At the end of the show a question from Stephen Cameron. Recommendations: Stuart “Rabbits” by Hugo Rifkind Tommo has just started at a new school – a training ground for the Scottish elite – when his friend Johnnie's brother is found dead in a Land Rover on a Highland farm. There's a shotgun at his feet. Nobody seems clear about what has happened, least of all Tommo. A child of the middle class, and with new independence thrust upon him, Tommo finds himself invited into fading crumbling houses. It's the early nineties and this elite is struggling for relevance. Alienated from the mainstream, and running low on inherited wealth, his peers have retreated into snobbery and fatalism. Half-remembered traditions mix with decadence and an awful lot of small dead animals. And sometimes, not just animals. Awed by their poise and seduced by their hedonism, Tommo gradually becomes aware of sinister currents beneath the surface and a suppressed rage that threatens to explode into violence. https://birlinn.co.uk/product/rabbits-2/ Eamonn “Our Dirty War: The British State and the IRA” BBC Northern Ireland - Peter Taylor Stakeknife was a super-spy, a secret agent working for both the British and the IRA. He walked a precarious tightrope in an undercover war where exposure meant death. Operation Kenova, the long-running investigation into Stakeknife and the so-called dirty war, which is now coming to a close, brings Peter Taylor back to Northern Ireland. He revisits the chilling IRA interrogation tapes he initially uncovered and talks again to grieving families devasted by the loss of their loved ones to the IRA's brutal interrogators and killers. https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m001x24x Sara www.salvo.scot https://liberation.scot/ “Doun-Hauden: The Socio-Political Determinants of Scottish Independence” by Alfred Baird There is an increasingly urgent need to provide a better understanding of the phenomenon that is Scottish independence. Many commentators assume general policy matters remain key influencers of voter decisions on whether to support or reject Scottish independence. This may grossly underestimate and misunderstand the real complexity of the matter. Here, the author uses his academic expertise to ‘ground out' an analytical framework which helps to identify, based on analysis of key environmental factors, the fundamental determinants of Scottish independence. It is argued that the framework, entitled ‘The Socio-Political Determinants of Scottish Independence', permits far deeper analysis and understanding of the Scottish independence challenge. Collectively, the nine socio-political determinants which the author has ‘ground out' of the data collected and analysed, help to explain and underpin the quest for, and outline the barriers opposing, Scottish independence. Each of the determinants is analysed using appropriate and relevant theories and supporting data. It is argued that this work represents a new, comprehensive, robust, and scientific way to approach the subject of Scottish independence. It is an approach that has arguably never been taken before in any of the growing mass of literature concerning the subject of Scotland's independence, and hence represents an important and unique contribution offering new and provocative insights into Scotland's quest for liberation. As such the book will be of interest to those interested in Scotland, in Scottish independence and to self-determination of peoples and nations more generally. https://www.amazon.co.uk/Doun-Hauden-Socio-Political-Determinants-Scottish-Independence-ebook/dp/B086ZTRXM8

Get .1 ASHA CEU hereEpisode SummaryHey overworked SLP - feeling like you want to find a rock to crawl under for a minute or two? Burnout is a topic that hits close to home for me as an SLP of 15 years. In some ways, I think I started to feel that burn even before I got my CCC's. Why are we and others in the “helping professions” so much more likely to experience burnout than others braving the workforce? This week, burnout expert, Dr. Julie Slowiak, shares her own personal experience with overwhelm and under-joy in the workplace, and offers SLP's the strategies we need to recognize burnout and to address it head on. Do you find yourself critical or cynical at work? Perhaps you're not looking forward to your day-to-day grind, or you are consistently not meeting expectations (your own or those placed upon you). Whatever the sign, you might be experiencing or rapidly approaching burnout, which not only negatively impacts your personal health and happiness, but also your professional performance. Tune in to learn how to spot burnout and to learn why it might be happening. You'll also gain some mindful self-care practices to deal with burnout as Dr. Slowiak challenges the misconceived notion of self-care as just a manicure and bubble bath. What if the key to a booming business was more than just increasing sales? Former Chick-fil-A Vice-President of Marketing, David Salyers, explains how the company's values and goals are different from its competitors. He shares the principles you can apply in your business now to create more raving fans and earn more money. David says to stop “creating transactions” and start “creating relationships” with your customers. Many “nuggets” of wisdom in this episode! What you will learn: Find a job you don't want to retire from Create culture intentionally “Get rich” business vs. “be rich” business How to balance the value equation Create raving fans Money should be the cherry on top Quotes: “If your goal is to stop doing something as quickly as possible, what does that tell you about how much you're enjoying what you're doing, if your goal is to stop doing it?” – David Salyers “You have to become the organization that the people you're looking for are looking for.” – David Salyers “I've come to the conclusion that customers will never be more excited, more passionate, more raving fans of a company than your own employees are.” – David Salyers “So many people think they sort of stumble into culture, but as you're talking about it you can create it and mold it and shape it and design it and it happens with focus and intentionality.” – Derrick Kinney “Values are only really values when you're willing to sacrifice for them.” – David Salyers “True riches in life will never be found in a bank account. They're found in the richness of relationships, in the richness of feeling valued, and the richness of having meaningful work and all these things.” – David Salyers “If we have enough fans, sales will never be a problem. If we create enough fans, they'll recruit other people to come do business with.” – David Salyers “A way to think about it is, how can I make the day to do so enriching and engaging and exciting that it's almost like the money I make is the cherry on top, not the point.” – David Salyers Free Valuable Report for our Listeners: “3 Beliefs About Money Your Kids Should Learn That No One is Teaching Them” https://goodmoneyframework.com Follow The Good Money Show on Instagram! https://www.instagram.com/goodmoneyframework Recommended Resources: Davidgsalyers.com

Do you find your value in being a perfectionist and getting all those boxes checked? As a mom, it’s easy to worship structure. Especially when that structure is working and progress - physical progress - is happening. But what happens when God desires something different for you? What do you do when your plans get thwarted and digression seems to set in? On today’s episode, you get to meet a remarkable woman that I’ve had the privilege of walking alongside on her health and fitness journey. Ally used to proudly check all the boxes and had a dramatic (30 pound!) transformation to tell. But then life happened - pregnancy, injury, career, family - and progress looked very different. For Ally, being fully mature and stable in her health does NOT look like perfection. Far from it. Prepare to be inspired to see your own journey a little differently! It's something that matters more than money, success, and even retirement. It's investment in people. This is the truth that David Salyers. Chick-Fil-A marketing executive and author of Remarkable, has learned in his career at Chick-Fil-A, which began four hours after his college graduation and has been more than he could have imagined. I recently had the privilege of chatting with him about why he chose a career at Chick-Fil-A, even though it offered him 75% less salary than the other opportunities he had upon graduation. Rather than trying to retire as fast as he could, David chose to pursue work he wouldn't want to retire from--work he wouldn't want to quit at the first opportunity. “If you love what you do, you'll never work another day in your life,” he said. “And so I feel like I've spent my whole life not working a day because I've loved what I've done, who I did it with, and the mission we were on.”

In the 118th episode of Keep Moving Forward, I interview entrepreneur, author, and former UGA swimmer, Nick Salyers. “My sport is something that I do, it’s not who I am.” Your identity is so much bigger than the circumstance you are in right now. Though you consider yourself an athlete, an entrepreneur, a student, any title you can think of, that is not who you are, it is something you are doing right now. Nick Salyers learned that firsthand through his own collegiate athletic journey and into his life as an entrepreneur. In being lead by something so much larger than himself, and rooting his identity and worth not in his sport, but in a belief in God, Nick notes: “A bad race didn’t destroy me and a good race didn’t build me up unnecessarily. I was able to stay level-headed. My faith did that.” Remaining steadfast in the most challenging and in the most rewarding moments, Nick was able to keep a level head and continue to push forward into the bright future he is called into. I am so happy that I had the opportunity to speak with him about his journey through faith, sports, and entrepreneurship, and I hope you all enjoy my interview with Nick Salyers. Dr. Randy Ross, founder and CEO (Chief Enthusiasm Officer) of Remarkable!, is a “craftsman of culture and a catalytic coach.” A master of cultural transformation, his unique understanding of employee engagement offers practical solutions for increasing the morale and performance of teams. His two-fold approach teaches: first, we are all designed to create value in life. When we create value, life is full and satisfying. The second is that all the good things we want in life are the result of value creation. As we create value for others, we experience that same happiness we bring to them.

Abigail Salyers is a Professor of Microbiology and the G. William Arends Professor of Molecular and Cell Biology at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and her research focuses on the ecology of microorganisms in the human body and the comings and goings of antibiotic resistance genes, particularly genes in Bacteroides species. Dr. Salyers is ASM’s 2009 Graduate Microbiology Teaching Awardee. If you’ve ever tried teaching or mentoring, you know it’s not always easy, but for an eminent scientist, teaching at the undergraduate or graduate level must be incredibly difficult. After all, once you reach a certain level of knowledge in any field, it can be hard to relate your knowledge to people who know relatively little about it. Dr. Salyers has tackled 100-level biology courses with as many as 300 students, taught one-on-one at the lab bench, and been an instructor at an intensive summer course in microbial diversity, all while rising to the top of her field in research. In this interview, I talked with Dr. Salyers about the most influential teacher in her own life (you might be surprised to learn who that is), about whether antibiotic resistance is getting the kind of play it deserves, and about why the baboon vagina is an interesting study system.
