any of my clients, they arrive in coaching with some degree of expectation that there is a problem with them, that they aren't good enough or they in some way lack the skills, talents and ability to succeed in their leadership role. In fact, I have found the opposite to be true! Most clients are well-equipped for what they do as a leader with managerial responsibilities, what I continue to observe is the untapped opportunity for connecting with who they are as a leader. And, with a well-developed sense of who they are as a leader, I wonder what impact that will have on their ability to influence others and the organization. As I think about the insights Michelle provided; there are 3 main points that stood out for me; - how to shift our natural human tendency of being in judgment to being in a place discernment, curiosity, and pursuit of shared accountability - what is needed for bringing opposing people and parties together and the concept of ‘otherizing’ - The clarification in the distinction between meditation and mindfulness Coach Mo Knows (I a tip, a coaching question, and a bit of inspiration) TIP Check out Michelle’s company, Lucenscia, - Leading Awake Leadership Development Series (https://www.lucenscia.com/our-services) and - A Bridge To Better: A Family's Open Letter & Invitation to Humanity with Free Resource Guide (www.ABridge2Better.com) Reminder – and what our frequent listeners already know, the full transcript of this episode can be found in the shownotes at TuesdaysWithCoachMo.com/podcast. In this episode of Tuesdays with Coach Mo, I’ve interviewed Professional Speaker, Author and Leadership Coach, Alex Tremble who has over 10 years of experience coaching and advising some of our nation’s most senior level government leaders. He established GPS Leadership Solutions LLC and published two bestselling books. He’s an expert in influence, Strategic Networking, Leadership Perception and Career Advancement. In our discussion, we talked about managing up from two perspectives. - The first perspective is more broad in scope and is how to strategically network with individuals who have bigger job titles or have a position that ranks higher than yours. - The second perspective is narrower in space and is about managing up in the relationship between you and your boss. We also covered how he was tapped for a high profile role early in his career. He talked about the merits of strategic networking, the first perspective in our discussion on Managing Up. What I found interesting is how he applies some of the same skills related to strategic networking to his efforts to manage up in the relationship with his direct boss. Alex attributes his success to managing up is directly related to his outlook – his approach. He notes that it’s his job to make the boss look really good in whatever it is they are attempting to achieve for the organization. The return on this effort is that he will be valued in the mind of his boss. As Mark McCormak said in, What They Don’t Teach You at Harvard Business School, “ Is climbing a corporate ladder a game? Absolutely. An MBA, or law degree or any other degree can get you in the door. Once inside, you have to find a way to let people know your real worth.“ Coach Mo Knows (a tip, a coaching question, and a bit of inspiration) Tip: My tip this week is to check out Alex Trembles online courses: -Get his FREE Ebook – https://learn.alextremble.com/courses/GPSBook and use the discount code: MyFreeBook - Strategic Networking – FREE First Module – https://learn.alextremble.com/courses/Networking Coaching Question: Is your boss a listener or a reader? Management Consultant and Business Thought Leader, Peter Drucker said: -The boss who is a listener likes to receive information in person with a follow up written communication. -The boss who is a reader likes to receive their information in writing and then follow up with a conversation. Knowing the preferred style of your boss is one way to engage with them in a manner that supports your ability for effectively managing up. Inspiration: “You don’t have to like or admire your boss, nor do you have to hate them. You do have to manage them, however, so that they become your resource for achievement, accomplishment and personal success.” Inspired by a similar quote by Peter Drucker Resources mentioned: Adam Kahane, Power and Love: A Theory and Practice of Social Change - https://www.amazon.com/Power-Love-Theory-Practice-Social/dp/1605093041 Mark McCormack, What They Don’t Teach You at Harvard Business School - https://www.amazon.com/What-Teach-Harvard-Business-School/dp/0553345834 Adam Grant, Give and Take: Why Helping Others Drives Our Success - https://www.amazon.com/Give-Take-Helping-Others-Success/dp/0143124986

Hi, my name is Monique Betty, affectionately known as ‘coach Mo” and welcome to ‘Tuesdays with Coach Mo.’ Today on our show, I am talking about using your strengths in your pursuit of fulfilling your executive ambitions. You have worked hard to land that 6-figure job and I challenge you to consider, how well do you know AND apply your strengths at work? 01:13 When talking about strengths I’m talking about the unique natural talents within you that shape your patterns of thoughts, feelings and behavior that when perfected result in a consistent level of near perfect performance. You see you may be quick to identify your strengths; for example, leading a team to achieve their goals, or strategic planning, or a skillful negotiator - - and that’s great, and they are highly visible to others and they look fantastic on a resume. Yet, the strengths I’m talking about today, are those natural talents within your unique DNA, that are deep inside of you, that contribute to your success for how you lead teams, or how you go about strategic planning or, how you skillfully negotiate. 02:17 In my chapter, Coach with a Strengths Based Approach, in the recently released Coaching Perspectives-9 by the Center for Coaching Certification I write about how leaders with different dominant talent profiles successfully lead their respective teams while using the strengths that are unique to them. Now, regular listeners of the Tuesdays with Coach Mo podcast have heard me share my version of a Career Insurance Plan. And, if this is your first time here…..welcome! and jot this down. If you want long-term professional satisfaction, then you need a level of preparedness to help you successfully weather life’s unexpected changes, by creating a Career Insurance Plan built on 3 dimensions (like a 3-legged stool) a strong network, high degree of self-awareness and a stellar financial plan. Your Career Insurance Plan will provide you a degree of calm and confidence when things don’t go as planned. And, today’s topic on strengths is, in my opinion, at the core of self-awareness. 04:38 When a high-achieving professional is aware of their natural talent and strengths and knows how to apply them in an effective way, then they are more likely to lead from a place of confidence that ignites their performance and productivity at work. Throughout my decade of work as a coach, I’ve enjoyed connecting with high-achievers and leaders who all have something in common. And that something is that they know how good they are yet the challenge they all have in common is the pursuit of becoming as good as they want to be. 05:30 Almost everyone, including me and probably you, sure know how to ‘muck’ things up for ourselves! Here are some of the questions I often hear: How did I get in this situation? How do I get out of this situation? How will I move forward? Why do I feel so stuck? Where do I begin? How do I start to make changes? Then, in short order comes the point where the muck get’s unleashed. The stories we tell ourselves about what didn’t happen, who didn’t do something, why they can’t do something? And on and on with negative self-talk that kicks muck into overdrive. So, where do you begin? How do you get started on becoming as good as you want to be? Well, one option is to stay the course. If you have a plan that is working for you then great. If not, then I hope that you are prepared to receive whatever comes your way by some force outside of you. You see, all too often we are benchmarking ourselves against others. Maybe it’s a childhood friend, or a family member or a friend from college or even a co-worker. We’re taking a snapshot, a fraction, of someone else’s life and thinking ‘that should be what’s happening for me’ or, in some way feeling lessor about ourselves because whatever they have going on is not happening for you. And then we proceed to tell ourselves stories in a way that limits us. So, the opportunity for each of us – when muck arrives in our head, is to shift perspective to what we know to be true about our own greatness – our unique way of thinking, feeling and behaving in the world – in other words shift perspective to your strengths. And, whatever is happening in the world outside of you, is going to happen. There is limited control you have over these things. However, what you do have control over is what is going on inside of you. You see, just like your heart beats, and the oxygen passes through your lungs - - you don’t notice it. You just know that it is there. The same is true for the natural talents and behaviors that uniquely define you. They are there. Ever present and guiding each decision, no matter how large or small in every minute of your life. And, most people don’t notice these talents for what they are -- possibly you’re strengths. You see, the reason I say ‘possibly’ is because that although the natural talents are within you, there is the possibility that they are not being applied in a manner that supports you as a strength. And, that is okay. Because what that means is that once you gain clarity on what those talents are, you can then consciously develop them over time to serve as - - a strength. Now, this knowledge base around natural talents and strengths is presented through the extensive work of researchers at Gallup and is available to you in an online assessment called CliftonStrengths With these client stories, I hope you are inspired to gain clarity and dig deeper with the discovery of your natural talents of thoughts, feeling and behaviors. You have one mouth and two ears, use them proportionately. I love this saying by Judge Judy. It is a quick reminder to ourselves that, yes, we are equipped to ‘listen’. What I have discovered as an executive coach to high-achievers, is that by effectively listening to others especially during contentious conversations, you can connect with the other person in a meaningful way, stick to the facts and avoid getting dragged into the triggering emotions of a difficult conversation. “Easy in concept yet difficult in execution” but one thing you’ll come to discover over time, is that it takes practice! Whether it is the presidential election, a contentious conversation with your boss, colleague, parent, friend, significant other, your ability to gain self-mastery of navigating difficult conversations is an essential skill in your pursuit of your executive ambitions. When you hear someone mention the work of an executive coach, what thoughts come to mind for you? Something I have found to be true in my 10 + years of coaching high-achieving professionals is that in most cases, the focus of our time together often expands into matters related to their personal life. Matters related to health, finances, spirituality and relationships. Relationships with a significant other, family members or friends. In general, it works like this, the client wants to advance their career and fulfill their executive ambitions. They hire me to help them, for example, they may want to be more effective at leading their team and increase team engagement. And, over time, they may decide to pivot the focus of their coaching as they are struggling with thoughts and emotions tied to a personal relationship gone wrong making it really hard for them to focus on their workplace goals. In today’s episode of Tuesday’s with Coach Mo, I’m speaking with a dynamic young professional, Lexx Mills, who, in addition to being in process of pursuing a dual Master’s degree in Business and Urban and Regional Planning, has recently started building an online community focused on all things related to healthy relationships, healthy breakups and everything in between. The year is 2277 and women have finally achieved pay equality. Startling fact? Absolutely. In fact, I would say that it is a stunning fact recognizing that in the last year, we have actually increased what was reported in the Global Gender Gap report of 2019. The year 2277 is actually 55 more years than estimated in the previous report. I believe that high achieving professionals can achieve their executive ambitions when they create a plan for generating their inner-well of positivity. When you are working to advance your career within large organizations, challenging situations are commonplace. A toxic colleague who seems to undermine your good work every chance they get. A boss who plays favorites and seems to only issue praise to others on your team. Or you may feel a general lack of respect for all that you do within your organization. When situations like these arise, you want to know how to be the best version of you and generate the inner-well of positivity within you. In today’s podcast, I am speaking with Laura Masters, Life Coach with AbunDance Enterprises who shares with me her professional wisdom on the science of positivity. The field of positive psychology is 20 years old, and new evidence-based research continues to emerge. Research results are revealing profound work in the areas of happiness, well-being and strengths that are essential tools for your leadership toolbox. Enjoy the podcast! 00:03 Monique: What is your definition of positivity? 00:12 Laura: It’s a practice and a way of being, it leans on the edge of optimism and your attitude and reflects how a person that looks for a solution. It’s like a muscle you cultivate and a viewpoint in a way of being in the world. 00:44 Monique: Dr. Barbara Fredrickson, a leading scholar in the field of positive psychology, as advanced the theory of Broaden and Build. Please share insights of this theory. 01:12 Laura: The Broaden and Build theory talks about the power of positive emotions and positive emotions are what make up positivity. They are the feelings that make you feel really good, joy, happiness, tranquility, enthusiasm, appreciation, and gratitude. When those feelings happen, it sets you up to see the world differently. You’re more able to tend to others, you’re open to ideas, you want to explore, you connect better, and you have more safety. It opens up your mind and so it broadens your ability to take in life on a daily basis, the experience of being healthier, happier, some more personal fulfillment, and you have more success in your life. 03:29 Coach Mo: Is positivity something people are born with? Or do we have the capacity to create that within ourselves? 03: 52 Laura: So what happens is we do have this ability to build that which is built into our Neuroplasticity - the ability that we can create systems in our mind. We’re born with what’s called the “Negativity Bias” which means our systems in our bodies from, you know, our days on the savannah, are set up and wired for survival. Barbara Fredrickson also talks about 3:1 positivity ratio. And to overcome one negative experience in your day, she says we must have at least 3 to 4 positive, heartfelt emotions. 05:56 Coach Mo: What example do you have, Laura to speak to that really illuminates how powerful the positivity ratio is? 06:34 Laura: So what happen was, I had a day when a lot of things happened and one of them that happened on that day was my mom passed away. I had a catastrophe in my house. It was like, everything was broken down. I mean, I was in a terrible place to stress so one of the things that I did was deep breathing. I just can’t see it ever ending so I got on my heart map machine and it took me thirteen or fourteen minutes but I got myself back to where I was showing coherence on the Biofeedback machine and I could feel the shift in my body. And then after that, I thought, “Okay, so that’s one" then I went out to my garden and I looked at my flowers and I did a little bit of gardening - so that was just enjoying the moment. I came back into my office and I wrote a few thank you notes for just some friends whom I’ve done some nice things lately; going over those positive things. Then I went for a run and I built myself up physically. At the end of the day, I was back in a good place and able to handle things. 08:23 Coach Mo: What is the distinction between the use of that terminology, or the ideas of happiness compared to positivity. 08:46 Laura: Happiness is a feeling and Positivity is more like a mindset. 09:52 Coach Mo: What are some options for someone to do right now within the hour to generate positivity in their life? What resources are available? 10:23 Laura: • Deep breathing • Doing one kind thing • Email • Listen to a song • Order a book And things that is meaningful and brings joy to your life and really being aware of what those are and cultivating them. Sometimes, we have to schedule that in, like you know, “From 12:00 to 12:30, I am going to do nothing but things that I absolutely love.” 11:18 Coach Mo: What is just your final thought that relates to the individuals building their muscle of positivity? 12:11 Laura: And to care about yourself and have enough compassion for yourself to do that in tiny little habit that shifts the trajectory of your ability to handle challenges. And then to share it with others and to just, you know, know that this is in your capability and that you can, by doing all of that just create a better and better life for yourself and everyone around you. Dr. Barbara Fredrickson’s book Positivity revealed that past researchers discovered that most fast-paced changes in emotions don't last. This is what is referred to as the hedonic treadmill effect. So how do you create positive emotions in your life that are sustained? Research suggests that it is a slow and steady process. As Laura Masters mentioned in our conversation, there are things that you can begin doing right now. Whatever you choose, be deliberate in building your capacity or inner resource for positivity. ______________________ Coach Mo Knows (a tip, a coaching question, and a bit of inspiration) Tip: 1) Connect with Laura Masters :) https://www.facebook.com/AbunDanceEnterprise Coaching Question: On a scale of 1 to 10, rate the kind of day you had yesterday (10 = great, 1 = not so great) And then answer these three short questions as you consider your rating: • What were you doing? • What were you feeling? • Were you interacting with others, or were you alone? The general premise of this sample exercise is to get you thinking about the micro-pieces of your day. Continue to self-rate each day for a period of time (one or two weeks) Then start to determine for yourself, what is the opportunity for you in generating the positivity you want as you build your ability to generate positivity, Inspiration New York Yankees great Derek Jeter " I go into every game thinking I'm going to be the hero. Displaying confidence seems to be an unwritten rule for getting ahead within large organizations. Those we see as displaying an outgoing personality have their head held high, and they know how to say all the right things at the right time. But, is this true? I believe that high-achieving professionals can achieve their executive ambitions by appropriately building and applying their confidence. Consider two perspectives: first from Tomas Chamorro-Premuzic, Professor of business psychology at the University College London, and author of the book Confidence, and second from my experience coaching high achieving professionals. Professor Tomas describes two extremes of self evaluation. On one end is overconfidence. On the other end is humility, and possibly even insecurity. What I found particularly interesting in the book is the reasons why we find confident people to be so compelling. First, they display desirable features of being charismatic, extroverted, and socially skilled; and second is the tendency of others to equate confidence with competence. To a certain degree is being over-confident a dangerous place to find yourself? Being over-confident can lead to toxic effects. Or on the other end of the confidence spectrum and that is associated with humility. By being humble, an individual is more inclined to be aware of discrepancy between the person they want to be and where they are. In my many years of coaching high achievers, I’ve observed three general scenarios that tend to undermine the confidence of my clients. • How decision points are framed • Negative self-talk • Narcissism and entitlement characterize professionals within the Millennials and the Generation Y populations, as revealed by research when compared to other generations. What are the possibilities for creating a balanced level of confidence that supports you in advancing your career and achieving your executive ambitions? • Build Your Competence • Build on Your Own Strengths • Create a Plan (Annual, Monthly, Weekly, and Daily) By taking these steps you will be building your confidence and your motivation! Motivation and self-confidence are connected. When you have more of one, you will discover that you will gain more of the other. ______________________________________________ Coach Mo Knows (Tip, Coaching Question and bit of Inspiration) Tips: 1. Diversity: Corporation and You The corporate perspective on race is changing. Have you, or someone you know, experienced the reality that the corporation where you worked somehow operated under a vail of inequity and unfairness? Those who were steadily advancing within the corporation looked different from you. If so, you are like the hundreds of clients I serve; high achieving women, people of color and LGBTQ people. For more than 10 years now, I have provided executive coaching services to high-achievers who have worked hard to get the education and skills in pursuit of fulfilling their executive ambitions. My guest on today's podcast is Dr. Tim Ewing, who is currently the Vice President of Employee Diversity, Inclusion and Experience at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts. What you're about to enjoy is an interview I conducted with Dr. Ewing a few years ago when he was President and Founder of BreakThrough Dynamics, a global diversity and organizational development consulting firm, where he helped large corporations and strategically plan and advance their programs for diversity and inclusion. Following are some of the highlights of our conversation: What shifts have you seen regarding diversity initiatives? • How we think about diversity and inclusion. • Is not only are people going through awareness building but also introspection around what are some of the biases that I hold that actually limit me from seeing others' full potential How do you get underneath that with the biases? • Real learning comes in relationship. • Clarity on the underpinning of both individual and organizational change. • Individuals will come to realize that they have more commonality with people than first thought • Values resulting from our personal experience shape how we view individuals or members of diverse groups. What quantifiable evidence can you point to in making the case that managing diversity is mission-critical for an organization? • Buying power of the various populations, how is it manifesting within those different markets, who is representing the organization in those markets, how are we building relationships within those communities • Untapped talent that exist within the organization that's not being actualized, it's not being effectively managed, as well as there are opportunities that are being lost What are some of the greatest barriers to an organization's ability to leverage diversity? • Blind spots that an organization culture has in terms of being able to see the value of diversity within their organization. • People don't quit their job, they quit their bosses. What are the key steps in creating a culture to really discuss and embrace these differences that are posed by the diversity advancement? • Look at the relationships. • To have mentors or sponsors or even a manager who can relate to me, I must be willing to show up more fully. • People of color, who have a natural distrust of system, have to allow ourselves to test the boundary of the organization. How much and how far can I show up and being able to test the waters around that? • White colleagues must be able to expand their bandwidth to meet professionals of color on their turf. What are some of the unwritten rules for advancement and success for minority leaders? • Mentors and sponsors certainly help to navigate through organizational dynamics • Be open to sharing our personal journeys and personal stories and really embrace the strengths that materialize through our story. • The more we risk showing up and organizations are ready to hear what we have to say, there are greater opportunities for collaboration, creativity, and innovation. • Recognize that some of the bumps in the road across differences can be learning opportunities for growth and development Coach Mo Knows (a tip, coaching question and bit of inspiration) Tip: Learn about your own unconscious bias’ with this free online assessment: https://implicit.harvard.edu/implicit/takeatest.html Coaching Question: How has your career advancement been affected by microaggressions you have experienced in the workplace?
