Glad You Asked
#78: Renée Roden - Can Catholics be anarchists?

Glad You Asked

Play Episode Listen Later Oct 24, 2025 49:46

For many, the term “anarchy” connotes chaos, disorder, even violence. Yet some anarchists are pacifists. And some are even Christian. The earliest Christian communities, some scholars believe, had certain anarchist tendencies, such as making decisions through group consensus, versus top-down hierarchy. Later on, of course, the church became more structured and hierarchical. But those anti-institutional threads of tradition never quite went away. In the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, when the concept of anarchy became formalized, various groups explicitly identifying as Christian anarchists emerged, in Russia, Europe, and the United States. While anarchism might work for less structured Christian groups, like Anabaptists or Quakers, it seems an uncomfortable fit for Catholics, given the church's emphasis on rules and hierarchy. So does this mean that Catholics can't be anarchists? What would Catholic anarchism even look like? On this episode of Glad You Asked, the hosts talk to journalist and Catholic worker Renée Roden about whether Catholics can be anarchists. Roden has written extensively on the Catholic Worker movement, and on economic and labor movements, She is a frequent contributor to U.S. Catholic, as well as to The Nation, Religion News Service, The Associated Press, Washington Post, Commonweal, Sojourners, America, and Notre Dame Magazine. She also writes frequently for catholicworker.org and its newsletter, Roundtable. You can learn more about this topic, and read some of Roden's work, in these links: “Christian anarchism is as old as Christianity itself,” by Renée Roden “The Anarchism of the Catholic Worker,” by Renée Roden “A Short History of Religious Anarchism,” by Kevin Daugherty “Divine revelation leads to revolution,” by Alice Camille

n our conversation with Ridgeline High School volleyball coach Jaicee Roden, one principle came through loud and clear: the athletes who rise to the top are the ones who learn to eliminate distractions.Coach Roden, who has led some of Utah's most competitive volleyball programs, shared how she's seen the mental side of sports evolve in the age of constant connection. “Kids today have bigger battles with social media,” she said. “They're not always sure why they're doing what they're doing anymore.”She pointed to Dr. Craig Manning's book The Fearless Mind and its formula for high performance:Potential + Training – Distractions = Performance.“The elimination of distractions is everything,” Roden explained. “The athletes who can build a better relationship with eliminating distractions are the ones who become elite.”That's a perfect example of the E4A principle Win the Hour — the call to be intentional with our time, to focus on what matters most in the moment, and to do what needs to be done rather than be pulled away by what doesn't.Coach Roden helps her players identify their distractions — from phones and social media to something more subtle, like perfectionism or self-doubt. “We don't realize that our own hyper-criticism can be a distraction,” she said. “Good isn't bad — but good is never great. If we want to be great, we have to rise above good.”Her players use mental performance tools like Dr. Manning's High Performance Journal to stay focused on their tasks — not their ego. “Task orientation,” she explained, “is when we know our role and we complete it, no matter how we feel. Ego orientation is when we think, ‘How does this make me look?' The more we focus on the task, the more we grow.”Coach Roden's approach reminds every athlete that greatness isn't about doing more — it's about doing what matters most, free from distraction. As she said, “Perfection isn't an option, but progress is.”So, how can you “Win the Hour”? Identify your distractions. Make a plan for when you'll train, study, and rest. Focus on your tasks, not your ego. And above all — keep your eyes up to the work.####Especially for Athletes:• Website: https://e4a.org• Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/EspeciallyForAthletes/• X: https://x.com/E4Afamily• Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/especiallyforathletes/• YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCmbWc7diAvstLMfjBL-bMMQJoin the conversation using #TheSportlightPodcast####Credits:Hosted by Dustin Smith & Shad MartinProduced by Shad Martin and IMAGINATE STUDIO

Vandalism at draft board offices as U.S. involvement in Vietnam was escalating was deeply divisive. The draft board raids were part of an antiwar movement, largely grounded in Catholic religious convictions, that spanned almost four years. Part one covers the basic context of the Vietnam War and why the U.S. was involved in the first place, and the earliest raids on draft boards. Research: "Statement: the Boston Eight" Newsletter. In late 1931, several Native trappers in Aklavik, Northwest Territories, reported to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) that a newly arrived white man, Albert Johnson, had been tampering with their traps. The RCMP dispatched two officers to Johnson's remote cabin, but he refused to speak with them, so they left to get a warrant to search his home. When the officers returned and tried to gain entry, Johnson fired a shotgun blast through the cabin door, wounding one of the RCMP officers. The incident quickly escalated when a posse of RCMP officers returned and tossed dynamite into the cabin, initiating a firefight in which one officer was killed, and a manhunt that would last more than month and unfold across more than 150 miles of some of the roughest terrain in the world. In the end, Albert Johnson would not be taken alive. And while his death may have ended the wild pursuit across the Yukon territory, it was just the beginning of another mystery that would endure into the twenty-first century.Thank you to the Incredible Dave White of Bring Me the Axe Podcast for research and Writing support!ReferencesCanadian Press. 1932.
