Devin & James are back in the Den to start Spooky Season with a 50th anniversary celebration of the HORROR MOVIES OF 1975! We begin by rediscovering the nihilistic classic THE STEPFORD WIVES. Next, we debate if the masterpiece PICNIC AT HANGING ROCK and the underseen THE REINCARNATION OF PETER PROUD are even technically horror movies, or rather films so unique that they defy genre classification. Then we head to the drive-in for the cheestastic THE GIANT SPIDER INVASION. We next examine the taboos of David Cronenberg's disturbing, yet hilarious, SHIVERS. We travel to Spain to explore two bizarre horrors by filmmaker Amando de Ossorio, his final Blind Dead entry, NIGHT OF THE SEAGULLS and the totally unhinged Exorcist "homage" DEMON WITCH CHILD. We round things out with some Satanic Panic in two of the wildest Satanist cult films ever made, the RV road chase nightmare RACE WITH THE DEVIL, starring Peter Fonda and Warren Oates, and THE DEVIL'S RAIN, featuring unhinged performances by William Shatner, Tom Skerrit, John Travolta, and the GOAT, Ernest Borgnine! Roden and Thunder get terrified... not once... not twice... but three times!

As this new year is hurled upon us, Cory decided we need to slow things down a bit with what he calls "stony hang movies," AKA movies that are actually about weed for a change. While we have featured movies with Vincent Price mainlining LSD, we have somehow avoided the subject of cannabis itself in the selection of our films altogether, so Cory curated this double feature from the depths of Tubi and Roku's catalogs. In our first movie, Gene Hackman is a crooked LA cop who forces burnt-out rock star Cisco Pike (Kris Kristofferson) to sell 100 keys of primo weed in just 36 hours in CISCO PIKE from Columbia in 1971. This forgotten gem boasts an amazing cast all the way around with Karen Black (FIVE EASY PIECES, TRILOGY OF TERROR) as Cisco's long-suffering girlfriend and Harry Dean Stanton as Cisco's former bandmate. As Cisco makes his way through amazing and sadly gone Los Angeles locations in his frantic quest to unload these bricks of shake, he runs into counterculture characters played by Roscoe Lee Brown, Viva, Joy Bang (MESSIAH OF EVIL), Antonio Fargas (Huggy Bear from STARSKY AND HUTCH), Severn Darden (BATTLE FOR THE PLANET OF THE APES), and Allan Arbus (M*A*S*H). Don't get too stoned like Philena. Keep it mellow for this one. Streaming on Prime Video and the Roku Channel And then we have the somewhat less lustrous ARNOLD'S WRECKING CO. (1973) where the annoying cousin Arnold makes marijuana into big business in this satire that may be the worst movie we've ever featured on the podcast. We're going to save most of the commentary on this one for the podcast itself, but it's the brainchild of writer/director/star Steven E. de Souza who went on to write the screenplays for DIE HARD (1988) and 48 HOURS (1982). Now streaming on tubi and Pluto. Cory and Philena give their accounts of the Los Angeles fires, and our speculation on what will happen to TikTok is already woefully out-of-date, but we left it in there anyway (it's worse than we imagined folks). Plus Greg finally gives in to the joys of tubi, and we got listener mail from actual listeners! Thanks for reaching out everybody. We talk a little bit about the passing of David Lynch, but we're saving our love for this artist for our tribute episode to him next month where we discuss the short films of his that are on Criterion Channel, and THE WIZARD OF OZ (1939), a film he was so obsessed with that there's an entire documentary about its influence on him. First the heroes of Team 7 bomb the hell out of a sacred Mexican temple because who's even gonna mind? Some sort of vengeful bat demon who lives there? Please! What are the odds of that happening? Next, Gen13 deal with a vengeful bat demon who's super upset about something! Jeez, what's his problem? It's never made clear. Finally, Wetworks stops by to channel the spirit of a Nordic warrior in order to fight some sort of bat-demon-conjuring guy who's really angry for reasons I didn't catch. It should be a great comic, but if it's not, remember: Nobody forced you to listen.
