Two significant advances in science and technology are helping us examine our own planet, as well as galaxies near and far. The first is the James Webb Space Telescope—an instrument that's already transmitting game-changing data from a million miles away. The second is NASA's SWOT mission, named for its exploration of Earth's surface water and ocean topography. Using remote sensing technology, it aims to be the first-ever global survey of its kind. Bloomberg space reporter Loren Grush joins this episode to share why these endeavors are important not just for science but also to help us make decisions about our everyday lives. Plus, we meet some of the people behind these projects—and those whose work will be shaped by the wealth of information beaming back to Earth. Spectral Difference method with it a posteriori limiting: Application to the Euler equations in one and two space dimensions by David Velasco-Romero et al. on Wednesday 14 September We present a new numerical scheme which combines the Spectral Difference (SD) method up to arbitrary high order with emph{a-posteriori} limiting using the classical MUSCL-Hancock scheme as fallback scheme. It delivers very accurate solutions in smooth regions of the flow, while capturing sharp discontinuities without spurious oscillations. We exploit the strict equivalence between the SD scheme and a Finite-Volume (FV) scheme based on the SD control volumes to enable a straightforward limiting strategy. At the end of each stage of our high-order time-integration ADER scheme, we check if the high-order solution is admissible under a number of numerical and physical criteria. If not, we replace the high-order fluxes of the troubled cells by fluxes from our robust second-order MUSCL fallback scheme. We apply our method to a suite of test problems for the 1D and 2D Euler equations. We demonstrate that this combination of SD and ADER provides a virtually arbitrary high order of accuracy, while at the same time preserving good sub-element shock capturing capabilities. arXiv: http://arxiv.org/abs/http://arxiv.org/abs/2209.06597v1

Of all the different areas that robotics is being applied to, space robotics might be the one that most captures people's imaginations and inspires us to make what seems impossible, possible. From robots in orbit to planetary rovers and wearable tech, in this episode we'll explore the latest developments in space robotics and technology. In this episode, I'm joined by Xander Hall (Airbus Defence and Space), Dr Arthur Bouton (Surrey Space Centre, University of Surrey) and Steph Pau (Hamlyn Centre, Imperial College London) to talk about the challenges and opportunities for robots in space - present and future. Xander Hall is a Mission Systems Engineer at Airbus in Stevenage and specialises in robotics, in-orbit servicing and UK national missions. His time at Airbus has seen him work on projects to build >100m reflectors in orbit, perform Mars rover field trials in the Atacama desert in Chile, and develop the RemoveDEBRIS space harpoon (amongst many others). He is passionate about developing the next generation of spacecraft/services and is an advocate for keeping the space environment sustainable. Dr Arthur Bouton did his PhD in Paris on the topic of compliant wheel-legged locomotion systems. Two years ago, he joined the Future of AI and Robotics in Space (FAIR-SPACE) project at the University of Surrey to work on planetary rover mobility. Robotics is for him the best way to engage with all the engineering topics he is passionate about, from the mechanical design to machine learning and control. Stephanie Pau is a research associate at the Hamlyn Centre at Imperial College London, where she works with medical robotics researchers to create the links with space and industry. She has masters degrees in Electronics and Electronics Engineering from Imperial College and in Healthcare and Design from the Royal College of Art. She worked for 6 years in the space industry as a solutions architect and is now writing a book chapter on the Future of Human Robot Interaction in Space. She recently ran a webinar series, “From PPE to Spacesuits”.

NASA has approved two projects that will make mining resources from asteroids and the moon possible. The first project, Skylight, was proposed by Carnegie Mellon / kɑrˈneɪ gi ˈmɛl ən / University. The project aims to survey moon craters and find out whether they are good for mining. The second project, called Mini Bee prototype, was proposed by TransAstra Corporation, a company specializing in space technology. Its objective is to develop technology that will be used in mining resources such as water and minerals from asteroids. Skylight is a small lunar rover that can take high-resolution images of craters and create digital 3D models for them. Multiple rovers will be deployed to gather data on the moon. The information gathered will help scientists on Earth decide if the craters are safe for exploration. The rovers may also be used to search the moon for possible water sources. On the other hand, the Mini Bee prototype will be used to break down the surface of asteroids. The robots will use optical mining technology, which involves focusing sunlight on the asteroids to disintegrate them. The debris created would be collected into an inflatable bag and converted into fuel. With the plan to return to the moon by 2024, NASA is optimistic that Skylight and Mini Bee can lessen the water, fuel, and other resources that astronauts need to bring on their trips to the moon. NASA also hopes that the projects can help them establish the Lunar Orbital Platform – Gateway, a space station orbiting the moon, which is going to be a stepping stone for future missions to Mars.
This is the thirteenth episode in a new series of the Two Tribes podcast supported by Tank Stream Labs (TSL). Pete meets with Tashi Dorjee from Two Space. Two Space identifies un- or under-utilised spaces like restaurants and bars for start up teams to use as co-working space and also plays a role in connecting and sharing across this community. It is now open in locations in Sydney and Melbourne and prides itself on being affordable and unique. We hear about the founding story of Two Space and in particular the unique mix of physical and technical requirements for a business like Two Space. Tashi is the Chief Space Officer and is a serial entrepreneur who previously built and led Carbon Conservation a sustainability tech business. From Tashi we learn about his 'hustle in' approach to entrepreneurship and how he balances his time on the business. Excited to catch-up with Two Space co-founder and social entrepreneur, Tashi Dorjee! Indirectly, my connection with Tashi is actually the reason Hot & Delicious: Rocks The Planet! is now a weekly show on Bondi Beach Radio. Tashi and I met at the Two Space co-working space for start-ups and entrepreneurs at the Kings Cross Hotel a few weeks back and I just had to get him on the show to tell his story. Partnering with Optus and Amazon, TwoSpace connects underutilised spaces with a community of entrepreneurs, creating unique spaces that help businesses start, connect and grow. We also chat about his work with Carbon Conservation, a business dedicated to conserving the rainforests of Indonesia and current protects 1 million hectares of rainforest and the introduction of Himalayan Chai into the Australian market back in the day by his grandmother, which went on to be adopted by Gloria Jeans and more. Vast-ranging and fascinating chats and I just love meeting new people whom I feel like I’ve known for years. Two Earth approaching asteroids were discovered on the same night.
Carl and Richard talk about two space accidents that happened in the same week - the explosion of Orbital Science's Antares Rocket on October 28 and the breakup of Virgin Galactic's SpaceShipTwo on October 31. Richard begins with the Orbital Science's mission to supply the International Space Station. Part of NASA's Commercial Resupply Services, the ORB-3 mission included the Cygnus spacecraft carrying supplies to the ISS as well as a number of smaller payloads, including the Arkyd-3. The Antares rocket exploded a few seconds after launch. The discussion digs into the origins of the rocket design and Orbital's subsequent actions to deal with the loss of the rocket - they're still responsible to get those supplies to the station! The second part of the show is even more serious, since it involves a fatality - the breakup of SpaceShipTwo during a test flight, resulting in the death of co-pilot Michael Alsbury. This week, after 2 shows of epic length, we return to a normal length episode.WDI recently added "starry-o-phonic" sound to Space Mountain at The Magic Kingdom at Walt Disney World, which, as far as I can gather, is a series of over 60 speakers throughout the ride to provide a new soundtrack without the expense of adding audio equipment in the ride vehicles. So, because of this, I asked John Corigliano (mousetimes podcast) to record the new ride experience for me.
