establish a "No Ambush" rule in your life to avoid being distracted from your goals. Set boundaries and don't let yourself get ambushed. An example of this is a loan officer who only allows one hour of questions each day. After that hour expires, it's back to work!    Key Lessons Establish a “No Ambush” rule to avoid distractions and stay focused. Set boundaries and don't let yourself get ambushed. Take the Zero to 100 challenge at G Code for a chance to win prizes and become the most productive version of yourself. Summary Establish a "No Ambush" rule in your life to stay focused and productive. Whether it's with family, employees, or coworkers, create a rule that you can't be disturbed unless it's an emergency. Staying focused will help you reach your goals   A loan officer taught the author the importance of setting boundaries and avoiding "ambushes" by allowing them one hour of questions each day. To become the most productive version of yourself, set boundaries, and don't let yourself get ambushed. Take the Zero to 100 challenge at Gcode.phonesites.com to win prizes!   HOW TO GET INVOLVED:  This planet is based on an algorithm and with every positive action, there is an adverse reaction.  Ryan Stewman rose and overcame a life of addiction, imprisonment, divorce, and circumstances that would break the spirit of the average human being.  He went on to create a powerful network of winners and champions in life and business creating a movement quickly changing lives one day at a time.  Learn more at: www.JoinTheApex.com   Check out this show and previous killer episodes of the ReWire Podcast in Apple Podcasts.

Liam Martin, who co-founded and runs Timedoctor and Staff.com, is an avid proponent of remote work and co-organizer of the Running Remote conference. Liam draws on much personal experience learning the asynchronous mindset and optimizing designing processes to enable “deep work” by distributed teams. For the new book he co-authored, Running Remote, Liam researched how remote pioneers built their businesses. He shares high level and granular advice, including useful tools and practices for organizations interested in improving their hybrid models or going fully remote.     KEY TAKEAWAYS   [03:30] Liam left home at fifteen to compete internationally for Canada in ice dance.   [04:39] Liam suffers a career-ending shattered kneecap which forced him to refocus his life at 19.   [07:28] Growing up in international training centers left Liam with no High-School diploma.   [08:45] The discipline required to compete at the highest level of sports can be useful in other fields, such as business.   [09:40] Liam starts teaching as a lecturer at McGill but discovers entrepreneurship is a better fit.   [12:10] 6 For those interested in entrepreneurship but thinking about college after high school, Liam shares his opinion based on his own experience.   [13:29] Liam discusses what he worked out about the mechanics of business.   [14:23] Key learnings as Liam was forced into a remote business early on.   [16:07] The tutoring business hit an issue tracking work which Liam and his new business partner, Rob Rawson, created a new venture to solve.   [17:20] They launch the Running Remote conference in 2018 to support people wanting to build and scale fully remote companies.   [18:16] In 2018, there were only seven companies with over 1000 people that were fully-remote.   [19:07] In his book, Running Remote, Liam explains how remote pioneers have a different methodology to running their businesses.   [20:17] The Future of Work is trending to be mostly hybrid, but distance bias must be overcome.   [21:20] Leaders are choosing to work remotely certain days to mitigate distance bias.   [22:34] Asynchronous management is the key methodology remote pioneers implemented - the ability to be able to communicate without directly interacting with someone synchronously.   [23:47] To deploy a hybrid work model successfully, Tenet 1: Deliberate over-communication.   [25:06] Liam starts interacting with “on-premise” organizations and is very surprised at the lack of documentation for everything.   [27:03] Tenet 2 - Democratized workflows – the ability to have information available to everyone.   [27:37] Relinquishing control of information is difficult, but it enables better decision-making.   [28:54] Tenet 3 – Really detailed metrics – the most difficult part.   [29:23] If process documentation feels overwhelming, Liam advises starting with an asynchronous week.   [30:41] More than 95% of process documents are never accessed. Is this an opportunity for ChatGPT?   [32:23] The number one reason companies failed to become fully (90%) asynchronous.   [33:40] The system needs to become the manager then managers can focus on people.   [34:34] Weekly iterations are ideal, biweekly at the most.   [36:08] Liam's book “Running Remote” is “Deep Work” (by Cal Newport) for organizations—emphasizing people working independently.   [38:17] Most asynchronous—remote first—organizations Liam spoke with for the book target ~10% of synchronous communication per day.   [39:12] Synchronous communication for fully-remote and hybrid organizations is currently probably around 40-50%, which is too high to be effective.   [40:32] Liam believes that synchronous may allow better communication and development of ideas in the startup phase, but asynchronous management is much more effective to scale a company.   [42:19] 13% of all remote workers are customer support reps. From onboarding to training asynchronous can do it better and faster.   [44:06] Liam's goal is to reduce meetings and give people back hours of work time.   [45:29] Their rule about being able to walk out if a meeting isn't valuable—Liam finds it effective.   [46:50] Liam is unclear where we are going post-COVID since 14% of the US economy involves corporate real estate.   [51:28] Liam shares the tools he uses to manage projects, record, document, and collect information.   [55:28] IMMEDIATE ACTION TIP: Optimize for work rather than meetings. Use effective asynchronous enabling tools including a project management system to be able to document information, and others to establish new processes that reduce live interactions.     RESOURCES   Liam Martin on LinkedIn  Instagram @liamremote Twitter @liamremote Liam's book Running Remote TimeDoctor.com The Running Remote conference on Youtube Future Forum by Slack Deep Work by Cal Newport.   Tools mentioned: Loom Asana Trainual Fellow     QUOTES   “Education wasn't the goal for me, it was entrepreneurship.”   “The mechanics of running a business is just bureaucracy, unfortunately. The reality is that you can actually cheat your way up until the Dunbar number, which is about 150 people.”   “Distance bias posits that as you get closer to a manager or a decision maker, you then have better access to decision making.”   “The CEO of the company has all of this information in their head, and that's usually the person that ends up making these very serious decisions. Inside an autonomous meritocracy, you empower everyone to make their best decisions and be as autonomous as humanly possible, they need as much information as they can consume. Well, when you give everyone else that same amount of information, magically the CEO isn't a genius anymore.”   “I would define synchronous as a lazy form of communication, which lacks documentation and produces an environment where 10 years down the road, you've got all of these people that are doing things but have no idea what they're doing or what goal they're serving.”   “Inside remote organizations, there is a digital paper trail for everything, because you're forced to actually produce that.”

While he travels around the world a few times a year, he usually spends time in Austin, Las Vegas, and Ubud. He encourages others to work remotely while he's on his travels.
