Is modern-day racism just the lingering shadow of our bright colonial past - or - is it the result of systematic steps taken to weave oppression into the fabric of American culture; ultimately playing into a darker hand? We talk about that and much more, including: Why color is important, the invention of racism, does racism still exists and where we might find it. We also discuss the corruption of the American system as a whole, how they are changing our minds and what their goal ultimately is. Things might not be as black and white as you thought! This week we double down on action with one ultra violent film and a buddy cop comedy. First up, Hardcore Henry from 2016 which is shot entirely in first person, is inspired by video games and heavy on action. The second movie is also from 2016 and is about a pair of corrupt cops with a comedic twist. Kino club is a few people that get together, watch a film, and then discuss what we thought. It is a "warts and all" recording and there will be spoilers, so be warned. This meeting we review the 2016 dark action comedy, War on Everyone. It’s the story of two corrupt cops who set out to blackmail and frame every criminal unfortunate enough to cross their path. Events, however, are complicated by the arrival of someone who appears to be even more dangerous than they are. I stumbled across this film on Netflix and wanted to share it with the rest of Kino Club. Have you seen this yet? What did you think? We'd love to hear your thoughts. Just respond to the Facebook post.
It's a bloody free-for-all as Jonah watches Pooka Lives! with actor Malcolm Barrett, actor/Executive Producer Felicia Day, and director Alejandro Brugués! They talk about making every shot count on a low-budget film, why actors should never eat in a scene, having trouble hitting your marks, being from Brooklyn, and tearing down walls (literal and metaphorical.)LinksFind out where you can watch Pooka Lives!Watch Going Live With Malcolm With Malcolm, Malcolm’s streaming talk showFollow Malcolm on Twitter and InstagramSubscribe to Felicia's Twitch channelFollow Felicia on Twitter and InstagramListen to our Juan of The Dead episode with AlejandroFollow Alejandro on Twitter and InstagramThank you to Allie Goertz for our theme song and Perry Shall for our artwork.
Esteemed British black-comedy director John Michael McDonagh may not have hit the height of something like, The Guard here but it's still well worth fans of very on the nose humor. Stars Michael Pena and Alexander Skarsgard both shine and are usually hilarious.

Fascism. It’s back and it’s….Ironic? From Hungary to Brazil to the United States of America, facism—yes, fascism—is back in a big way. When our grandfathers beat back the Nazis in World War II, we assumed we’d beaten the ideology into dust. The problem is that fascism isn’t so much a coherent set of beliefs as it is a mutation, perversion, and reaction to the politics of the moment. The truth is, fascism is as American as apple pie and it’s been lingering in the wings for years. Here with us today to talk about the neo-fascist movement and its rise to current prominence is Robert Evans. Evans works with Bellingcat and is the host of the Behind the Bastards Podcast and has just published a free audiobook, The War On Everyone, that charts the rise of America’s fascists. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
The podcast will be returning in September, but I wanted to share the new audiobook “The War on Everyone” by former guest, journalist Robert Evans. This is the second half, Chapters 1-3 are in the previous episode. Robert is the host of one of my favorite podcasts, “Behind The Bastards”, where he profiles some of the worst people in history. The work he has done to catalog the history of White Supremacy in America provides so much essential context for our current political climate. So with his permission, I am republishing the entire book in two parts this week. You can also find the book at http://thewaroneveryone.com Chapter 4: How to Build an Army Louis Beam was once a normal American soldier. But in the wake of the Vietnam War, he would painstakingly craft a vicious fascist insurgency. When Beam’s ground-level activism met Pierce’s propaganda, the result was the birth of a terrorist movement that still stalks us to this day. Chapter 5: The Hidden Civil War Inspired by Beam and Pierce, a young man named Bob Mathews attempted to spark a Second American Civil War. Whether he succeeded or failed is still up in the air. Chapter 6: The Perfect Soldier In his life and death, Timothy McVeigh represented the best-case scenario for the kind of warriors Louis Beam wanted to inculcate through his “leaderless resistance” strategy. His story is a tale of triumph for American fascism. Chapter 7: The Digital Reich This is where we are now: an era where a distributed network of individual extremists are able to radicalize each other and inspire acts of violence worldwide. This is not the result of an unhappy accident, or an unforeseen consequence of the digital era. It’s the result of decades of careful planning.

In this chapter, you’ll learn about “Ur-Fascism”, and how humor and irony have historically been used to enable its rise. Chapter 2: An American Fascist Faith The Tree of Life Synagogue Shooting, the Poway Synagogue shooting, the Olympic park bombing and dozens of other terrorist attacks all have one thing in common- Christian Identity. In this chapter, we delve into a cultic belief system at the heart of American fascism. Chapter 3: The Apostle of Fascism William Luther Pierce is the most important Nazi you’ve never heard of, and his work has helped inspire a generation of terrorists- right up to the present day.

Dalton and Dustin are back with War on Everyone which is oddly appropriate for the week of the Fourth of July. According to Wikipedia: War on Everyone is a 2016 British black comedy buddy cop film written and directed by John Michael McDonagh. The film stars Alexander Skarsgård, Michael Peña, and Theo James. Set and filmed in Albuquerque, New Mexico, it was screened in the Panorama section of the 66th Berlin International Film Festival. We heat up some fun conversation as we talk about discourses of violence, America viewed from the outside, police brutality, nuance in religion and gender/sexuality and a movie we overall felt was kind of a mess. Our game was good times because we got to talk about our favorite cinematic henchmen. GET IN TOUCH If you haven’t yet, you can connect with us through our various means of social media.
It's been a while since we've reviewed a movie released recently... until now! We bring you an excellent episode on War On Everyone! The film, which stars Michael Pena and Alexander Skarsgard, features to badass dirty cops who do more damage to the law than abide by it. Since this film is written and directed by the brother of writer/director of two of our favorites (In Bruges and Seven Psychopaths), it definitely piqued our interest! Check out this episode to find out what we thought of War On Everyone.

On this episode we partner up with the world's biggest Michael Pena fan, Jairo from the True Bromance Film Podcast, for an episode on this great actor's films as one half of a law enforcement duo. In new release WAR ON EVERYONE, Pena rampages through New Mexico with Alexander Skarsgard as two cops who spend their days sharing a philosophy of hating any and everyone. This divisive film from John Michael McDonagh has us taking a look back at another film seeking to offend in OBSERVE AND REPORT. In Jody Hill's take on TAXI DRIVER, Pena and Seth Rogen are mall cops on the pursuit of a thief and a perverted flasher. Something we wish we could say that Jake Gyllenhaal does as Pena's final partner on this podcast in David Ayer's END OF WATCH. Which of these actors earns the right to ride along with the great Michael Pena? Find out on this episode of War Machine vs. War Horse. Edith's guest this week is fast establishing a reputation as a filmmaker of wit, originality and imaginative flair. In his short career as a writer / director, John Michael McDonagh has brought us 3 features, all of which have been characterised by taut narrative, black comedy and whip-crack dialogue. First up was The Guard, starring Brendan Gleeson and Don Cheadle, which is officially the most financially successful Irish independent movie of all time. Then came Calvary, a darkly humorous drama about a priest tormented by his community. Now he’s crossed the Atlantic with War On Everyone, another twisted comedy in which Alexander Skarsgård and Michael Peña play a pair of tearaway New Mexico cops. John’s heartfelt passion for music is reflected in the wide variety of artists he’s used in his work. During the course of our conversation, you’ll hear tunes from The Clash, The Fun Loving Criminals, REM, M.O.P and John Denver, among many, many others. We’ll also discuss his collaborations on score with Calexico, Patrick Cassidy and Lorne Balfe.

On this latest episode of Speakin' Geek Graham was lucky enough to be invited to the red carpet of John Michael McDonaghs new film- War On Everyone. Starring Alexander Skarsgård, Michael Pena, and Tessa Thompson this film feels like the spiritual successor to The Guard. It involves two corrupt cops doing corrupt things. Graham got to interview David Wilmot, he bumped into Orla Brady who was in Doctor Who, and he got to interview both Michael Pena and Alexander Skarsgård. It was an absolute blast and they were both gents. Be sure to share and subscribe to future episodes if you enjoyed this one. Massive shout out to Niall Murphy for giving Graham the opportunity to once again make himself feel like a real journalist.
