David Richman Lost his Sister to Brain Cancer and Continues to Fight in Her Memory

WE Have Cancer

On this episode of WE Have Cancer, motivational speaker and endurance athlete David Richman shares with Lee how cancer first touched his life through his late sister, June. To honor her legacy, David has completed countless races in search of connection, emotion, and perspective. Guest Biography: David Richman is an, author, entrepreneur, speaker, consultant and philanthropist. But before any of that, he was a brother to June. In 2007 June was battling her final stages of brain cancer, and David was ready to run beside her during Relay for Life. June passed away just days before the race, but David still went and ran. His experience at that race sparked a new passion in him for endurance sports for a cause. In the last decade, he has completed over 50 triathlons, over 50 runs longer than marathon length, and most recently, he biked 4,700 miles cycling across the country to interview participants for his new book exploring the emotional side of cancer, Cycle of Lives. Table of Contents:David's Story Begins with June David's sister June received news that she had serious brain cancer in her forties, and that it was most likely terminal. Her diagnosis changed everything. She was the impetus to David's project and nonprofit work, and remains his constant inspiration.  What Would June Think of David's Work? June said the thing that sucked the most about her cancer was that she wouldn't get to see her kids grow up. Through David's work, June is not forgotten, and her kids get to see her legacy continue to inspire connection.  5000 Miles on a Bike, Searching for Answers Inspired by June's Relay for Life team in 2007 (called the June Buggies), David promised her he would run right alongside her. But June passed away just a few days before the race. Over time, David wanted to meet and interview all these people touched by cancer and bring them together. So he hopped on a bike and went city to city in a matter of six weeks. There's So Much Hope Lee asks, was the biggest surprise while working on Cycle of Lives? David says he went into the project thinking it would be dark and heavy all the time, but he was surprised and inspired to find how hopeful and wise so many people were along the way. Seeking Connection Drives Everything How did David learn to dig deep and lean into these meaningful (and often challenging) conversations? He says he loves “trying to figure the puzzle out” when interviewing people, and finds true joy in doing so. “I was always on the outside looking in.” In his book Cycle of Lives, he talks a bit about how up until his thirties he felt like he was never the main character of his own story. He wanted to get out of the shadows and capture stories that would spread light, emotion, and inspiration, just like June. Why the Bike Ride, Instead of Picking Up the Phone? Dave says, “I think we're all connected by stories, and we're connected by emotion.” To him it felt natural and obvious to jump on his bike and ride from city to city to string everything together.  "June got me through it." David learned, over the course of the physically and emotionally challenging journey, that he was never running away from anything. He was always running toward the next great story, and that brought him peace, joy, and connection along the way. Being Touched By Cancer Changed Him Dave shares how much he's learned about perspective and authenticity. He learned that it's okay for people to care for him, and to care about him. And he learned that he can't be afraid to say something and make a new connection. But what if I Say the Wrong Thing? Too often, we can let our own discomfort be the barrier between making meaningful connections. David says, who has time for that? He'd rather push through the discomfort and form that bridge of human emotion, gratitude, and connection together. Through David's search for his own K9 partner, he learned firsthand that healthy, genetically-tested, U.S.A-bred dogs were simply not available in the marketplace today. Dogs from other nations are often procured and deployed by the military and law enforcement at significant cost, only to find that their temperaments or preventable illnesses render these dogs unsuitable for service. Black Rock canines was founded to solve these challenges, by establishing the first large-scale breeding program of high-performing, healthy, genetically-tested working dogs, service dogs, and pets in the U.S.A.

This week Amy and Mike talk with author Aaron Armstrong about his new "Big Truths Bible Storybook" for kids. What is truth? Can we make up our own truth? In the “Big Truths Bible Storybook”, readers ages 6 to 10 will learn that God's Word is the source of all truth. They'll find 52 stories each tied to a big truth found in the Bible. For example, through Joseph's story, kids will see that God is in control of everything in heaven and on earth. Through David's story, they'll learn that grace is when God gives us something good even when we don't deserve it. The big truths of God's Word can sometimes be deep and difficult, but the “Big Truths Bible Storybook” makes them relatable to young readers through simple storytelling, beautiful artwork, discussion questions, and more! After reading this book, kids will better understand that God's Word can be trusted, and His truths will last forever. Aaron Armstrong is an author, blogger, and Brand Manager for The Gospel Project, based outside of Nashville, Tennessee. He has written several books, including “Epic: The Story that Changed the World” as well as the screenplays for the documentaries “Through The Eyes of Spurgeon”, and “LUTHER: The Life and Legacy of the German Reformer.” He writes regularly at BloggingTheologically.com, and his writing has appeared on numerous websites including The Gospel Coalition, For the Church, Crosswalk.com, and ChurchLeaders.com.

In this episode of Training Unleashed, Evan talks to David Wood, high performance coach and founder of focus.ceo, about the simple steps you can take to reap rewards that are not possible from your comfort zone. Here are some of the tips David shared: We’re more likely to regret the things we didn’t do than the things we did do. As David explained, what he wants for everyone is that when they’re sitting on their death bed that they really gave it everything, “I really went for it.” David believes that playing it safe can be one of the most dangerous things you can do. It’s perfect as it is, but there’s always more. According to David, there is always room for more. He acknowledges that it’s valid for people who are happy where they are today. There are people who, for them, not searching for more could start to get boring. And for them, “it’s perfect as it is, but I have desires and that’s also perfect.” You can’t read the label from inside the jar. For David, “I can only see what I can see and my biggest enemy is my own arrogance.” He used a game of chess to help explain this. You might see that you can take a knight, but someone else watching sees that in three moves you’re going to lose your queen. When you can get that outside perspective, you get the clarity of distance. During the interview, Evan opened himself up to coaching from David. Through David’s coaching method, Evan was able to see the situation from a different perspective. We welcome back Councilperson David Heuvelman of the Norwalk, Connecticut, City Council for a candid discussion about guns.  Gun control is the sort of subject that people tend to feel their eyes start to glaze over due to the rhetoric that surrounds the issue. It's only when mass shootings occur (and we have had an amazing spate in the last month) do people start to actively pressure their elected officials to either do something or do nothing.  It seems that the issue will be forever polarized.  However, the first step in figuring out what to do about the culture of gun ownership in the United States is to understand why people own guns in the first place.  This is where David Heuvelman comes in.  Growing up in a family that for generations kept, used and admired guns, Heuvelman was raised to look at them as a useful tool for hunting, as well as a sports instrument for target practice.   Through David, those of us who have not been raised with guns can appreciate why they play an important part in the lives of those who use them for those purposes. Heuvelman, also being a councilperson, is part of a suburban city that has to wrestle with the consequences of those who have access for guns without the acclimation and training.  Those people, especially those with mental illness, are increasingly part of the rash of mass killings.  How to preserve rights and yet preserve society becomes a conundrum.  Add into it the money-factor, that is, the desire of gun and gun-related manufacturers to not spoil a healthy market, and politicians that are supported by gun lobbies like the NRA the issue begins to take on the polarizing and paralyzing aspect that it has had for the past 40 years.   Finally, the idea of what was meant by the second amendment becomes an issue unto itself.  Were the founding fathers trying to make sure we all had guns?  Was it something that was more in step with the late 18th century United States?  Is it an amendment that, like the third amendment that doesn't make a lot of sense in modern America?  We attempt not to take sides on issues, but look at the issues themselves that leave us with a Gunundrum on Strung Out.

In his New York Times bestselling book, The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, Stephen Covey tells people to imagine what they want said at their funeral. When we think about how we want to be remembered we should begin with the end in mind. Did you know that your life will shape your legacy? How we live will determine how people will remember us. And how we steward the things God has given us will influence the way people think of us long after we are gone. King David never read Covey’s book, but he knew that the life he leads would ultimately shape his legacy. It is no wonder then that in one of his final prayers he declares before the Lord that everything comes directly from God. David recognized that all of the wealth the Israelites were able to provide for the building of the Temple was actually from God’s hands (vv.14, 16). This raw, humble sentiment is the bedrock of biblical stewardship. Through David’s prayer, he teaches his son, his people, and us that God is beyond generous. The right response on our part is to be generous. David also reminds his people that even though they were living in the land, they were still “foreigners and strangers,” and that the only right to the land was through God’s provision and sovereignty. David said that at the heart of generosity ought to be integrity and honesty. For him, the motive dictated the motion (v. 17). David concludes by getting to the heart of the matter which is ultimately a matter of the heart. He requested that the Lord help his son’s heart, and the Israelites’ hearts, to be fixed on Yahweh. >> Look at your life and ask, “What is mine and what is the Lord’s?” As you reflect, I hope you come to the similar conclusion David did, that everything comes from the Lord.

Scripture Reading: 2 Samuel 2:1-7 “Now then, be strong and brave, for Saul your master is dead, and the people of Judah have anointed me king. . . .” 2 Samuel 2:7 Israel is at a precarious moment in their history. They have enemies on all sides. Their first king has just died. They face an internal struggle. Will they descend into chaos or become the nation God has called them to be, a light to the other nations? At this crucial moment, David steps up. He prayerfully pursues God’s leading and welcomes the anointing of the people as their king. Remember, God had chosen him earlier, telling Samuel to anoint him (1 Samuel 16). So now David’s kingship becomes a reality, fulfilling that earlier promise. And David shows graciousness to those who have been loyal to Saul. Through David, God is going to unite a troubled nation and give them good leadership. God is bringing order out of chaos, new life out of a time of degeneration and death. The people of Israel must increasingly be dead to Saul and alive to David as king. So too, when we trust in Jesus as Lord, we transfer our allegiance from our old degenerate life of selfishness and sin to begin a new life in Christ. We bring our lives under his rule and reign. We proclaim and begin to embody his kingdom. What does it mean to be a Christian? One way to describe it is to say that we live under a new King. We are loyal to the loving King whom God the Father has given to the world, and we live in the hope and service of his kingdom. Loving God, break the power of sin in our lives. Help us to count ourselves dead to sin but alive to you through Jesus. Amen.

David & the StrangerThe God Who Used to Show UpAugust 9, 2020 The dictionary defines “giant” as: a person or thing of unusually great size, power, or importance. The name Goliath has come to imply something that is big, really BIG. There are goliath frogs, goliath grouper fish, goliath spiders, goliath burgers, and my favorite, the Goliath rollercoaster at Six Flags! The common denominator? Each of these is enormous – relatively speaking – and most likely overwhelming in one way or another! “Giants” come in all shapes and even, all sizes. What is big, scary and overwhelming to me might not be to you, and vice versa. This week, as we continue in our Stranger Things series, we’re looking at the story of David, the giant slayer. Through David’s life we’ll see him in moments of confidence and, in others, crippled by crisis and chaos. We’ll also see how God sustained David through the valleys and the victories. Are you facing your own giant right now? In need of an infusion of courage? Of hope? Or strength? Maybe this season, fraught with insecurity and strife, is more than you can cope with. Perhaps your “giant” is closer to home. Maybe it’s depression or lost dreams. Maybe it’s a broken relationship. We live and work and breathe – day in and day out – in a world that can be overwhelming in a myriad of ways. So how do we keep moving forward in faith? Let’s learn together from the lessons of David’s life this Sunday.

Our culture is at a major cross-roads and standing on the verge of a crisis of epic proportions. The latest national surveys reveal that the lack of friendship, loneliness and isolation are at all-time highs in America. The results promise to be catastrophic. The good news is that God offers a better way and a better life. Through David’s friendship with Jonathan we get a picture of the type of true friendship God has designed for us to experience both with Him and with other people. We see that true friendship is a gift from God, is fuel for our spiritual lives and is found in community. We also see that the DNA of this type of friendship is is built on counter-cultural principals like; humility, self-sacrifice, loyalty and honesty. Ultimately, this points us to the truest and best friend one can have in Jesus. It’s through that friendship that we’re enabled to become the type of friend and build the type of friendships we all need to thrive and flourish in life!

Faith Church - Hamilton, Ohio

Welcome to the Wealthy Wellthy Life with Krisstina Wise. David Whitlock hasn’t showered in 13 years — why? Because not all bacteria on your skin is bad for you. Sound a little crazy? Well, it isn’t. There’s a big difference between being ‘clean’ vs. being ‘sterile’. Through David’s company, AOBiome, he has developed a spray with ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB) and sells it for commercial use under the name Mother Dirt. This is how he’s kept clean for all these years! Jasmina Aganovic is the President of Mother Dirt as well as the General Manager for Consumer Products at AOBiome. Jasmina and her team study the importance of good bacteria on the skin and its impact on our health. Through her research, Jasmina and David have come up with biome friendly products that do not kill the good bacteria on your skin. David initially responded poorly to the losses in his own life, but he came to realize that everything in this world is temporary and insufficient for providing refuge. Woodbury Community Church Sermons

For a guy who was called a man after God’s own heart, David did some pretty stupid things! Just after being anointed King over Israel, David started to show some chinks in his spiritual armor. The funny thing is, he couldn’t see it. Sometimes in our “spiritual highs” we forget some of the most basic principles of following Jesus. A relationship with Christ can’t be based solely on emotion. It also can’t be based solely on reason. Through David and Michal’s relationship we see the danger of both extremes, and recognize that in the end a life that exists to glorify ourselves brings misery. A live that is lived for His glory brings ultimate satisfaction. (2 Samuel 5-6, Psalm 106-107)
