Are you struggling to find and market to the right people? David Elliott, CEO of Pearl Nano and host of Calling All Detailers, breaks down the critical concept of finding your Ideal Customer by creating a Customer Persona! Your customer persona is a "fake person" based on your top-spending 2-3% of clients. You need to analyze details like their: Gender (e.g., Male) Vehicle type (e.g., Corvette, Mercedes) Interests and habits (e.g., belongs to a Country Club, likes a specific sports team) Age (e.g., 63 years old) Spending habits (e.g., spends $10k per year with you) By creating a specific persona (like "Bob"), you can direct your marketing efforts, such as Facebook Ads, to find more people just like your best customers. This targeted approach helps you stop wasting money and brings more ideal clients into your shop! Need more help with your business strategy? In this episode of "It's the Bottom Line That Matters," host Jennifer Glass is joined by Daniel McCraine and Patricia Reszetylo to tackle the essential question facing many business owners: How do you effectively market to your ideal customer? The discussion zeroes in on the concept of niche marketing—moving away from the temptation to "market to everyone" and, instead, thoughtfully narrowing your focus to identify and truly understand your perfect client, or avatar. Using lively examples from their own experience, including Patricia's background in the equine industry, the trio unpacks practical ways to get inside the minds and worlds of specific groups, from moms over 40 to veterans, and explains why specificity matters so much in successful marketing. The episode is rich with actionable advice, such as segmenting your audience, matching your messaging to your niche's interests, and using the exact language your target group uses (not marketing jargon or internal company lingo). Daniel and Patricia also touch on the fear business owners sometimes feel about “niching down” too far, offering a fresh perspective on how being a “big fish in a small pond” can make a business far more competitive and memorable. Listeners will learn about the importance of personalizing marketing efforts—down to details like images on packaging that resonate with a specific audience—and the pitfalls of generic messages. The conversation wraps up with tips on resonating authentically with your audience, emphasizing that confused or overlooked customers won't buy, and urging business owners to “get as granular as possible” for real results. If you want to boost your marketing impact and discover exactly how to speak your customers' language, you'll come away from this episode with strategies you can use right away.KEYWORDS: ideal client, avatar, niche marketing, market segmentation, sales copy, persuasive language, marketing to moms, marketing to veterans, marketing to baby boomers, marketing to kids, equine marketing, teleseminar, customer agreements, buying decisions, writing for your audience, niching down, consumer lingo, affinity marketing, product targeting, retailer marketing, sales letters, demographic segmentation, direct marketing, customer needs, decision makers, gym marketing, nutritional supplement drinks, sales funnels, veteran marketing, retail product labelingHere are 3 key takeaways from the episode:The Power of Specificity: The tighter you define your niche, the easier it becomes to tailor copy, metaphors, and offers that truly resonate with your audience. Patricia Reszetylo shares how talking directly to a single customer makes your message more persuasive.Know Your Audience's Language: Whether you're targeting veterans, horse owners, or moms over 40, using your audience's language—not yours—boosts credibility and relevance. As Jennifer Glass reminds us, lingo matters!Go Beyond Demographics: Overlay affinities, interests, and experiences for an even smaller “pond”—think not just “golfers,” but “golfers who ride Harleys.” It's about understanding not just who they are, but what they care about. If you're ready to step out of the ‘market to everyone' trap and start truly connecting with your best-fit clients, give the full episode a listen!#MarketingStrategy #BusinessGrowth #FindYourNiche #ItsTheBottomLineThatMatters #PodcastTakeaways

In this episode, Brandi focuses on the art of content creation, guiding you through the nuances of engaging your audience—even if your following is small. She shares her personal success, having generated her first $200,000 year with a modest following of just 583 people. Brandi emphasizes that even if you don't have a massive social media presence, she asserts that you can still achieve remarkable financial success. Throughout the podcast, Brandi elaborates on her approach to content creation, emphasizing the importance of knowing your audience and crafting relatable material. She presents her framework for creating three vital tiers of content that will guide your followers through their journey from initial engagement to decision-making. With her relatable, down-to-earth demeanor and witty humor, she lays out how you can craft content that resonates with your audience at every level, ensuring maximum conversions. The first tier she introduces is Top of Funnel (TOF) content, which is designed to cast a wide net and attract potential clients who can relate to your personal story, experiences, or lifestyle. Brandi encourages you to think less about promoting your services and more about sharing relatable moments that resonate with your audience's everyday lives. By sharing insights from her own chaotic life as a busy mom and business owner, she illustrates how even the most unassuming posts can create powerful connections. Next, Brandi delves into Middle of Funnel (MOF) content, which is where you transition your audience from casual observers to engaged followers who are interested in learning more about what you offer. This involves sharing educational content, problem-solving techniques, and insights that showcase your expertise in your field. Through relatable anecdotes and guidance, she explains how this phase is crucial for solidifying relationships with potential clients, paving the way for deeper engagement. Finally, Brandi introduces the Bottom of Funnel (BOF) content, which focuses on conversions. Here, she guides you on how to create impact-driven calls-to-action that encourage your audience to take the next step—whether it be signing up for your programs, joining your memberships, or reaching out for more personalized coaching. By consistently evaluating the effectiveness of your content, you'll be able to refine your strategy and improve your outcomes. There is a saying in business that the money is in the list. Building your email list is an important piece to any business. EMAIL EVERY DAY Collecting names and email addresses of your clients and potential clients helps you grow your business in a big way. Your email list allows you communicate and build relationships with your potential clients. My podcast is a big piece of growing my email list. I regularly offer resources on this show that helps the list grow. For example, you can get 21 lead magnet ideas to help grow your email list at www.PodcastTalentCoach.com/magnet. I then send an email to my list every day. It's designed to give them value on a regular basis. But it also keeps me top of mind. Even if recipients don't read every email, they at least see my name in their inbox even if it is only to delete the email. By staying top of mind, when they need podcast answers, they think of me. In the book They Ask You Answer by Marcus Sheridan, he shares research about consumer habits. The study shows that consumers have typically finished up to 70% of their research before ever contacting a company. Therefore, if you are waiting until your potential client reaches out before you start building the rapport and relationship, you are waiting too long. They are already close to making the decision. Legendary marketer Dan Kennedy says, "Build the list – sell to the list". I most always include an offer of some sort in my email. OFFERS IN YOUR EMAIL Sometimes my offer is to work with me. Other times I promote partners. There are times when I simply offer more content and other resources. Most every email asks the reader to take action. And it works over time. In my email, I often invite readers to contact me for a podcast strategy session. This is an hour of coaching with me to develop your strategy. You can see those details at www.PodcastTalentCoach.com/apply. During the call, we talk about your goals. We figure out where you are now. Then, we build a bridge to reach your goals. On every call, I ask the person how they discovered me. And I get a variety of answers. Rapport takes time. IT TAKES TIME One day, Mary Elaine signed up for a call. When we got on the Zoom call, I started by asking her how she discovered me. Mary Elaine told me she had been on my list for years. She didn't know how she got on the list and couldn't even remember how long it had been. After reading my email for years, she decided now was the time to take action. I helped Mary Elaine launch her podcast. She was also a coaching and production client for years. Katina was another entrepreneur who reached out for a podcast strategy call. The call started by asking her how she discovered me. She told me she had been listening to this podcast for 18 months. It was finally time to get on a call. There have also been clients who signed up after listening to two episodes. Dr. Paul and I got on a strategy call. He told me after listening to a couple episodes he knew he needed to get on a call with me. You never know how long it will take to get a lead to take action. People make decisions at different paces. Some act quickly. Some are slow and methodical. That's the importance of the list. Communicate often. Provide lots of value. Then, make the offer to work with you to go deeper. Build the list. Sell to the list. BUILD YOUR LIST So, how do you build your email list? There are many ways. Today, we talk with Sheila Davis, a Marketing Strategy, Communication, and Content Development Coach. Sheila helps identify your ideal customer and message so you can build a relationship with them and serve them. She has over 30 years of experience in marketing, including serving as the marketing manager of 48 Days To the Work and Life You Love. Summary In this episode of Startup Junkies, hosts Caleb Talley, Daniel Koonce, and Harrison Kitson sit down with Nathan Rosenberg, founder and CEO of Farmblox. Founded from Nathan's dual expertise in farming and robotics, Farmblox is pioneering automation solutions designed specifically for the agricultural sector. Initially conceptualized as a project to grow crops inside forty-foot shipping containers, Farmblox has since pivoted to enhance and support existing farms. Today, it's involved with over seventy farms across the U.S., focused on specialty crops like maple syrup farms, vineyards, and orchards. Nathan explains that Farmblox operates akin to "Zapier for physical stuff on farms," enabling farmers to automate processes such as irrigation based on soil moisture and weather data. Through its innovative platform, Farmblox connects various sensors and devices, providing real-time data and alerts that can be monitored and managed from a farmer's smartphone. This effectively saves farmers up to seventy-five percent of their time—a precious commodity in the world of agriculture. The conversation also touched on the challenges and skepticism farmers face when adopting new technologies, with Nathan emphasizing the importance of demonstrating tangible benefits and simplifying technological integrations to meet farmers' unique needs without disrupting their traditional practices. Nathan's vision for Farmblox extends to reducing water usage by fifty percent in some of the most water-intensive agricultural areas in the U.S., and eventually expanding into European markets. Brian Thompson chats with Lauren Tilden, host of the Making Good podcast and a marketing coach dedicated to helping creative small business owners who want to get out of their own way and start making an impact. After 8 years in corporate marketing, Lauren left her corporate career and began her winding journey to owning and supporting small businesses. She offers insights into defining one's ideal customer, creating goal-oriented marketing plans, and staying consistent with your message. Episode Highlights Mission-driven businesses are motivated by more than money. Growing up, Lauren felt she had to choose between making a living and doing meaningful work. But once she entered the small business world, she realized she could achieve both purpose and profit by being intentional and putting her values first. “I always sort of felt like I had to choose between making money ... and doing something I cared about," Lauren said. “It wasn't really until I got into the small business space that I realized you can do both at the same time.” Get clear on your marketing goals. Impactful marketing starts with a well-defined goal. Lauren advised small business owners to pinpoint what they need from their marketing efforts, such as increasing brand awareness, generating sales, or expanding a specific client base. Knowing your goal can help you create a campaign that helps you achieve it. “The first place that most people overlook is to get really, really clear on what your goal is,” Lauren said. “Marketing can do so many different things for us. If I didn't know my goal, I could end up spending my time all wrong.” Don't let a niche box you in. Instead of solely focusing on servicing a niche, Lauren encouraged entrepreneurs to understand their ideal customer's motivations, challenges, and values. By getting clear on these psychological details, business owners can create messaging that resonates with target customers on a deeper level. “What unites the people that buy from me and that are part of my community are their psychographics and what they care about,” Lauren said. “I know my ideal customer super well.” Design a marketing plan that meets your time requirements. Small business owners are busy, which is why it's especially important to realistically assess the time you have available to dedicate to marketing. Lauren advised entrepreneurs to create achievable marketing plans they can follow consistently, even if it means starting slow and with just one or two platforms. “When you set yourself up for a plan you can't actually stick to given your bandwidth, that is a recipe … for feeling bad about yourself and your ability to follow through,” Lauren said. “There is no upside to biting off more than you can chew, so create a marketing plan based on the time you have available each week.” Resources + Links Making Good Podcast with Lauren Tilden Lauren Tilden: Website, Instagram, Pinterest, LinkedIn Brian Thompson Financial: Website, Newsletter, Podcast Follow Brian Thompson Online: Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, X, Forbes About Brian and the Mission Driven Business Podcast Brian Thompson, JD/CFP, is a tax attorney and Certified Financial Planner® who specializes in providing comprehensive financial planning to LGBTQ+ entrepreneurs who run mission-driven businesses. BONUS: Mastering Product Management in a Remote World, Insights from Tuple's Head of Product, Eli Goodman NOTE: We want to thank the folks at Tuple.app for being so generous with their stories, and supporting the podcast. Visit tuple.app/scrum and share them if you find the app useful! Remember, sharing is caring!   In this episode, Eli Goodman, Head of Product at Tuple, shares insights from his extensive experience in software development and product management. Having transitioned from engineering management to product leadership, Eli reveals the key strategies Tuple uses to develop its remote pair programming service, which is trusted by companies like Figma and Shopify. Tune in to discover how Tuple handles remote team dynamics, customer-driven development, and balances tech debt with client needs, all while maintaining a customer-centric focus. Introduction to Tuple and Why It's Unique Tuple, a remote pair programming service designed by engineers, solves a pain point that its founders, all pairing enthusiasts, experienced firsthand. They were unsatisfied with generic screen-sharing tools that disrupted the flow of coding collaboration. Tuple's product philosophy is about staying "one inch wide, one mile deep" to ensure the tool stays focused on enhancing the pairing experience without getting in the way. "The details matter. Generic screen-sharing tools just don't cut it for productive pairing." Managing a Remote Team at Tuple Managing a distributed team across the U.S. and Europe comes with its challenges. Eli highlights the importance of alignment and ensuring everyone is on the same page, despite working remotely. He emphasizes the role of Product Owners as "connective tissue" and the power of connecting team members with key initiatives. Through personal conversations, Eli uncovers what motivates his team, allowing him to support them without micromanaging. "What makes you proud? What brings you shame? Understanding these emotions helps uncover what drives our team." Ensuring Effective Communication in a Remote Environment Effective communication is the backbone of remote work, and Eli shares some of the practices that have helped Tuple's team stay aligned and collaborative. From using spontaneous pairing sessions to fostering a culture of checking in, Tuple has created a remote work environment where conversations are naturally sparked, and collaboration is effortless. "We have more space in our schedules for spontaneous pairing, which keeps collaboration flowing." Lessons Learned from Pairing Remotely One of the key insights Eli shares is how Tuple has evolved its remote pairing process. In the past, pairing might have felt like a formal meeting, but now it happens more spontaneously. Tuple's app facilitates this by offering the metaphor of a phone call—engineers can call each other at any time, making collaboration easy, especially when someone is deep into a task and needs quick support. "At Tuple, engineers only have three meetings a week, leaving the rest of the time open for pairing and creative work." Pairing Beyond Programming Tasks While pairing is typically associated with programming, Eli explains how Tuple uses pairing for other activities, like design or planning sessions. This practice has extended beyond coding, fostering a culture where team members collaborate on various tasks that benefit from shared perspectives and live problem-solving. "We've expanded pairing beyond coding, using it for activities like design reviews and project planning." Balancing Customer Feedback with Product Vision Responding to customer feedback is vital, but it can also lead to losing focus. Eli explains how Tuple balances this by capturing as much feedback as possible, using tools like Product Board to keep track of customer requests. However, instead of building every requested feature, Eli focuses on synthesizing broader patterns and emotional triggers that align with Tuple's long-term vision. "Focus on discovery as a product person. Understand the emotional context behind customer feedback—that's what drives great products." Tuple's Ideal Customer and Core Value Tuple's ideal customers are teams that value deep collaboration through pair programming. The platform's most important offering is the ability to make remote pairing seamless and intuitive, something traditional tools fail to deliver. "Tuple is built for teams that believe in the power of collaboration and want a tool that enhances their pairing experience, not disrupts it." Roadmapping: How to Prioritize the Right Work in Product Development Looking ahead, Eli shares Tuple's plans to continue investing in quality and lowering the barriers to remote pairing. One exciting potential direction includes creating a "social layer" within the app to help users feel more connected with their teammates. Another idea is incorporating non-human pairing agents that could assist with specific tasks. "We want to see if we can make it feel like you're right there with your teammates, lowering the barriers to start pairing." Recommended Resources Eli recommends The Mom Test by Rob Fitzpatrick, a must-read for anyone working in product management. The book teaches how to talk to customers in a way that gets honest, useful feedback rather than polite responses that don't help improve the product. "I thought caring about people was enough to talk to customers, but The Mom Test taught me what not to do during customer interviews." About Eli Goodman Eli Goodman has been working on software teams for 17 years. He's been a full-stack developer and engineering manager at both large and small companies, including Etsy and Headspace. A few years ago, Eli transitioned to product management and is now the Head of Product at Tuple, a remote pair programming service used by companies such as Figma, Shopify, and many others in the software industry. Differentiation in business involves embracing your unique strengths, experiences, and passions to create a distinct value proposition that sets you apart from competitors. It's not about being different for the sake of it but authentically showcasing what you uniquely bring to the table. Understanding your market and analyzing your competition is essential for effective differentiation. By comparing your strengths, experiences, and positioning to those of your competitors, you can identify what makes your business stand out—whether it's a specific expertise, a unique customer experience, or a particular result you consistently deliver. Rather than fearing competition, use it as an opportunity to refine and communicate your unique value. Effectively communicating your differentiation is crucial. Through branding, marketing strategies, or sharing your story, consistently highlight what makes you and your business special. This approach not only attracts your ideal audience but also helps build a strong personal brand. Remember, differentiation is an ongoing process of self-discovery and expression that ultimately helps you zero in on the legacy you want to leave. Quotes “One of the things we spend a good amount of time on in the strategic process is really helping people understand how they're different. Different in their marketplace, different than their competitors, and different in a way that helps them stand out, not just from competition, but just stand out in general.” “Trying to be different and just being different are two very, completely different things. And I think the more we are our authentic and genuine selves, actually, the more different we are.” “You are the biggest differentiator in your business.” “You do have to look at your competitors, look at their experiences, look at their strengths, look at their positioning, to understand how you have to differentiate yourself.” “I don't believe in fearing competition. I feel like there's plenty of business out there for everybody.” “Our internal 13 year old self might hear that and get really freaked out by that, right? Because all we want to do in our teen years is fit right in.” “We talk about soul a lot in this show, but really thinking about, you know, what is your purpose, and what are you here to do in this life that you're living?” “In order to know where you're going, aka goals direction, you have to know who you are, and you have to reverse engineer the goal setting into impact.” “Once you do get clear on what makes you different, you have to communicate that.”

By focusing on the specific characteristics, pain points, and behaviors of your ideal customer, you can create impactful messaging that drives engagement and business growth. While a target audience is broad, an ideal customer persona hones in on a single, detailed profile representing your perfect customer. Narrowing down your focus to this ideal persona allows you to create more effective messaging that speaks directly to their needs and challenges. A helpful way to brainstorm your ideal customer is by reflecting on your best customers and identifying common themes among them. Conversely, consider your worst customers and why they weren't a good fit. One common mistake is not going deep enough into defining your ideal customer. When you go too broad, your messaging becomes generic, weakening its impact. Speaking to a broad audience dilutes your message, while focusing on one person makes it more powerful and resonant. Regularly updating these personas, especially in response to significant market changes, is crucial for keeping your marketing relevant and effective. The power of making the customer the hero of your story lies in understanding and anticipating their needs, which ultimately helps build stronger connections and drives your business's success. Quotes “An ideal customer persona is really thinking about your broad target audience and bringing it down to define one person.” “We're taking that broad definition and defining it as one person.”  “How old is that person? What's their socioeconomic status? What's their average level of education? How many kids might they have? Where do they tend to live in the United States? What are their hobbies? What do they like to read? What do they like to listen to? Right? Those are just some questions to help you go much deeper into your broad target audience and define a customer persona.” “I created ours, just to tackle the first part of that question, by actually thinking of who our best customers have been for the different things that we offer.” “Once you have customers that you're working with, actually taking time to reflect on, you know, what made them a great customer, or even what made someone else not your ideal customer, you know, just write down all the different things that you notice” “The biggest secret that I unearthed some years back is: we are often our ideal customer. Believe it or not, we're just a couple steps ahead of them.” “So many times, people create businesses to serve the needs of themselves or a person just like them, that until you sit down and actually write out your ideal customer persona, you don't realize how similar you are to them.” “Look inwards and think about where you were maybe a few years ago, before launching the business that you're launching, and thinking about who, who you were, what you were doing, and also think about what are the results you want to get for that person, because thinking about the results will help you better define their pain points, their challenges and why they're coming to you.” “The biggest challenge is just not going deep enough, people tend to go broad. And what happens when you go broad is your messaging sounds very general.” “If you're thinking about talking to a group of people versus talking to one person, specifically, your messaging isn't going to be as strong.” Links mentioned in this episode: Ideal Customer Persona PDF: https://buildmybrandid.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/biD_Ideal-Customer-Insight-Sheet_FINAL.pdf Building a StoryBrand: Clarify Your Message So Customers Will Listen by Donald Miller: https://a.co/d/feHZ3Eh

“20% of your customer base generates 80% of your revenue.” - Sarah Williams Identifying your ideal customer is not something you do once. It's something you need to tweak and get clearer about in your business on a daily basis. In this episode, I'm talking about how to figure out who the 20% of your customers are who are responsible for 80% of your revenue and why you should focus all of your efforts on them. Oh… and one other thing. Stop trying to please everyone!   When you try to please everyone, you dilute your focus. Instead of spending your time and energy on what you know works for your most loyal customers - the ones who buy from you every day - you spend time, energy, and money trying to satisfy one-off requests from customers who are not your ideal person.  If you're just getting started and even if you've been in business for a while, you might have an idea of who your ideal customer is, but you're probably not sure. Start by asking yourself questions about your ideal customer and get as specific as possible with your answers.  Who is your ideal customer? Start with the basics.  Where does your ideal customer live?  What are your ideal customer's interests?  What are your ideal customer's challenges or pain points?  Nail down the basics and then get more specific. Is your ideal customer “a mom” or “a mom of preschoolers who works outside the home and wants to provide quick, easy, and healthy meals to her family?” It is much easier for me to speak to “a mom” when I know who she is and what her pain points are!  Once you get a good picture of who your ideal customer is, it's time to talk about how to get them into your world and build the know-like-trust factor that makes them want to buy from you. Get to know your ideal customer and let them get to know you by: Hanging out in common Facebook groups offering advice and engaging in conversations.  Speak their language in your posts, videos, and emails.  Target their interests in your social media advertising.  Serve before you sell. This is SO important. Provide value without asking for money.  This month inside Launch Your Box, we're talking all about SEO and how it can help your subscription box business grow.
