Fighting Malaria with Soil Bacteria

One of the main ways of controlling malaria is to reduce mosquito populations through insecticides. But the mosquitoes are developing resistance, making most insecticides less effective. What if the answer lies beneath our feet? Transcript One of the main ways of controlling malaria is to reduce mosquito populations through insecticides. But the mosquitoes are developing resistance, making most insecticides less effective. We need new vector control interventions – what if the answer lies beneath our feet? Researchers from the Dimopoulos Group at the Johns Hopkins Malaria Research Institute have turned to an unexpected source of inspiration—soil. They've produced a natural biopesticide, derived from a type of bacteria found in soil called Chromobacterium. When you deliver this biopesticide through a sugar bait – which lures the mosquitoes to feed on it – it kills the mosquitoes, regardless of their resistance to insecticides. Additionally, at non-lethal doses, Chromobacterium can enhance the effectiveness of other insecticides, acting as a synergist, as well as making mosquitoes incapable of finding a human to feed on. These findings were first demonstrated in the lab, but have now been confirmed in enclosed field trials in Burkina Faso. It's hoped that this naturally-occurring insecticide could support vector control efforts to curb disease transmission. Source Chromobacterium biopesticide overcomes insecticide resistance in malaria vector mosquitoes (Science) About The Podcast The Johns Hopkins Malaria Minute podcast is produced by the Johns Hopkins Malaria Research Institute to highlight impactful malaria research and to share it with the global community.

He wants me to count all the crocodiles in this part of the river as he is throwing a big party and wants to know the exact number of all the animal guests.”“The King, a party!” bellowed the Crocodile. “Tell us what to do.”“You must line up from this side of the river to the other side.”Elated, the Crocodile got all his friends and family. They lined up across the river.Children, how do you think the mouse deer will count all the crocodiles?Well, the Mouse Deer jumped onto Crocodile's back. “One.”He jumped onto the next crocodile. “Two.”And the next. “Three.”Mouse Deer kept jumping till he jumped off on the other side of the river.“How many are there?” called out the Crocodile.“Just enough!” said Mouse Deer. “And all are silly!”Once again The Mouse Deer Tricked another animal bigger than him! Then he went off singing his songI am quick and smart as I can be.Try and try, but you can't catch me.

Beyond Retirement

TRANSCRIPT: One of the first things we talked about was communication in relationships and something Leah said really hit home – she said a lot of people have trouble getting along with others in their various relationships, and something that we all should keep in mind is that in all our relationships, WE are the common denominator! So, if I'm struggling to get along with my reading club friends and then I go off to the Legion and join my euchre-playing friends and I have disagreements with them too, it might be a good idea for me to step back for a moment and figure out what I'm doing in these relationships. Since I'm the one that's having the issues in all of them, maybe I need to do something different. We went on to discuss the difficulty that many people have with figuring out who they are after they retire. We truly spend all our life identifying with what we do. From the time you're about 4 years old, people are asking “What do you want to be when you grow up?” and we're searching our minds and looking outward as well, trying to pick the “right” character, the one that will make our dreams become reality. And as we get older, the first thing we're asked when we meet someone (and the first thing WE ask) is “So, what do you do?” That's where this whole identity issue after retirement comes from, right? The important thing to learn and to really believe is that you don't HAVE to do anything once you retire. Just being YOU is enough! And if you volunteer locally, if you mentor students at a local school, if you knit socks and mittens for care packages... those are all wonderful things that you do because you're YOU. One of the most important points Leah made was around this aspect – social standing has been an issue forever – when you say you're a lawyer and the person beside you says she's a stay-at-home Mom, there's no denying the difference in the conversations and actions of the people around you. If you're lucky, it's a subtle thing, but often it's quite obvious and we perpetuate it ourselves when we worry about trying to identify ourselves in those terms. As a retiree, it's really important to remember – no, not just remember, but ACCEPT, that everything you've learned over the course of your life has made you who you are. It's not just the job that you did or the profession you were part of. For your working life, you were IN service to the company or organization and the people that made up that select group. Now that you're retired, you get to be OF service to society in general. Your skills, training and experience didn't just evaporate because you aren't employed by the company any longer. So now it's time to identify the skill set you've got. Remember that your skill set goes beyond what your job description said. Do you think everyone starting out in your field has the experience and skills that you possess? They absolutely don't! So here's a chance for you to be OF service... you could offer your assistance to new employees through a mentorship course/program. Or maybe you could start a blog about whatever it is you've done through your life, sharing the wisdom you've developed and the experiences you've had. When Leah mentioned this idea – a blog or a YouTube channel – I'll admit I got a little shiver of nervousness. Putting myself out there and trying to tell people about something? Yikes! That takes a lot of courage, right? That's what I thought, but you know what? It really doesn't take much courage at all...three or four seconds of insane courage is all it takes to do anything outside your comfort zone. One of the examples we discussed was the idea that if you were a doctor, you could give value to others by something as simple as telling people how to prepare for a visit to their general practitioner. These days, everyone is so overworked and short on time, having a patient come into the doctor's office prepared for the visit would be a godsend to the doctor, wouldn't it? And don't you...

Addressing an unseen audience is a whole new ballgame. What can you do to maintain contact? TRANSCRIPT: One of the most unnerving talks I‘ve ever had to give came only recently. I'd been asked to address a group of about 300 people as guest speaker at a forum. However, weeks before the event Covid hit and the face-to-face talk became a video conference. So instead of a sea of faces I only had a camera and a small video crew in front of me. I'm used to getting feedback from the audience seeing and hearing them reacting to my talk and adjusting accordingly, but this time…. nothing. It begs the question, how to connect with people when you're getting absolutely no feedback, it's a question I've already been asked as a public speaking coach. In this Covid era this is a question many speakers are going to have to face. So what do you need to do? Well you need to relate to the camera and a whole new way and treat it as your friend. Budding radio presenters are often told to take the microphone as the one and only person speaking to. So the audience out there feel its only them you're speaking to. Even when you're speaking to 300 people your address should be personal and directed so each member of the audience thinks the talk is just for them. So in this virtual audience talk to the camera as if it is the centre of your universe. Speak to the camera like it is someone you know and respect. Speak to it like a friend. In a typical audience to speaker situation if your doing it right you can feel the warmth bouncing back at you . Talking to a virtual audience you'll have to make your delivery more personal, instead of something like “There are three major challenges facing society today they are …etc etc .To a virtual audience make it more inclusive, ask for their help. “So what do you see as the major challenges facing society today?” “I think there are three and I'd like to share them with you.” They can't answer of course but it's a great way to show the audience that you're talk is about them, not about you. By generating a feeling of inclusion and using inclusive language you'll be recreating the shared experience that's removed when you're not speaking live in front of the audience. It's a necessary strategy when you lack all physical contact or even the ability to see the people you're talking to. Remember they are seeing you on a screen, close-up,any quirky mannerisms or jerky movements will be obvious and they'll be annoying. Delivering your talk to a camera won't be a spontaneous thing for you so you need plenty of practice. Video your sessions and play them back and then re-do them. Work on generating warmth and energy and eliminating any annoying gestures. Speaking to a large audience down the barrel of the camera lens is not the ideal way to give a talk but with Covid with us for the foreseeable future everyone called on to address a video conference needs to learn how to master this brave new world of public speaking . Do it well and you'll be much in demand

When it comes to our inner awareness, we are a creature that is born to grow. We can't help it. It's a critical part of our nature. A quick look at our process of inner growth is presented, along with the power that comes from nurturing the higher sides of our intelligence. Profound insights from Carl Jung, Albert Einstein, Buddha, and Abraham Lincoln add elements of genius to the practical information.   Transcript:           One of the best things we can do for ourselves is to become more aware of our own Inner Awareness. Inner Awareness is just a term that refers to our consciousness, which carries the unique combination of our thoughts, feelings and emotions, along with our higher intuition as well as our connection to the universal power that gives us life.           Now, that's a lot of words, but to put it simply, our inner awareness is our actual identity. It's beyond just our identifications with our various roles, father, mother, husband, wife, teacher, doctor, and so on.  It's our inner essence, the very root of our intelligence, and we had it before we had even had a name.           But, it's more than just that, it's also a reflection of the larger level of growth that we have achieved so far in our lives. As one anonymous quote puts it, “At any given moment, you are all that you've learned about God.”           Because this is the central core of our being, and because our being always comes before our doing. it has a major impact on every aspect of our lives.  And on top of that, it has an extraordinary capacity to grow.           Now, we're all familiar with growth. One way or another, we've been doing all our lives. Usually, we barely notice it when it's happening until it reaches a certain point. Like when you were young, you had no idea that your feet were growing until one day, when you went to put on your favorite shoes, to your amazement, they didn't fit you anymore. You tried to put them on, but they were too tight. And no matter how much you still wanted to wear them, you had simply outgrown them you just had to let them go.              Our inner growth is similar. We go through certain stages of inner maturity. Each stage has its own particular set of understandings and concepts. We live in them for a while, with our likes and dislikes, and then, at some point, we outgrow them and move on. As it says in the bible, “When I was a child, I talked like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. But, when I became a man, I put childish ways behind me.”           And once we've grown past them and we look back on ourselves, we're often amazed at what we see. It can be hard to relate to what you used to be like and sometimes you can barely recognize who you were.           So, how important is the growth of our Inner Awareness? Well, sources from ancient wisdom all the way through to modern science, tell us that its growth is absolutely critical to us as human beings. It has a profound effect on our clarity of vision, empowering our ability to make sound choices. And as the old adage goes, its choice, not chance, that creates our destiny.                 Naturally, it also has a tremendous effect on our problem-solving abilities, which is key because, as most of us know all too well, most adults spend most of their adult years trying to solve their problems. And it turns out that a lot of these problems just can't be solved until our inner awareness grows into a higher level. Then it all changes.           Albert Einstein and Carl Jung each offered some great insight on this.  Einstein said, “No problem can be solved from the same level of consciousness that created it.” And according to Jung, “The greatest and most important problems in life are all, in a certain sense, insoluble. They can never be solved, only outgrown.”           So, the information seems to be that as we emerge into higher and deeper levels of inner understanding, we'll be able to see our existence in a different light and face our challenges with a whole new set of tools.           It's actually a pretty cool idea. Like you've been holed up in a broken-down shack for years, and rather than having to spend the rest your life trying to fix it up as it keeps falling apart, you realize that you can just move out, into a beautiful new home, designed and built just for you. And in a much nicer neighborhood as well.             Sounds attractive, but what's the catch? Who knows? Maybe expanding our consciousness is a tall order. Maybe it's a complicated, tedious task, filled with hours of frustrating, hard work and probably doomed to failure anyway.           Well, maybe. But maybe not. Let's take a quick look at Neurology, which tells us that a fundamental part of our learning process is simply repetition. We're all familiar with it. If you really want to get good at something, you have to do it a lot. You need to practice. On a biological level, it has to do with the way our neurons fire and create neural pathways. And in that process, repetition is the key. So, one of the most basic laws of consciousness is – you get what you reinforce.           Maybe by shifting our awareness in a certain way and paying attention to what we repeat and what we don't repeat, what we reinforce and what we release, we can naturally empower our own inner growth turning it into a much easier, more pleasant experience.           It's like you're rowing a boat on a journey and you still have a long way to go. Unexpectedly, you come upon a strong current in the water that happens to be going exactly in the direction you want to go. You row your way into it and suddenly, everything magically transforms. Instead of the constant struggle of rowing upstream, against the opposition of a powerful, unrelenting force, you soon find yourself enjoying the journey.           Sure, you still have work to do. You have to pay attention and keep the boat on course. And definitely don't fall out. But you're travelling with the current now and it's a completely different trip! You're moving much faster, as the current adds power to your efforts, enhancing your results. And even when you stop rowing, you're still moving, gliding downstream as the current brings you closer and closer to your destination. You can relax into it, and it's actually fun!           So how can you bring about this kind of positive change to your inner growth? Well, like everything else in nature, how well it grows depends on the kind of light it gets.           Buddha had an interesting take on it. One day, as he was teaching, someone asked him, “How is it that you are enlightened?” The question might also have been, “How did you become enlightened?” or “How do you stay enlightened.?” As with all these very old stories, you can never know what really got said.           Anyway, Buddha gave a simple, but incredibly instructive answer. “I know that which should be known,” he said. “That which should be cultivated, I nurture. That which should be abandoned, I release.” Then he concluded, “In this way, Oh, my friend, I am awake.”           For me, that opening statement, “I know that which should be known.” always brings me back to basics. I have to ask myself, what's he talking about? What is it that should be known? Now I know a lot of things. In fact, I probably know a zillion things – I know which deli near me has the best rye bread. I know how far I can get on half a tank of gas in my car. I know which golf club I should use if I'm in a sand trap with hard sand.  And on and on, ad nauseum.           But I doubt Buddha was referring to any of these kinds of things when he said, “I know that which should be known.”  Given his reputation, he probably meant something like, - “I know that I am not alive by my own power, but by a compassionate force that is beyond my comprehension and I'm grateful to it.” Or, “I know that all life is impermanent, that I have only so much time here and it can end at any instant, so I must use my time wisely.”  Or, “I know there is a state of enlightenment filled with heavenly bliss within my being, and rather than chasing the ordinary desires of my ordinary mind, I can access it whenever if I choose.” Or all of the above. Who knows? Your guess is as good as mine.           But then, his answer gets incredibly simple. He feels that there are parts within him that should be cultivated – the higher stuff like love, goodwill, intelligence, understanding, and so on. And he nurtures all of them. He gives them his attention and care, and they grow. And then, there are other things within him that he feels should be abandoned, probably the bitter stuff like anger, lust for power, deluded self-aggrandizement, spite and malice and all their mean accomplices. And when he comes upon those things, he just releases them. He gives them no energy or attention at all. He just lets them go. And those seeds never get planted, they just get blown away, so they never sprout or grow.              Then for me, as powerful as all this is, the last part of his answer remains intriguingly beyond my grasp. He says, “In this way, Oh, my friend, I am awake.” Now he had been asked about being enlightened, but he responded by saying that he is awake. Wow. Sounds like he was equating the state of being enlightened with the state of being awake.             Now, in many of the traditions of ancient wisdom there is a teaching that this life is very similar to a dream. And in a dreamlike state, with our heads full of ideas, concepts and fantasies, we grope our way through our existence, wandering from one illusion to another.           And then, within the teaching, a powerful question is asked. If this life, with all its magnificent beauty and its unending depth of meaning is just a dream, what must it be like to be awake? Boy, I wish I had the answer to that one.           Well, again, these podcasts are just snack-sized food for thought, ideas for you to consider. One simple thing you may want to try is to gently turn your attention within and watch what happens. As different things come up, just see if it would be a good idea to nurture, cultivate and keep them, or maybe it's better just to let them go.             Supposedly we each have both light and dark sides within us. The cartoons always show us with an angel on one shoulder and a devil on the other, both giving us constant advice. Things can get mixed up and sometimes it gets complicated. So how can you tell the difference between what to keep and what to release?           Abraham Lincoln had an interesting viewpoint related to this. When he was president, it was well-known that he didn't belong to any church and had no official religion. Once, when he was asked about it, as was his genius, he gave the simplest answer imaginable. “When I do good, I feel good. When I do bad, I feel bad. And that's my religion.” In my humble view, you can take that one to the bank.             Well, that's it for now. I hope you enjoyed this podcast, and as always, keep your eyes, mind and heart opened and let's get together again in the next episode!

I am the Vocab man and hopefully, we are going to learn a bunch of things. Alluding to (referring to) a quote from a Lord of the rings movie. 00:34 One does not simply is the catch phrase of popular memes that comment on humerous complex, challenging or aggravating (annoying, provoking) experiences or situations.0:46 One does not put sugar in green tea. I know I said I'm aware of this custom, but I really liked my tea. Sweet in response. He gave me an even more courteous (polite, respectful) version of the same explanation. One does not put sugar in green tea. I understand. I said that the Japanese do not put sugar in their green tea, but I'd like to put some sugar in my green tea. 1:14One does not listen to the Vocab Man without learning something. Do you know what alluding or to allude (to refer to) means? I mentioned it in the beginning of the podcast: 1:28Alluding to a quote from a Lord of the rings movie (= flick) .One does not simply is the catchphrase of popular memes (an image, video, piece of text, etc., typically humorous in nature, that is copied and spread rapidly by internet users, often with slight variations) for to allude is to refer to, or to imply or to mention. And. The other word was "catchphrase". I catch phrase is a well-known sentence or phrase, especially one that is associated (connected with something else) with a particular famous person. 1:59One does not use fitting room two when one is popping one's cherry. (Quote from Kingsman) Again, this time I'm going to make a transcript for this episode. So for those who didn't catch every word, you can simply read along while listening to the Vocab Man. Bye.2:18I don't know how things are in that third rate novel of yours, but where I come from, one does not go around ravaging (to cause severe and extensive damage) libraries. (Quote from Inkheart 2008)And by the way to ravage means something like to cause severe and extensive damage to like the hurricane ravaged southern, Florida. Oh my gosh. 23. The Big Bang, Inflation, and General Cosmology 2

Transcript: One of the very difficult things to explain in standard cosmology is the flatness of space. Remember that the early universe was small and dense, and space-time was actually curved and knotted in the quantum era so the current flatness of space is an unusual condition. In standard cosmologies with no vacuum energy, flat space corresponds to a critical energy density, and in the expansion dynamics of the universe it’s an equal amount of energy in kinetic energy of the expansion and in the potential energy of all the gravity in the universe. The best analogy for this strange situation is to imagine throwing something up into the air. If you give it some particular random speed it’s likely to fall back down to your feet, but if you give it the very special velocity of the escape velocity, the object will just leave the gravity of the Earth. If you give it much larger than the escape velocity, the object will sail off into space and travel forever. The universe itself is poised between re-collapse and endless expansion. The flat space condition is a very particular condition corresponding to equal amounts of potential and kinetic energy. It’s as if the odds of throwing something up into the air and having it at exactly the escape velocity were very small. The fine tuning of the universe is the closeness of the space-time shape to being flat. The fact that space-time is this close to being flat now means that the initial parameters of the big bang expansion must have been very finely tuned early in the universe.

28. Interstellar Travel, SETI, and the Rarity of Life

Transcript: One of the arguments that we are not alone in the universe and that there are other intelligent civilizations is based on what’s called the timescale consideration. Remember that there has been life of some kind on Earth for about four billion years. But only in the last couple of million years has the human species existed, and only in the past couple of hundred years has technology existed and the possibility for space travel. This is a tiny fraction in the history of the human species and an even tinier fraction of the history of life on Earth or the age of the universe. Thus, if civilizations are eventually developing the capability for space travel and traveling around the galaxy, on average any civilization we might encounter or that might exist will be essentially be infinitely advanced compared to us, that is to say hundreds of thousands or millions of years more advanced than we are. As Arthur C. Clarke, the science fiction writer said, “Any sufficiently advanced civilization is indistinguishable from magic.” So one of the profound issues of thinking about life in the universe is that if we have only just developed the capability for technology and for space travel, and we encounter it elsewhere in the universe, we will be looking at people far more advanced than us.

28. Interstellar Travel, SETI, and the Rarity of Life

Transcript: One of the standard conceits of science fiction is that humans, when they develop the capability for starships and interstellar travel, will meet another set of civilizations with whom we can communicate and share our cultural values and our civilization histories. The truth is that the time scale issue makes such a very unlikely outcome. To illustrate this, consider the evolution of three prototypical Earths. Imagine that the evolution of life and complexity is somehow key to the rate of evolution governed perhaps by the distance to the Sun, which is the energy source. Two identical Earths, one of which evolved at a rate one percent slower than the other, would yield outcomes that after four and a half billion years were forty-five million years different. So on one Earth there would be humans having developed from primates, but on the other Earth it would only be twenty million years after the dinosaurs became extinct and no primates or apes existed. Now imagine the timescale difference was ten percent. After four and a half billion years, one Earth would be the present day Earth, and the other would be four hundred and fifty million years previous. That's a time when the oceans had only just begun to contain complex life. Dinosaurs, mammals did not exist, nor birds, an utterly different world. And if the timescale was thirty percent different, not a huge percentage difference, one Earth would be like the present day Earth, and the other Earth would not even contain multicelled organisms. It would be utterly different and alien from our world, and yet it is the same world just different in time by only thirty percent. This gives us a sense with our own planet of the vastly different outcomes that could happen as cosmic time unfolds and evolution plays its role.

Transcript: One of the most profound discoveries in astronomy in the past few decades has been the fact that most galaxies have most of their mass in the form of dark matter which is to say material that does not shine in any part of the electromagnetic spectrum, so it cannot be composed of normal stars or even sub-stellar objects or gas and dust. Dark matter is ubiquitous in galaxies. Its presence is indicated by rotation curves for spiral galaxies and velocity dispersion measurements in elliptical galaxies. Every type of galaxies that we’ve studied, including dwarfs and irregulars, are dominated by dark matter. Most of the mass of the universe is in the form of this material whose fundamental nature is still mysterious but is almost certainly in the form of microscopic, subatomic particles.

Transcript: One of the best distance indicators for elliptical galaxies is the Faber-Jackson relation, named after the two astronomers who discovered it. The Faber-Jackson relation relates the range of stellar velocities or their velocity dispersion in the nucleus in an elliptical galaxy with the size of the galaxy. The width of the stellar absorption features from a spectrum of the elliptical galaxy is used to give the velocity dispersion, and the size of the galaxy comes from an image. Astronomers must be careful to measure the size of galaxies always at a same fixed percentage of their total brightness since galaxies do not have sharp edges. The velocity dispersion is an indicator of mass which in turn relates to luminosity. Ellipticals are old stellar populations which behave in a relatively simple way, and this is the physical basis for the Faber-Jackson relation. Unfortunately, they have no Cepheid variables, so this technique can not calibrated with a local distance scale.

Conservation of Energy

4. Chemistry and Physics

Play Episode Listen Later Jul 13, 2011 1:32

Transcript: One of the most important principles in physics is the law of conservation of energy. Energy can be neither created nor destroyed. In any closed physical system the total amount of energy is constant, although the energy may change forms multiple times. What do we mean by a closed system? We mean drawing an imaginary box around either an atom or an object or a planet such that all the processes occur within the box. Energy is conserved, but it can change forms. In an elliptical orbit, the kinetic energy changes constantly across the orbit, and the potential energy changes too. But the sum is constant. There are many examples of the transfer and change of one form of energy to another, but in every case, when the sums are done carefully, the total is conserved. In cases where it does not appear to be conserved the energy usually emerges in a subtle form. When a ball rolls and comes to a halt, or a pendulum swings and comes to a halt, it seems as if the energy of motion, the kinetic energy, has disappeared. But in each case the energy of motion has been replaced by thermal energy. For the rolling ball, the frictional energy increases the temperature of the surface due to the rubbing of atoms against each other, in the case of the pendulum, an increase in the microscopic motion of the air particles.

3. Concepts and History of Astronomy and Physics

Transcript: One of the things Newton is famous for is his understanding of the laws of mechanics and his development of three laws of motion. The first law is that an object continues in its present state of motion unless acted on by an external force. This is the concept of inertia. The second law is that an object is accelerated when an unbalanced force is applied to it, with acceleration proportional to the force and inversely proportional to the mass: F equals M A. The final law is for every force or action there is an equal and opposite force, reaction. These laws of motion are the basis of our understanding of how objects move on the Earth and how objects move in space.

1. Fundamentals of Science and Astronomy

Transcript: One idea that does not fit neatly into theories of the scientific method is the idea of aesthetics. Science does have aesthetics in its theorizing. In the modern scientific method aesthetics usually apply to the mathematical description of nature. So when we talk about aesthetics in physics or astronomy we’re talking about principles of conservation, the conservation of charge, conservation of quantum number, conservation of energy, or of symmetry; the symmetry between matter and antimatter, between time flowing backward and time flowing forward. In the 1930s beta decay seemed to provide a violation of the cherished law of the conservation of energy. Pauli hypothesized an unseen, uncharged, undetected particle called the neutrino to preserve this symmetry principle. Thirty years later the neutrino was discovered. Heisenberg solved the equations of quantum mechanics and came up with two equal and opposite solutions. One corresponding to normal matter, the other to a form of matter with the opposite quantum properties, we call it antimatter. Four years later the positron was discovered. The idea of symmetry and aesthetics in science has a powerful place in our understanding of the natural world.

Church Militant The Vortex Feed

TRANSCRIPT One of the glories of the Catholic faith is its pure simplicity and its simple purity. And this is all that is required of us: purity of heart and a single-minded desire for Heaven. Purity and simplicity share in common with each other the notion of clarity. Everything we need to know in the Catholic Church is very clear. Purity and simplicity are bound together with clarity. For example, the teaching on the Blessed Sacrament, the Real Presence, is just that. Jesus Christ is really, truly and substantially present — body, blood, soul and divinity — under the appearance of bread and wine. Simple does not mean not deep. But it does mean clear. You can't get much more straightforward than that. And don't make the mistake of thinking that just because something is cloaked in mystery, it isn't clear. The "how" or "why" or even the "what" of something doesn't detract from its simplicity or purity. The Host, which looks and tastes like bread, is Jesus Christ, pure and simple. So too is the Church's teaching that if a person is to be saved, then he must not die in a state of mortal sin. He must die in a state of grace, meaning, sanctifying grace, having the Holy Trinity living and abiding in him. Everything we need to know in the Catholic Church is very clear. This, too, is a pure and simple teaching. Depart from this life without the indwelling of the Holy Trinity, and a person remains in that state forever, without end — this is Hell. At death, the soul experiences an illumination of reality, of the truth that what really mattered was its condition before God. God does not know a soul without Himself present in that soul at the moment of death. He Himself attests to this in the gospels when He says, quite clearly, to those knocking on the door to get in, "Go away, I tell you. I do not know you." God is life. A person that dies in mortal sin has a soul without life, the requisite spirituality of the Holy Trinity. If one dies in that state, then his soul is forever sealed in that state. It's like a team losing a game because it has fewer points than its opponent when the final gun sounds. That loss is forever sealed, locked and unchangeable. The competition is unrepeatable. The loss stands forever as a sign of failure to achieve the goal of victory. So many people struggle with the concept of eternal damnation, but salvation and damnation are pure and simple concepts. It's a very simple and pure concept, and it's extremely straightforward. Reject God and His loving commandments in this life and a person is forever sealed in that condition of rejection of God. Likewise, if one lives a life of desire to cling to God in this life by following the commandments of love, then that choice is ratified for eternity. The Son of God commanded that a person be baptized and eat His Body and drink His Blood. He then underscored that if you don't do this, then you have no life within you. So how could a soul that departs this life without the life of God suddenly attain the life of God after death? The time for choosing is this side of death, not the next. It's pure and simple. A soul must depart this life in a state of grace, with the life of God within. And the surest means to do that is as a baptized receiver of Holy Communion, who has no conscious knowledge of mortal sin on his soul. Everything else for a rational, non-invincibly ignorant person is a gamble in the extreme and, more than likely, a losing proposition. The line from the psalms is most instructive here: "Deep is calling on deep." When we stand before Almighty God, what He will search us for is the image of Himself. To the degree that we image Him, then deep calls on deep, and deep responds and goes to deep — like things to like things. But when God calls out to the soul before Him at the judgment and that soul is spiritually dead — in a state of deadly sin — then there is nothing deep within that soul to respond. Here, we have two things that are not alike, and, as such, the soul with death flees from the God of life and prefers the torments of eternal loss to the even greater torments of being in a state of constant death surrounded by life. This is why the Church's members and leaders must never retreat from the truth — from its purity, simplicity and clarity. The Faith is simple because it flows from and back to God, Who is simple in Himself. The Faith is pure because God is one. The Faith is blinding in its clarity because so is God. Church Militant is committed to presenting the teachings of the Church and teaching them in a clear, decisive, irrefutable and, of course, easily understood fashion. The truths of the holy Catholic faith must be intellectually accessible to everyone at all times. So we'd like to ask you to become a Premium member today. It's just $10 a month. That's less than almost everyone spends on a cup of coffee in a week. In the face of the colossal failure on the part of Church leaders, the laity must step up and take responsibility for their own spiritual welfare. It's why we produced 13 episodes of our program Fr. Pablo Says. It's straight talk about the Church from a very well-known priest that Mother Angelica considered near and dear to her heart. The Faith is simple because it flows from and back to God, Who is simple in Himself. Likewise, we produced 26 episodes of a show everyone loved, The Majesty of the Faith. They were produced specifically to be short, single-minded episodes, easily understood. And, in this same vein, we produced a really good show with Fr. Louis Guardiola of the Fathers of Mercy, Losing My Religion, on the necessity of Catholicism for salvation. All this week (the last week of the summer) we are going to be highlighting the treasure trove that is the Premium channel of Church Militant. It's 100% faithful to the Magisterium, easily understood, and, most importantly, it reveals aspects of Church teaching you've likely never heard before. The spiritual war the world is involved in right now demands that Catholics know the Faith down cold. Becoming Premium is a fantastic way to begin. Again, please just click on the link and sign up today for your monthly Premium subscription. Our call is to conform to God in the way He commands us, pure and simple.
