The fear of losing the faith to another culture is producing the very thing it fears. Dr. James Spencer and Dr. Ashish Varma open a series on three forces pressing on the church, beginning with assimilation, and Varma's argument is that syncretism functions mostly as a fear discourse. The word gets aimed outward, at newer expressions of Christian faith in other places, by people whose own expression is so culturally saturated that they have stopped noticing it. He points out that "essence," the thing we say we are protecting, is a Greek philosophical category rather than a biblical one. His illustration is an apple. American students arriving in Germany recognize the fruit and still find it strange, because the apple in their heads is large, waxed, and unblemished, and a German student had the same reaction in reverse. The dandelion has a flower and we call it a weed. Every category came from somewhere. Spencer supplies the Old Testament counterweight: what scholars call syncretism there is specific and it is always about Yahweh. Israel does not swap gods so much as limit the one they have, keeping him for agriculture and hiring another for war, and the distortion becomes a denial. That distinction lets the conversation move without collapsing. Acts 2 puts the gospel into every dialect at once, and Acts 15 declines to make Gentiles into Jews. Varma, whose family is Indian, describes a mission history in which merchant, soldier, and missionary arrived together and in which becoming Christian meant becoming less Indian. He asks what an Indian Christian should do with Diwali, a festival about light overcoming darkness in which a god enters a demon's kingdom to rescue his bride, and offers the reception of Christmas in the Roman world as his analogy. His word for the move is not conform but transfigure. Spencer's is relocation under a different authority. Both insist on a constraint: Jesus the Jewish Messiah, which they argue is what makes the openness possible rather than what limits it. This homily reflects on the growing number of people entering the Orthodox Church and argues that, beneath attractions such as ancient worship, community, or cultural concerns, many converts are searching for something profoundly theological: a real encounter with God and the possibility of being transformed by Him. The Feast of the Transfiguration reveals the heart of that longing, as Christ manifests His divine glory on Mount Tabor and shows His disciples both who He truly is and what humanity is called to become through participation in His divine life. Yet the path to that glory cannot bypass Golgotha. Just as the disciples must descend from Tabor and follow Christ toward the Cross, Christians are transfigured through the crucifixion of their passions, perseverance, and faithfulness even when the initial beauty and excitement of the spiritual life fade. The homily ultimately encourages believers not to mistake spiritual dryness for failure, but to continue ascending toward God in hope, trusting that through the Cross He is transforming them into His likeness.

Transfigured is a translation of the Greek word metamorphos from which we get metamorphosis. The Son of God burst through His chrysalis of human flesh and spread His wings of light, pure, glorious light. The darkness fled. The two prophets of old in glory were illuminated even more by Jesus' glory and spoke of His departure.

Luke writes of the transfiguration of Christ while He was praying. In Luke 9:27-36, Dr. Mitchell will state 5 things found in this passage. Here we see, the doctrine of Christ's 2nd coming. We see time - about 8 days after His promise to some of them that would not die till they saw the Son of Man coming in His glory. The test comes from the Lord's holy character. The theme is spoken by Moses and Elijah which was the death, burial, resurrection and ascension of our Lord Jesus.The practical application from the voice of God the Father Himself was, “This is My Chosen One. Because Christ is God the Son sent by the Father and revealed the Spirit, we must give Him our whole attention and follow Him faithfully as Lord and Savior. I. The Declaration by God the Father that this is His Son! v 5 II. The Fear that Fell Upon the Disciples Because of the Presence of God in His Glory v 6 III. The Mediator and the Comfort that Comes When Jesus Draws Near! . vv 7-8

Because Jesus has been confirmed as God the Son who shares in the Father's Glory and Deity, we can and must put all our trust in Him, giving Him our full allegiance as Saving Lord, no matter what happens. Pastor Dru highlights the Transfiguration where Jesus' divine glory shines, fulfilling the Law and the Prophets, and points to his suffering, resurrection, and the indwelling presence of God in believers. He calls us to listen to Jesus and live from his radiance.

But that we may not offend them, go to the sea, drop in a hook, and take the first fish that comes up. Open its mouth and you will find a coin worth twice the temple tax. Give that to them for me and for you.” Matthew 17:25–27Prior to this minor miracle, Jesus had just told His disciples for the second time about His coming passion. Again, this was difficult for them to hear. Recall that after the first prediction of Jesus' coming passion and death, Jesus took Peter, James and John up the mountain and was Transfigured before them. The Transfiguration was meant, in part, to dispel the fear of the disciples and to give them hope for that which was to come. And now, after Jesus' second prediction of His passion, another miracle was performed for Peter, personally, to help encourage him and give him hope.Imagine if you were Peter. Imagine following through with Jesus' instructions by going to the sea, dropping in a hook, pulling out a fish and then opening its mouth. Peter must have been filled with hope and excitement as he pulled this fish in, wondering if Jesus' words would come true. And as soon as Peter saw the coin, just as Jesus said, he must have been in awe. Slowly, the fear and anxiety he was experiencing at this second prediction of Jesus' passion and death would have begun to subside as Peter witnessed yet another incredible sign from his Lord.God performs miracles in our lives every day. The problem is that we often fail to discern them. Any time His glorious power works within us to strengthen us or fills us with courage, hope, charity and every other virtue, this is a miracle of transforming grace. God always knows what we need in life. He knows our struggles and doubts. At times, He is silent so as to draw us deeper through intentional prayer and acts of faith. And at times, we suddenly find that we receive a new clarity in life that is the result of His grace at work.Jesus knew that Peter needed this extra grace of this personal miracle so that he could move beyond his fears and struggles and place all of his trust in Jesus. Jesus was trustworthy. This is the conclusion Peter would have arrived at. He was trustworthy. Therefore, everything He said should be believed. What a wonderful conclusion for us all to arrive at.Reflect, today, upon the ways that God has assured you of His divine presence and action in your life. Though the assuring miracles God has performed in your life may not be physical in their manifestation, God's workings can be just as convincing if we clearly perceive them. What does God want to assure you of in your life? What struggle or doubt do you struggle with? If you struggle, turn your mind to the ways that God has been present and active in your life. Ponder His intervention and the ways He has cared for you and led you. Be grateful and allow the memory of what God has done to be your strength today and the source of hope when you need it the most.My miraculous Lord, Your action in my life is truly glorious and amazing. You never fail to provide for me when I am in need. Help me to turn to You whenever I struggle so as to be filled with new hope in You. You are always faithful, dear Lord.
