Coopster Gold takes us back to our Amazing Animal Facts theme from last season, but with a twist! This time we only picked those creatures who have sadly joined the ranks of the EXTINCT. We decided to leave the dinosaurs out of it, focusing on such fantastic beasts as Mighty Moas, Tasmanian Tigers, Woolly Rhinos and, of course, the poster animal for extinction, the Dodo. ----------------------------------------Retro Ridoctopus is:• Parasite Steve (read)• 8-Bit Alchemy (listen) • Coopster Gold (join) • Nintenjoe (subscribe)----------------------------------------All original heavy metal music by Enchanted Exile

The last known Tasmanian tiger to be held in captivity was found dead at Hobart's Beaumaris zoo on 8th September, 1936. The critically endangered marsupial was accidentally locked out of its shelter overnight and succumbed to the frigid temperatures. With the animal's death, a species that had once roamed across Australia for thousands of years went out with a whisper. In this episode, Arion, Rebecca and Olly discuss why 19th- and 20th-century Australians hunted Tasmanian tigers with such enthusiasm; explain why Thylacines had been in decline for about 3,500 years anyway; and look into how close scientists now are to bringing the “dog-headed pouched one” back from extinction… Further Reading: ‘The history of the Thylacine' (The Zoological Society London, 2016): https://www.zsl.org/news-and-events/feature/history-of-the-thylacine ‘Tasmanian tiger: Remains of last thylacine found in cupboard after 85 years' (BBC, 2022): https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-australia-63855426 ‘Last of their kind: Caring for the Tasmanian Tiger collection' (Museums Victoria; 2023): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ykb66UCOMOY&t=9s ‘Tasmanian Tiger in Colour' (NFSA Films, 2022) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6gt0X-27GXM #1930s #Nature #Australia #Sad We'll be back on Monday - unless you join

One of R.J. Post's earliest memories is that of copying newspaper comic strips with his watercolor set and delivering the pictures to doorsteps in his Elyria, Ohio, neighborhood. All of that was before he could even read and write! He graduated to delivering actual newspapers — and reading much of them along the way — before he finished elementary school. In high school, he wrote short stories and newspaper articles. He went on to earn an Associate of Arts from Dodge City Community College and a Bachelor of Arts in English from St. Mary of the Plains College in Dodge City, KS. R.J. worked as a reporter, editor, and manager at newspapers in Kansas and Nebraska for 31 years and is proud to say that the printer's ink still runs through his veins. He now works as a copywriter and digital content creator for a marketing agency. He has had short stories published on the Saturday Evening Post's website and in the Nebraska Writers Guild's “Flashes From the Plains: A Flash Fiction Collection.” “Lion Taming, Dating, and Other Dangerous Endeavors,” a collection of short stories, is his first book. He enjoys used-book shops, vinyl records, marching bands, and dysfunctional love songs. R.J. lives in Grand Island, NE, with his wife, Susan. They have three grown daughters. His books comprise “Tasmanian Tigers, True Love and Other Elusive Things — 5•10•20 Minutes to Read” and “Lion Taming, Dating, and Other Dangerous Endeavors.” R.J. lives in Grand Island, NE, with his wife, Susan. Feeling festive? Please gift us 1 min of your time and fill this survey (https://s.surveyplanet.com/d79mitsl) Thanks in advance :) The year 2022 had a lot of interesting science discoveries, that had many young and curious minds really hooked. No, we are not claiming idly that kids were hooked to these news updates. You'll find this episode where an 8-yr old Dhruv, a 9-yr old Keshav and a 10-yr old Vihaan, delve into the depths of the wildlife discoveries - proof that curious kids and wildlife trivia can hardly be separated. In this episode, you'll get to catch up on the fun stuff about wildlife science - how scientists plan to bring back extinct species, how environmentalists are trying to re-introduce new animals into old habitats and how marine biologists have found creatures in the most unlikely of places (read: sharks near hot lava of underwater volcanoes). 2022 was a lot of fun for wildlife enthusiasts. This episode is even more fun, for the undiluted entertainment that flows from a conversation between 3 vibrant and young minds. We also talk about the WNCL grand final, which the Tasmanian Tigers won. This week we talk to Sarah Coyte, who plays for Tasmania. We talked to Sarah before the grand final, so she speaks about where the Tigers are at at that point in time. Sarah also opens up about being diagnosed with Anorexia Nervosa, and how that has impacted her cricket and her mental and physical health. She also speaks about what she has done to improve this. Sarah talks about her time with the Strikers and the Australian team, and what it means to represent Australia, wearing the baggy green. Next week we are joined by Adelaide Striker and South Australian Redbacks player, Wes Agar. Don't miss it! Join Hackaday Editor-in-Chief Elliot Williams and Managing Editor Tom Nardi as they tackle all the hacks that were fit to print this last week. Things start off with some troubling news from Shenzhen (spoilers: those parts you ordered are going to be late), and lead into a What's That Sound challenge that's sure to split the community right down the center. From there we'll talk about human powered machines, bringing OpenSCAD to as many devices as humanly possible, and the finer points of installing your own hardware into a Pelican case. There's a quick detour to muse on laser-powered interstellar probes, a Pi-calculating Arduino, and a surprisingly relevant advertisement from Sony Pictures. Finally, stay tuned to hear the latest developments in de-extinction technology, and a seriously deep dive into the lowly nail.

Officially declared extinct in 1982 by the IUNC and the last known sighting in 1936, Thylacine's (Thylacinus cynocephalus) have been a subject for debate amongst Australian researchers for the last 50+ years. Neil Waters, owner and operator of the Thylacine Awareness Group of Australia (TAGOA) believes that he not only has seen a Thylacine, often referred to as Tasmanian Tigers, on more than one occasion, but he claims he currently has demonstrable evidence that the Tasmanian Tiger still roams Tasmania and parts of Australia to this day. This episode, I sit with Mr. Neil Waters, and we discuss why he believes academia and "scientists" are purposely attempting to cover up the existence of Thylacine's for profit. Neil's goal is to defeat the stigma of there not being any possible way that Tasmanian Tigers still exist with the help of TAGOA, and other eye-witnesses. Neil is no stranger to controversy, and he takes on the critics in this special episode of Unquestionable. Could Thylacine's still be prospering in Australia, Tasmania, or New Guinea? Let's find out! After retiring from international cricket, Rachel Priest is now based in Hobart, where she captains the Tasmanian Tigers.
On 7 September 1936 the last known thylacine, 'Benjamin', died from exposure in a zoo in Hobart, Tasmania. The last of his kind in captivity, & likely one of the last of his kind full stop. But being officially declared in 1986 has not stopped reported sightings and encounters of Tasmanian Tigers both in Tasmania and on the Australian mainland, from suburban Victoria to Qld's remote Cape York. Come with us as we discuss the very real possibility of living Thylacines with expert Neil Waters from Thylacine Awareness Group of Australia (TAGOA). Could 2021 be the year proof is finally recovered?

Today, Laura, Dean and Krysta discuss the concept of Alien Big Cats or Phantom Cats. These are not cats from other worlds or ghostly cats but rather these are large, predatory cats that are believed to be discovered well outside their natural range. Suspected phantom cats include the Black panther-like beasts that have plagued England for almost as long as it's been an island country; the Australian Tootanoola Tiger, a large cat-like predator that even when it was shot and killed it was dubbed an Abyssinian Wolf, which is a species that doesn't exist. We discuss the 'blue' or Maltese tigers of China, gray smoky beasts that appear as suddenly as a shadow and disappear just as quickly. Tasmanian Tigers, jaguars spotted on trap cams in Oklahoma and so many more. So join us in this world-spanning episode as we hunt Alien Big Cats. And remember, next week is our 50th show and we will be using listener submitted stories so share away!

Sightings of the supposedly extinct Tasmanian tiger had been reported several times in the last three years, according to an Australian government agency. The Tasmanian tiger, also known as thylacine / ˈθaɪ ləˌsaɪn /, was declared extinct after the last one died in Hobart Zoo in 1936. According to the Department of Primary Industries, Parks, Water and Environment (DPIPWE), the thylacine population dwindled because of excessive hunting. Other causes of the animal's rapid disappearance were habitat destruction, foreign diseases, and competitive species—like wild dogs—brought by British colonizers in the 19th century. Though the animal had been declared extinct for over 80 years, the DPIPWE recently publicized a report containing numerous accounts of thylacine sightings. The most recent one occurred in July, when a man claimed to have seen the animal's footprint on a mountain. A couple also allegedly saw the reportedly extinct animal crossing the road back in February. In 2018, an individual reported a sighting at Hartz Mountains National Park. The person believed that it was a Tasmanian tiger along with two more cubs. In 2017, a group presented footage to prove that the thylacine is not actually extinct. After going on an expedition in a Tasmanian town, the team claimed to have documented the animal barking. Despite these claims, the DPIPWE has not made any pronouncements saying that the thylacine is not actually extinct. On the DPIPWE's website, the agency listed some of the conducted searches for the animal, which did not produce any hard evidence of the Tasmanian tiger's existence. Nonetheless, the agency said it will continue to document any sightings of the animal.
