“This is unlike any sporting event I've ever been to.” Ryan Clark The Savannah Bananas are best described as a wildly entertaining, baseball-meets-circus experience that blends sports with showmanship. They've reinvented the traditional baseball game by creating “Banana Ball,” a faster, fan-first version of the sport with unique rules, dancing players, and nonstop crowd engagement. More than just the Harlem Globetrotters of baseball—it's competition at the highest , part athleticism, part theater, and 100% fun. The Savannah Bananas aren't just a baseball team — they're a movement. In this episode, we sit down with Jesse Cole, the visionary in the yellow tux, and his wife and business counterpart, Emily, who welcome Ryan, Channing, and Fred to their baseball mecca as they break down how the Savannah Bananas took the most traditional sport in America and turned it into a high-energy, sold-out, must-see experience. From dancing players to a fan-first philosophy, Jesse shares how breaking the rules, betting on fun, and building a unique culture created a global sensation. This episode is about more than baseball — it's about leadership, trailblazing, and having the guts to pivot when the world says play it safe. Games are packed with choreographed dances, stilt-walking players, and spontaneous celebrations. Although this blend of baseball and performance art has drawn comparisons to the Harlem Globetrotters- Ryan, Fred and Channing learn quickly the competition is fierce and far from scripted. Under owner Jesse Cole's leadership, the team prioritizes fan experience above all. This includes all-inclusive low ticket pricing, ad-free ballparks, and interactive elements that have re-ignited a love for America's past time and how this team turned from a struggling minor league squad into a global entertainment sensation. It's not just baseball — it's Banana Ball.. And for the players, Baseball will never be the same and that's ok because the athletes embrace Banana Ball as an opportunity to shine, be attached to a sport they love while inspiring millions around the world with fun, entertainment and pure joy. Stars Kyle "KJ" Jackson, Malachi Mitchel and Bret Helton share with the guys their backstory boasting high-skill levels, being a part of viral moments and creating a bucket-list attraction that has led to selling out NFL and MLB stadiums across the country! The Savannah Bananas have become a viral sensation by transforming baseball into an electrifying entertainment experience that appeals to fans of all ages. Beyond baseball- We learn the Cole's motivation and passion in their personal and family life run parallel to their gratitude in general, as they give us a look into their family dynamic and opening up not just their hearts but their homes to fostering kids, adopting their two little girls and using the banana's platform for positivity around fostering and adoption. Buying into Banana ball is only through blood, sweat and tears as we uncover how these talented athletes choose to join the Banana family, and how it's not about wins and losses- it's how you are seen on and off the field and what drives them each day to give fans an unprecedented experience. Truly an inspirational story of second chances for athletes and making big leaps for entrepreneurs who aren't afraid to take chances, follow a dream and turn their passion into purpose. Tap into this conversation and social for our full conversation and see Ryan, Channing and Fred get immersed into Banana culture and become fans for life. Jesse Cole, the founder of the Savannah Bananas, opens up about the struggles he and his wife, Emily, faced as they became the proud owners of a baseball team in Savannah. He reflects on their journey, from living in a bug-infested apartment and sleeping on a double-sized air mattress to the pivotal moment the couple decided to go “all-in” by selling their house to finance the team.
Laurel Ridge Community College hosts Leadercast 2025 April 24, 2025 / 23:21 The Leadercast 2025 event, set to take place in June, promises an unprecedented opportunity for both current and aspiring leaders to enhance their leadership skills. Hosted by Laurel Ridge Community College, this event boasts a lineup of world-renowned speakers, all set to offer invaluable insights and inspiration. Host Janet Michael connects with Christine Kriz, the Director of Corporate Training at Laurel Ridge Community College to learn details. One of the unique aspects of Leadercast is its inclusiveness – it's open to individuals and teams alike, offering everyone a chance to learn and grow. Christine passionately expresses the perpetual value of leadership development, likening it to a lifelong journey. 'Just like communication, leadership is something you can always improve,' she says. Historically, Leadercast began in partnership with Chick-fil-A and grew to become its own entity due to its immense popularity. With leaders ranging from fighter pilots to Olympic gold medalists, the lineup is designed to inspire and captivate. Christine reassures even the skeptics, noting how engaging the speakers are, saying, 'They are so captivating and inspiring, the 20 minutes is done, and you're like, I want them to talk more.' The event also features the Winchester Book Gallery, where attendees can purchase books by the speakers. Janet highlights an essential element of Leadercast – relatability. Unlike some events where speakers come from privileged backgrounds, Leadercast speakers often have humble beginnings. This relatability factor makes the event even more impactful. Christine shares the story of Jesse Cole, co-founder of the Savannah Bananas baseball team, who risked everything to bring his vision to life. 'Now they're billionaires,' she says, emphasizing that anyone can achieve greatness with the right mindset. This year's theme, 'Human Intelligence,' will feature various speakers, each addressing different facets of leadership and communication. Christine recounts some of the key speakers, including Hal Elrod, an extraordinary survivor and motivational speaker, and Christian Boucousis, a fighter pilot who teaches the concept of 'thought loops.' The event isn't just about listening; it's interactive and engaging. Janet emphasizes this, reinforcing that attendees will not be bored, thanks in part to local leader Jay Foreman. With networking breaks, fun exercises, and numerous giveaways, the event offers a well-rounded experience. Good news for businesses and teams: there's a price incentive. For every six people registered, the seventh ticket is free. Christine also mentions how easy it is to register, making the process hassle-free and accessible. Leadercast is perfectly timed this year, with early bird registration closing on May 5th. Christine urges everyone to sign up before enjoying their Cinco de Mayo margaritas to avail of the discount. 'It's $149 if you register on or before May 5th. After that, it goes up to $189,' she adds. Finally, Christine emphasizes the value of leadership training, not just within the workplace but also in daily life. 'You could be leading your family, a committee, or a sports team. Leadership skills are universally applicable,' she says. Leadercast 2025 is more than just an event; it's a transformative experience that promises to be both educational and entertaining. Christine sums it up best: 'The reviews we get on the evaluations every year are life-changing. It's just life-changing because these are skills that anybody can use and will make your life so much easier.' So mark your calendars and prepare to be inspired, educated, and entertained at Leadercast 2025. To register or get more information, visit laurelridgeworkforce.com/leadercast. There's a reason the Savannah Bananas have a 3 million-person ticket waitlist. And there's a reason their next game is set to draw 80,000 fans. It's more than the wild choreography or the sea of yellow—it's a business model built entirely around one thing: the fan. Teague sits down for an exclusive interview with founder and entrepreneur Jesse Cole to explore how the Bananas have reimagined what a sports franchise can be. From eliminating all sponsorships to paying the taxes and fees from tickets, the Bananas are proof that putting fans first isn't just a nice idea—it's a sustainable, strategic advantage. He shares the 10+ year journey it took to get there—filled with tough decisions, financial risk, and a relentless belief in doing things differently. Learn how you can apply the same bold thinking and long-game vision to build something that truly lasts.
Imagine a baseball team that throws out the rulebook—not just for the game, but for how they do business. Meet the Savannah Bananas, a team that's less about scoring runs and more about sparking joy.Led by owner Jesse Cole, this isn't your typical sports team. As Jesse puts it, "We have no interest in being a billion-dollar business, but we want to create a billion fans." The Bananas have grown into a fan-driven phenomenon built on a simple but radical idea: put fans first and never stop entertaining. When most teams chase sponsorship dollars, the Bananas ditch ads and create experiences people can't stop talking about.Their approach is delightfully unconventional. They've removed third-party ticketing fees, sent handwritten thank-you notes, and featured players who might break into dance mid-game. Marketing that doesn't feel like marketing. The result? They recently sold out their first NFL stadium, are building a passionate fanbase, and proving that when you truly put people first, the money follows. Correspondent Scott Pelley interviews Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Kryvyi Rih, his hometown, where last week nine children were killed on a playground in a missile attack. They discuss U.S. support for Ukraine, the state of the war, and the Oval Office dust up with the Trump administration. Until President Donald Trump expressed interest in acquiring Greenland, the Danish-controlled territory had long been overlooked. Now, the world's largest island, home to a majority Indigenous Inuit population of 57,000 residents, has suddenly become a reluctant focal point in global geopolitics. Correspondent Jon Wertheim bundles up to explore the rich history and breathtaking landscapes of a bitingly cold region that has found itself at the center of a rapidly evolving hotspot. Something unusual is going on in Major League Baseball stadiums across the country this season, and it isn't traditional baseball. Correspondent Lesley Stahl reports from Savannah, Georgia on the dancing, back-flipping, lip-syncing almost-baseball team, the Savannah Bananas. They've created a new twist on the sport, which they call Banana Ball. Among its rules: a 2-hour time limit; no bunting, walks, or mound visits; and if a fan catches a foul ball, it's an out. Stahl meets Banana Ball's unorthodox, yellow-clad founder, Jesse Cole, and discovers the electric, circus-meets-sporting-event atmosphere that is selling out ballparks. We are excited to have the legendary Jesse Cole joining us today! In today's episode, Jesse shares the incredible story behind how he and his wife, Emily, started the famous Savannah Bananas! He also gets into where they are today and how he leverages the Savannah Bananas for his projects! We hope you enjoy listening to today's super-motivating conversation with Jesse Cole! Bio: Jesse Cole is the founder of Fans First Entertainment and the owner of the Savannah Bananas. He's a fanatic about fandom and launched the Savannah Bananas with one mission: to spark a fan-focused movement. Whether at the ballpark, on social media, onstage delivering keynotes, in features for ESPN and Entrepreneur, or in his first book, Find Your Yellow Tux, Jesse continues to create fans all over the world. The Bananas have sold out every game since their first season and have a waitlist for tickets in the thousands. They have entertained millions of fans in Savannah and at ballparks all over their country on their Banana Ball Tour. Jesse is the proud inventor of Banana Ball and Dolce & Banana underwear and a not-so-proud promoter of the Human Horse Race and Flatulence Fun Night. He's a raving fan of his wife, Emily, his kids, and peerless promoters like Walt Disney, PT Barnum, and Bill Veeck. Jesse owns seven yellow tuxedos. Jesse's story Jesse was raised by his dad, who spent hours playing baseball with him and taught him the value of putting in the effort to create something special! Jesse played baseball throughout his life. After getting into the baseball industry about fifteen years ago, he tore his shoulder, and his baseball career ended. So, he started working in the front office and began his journey to where he is today. Savannah Bananas Before starting the Savannah Bananas, Jesse spent ten years with the team in Gastonia, North Carolina. He became their GM when he was twenty-three and had to figure out how to make people excited about going to a baseball game. It was much harder than he anticipated, so he tried doing some crazy things! Then, seven years ago, Jesse and his wife moved to Savannah, Georgia, and had the opportunity to take on an old and historic stadium. Jesse was not successful in selling the way everyone else did because no one took him seriously. So he tried something new. A vision Everything we accomplish in life starts with a vision. Especially in business! Going into Savannah, Jesse and his wife truly believed they could change baseball games, make them fun, and create something people had never seen before! It was tough at first, but they knew their idea would work. Fans first Many companies focus solely on chasing customers. However, early on, Jesse and his wife became obsessed with creating fans and decided to focus on putting their fans first. So they named their company Fans First Entertainment. All-inclusive tickets They decided to make every ticket all-inclusive so that if the game was terrible, the fans would still get some value for their money because everything, including the food, was included. Spicing things up They decided to spice things up and go all-in on creating an entertaining experience. They hired a dancing coach and choreographed dances for the players. They introduced a banana baby that they lifted, celebrated, and sang to at the start of the match. They even handed out roses to little girls in the middle of the game! No more marketing After that, they no longer had to do any marketing. They just shared what they were doing, and people told others about it! ESPN ESPN became aware of what they were doing. So they wrote an article about the Savannah Bananas, which did very well. Then their sports center did a feature on them, which also did very well. Then, Jesse and his wife approached ESPN with an idea they had for a show, and they agreed. The show was highly rated (and still does well today) and led to even bigger things! Making baseball more fun Leaning in on making baseball more fun, offering non-stop entertainment, storytelling, creating memorable moments for fans, and building an idea culture helped them get to where they are today! No more normal Doing normal things gets normal results. So they work from the premise of doing the exact opposite of whatever would be deemed normal. What if Asking what if and trying out new things motivates them to keep finding new and exciting ways to entertain their fans. Secondary ticket sellers Jesse always refused to sell tickets to secondary marketing groups. One group even offered to pay twice the ticket value and buy more than a million dollars worth of tickets. But Jesse refused because that would inflate ticket prices, and hurting their fans goes against everything they stand for. Living the dream Jesse's dream for the future is to continue chasing the energy they created, making people happy, and dancing in front of fans all over the world! Surrounding yourself with good people When you share your vision, what you stand for, and what you hope to accomplish, you will attract the best people to work for you! Suite Spot host, Ryan Embree, breaks down the key takeaways from the 2025 Hunter Hotel Investment Conference, which took place in Atlanta, Georgia, from March 17-19. This prestigious annual industry event provided valuable insights, numerous panels, and notable speakers from all across the hotel industry. Learn what critical factors are shaping hospitality in 2025 and beyond by tuning in now. Ryan Embree: Welcome to Suite Spot, where hoteliers check in, and we check out what's trending in hotel marketing. I'm your host, Ryan Embree. Hello everyone. Welcome to another episode of The Suite Spot. This is your host, Ryan Embree, fresh off our trip of covering the 36 Hunter Hotel Investment Conference. So excited to be, first of all, covering the event. It was an incredible couple days up in Atlanta, Georgia. Some exciting announcements, which we're gonna talk about that on this podcast. Some industry trends, insights, interviews. We brought it all to you. We came jam packed back with content, and really excited to share some of the key takeaways and issues that were raised. You know, we've talked about this before on the podcast. Love attending these events where we get all types of brands, owners, developers, hotel owners, individual GMs at these events, because all the ideas, topics, really important topics in our industry really float to the top. And, you know, you get a really fresh perspective about how everything, how everyone's feeling about our industry and this year maybe a little bit darker clouds than we hear in your years past, but also just how amazing our industry is. And, and, you know, I'm gonna start with my first takeaway. The theme, we talked about it on the episode with Sarah Moss, was Elevate your game. Love some of the programming that was involved. Molly Bloom, the poker princess who ran high stake poker games. The theme was incredible. Jesse Cole of the Savannah Bananas, everybody was wearing jerseys. He'd certainly brought the energy. If you've, if you've ever seen one of those games, there's a wait list now for a, a long amount of time to try to get tickets to those. But I think the, you know, there were, there were some receptions all around that, you know, gaming style and theme. But really, you know, my takeaway was that we're at a place where hotels really have to elevate their game too, and we're seeing it which is the really, really cool part. Hotels are getting creative with their f and b experiences, right? Utilizing different things sourcing because the cost has risen, the operational costs, the margins are becoming very thin for hoteliers right now. Whether it's the price of, of goods, whether it's the prices of wages right now hoteliers are elevating their game to get creative. They're getting creative to get deals done right? And it's events like Hunter and these investment conferences where you're in the room, so to speak, shaking hands, that really can be the difference between a deal getting over the finish line and not certainly a lot of talk about AI technology. You know, looking back on last year's takeaways and reading and, and listening to kind of some of my thoughts, I felt like we're in a much more comfortable place than we were a year ago. I still think our industry is still trying to figure out the best way to use ai, but I think what's happened is now our grand illusions of the transformation that AI can bring to our business, the expectations of those have maybe been just reeled in a little bit. And we're starting to take those baby steps in AI technology, and we're looking for things like operational efficiency to empower our employees, and even AI used by guests and travelers are becoming more frequent and prevalent. And really what that speaks to is the importance of a IO, right? And the what type of content about your hotel is out there. That's why UGC user generated content is so critical. It's so important because travelers are using this information on othe...
Meet Jesse Cole, the Walt Disney of baseball. In 2016, Jesse and his family took a chance on a struggling baseball team in Savannah. What happened next? The Banana's asked one fundamental question to revive a defunct minor ball team. What do fans hate about going to a game? Dave Young: Welcome to the Empire Builders podcast, teaching business owners the not-so-secret techniques that took famous businesses from mom and pop to major brands. Stephen Semple is a marketing consultant, story collector, and storyteller. I'm Stephen's sidekick in business partner Dave Young. Before we get into today's episode, a word from our sponsor, which is, well, it's us, but we're highlighting ads we've written and produced for our clients, so here's one of those. [ASAP Commercial Doors Ad] Dave Young: Welcome back to the Empire Builders podcast. Dave Young here alongside Stephen Semple, and as you know, this is the time when we usually have Stephen whisper the topic of the podcast into my ear. But today I'm turning the table, Stephen. Stephen Semple: You are? Dave Young: Uh-huh. We're going to talk about one that I'm sort of interested in right now. Stephen Semple: Yeah, and I'm excited. Dave Young: I did tell you what it was. I mean, honestly, I will admit I told you what it was before. Stephen Semple: Well, we had a conversation last time I was in Austin and you mentioned this business, and I started doing a little bit of looking into it and I thought, "Wow, we should talk about this." But since you had already had a lot of knowledge on it, I was like, "Dave, we should talk about this." Dave Young: I mean, cool, huh? Stephen Semple: Yeah, Dave Young: It's really kind of interesting. Stephen Semple: So let everybody know what we're talking about. Dave Young: We're talking about baseball, sort of. Sort of baseball. It's a new form of baseball called Banana Ball. Stephen Semple: Just before you had told me about it, I'd heard about someone else had mentioned it to me and I thought it was pretty fascinating. But give us a background on Banana Ball. Dave Young: So this guy named Jesse Cole and his wife buy this summer baseball league team in Savannah, Georgia that had gone belly up, I think before maybe they were called the Sand Gnats or something like that. Stephen Semple: Okay, so basically it was a defunct, bankrupt out of business junior baseball team. Dave Young: I think the kind of league that plays summer times with college kids. Stephen Semple: Right. Dave Young: So it came with the stadium, right? Stephen Semple: Okay. Dave Young: Whoever owns the franchise gets use of the stadium. So they spent a couple of years just trying to figure out how to make baseball more interesting. Stephen Semple: Right. Dave Young: Here you've got this weird little baseball team that nobody's been able to make succeed. Stephen Semple: Okay, before you go any deeper, Dave, how sold out are they? Dave Young: Dude for the 2025 season, they've got more than a million people on their waiting list. Stephen Semple: On their waiting list. Dave Young: These are people that are saying, "Please, please let me buy a ticket." Stephen Semple: Right, right. Think about this. Wouldn't you love to have a baseball team that not only is sold out, you have a million people on the waiting list hoping for tickets. And this is not a major league team. Dave Young: This is in Savannah, Georgia in a stadium that's just basically, it is not even fully surrounding the field. Stephen Semple: I just wanted people to understand the success this team is having. Dave Young: Here's the really cool thing. Their success is not based on wins and losses. Stephen Semple: Right. Dave Young: It's based on entertaining people. This guy understands customer experience to a deep, deep level. And what he was looking at, and he's a baseball player, he coached. Baseball flows in his blood, but he looked at it and he is like,
