This episode features a conversation that explores the intersectionality of race, careers in engineering and joy. These are big topics on their own and become highly amplified and sometimes harmful, when one's self-identities and protected characteristics intertwine. Today, we're going to approach them with care and mindful intention as these are themes that we don't often get to share in this way. My name is Beatrice Udeh and I am the guest host for this Black History Month episode of Impulse to Innovation. Beatrice Udeh is Head of Diversity at the Arts Marketing Association (AMA). She is an award-winning creative specialist, a theatre producer, broadcaster & poet, and has held positions at both the BBC and Arts Council England. She has a degree in mechanical engineering and was a mechanical design engineer for Rolls Royce. So, why am I hosting and not Dr Helen Meese? Well, Helen approached me as she was keen for the IMechE to celebrate Black History Month, but wanted to make sure that somebody with lived-experience and a professional EDI background was at the helm to hold the space for the panel. I'm no stranger to the IMechE or to the microphone. I'm a former broadcast journalist and radio producer. I'm a former Mechanical Design Engineer and was an IMechE member nigh on 25 years ago, chairing the Young Members Panel for Derby and Nottingham in the East Midlands. I am joined on the episode by some amazing people who are leaders in their technical and engineering fields including start-ups, geeks, policymakers and just plain, smart engineers. I'm excited to get to the pulse of what makes them rock and find out how they roll during BHM and beyond. I wanted to share a few things as provocations for this discussion, here are some interesting stats by the Association of Black and Minority Ethnic Engineers (AFBE-UK): “Currently, around 30% of the U.K.'s engineering university graduates are from black and minority ethnic backgrounds. However, these underrepresented groups account for only 9% of professional engineers. This is largely due to the barriers and challenges these groups face in recruitment, retention, and advancing professional development.” With my Diversity-lead hat on, three things stick out for me. One, there is the language - black and minority ethnic. Two, the stats (30% of University graduates vs 9% entering the sector) and three the business case for a thriving workforce: recruitment, retention and career advancement. According to Engineering UK, Global Majority individuals in the UK engineering sector face several specific challenges. Research has been done to quantify this, with specific examples of inclusion of people and inclusivity written into processes and policies. Not being seen aka representation Different types of bias such as the halo effect, or conformity bias and even attribution bias. All of these biases impact our behaviours and lead to discrimination even before reaching the workplace, let alone in the recruitment, onboarding and retention processes. The National Engineering Policy Centre (NEPC), released a report this summer highlighting the importance of increasing representation in engineering and emphasising the need for a diverse and skilled workforce. And with a reported 700,000 people contributing to the engineering economy and 'Statista Data' showing that there are 540,000 engineers working in the UK, what does this mean when we intersect this with Black-British history and Global Majority engineering futures? This months guests are: Swati Swati is a dedicated, award-winning Biomedical Engineer. Having moved from India where she worked at the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, she studied for her engineering degree before starting a new career as a Clinical Technologist at Royal London Hospital, Barts Health NHS Trust. With a passion for STEM education and Healthcare Swati has set up her own company and now provides a variety of leadership, technical and regulatory affairs courses for students at universities and healthcare related solutions to hospitals and healthcare industries. Dr Nike Folayan MBE is a chartered engineer and Fellow of the IET. She holds a PhD in Electronics Engineering with referenced international research publications and citations. She sits on a number of advisory boards for various governmental and non-governmental organisations including the Royal Academy of Engineering, Transport for London and the University of Kent Industrial Panel. Nike is recognised as one of the top 100 most influential women in engineering and recieved her MBE for services to diversity in engineering in 2020. Nike is co-founder and chairperson of AFBE-UK, a UK-wide organisation that promotes higher achievement in Engineering particularly for underrepresented groups in engineering. She is presently Technical Director at WSP UK. Shefali Sharma is an Aeronautics & Space Engineer and Co-Founder & Director of Oxford Dynamics. Seconded to India on behalf of the UK space industry & the Dept. for International Trade in her early career, Shefali has gone on to become a leading Entrepreneur in the space sector creating OxLABS and Oxford Dynamics in less than five years. With multiple honours to her name, she is now focusing on cutting-edge Artificial Intelligence research for the space industry. Dr Bridget Ogwezi is an award winning doctoral research engineer and civil engineering graduate. She is Senior Strategic Project Manager for Ansys UK. Bridget is passionate about the process of discovery in particular, how to harness human innovation, technology and the materials we build with to make buildings healthier and less damaging to the planet. Maira Bana is a chartered mechanical engineer with expertise in analysing and resolving cooling and airflow challenges in the data centre industry, through thermal simulation. She manages the CFD Team at RED Engineering Design. Maira is an active IMechE volunteer and Co-Chairs the Construction & Building Services Division, she is also a past Trustee of the Institution. Presently she is a Trustee of SheCanEngineer. It's a common misconception that precon is solely a numbers-and-computers industry. How do we get the word out that in reality, it's far more complex and full of opportunities? Live from Advancing Preconstruction 2024, Ryan Diekemper of Poettker Construction joins the podcast to spark a conversation about the many different options you have in a precon career, how to tackle communication when the chain of command seems to be a mile long, and why refusing to evolve with the times means “you'll always be a dinosaur.” Ryan Diekemper is Vice President of Preconstruction at Poettker Construction Company. He has additional experience in the Electrical field, in which he worked for over 15 years. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical and Electronics Engineering from Missouri University and Science and Technology. TODD TAKES Adoption of AI in Preconstruction: Like in many other sectors, AI is increasingly being integrated into preconstruction. This technology is revolutionizing how we plan and execute projects, offering smarter ways to approach building design and management. Importance of Collaboration: Effective collaboration and continuous communication among all stakeholders are essential in preconstruction. Ensuring everyone is on the same page helps in managing the complexities of construction projects more efficiently. Efficiency and Planning in Preconstruction: Preconstruction is crucial for establishing efficiency and preparing for unforeseen challenges. It involves detailed planning and a deep understanding of where and how to streamline processes to ensure project success. Thanks for listening! About Flavio Rump: Flavio Rump is one of the co-founders of DeinDeal, the famous Swiss eCommerce scaleup acquired by DeinDeal in 2011. He's also a startup investor, board member and growth expert. He holds a BSc in Electrical and Electronics Engineering from ETH and has co-founded companies like Pigeon Apps Inc, Blue Chocolate Inc, and Bio2040.com, and the Student Biolab Zurich. He credits DeinDeal's success and quick growth to their early realization that sales do not equal profits, and to the fact that their team possessed a large number of extremely competent “specialists”. Here is a summary of some of the sales and marketing tips that he shared with our host Silvan: The difference between sales and marketing is that marketing is a long-term endeavor to build trust and credibility, whereas sales is a shorter-term process where you understand customer needs and fit your product to them. The sales channels that worked best for DeinDeal were Google Search, Facebook and Hyperlocalized Advertising. For this last one they created individual landing pages for certain queries (e.g., hairdressers in Zurich, restaurants in Zurich), in order to reduce the number of clicks a customer has to go through to get from query to conversion. Their conversion rates increased 50%. A great way to start getting closer to customers and better understanding their needs is to create a live chat on your homepage. Customer development should start as soon as research and product development start. Talking to customers while building your product helps you know which product to build in the first place, as well as which markets to go into. Don't be afraid to get candid with prospects during sales calls. Phrases like “Help me out here” are effective in getting people to open up and to explain how your product falls short. Don't be afraid to ask your prospect to close the deal if your sales call is going really well. And if your sales call went well but you haven't heard from your prospect since, don't assume this means disinterest — often people are just quite busy. Follow up continuously unless they clearly state that they no longer intend to buy your product. Don't forget to give us a follow on Twitter, Instagram, Facebook and Linkedin, so you can always stay up to date with our latest initiatives. EPISODE #1047 CLIMATE CHANGE HOAX EXPOSED Richard welcomes the producer of a documentary film, Climate: The Movie (The Cold Truth), which exposes the climate alarm as an invented scare without any basis in science. It shows that mainstream studies and official data do not support the claim that we are witnessing an increase in extreme weather events – hurricanes, droughts, heatwaves, wildfires and all the rest. It emphatically counters the claim that current temperatures and levels of atmospheric CO2 are unusually and worryingly high. On the contrary, compared to the last half billion years of earth's history, both current temperatures and CO2 levels are extremely and unusually low. We are currently in an ice age. It also shows that there is no evidence that changing levels of CO2 (it has changed many times) has ever ‘driven' climate change in the past. Each year, the U.S. needs roughly 400,000 new engineers. Projections estimate that nearly one-third of these roles will remain unfilled each year through at least 2030. What's worse? There's $450 billion of lost economic output at risk. . To address this dire need, Boston Consulting Group (BCG) and SAE International are working together to find new and creative ways to close the gap. The 40 by 30 initiative aims to boost the number of women in engineering roles to 40% by 2030, and along the way, open up pathways for all individuals who are interested in training, upskilling, and shifting across engineering disciplines. . To learn more, we sat down with SAE Board Member and Trustee, Joan Wills, Executive Director, Software & Electronics Engineering, Cummins Inc., and Sibley Nebergall (Lovett), Partner, BCG, to understand the challenges, the opportunities, and how a public-private partnership can strengthen the engineering talent pipeline. It's an eye-opening conversation you won't want to miss! . To be a part of the 40 by 30 initiative, please reach out to Joan or Sibley via LinkedIn. GUEST OVERVIEW: Tom has an MS degree in Electrical and Electronics Engineering. He was involved in tech and software for many years. In 2005, as an avid bird-watcher, he became heavily involved in debunking a high-profile, but bogus “Ivory-billed Woodpecker” rediscovery that opened his eyes to the problems with blindly trusting “peer-reviewed science”. Then a meteorologist pointed out lots of parallels between that woodpecker debate and the climate change debate, and Tom has been debunking climate change claims almost daily since then.

Engineering Success Podcast - The Engineering Career Podcast
My guest on today's podcast is an accomplished engineer, teacher, and advocate for traditionally underrepresented groups in STEM. Melissa Villegas Drake is a graduate of New Mexico State University, where she obtained her Bachelor of Science in Electrical and Electronics Engineering. She has held multiple roles as an engineer, including working on the Space Shuttle Program, and had a second career as an educator teaching engineering to high school students aspiring to a career in engineering. One thing that has been consistent for Melissa is her advocacy for minority representation in engineering. While in school, she became involved with the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers, and after starting her career, she continued her involvement and eventually became the National President of that organization. Melissa's newest adventure is her efforts to get more girls and women into tech careers. She and another colleague revived the Girls in Tech chapter in Phoenix, as her main goal is to inspire individuals to begin a career in tech. Being a coach to a FIRST robotics Girl Scout team, she is a formal volunteer for Girl Scouts. She is an ambassador of the Google Group Women Techmakers and was recently recognized as one of Phoenix Magazine's Great 48 Phoenicians. Melissa is such a wonderful ambassador for the engineering community, and I'm so grateful that she has offered her time to share her journey here on the podcast Don't miss a blog post or a podcast episode, subscribe to my newsletter on www.ENGRingSuccess.com Support the on podcast on Spotify or on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/ENGRingSuccess Top tier supporters - shout out each episode of the month for $10 monthly donation. Timestamps: 6:30 - Combining STEM and business 8:50 - The fundraising environment 16:19 - Fundraising and keeping the boat afloat 19:27 - What makes a great pitch deck 35:13 - Should investors sit on a company's board? About Sophia Lamparter, Daniel Gutenberg & Christina Vallgren: Sophie Lamparter is the co-founder of DART Labs, an international fund investing in early stage European climate and health tech startups to accelerate them on the US market. She holds a degree in Communication and Media Studies from ZHAW. Daniel Gutenberg is a business angel and entrepreneur, having founded Gutenberg Communication Systems AG at 25 and sold it 5 years later, in 2000. He holds a diploma in Electrical and Electronics Engineering from Ecole Technique Supérieure. Christina Vallgren is the co-founder, CEO and President of Terapet SA, a medtech startup based in Geneva. She holds a PhD in Applied Physics. Coming in with the American perspective, Sophie Lamparter shared that the biggest difference between the Swiss and Silicon Valley ecosystems is culture: in California, every conversation starts with a yes, and you then figure out whether it stays a yes or turns into a no; in Switzerland, conversations start with a no, and then maybe, after the arduous process of building trust, this no can turn into a yes. For startups to thrive, a yes-culture is obviously more beneficial. Other topics discussed during this episode include the preparation founder teams must make before they raise funds, how to raise money in uncertain times, what the ideal runway is to start fundraising, and what makes a great pitch deck. Listen to the episode to find out what our guests have to say on these topics and check out Swisspreneur's free fundraising masterclass (which includes Sophie!) to learn more. Memorable Quotes: "Next year, we're going to be looking back at 2023 and saying ‘Boy, 2023 was easy!'" (Daniel Gutenberg) "As a CEO, you have to build momentum around your company all the time." Any long-time listeners of the show know that I'm passionate about accessibility and disability technology. Technologies that support the idea that we can have an equitable world, and that creating a more accessible world makes things better not just for the group specifically considered in that technology, but for all of us, is a key idea to me. That's why I wanted to sit down with Suman Kanuganti, the former Co-founder and CEO of Aira Tech, a high-tech startup whose work helped pioneer a way to bridge the information gap for those who are blind or low vision. At Aira, Kanuganti transformed cities, airports, and universities across the country by helping to make those spaces accessible for people who are blind or low-vision. After founding AIRA, Suman went on to start another company, PersonalAI, which is extending the principles of accessibility and mobility to the context of memory. In founding PersonalAI, Suman sought to create an AI to support memory, and to return data ownership back to the individual at this critical moment, when the assumptions that used to rule the web, where our personal data was the property of the companies whose products we use to move throughout digital space in our daily lives—Facebook, Google, WhatsApp—are in flux. In this conversation, we talk about the concept of memory and the transformation of this concept in the context of digital technologies; we talk about the challenges of, and possibilities, for creating accessibility technologies, and Suman shares his vision of returning data ownership to the people. Suman Kanuganti is the CEO of PersonalAI. He holds an MBA in Entrepreneurship / Entrepreneurial Studies from the UC San Diego Rady School of Management, a Master's in Computer Engineering from the University of Missouri-Columbia, and a Bachelor's in Electrical and Electronics Engineering from Kakatiya University, India.
