P&C drink and review a blonde ale from the Brookeville Beer Farm, then discuss the process of de-extinction -- bringing animals back from the graves of history. Using DNA from dire wolf fossils from 13,000 and 72,000 years ago, Colossal Biosciences claims to have brought the dire wolf back from extinction. What they really did was edit the genes of a gray wolf to look a little more like a dire wolf. The pups -- Romulus, Remus, and Khaleesi -- are white and a little large, but they're not dire wolves. They're just gray wolves that have had some work done. The project raises larger questions. Is de-extinction a good idea? Should we bring back extinct species? The boys discuss. The American biotech company Colossal Biosciences recently made headlines around the world with claims it had resurrected the dire wolf, an animal that went extinct at the end of the last ice age. But does what the company has done amount to ‘de-extinction' or should we instead think of these pups as genetically modified versions of the grey wolves that exist today? Science correspondent Nicola Davis tells Madeleine Finlay about the process that created these wolves, how other companies are joining the effort to use genetic modification in conservation, and why some experts have serious ethical questions about bringing back species whose habitats no longer exist.
Fancy Scientist: A Material Girl Living in a Sustainable World
Chances are, you've seen the headlines that the dire wolf is no longer extinct. The company Colossal Biosciences claims to have brought it back from extinction in the form of three living, breathing dire wolf pups. But my headlines have actually been flooded with scientists saying “not so fast…” so what is really going on here? Having studied African forest elephants using genetics during my Ph.D., a species related to the extinct woolly mammoth and a target of de-extinction efforts, this topic has long been on my mind to discuss on the podcast. Given the recent dire wolf news, I've been getting so many questions about this, that I thought it would be a great time to discuss this and prepared this episode as soon as I could (despite a myriad of technical difficulties). De-extinction is the concept of bringing back a fully extinct species back to life and as you've seen now as evidenced from the dire wolves, scientists are actively working on it. But should they be? And why? First, I break down the dire wolf headlines, offering insight into the scientific process of de-extinction as a whole, how the team at Colossal Biosciences approached de-extinction and why, and how most scientists feel about their result: Are these really dire wolves? I then open up to a larger conversation about de-extinction: why are scientists attempting to de-extinct species at all? Is there conservation merit in doing so? Which species are being considered? I address a plethora of topics as well as moral and ethical considerations. Specifically, I go over: What exactly is de-extinction and how it can be doneWhy de-extinction is so hard to actually doHow Colossal Biosciences resurrected what they are calling the dire wolfWhat scientists think of Colossal's dire wolves; are they really dire wolves? Why or why not?Insights on how scientists think about species in generalWhat else goes into a species being a species aside from geneticsWhat is the point of de-extinction? Why should scientists attempt it? Which kinds of species are being considered? My opinions on de-extinction: which species are okay to bring back and whyDoes de-extinction help conservation? How? How de-extinction can hurt conservation effortsHow the Trump administration is attempting to use de-extinction efforts to undermine the Endangered Species ActAnd more!Dream of being a wildlife biologist, zoologist, conservation biologist, or ecologist? Doro and Tricia are excited to have Ben Lamm, CEO at Colossal Biosciences, to talk about his work in the field of conservation. Colossal's vision is to "make extinction a thing of the past," an ongoing effort with considerable progress. Colossal scientists recently ushered the birth of three dire wolf pups, a species that went extinct about 10,000 years ago. Ben talks about how the concept of de-extinction went from an idea to fruition, touching on the challenges and achievements it presents. He highlights different efforts and approaches to conservation, particularly as technology and human capability advance. Ben encourages listeners to think about their relationship with the environment, and how humans can preserve and protect it.
In Jurassic Park, scientists bio-engineered dinosaurs by splicing preserved dino DNA with modern-day frog DNA. It sounded like science fiction…until now. A real-life biotech company with visions of “de-extinction” recently spliced gray wolf DNA with that of the dire wolf, a mammal that's been extinct for thousands of years. And they have plans to do the same thing with other extinct species. This week we're going off the radar with Dr. Jay Odenbaugh, a professor and researcher who specializes in the ethics of de-extinction. We'll discuss what this company did, and what the implications might mean.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
About the Host: Chris Clarke is an environmental advocate and the knowledgeable host of the "90 Miles from Needles" podcast. He is committed to desert protection and conservation, bringing decades of experience and insights into environmental issues, policy discussions, and activism. Known for drawing attention to critical environmental concerns, including endangered species and responsible land use, Chris actively engages with audiences who care deeply about ecological preservation and advocacy. Episode Summary: In this engaging episode of the "90 Miles from Needles" podcast, host Chris Clarke examines the much-talked-about claim of dire wolf de-extinction by a biotech firm. Chris navigates through the intricacies of this scientific breakthrough, unearthing the partial truths and sensationalism, while keeping a focus on broader environmental implications. Throughout the episode, Chris challenges the notion of de-extinct species fitting seamlessly into today's ecosystems. Drawing parallels between the dire wolves and other potential candidates for de-extinction, like the Shasta ground sloth, he discusses the feasibility and ethical considerations of such scientific pursuits. The conversation isn't just about biology; it encompasses the cultural and ecological dynamics that ground these animals in past and present narratives. Tying together scientific discourse and environmental activism, Chris highlights why preserving current ecosystems is critical for any species reintroduction success. Key Takeaways: The idea of de-extincting dire wolves is riddled with complexities, from scientific limitations to ecological impacts. Dire wolves possibly have physical adaptations ill-suited to surviving in today’s drastically altered ecosystems, calling into question their viability if brought back. De-extinction efforts are providing the antienvironmentalists in power with arguments to rescind environmental protection laws. The example of California condors serves as a reminder of the financial and ecological challenges faced in conservation and species restoration efforts. Chris advocates for a holistic approach to conservation that considers ecosystems' dynamic nature and the cultural knowledge animals pass down through generations. Notable Quotes: "Even if we grant Colossal Biosciences claims… the dire wolf is useless without its habitat." "The ecosystem that held the species and the relationships changes… they become, to some extent, new ecosystems." "What's the difference between that and releasing an invasive species into a habitat that doesn't have a niche for it?" "As long as they're in Botanic gardens, we don't have to worry, right? But it's the relationships that are important here." "If the process of theoretical de extinction is going to be used as an excuse to get our basic environmental laws…" Resources: Learn more about the podcast and support 90 Miles from Needles: https:/90milesfromneedles.com Hank Green's response: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ar0zgedLyTw Hank offers a correction: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8jGFT2rnL8Y Ventana Wildlife Society Condor Status pge: https://www.ventanaws.org/status.html The Bernie & AOC event in Los Angeles (All 5.5 hours!) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mU_GhbFH2Gw&t=11697s Listen to the full episode for a comprehensive understanding of the topic discussed and stay tuned for more insightful discussions from "90 Miles from Needles." Running Sheet: Making De-extinction Claims Extinct 00:00:00 Intro Introduction 00:00:00 SA Drink Of The Week No South Australian Drink Of The Week, this week. 00:02:52 Assoc. Prof. Bastien Llamas Winter isn’t just coming, apparently it arrived in October last year when Colossal Biosciences announced they’d successfully “de-extincted” the dire wolf after a 10,000-year absence. Now, for anyone watching the news or scrolling through social media lately, you might think you’ve stepped into an episode of Game of Thrones—and the connection is no coincidence, with George R.R. Martin himself serving as a “cultural adviser” to this company. I first caught wind of this story through our good mate Michael Mills, better known to many South Aussie school kids as Professor Flint, who was absolutely scathing about these claims. And I’ll admit, I thought exploring this topic might be a bit of scientific curiosity until I was driving my teenage daughters recently, and overheard them chatting excitedly about how “cool it is that wolves aren’t extinct anymore” and that “mammoths will be back soon too.” That’s when I realised we needed some cool-headed expertise on the subject. With us today is Associate Professor Bastien Llamas from the University of Adelaide’s School of Biological Sciences and the Australian Centre for Ancient DNA. Bastien’s work on ancient DNA and human adaptation to environmental and cultural stressors puts him in the perfect position to help us understand what’s actually happening with these de-extinction claims. Welcome. The interview opens amid the cultural echoes of Game of Thrones, with Steve noting how Colossal Biosciences has seemingly found a “middle ground” in the stark binary of winning or dying in the game of thrones – by claiming to resurrect dire wolves after a 10,000-year absence. This connection is no coincidence, with George R.R. Martin himself serving as a cultural advisor to the company. “If it looks like a dire wolf and it howls like a dire wolf, it’s… well, a dire wolf for the sake of PR purposes,” Steve observes, setting the stage for Bastien to methodically dismantle the scientific validity of these claims. The discussion begins with fundamentals, as Bastien explains what extinction actually means from a scientific perspective: “The extinction process is really the total disappearance of a particular species from the surface of the earth.” The conversation takes a fascinating turn when Bastien addresses the technological impossibility of true de-extinction: “To de-extinct means literally bringing back individuals from that very species to life… if that extinction happened hundreds or thousands of years ago, it means that we would need to have intact cells from these particular individuals. And through some cloning technologies, be able to create an embryo… Now we’re talking about science fiction.” When pressed on the ecological reality of reintroducing extinct species, Bastien paints a vivid picture of the challenges: “If a species got extinct in the first place, it’s very likely because there were some factors — environmental change or human overkill — that means the world has slowly changed to the point where that species was not adapted to their environment.” His specific example about dire wolves resonates with practical concerns: “A nice big cow would probably be a great prey for that wolf. And I am just waiting for the reaction of the farmers.” The scientific breakdown of Colossal’s claims is particularly enlightening, with Bastien revealing that dire wolves and grey wolves split evolutionarily 5.7 million years ago: “For 5.7 million years, they evolved differently. Dire wolf became those big whoopy canid, um, you know, hypercar, the gray wolves were more adaptable, uh, smaller size, and a diet that was a little bit more diverse.” This evolutionary divergence created approximately 12.5 million genetic differences, yet Colossal made only 20 genetic changes to grey wolves. “Twenty changes out of 12.5 million is nothing,” Bastien emphasises. The interview takes a philosophical turn when Steve asks about the one motivation that might have ethical value – atonement for human-caused extinctions. Bastien thoughtfully responds, “Even atoning for that doesn’t mean that we’re going to change our behaviors,” noting that such technology might create a dangerous sense of complacency about current conservation challenges. Perhaps most powerfully, Bastien offers an analogy that crystallises the issue: “If we take a chimp and we introduce 20 changes in the genome of the chimp, so it loses the hair, for example, and the shape of the skull is modified… would we consider that genetically engineered chimp a human?” The answer is clearly no, undermining the claim that genetically modified grey wolves are actually dire wolves. The conversation closes with wisdom about critical thinking, with Bastien suggesting that while we should allow ourselves to be amazed by scientific headlines initially, we must follow with critical reflection: “You need to let it go. At first you need to be amazed. You need to be curious. You need to be dreaming a little bit. But then once that first phase is over, you need to sit down a little bit and think about really what the information is about.” 00:51:09 Musical Pilgrimage In the Musical Pilgrimage, we feature Rumble Rumble by Professor Flint. This is a song about the Permian extinction, known as The Great Dying, in which 96% of all life was wiped out. It reminds us of the fragility of nature, and the impermanence of all things. It also reminds us of nature’s resilience. While it took millions of years to recover, given the chance, and time, nature was able to recover, and we enter the remarkable Age of Dinosaurs. The death of some, allows for the evolution of others. Michael Mills, the man behind Professor Flint and HeapsGood Music, is highlighted as someone gaining popularity by “staying true to the science” – a refreshing counterpoint to the misleading headlines discussed throughout the episode. Steve shares exciting news about Michael’s upcoming performances at the Lyme Regis Fossil Festival in the UK (making history as the first Australian to grace that stage), as well as his Commonwealth National Science Week grant supporting “The Ammonites,” an all-female dinosaur-loving supergroup touring across Australia this August.Support the show: https://theadelaideshow.com.au/listen-or-download-the-podcast/adelaide-in-crowd/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
De-extinction is no longer just science fiction. In this episode, we dive into the controversial concept of bringing back extinct species—specifically the dire wolf—using cutting-edge genetic engineering. Inspired by the headline-grabbing efforts to resurrect woolly mammoths, scientists are now exploring how DNA from ancient canids could be used to reintroduce this Ice Age predator into modern ecosystems. Genetic engineering plays a central role in this story. From piecing together fragmented DNA to editing modern genomes, researchers face significant scientific, ethical, and ecological hurdles. What would it mean to bring back a dire wolf? Would the creature truly be a dire wolf—or a hybrid imitation? We explore what's possible, what's fantasy, and what responsibilities come with resurrecting the past. In what is likely to be one of the major science stories of the year, Texas-based Colossal Biosciences has brought the dire wolf—or at least something very close to this ice age canine—back from extinction, with the help of genetic engineering. The remarkable achievement has been met with awe, praise, and also controversy, as experts debate the exact nature of the "dire wolves" the company has created, as well as the implications of the breakthrough and the creation of what some might call life not as we know it. This week on The Micah Hanks Program, we take a look at the remarkable news, as well as the current state of genetic science, and whether it could one day be used on humans. Finally, we also turn our attention toward popular science fiction and bizarre theories regarding alien life, and whether questions about human contact with non-human forms of intelligence might involve advanced genetic engineering. At this time we are talking about the bold venture of de-extinction of flora and fauna. What are the possible good and bad outcomes of it? What species might return by the end of this decade? How will mature respond to this? Enjoy!
Advances in genomics have created the possibility of bringing back extinct species from the past by making use of recovered DNA from preserved specimens. Companies attempting to “de-extinct” iconic species have received hundreds of millions of dollars from venture capitalists. These companies are trying to bring back iconic species that include ivory-billed woodpeckers, Tasmanian tigers, […]

This is also the week of UFO/UAP Disclosure via the New Paradigm Institute, where we discuss the latest incursion of 20 foot orbs into the air space of Air Force bases, where you might think they would have some security from these purportably alien craft. Space Junk Orbiting the Earth..Mark Garlick/Getty Images There is also some progress in the development of laser beam defence systems, such as Iron Beam protecting Israel, which could obsolete ballistic missiiles in warfare. And then there is the mystery of a major communications satellite that has mysteriously broken up into 20 pieces. We also discuss the latest in de-extinction experiments and the evoution of natural childbirth, based on personal experiences by Gabriel. We had a lot of fun toay, which I think you’ll enjoy! What is de-extinction? The process of de-extinction is all about bringing extinct species back to life. It became known in the 2010s, thanks to an ambitious plan from American geneticist George Church, who dreamed of resurrecting the woolly mammoth, an animal which has been extinct for 3700 years. Fast forward to the 2020s and Church's bioscience startup Colossal is now eding closer towards making that a reality. As of March 2022, Colossal announced that it had raised a total of $75M for the project. Is it really possible to revive extinct animal species? Why would we want to bring extinct species back to life? How is the idea of de-extinction being received by the scientific community? In under 3 minutes, we answer your questions! After their tragic extinction, will woolly mammoths once again walk the world alongside humanity? Colossal's Ben Lamm is here to de-extinct our skepticism! What We Discuss with Ben Lamm: Colossal Biosciences is a company working to bring back animals that, for a variety of reasons, have disappeared from the world stage in a process it calls "de-extinction." Colossal's current focus is inserting genes from the iconic woolly mammoth into Asian elephant embryos with the goal of creating hybrid elephant-mammoths that can survive the Arctic tundra. Colossal believes these modified woolly mammoths could help restore the Arctic ecosystem and sequester carbon to reduce the rate of climate change. Additionally, this research will help scientists learn more about — and more effectively treat — elephant endotheliotropic herpesvirus (EEHV), a disease among modern Asian elephant populations with a mortality rate of up to 85 percent. Colossal is still in the early stages of development, but it hopes to have the first hybrid mammoths within a decade. And much more...
